By Thornton Crowe Back in the 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in a lawsuit where it was deemed unconstitutional to have segregated school systems that separated white and black students. In an effort to end this racial segregation policy in the spirit of Civil Rights, the courts then (twenty years later) asked for the process of integration within the student bodies to happen 'with deliberate speed.' Hence, the outcome, disastrous as it was, resulted in busing due to the fact that many communities had racially divided enclaves within them; therefore, the segregation was de facto - meaning a matter of circumstance and locale. Busing caused many problems in the late Sixties/early Seventies; especially in cities like Boston, where the neighborhoods were divided not by race as much as ethnicity. Irish notoriously lived in South Boston while the Italians were largely in the Northern townships like Malden. During the busing era, children were send miles away from home even though there was a school right down the street, in order to make a concerted effort to desegregate the school system.
Unlike most urban legend, while President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, it wasn't until President Richard Nixon (through the Supreme Court) when it was actually executed by the government. In his attempt to quill the battle cry of the movement era, he deferred the actual implementation within areas reluctant to adopt desegregation to the Supreme Court for enforcement. Granted, before Brown v. Board of Education, the school systems were vastly different. For example, the white schools got more money and better resources from the Board of Eds in their areas than the black schools. There was a huge imbalance between the two and the quality of education was evident within the two separate systems. More whites went on to achieve higher education while blacks were prone either drop out of high school or not pursue education beyond the twelfth grade level. Hence, because blacks were less likely to pursue a collegiate path, their young men were drafted into the Vietnam War where many black communities lost a lot of them overseas. What does that mean today?
This last week, a parent sent Salisbury News a disturbing video a group of black kids attacking someone at Parkside High School. One can't see from the video if the victim was white or female; however, the parent stated in their explanation that it was a white girl who was alone at the time of the attack. From other viewer comments made on the post, apparently this wasn't the only 'attack' of this nature during the same school day. Also disturbing was the victim's prior discussions with authority figures at PHS were told by her that she was being threatened. Knowing this attack was imminent, the administration seemed to let the situation occur without any interference before, during or after. Furthermore, the parent states their child was afraid to take the video to the office, in fear of being suspended for having the video in the first place. Today, we can no longer blame busing for racial violence in schools. However, the anger seems to be ever-present within the student body as if we're back in 1974. Namely the black students are now terrorizing white students over some illusionary grievance. And once again, after all the upheaval over Salisbury University's enabling of reverse discrimination, we are now faced with yet, another act (or potentially more) of same with an schools enabling by inaction.
Have we come full circle on this grand liberal agenda to the point where it's time to reinstate racial segregation in our school systems? Many will no doubt retort that this is a preposterous idea as some have bitter memories of the painful movement from segregated to desegregated but do our kids deserve to be in this type of turmoil as they try to get an education in today's public school system? Sure, there's been bullies all throughout history - especially in high school. Every school has at least one bad apple or two whom finds joy in slamming the skinny kids into lockers and calling those with weight problems, painful names but when a gang of kids beat another person to the point of head contusions, facial injuries and broken arms or worse, like in Delaware, being beaten to death - when is it enough for people to start segregating from each other?
Most people today don't realize President Abraham Lincoln had an ultimate agenda for freeing the slaves. He wanted to send them back to Africa and South America. In fact, he did send a few groups to these locations but most died due to their inability to withstand the environment. He expressed many times, he didn't believe black and white people could coexist together in any kind of racial harmony. This was over 150 years ago when he penned this statement in his State of the Union address to Congress, asking to deport the black population out of America. It seems from the incidents over the last couple of weeks at both Parkside and Salisbury University, perhaps he's right. Maybe this social experiment hasn't worked out so hot after all. More and more white people have relayed to me over the last eight years, they find themselves more cautious and aware of the black people in their presence. It's like they're poised for just about anything - they look at them with suspicion and more scrutiny than even ten years ago. Why? Largely because of all the violent rioting with hate groups like BLM but also it's the way they are treated by black people in stores, restaurants, on the roadways, in the workplace and at local schools by blacks.
For example, I had an incident happen just yesterday where I was trying to help a young black man get a clerk's attention. When I asked him if he was having trouble, he couldn't have been more rude. I got this treatment merely because I was trying to HELP him. Incidents like this cause me grave concern over our community's elderly and homeless population who provide easy and defenseless targets for this young black anger. It's sad that we all can't seem to get along with a shared goal of peace and prosperity, but let's be honest with ourselves, the racial divide in our community is more acute now than the Sixties; however, the hostility of the young black population far exceeds, in spite of the many benefits their forefathers fought for them to enjoy in the Civil Rights Movement era. It's abundantly clear, area schools (including the universities) aren't going to step up to the plate and help with this issue. If anything, they enable its continuance due to their inaction and lack of intolerance. All I know is this, while today everyone enjoys Mother's Day, one area mother is having to nurse her physically broken child due to a vicious attack in a seemingly 'safe space' in school because of the color of her skin. So, I ask of you, was Lincoln right after all? Is it time to, once again, segregate due to irreconcilable differences? Unfortunately, it's no longer a question of racism as it's now become a question of prudence and perhaps physical safety. How say you?

SU: Inaction Equals Race Baiting Tolerance Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT By Thornton Crowe Over the last week here on Salisbury News, there has been a debate fuming over the black students who drew a race baiting image on a whiteboard in one of Blackwell Library's study rooms. Many comments have conflicted over Salisbury University's mishandling of this criminal incident. (And yes, any time one does something to intentionally incite violence, it is a crime.) Since January, we have seen in the national news, many incidents where black people have purposefully tried to incite racial division and violence; victimizing white people. This has even occurred on college campuses by black students and alumni. The only difference is, those perpetrators face criminal charges while the SU students go unscathed for the time being. Two examples are: Kayla-Simone McKelvey, a 24 year old alumni and self-proclaimed black activist for Black Lives Matters from Keane University has been charged for sending out death threat tweets to black students, posing as white students. Another at Albany University, where three students face charges for generating Fake Hate after claiming a racial attack on a bus, which drew national attention from people like Hillary Clinton whom rushed to judgment only to find the story was completely false. In the latter article on the Gateway Pundit, it states the falsely accused: "...student dropped out, likely because UAlbany isn't a safe environment while these racist and potentially violent students are allowed to terrorize the campus with the support of their biased university president."In the racial tension environment we now live in, thanks much to DC politicizing and exploiting some of America's dark history, can we really afford to let black millennials get a way with hate crimes just because they're not white? Does this protect the communities college campuses operate in, if we let people try to incite a dangerous repeat of the Sixties? If you remember 1968, then you have a full understanding of the violence and rioting that comes along with escalated tensions. By refusing to press charges, SU's president, Dr. Janet Dudley-Eschbach is not only enabling and fostering racial tension and race baiting, she is endangering the entire community. As seen by the two examples above, should charges be filed (which they should by all accounts,) it would not be without precedence as more universities and community leaders are holding black students accountable for this malfeasance every day. Yet, SU and State Attorney, Matt Maciarello, have both placated and enabled these students to get away with a hate crime simply because they were black. What could this mean in the bigger picture? 1968 revisited? Many students from SU have stated they were not aware of the situation and even when sent an email after the SbyNews article, much about the incident was omitted; like the race of the perpetrators. Hence, this poses a problem because black students will wrongfully assume white students were responsible. Conversely, the white students who have learned through word of mouth that it was drawn by black students will be equally upset for being 'framed' in a hate crime. Additionally, the black students involved most likely boasted to their friends, "Look what we got away with and you can do it, too." Therefore, while some commenters on the earlier posts may think it's a small thing - a crude picture on a whiteboard - this can metamorphose into many actions when left unchecked. Retaliation violence historically follows up incidents like this where administrators omit or misinform student bodies and surrounding community. Many community leaders and prominent business people like the Perdue, Guerrieri and Fulton families, have donated millions to SU so students of all races can gain an education. Many of these donors come from the Radicals' so-called, White Privilege. They, too, should be equally outraged as their names adorn the buildings at a campus known for its race baiting tolerance. Perhaps it is time for them to stand up against SU's policy of propagating hate. Other actions for citizens is to complain to the Board of Regents with the University System of Maryland, an organization whom can hold SU's administration accountable to rectify the situation before it becomes a more major issue for every citizen to endure. Unfortunately, SU's attempt at damage control to prevent perspective students, parents and those in the Salisbury community from hearing about this incendiary situation has failed miserably as other news outlets have begun reporting the story. This will no doubt be far more damaging to the school's brand than any prosecutorial action. Does the Salisbury University Alumni want their alma mater to be blemished by this type of complacency? Why would quality professors want to work in an academic environment that promotes hate through silence? Is this how we want Salisbury to be viewed by the rest of the world? Enablers of racial discrimination and race baiting? I would hope my fellow citizens would understand the potential danger posed by non-action and find it unacceptable from any entity in our community - especially the university that proclaims diversity. How say you?
Wicomico County: Six High School Prom Attendees Face Discipline Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Six High School Prom Attendees Face Discipline According to Code of Conduct in Connection with Alcohol Use Last weekend's prom for James M. Bennett High School was a special time for most students and their parents, but it also provided a clear reminder of the consequences of not following safe and legal procedures on a night of celebration. Please remember to celebrate safely on prom night and every other occasion: Alcohol use and possession by minors is illegal and can have dangerous consequences for everyone. Incidents involving alcohol will be dealt with firmly, with the best interests of students, others in the school, families, and the community in mind. At the prom Saturday night, administrators and law enforcement personnel suspected alcohol use by seven attendees due to the attendees' behavior and an odor of alcohol. A breath-testing device was used, and the device confirmed that alcoholic beverages had been consumed. The seven people, including one college student and six James M. Bennett High students, were not allowed to remain at prom, and parents of the high school students were contacted to pick them up. The high school students and their parents were notified that students involved in alcohol use or possession will face discipline according to the school system's Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct prohibits alcohol use or possession by students as a violation of public health and safety, and mandates a minimum penalty of five days of suspension plus five hours of mandatory counseling and 45 days of suspension from extracurricular activities.

19 Year Old Sentenced to Life Plus 23 Years for America's Best Value Homicide Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT SALISBURY MAN GUILTY AND SENTENCED TO LIFE PLUS TWENTY THREE YEARS FOR 1st DEGREE MURDER AND GUN CHARGES. On March 3, 2016, after a three day trial, Jarrett Stokes, age 19, of Delmar, was convicted by a Wicomico County Jury of Murder 1st Degree, Conspiracy, Handgun Use in a Felony, and related offenses. An investigation conducted by the Salisbury Police Department revealed that just after midnight on Aug 2, 2015, three other codefendants, Larry Ennis, Kyshir Connally, and Marquel Pinder were at an under 21 party at America's Best Value Inn. At the party, Ennis, Connally, and Pinder got into a verbal altercation with another group and were asked to leave. Upon leaving the party, a phone call was made to Jarrett Stokes, and the group met at IHOP. The group, including Ennis, Connally, Pinder, and Stokes then headed back to America's Best Value Inn to confront the group from earlier. They parked across from the hotel and Ennis, Connally, and Stokes searched the crowd for the individual Ennis and Connally had been previously fighting. After surveying the crowd for approximately ten minutes, Stokes shot four rounds into the crowd of 75 to 100 individuals. One of those rounds struck and killed a 17 year old boy who was standing in the crowd. On May 5, 2016, Stokes was sentenced by a Circuit Court Judge to life in prison on Murder 1st Degree, plus an additional 20 years on Handgun Use in a Felony and 3 years on Reckless Endangerment. Wicomico County State's Attorney, Matthew A. Maciarello, commended the Salisbury City Police Department, Det. J. Miller and Det. Ryan Brittingham, for their work in the investigation and prosecution of this case. Mr. Maciarello also thanked Senior Assistant State's Attorney Kristen Schultz and Senior Assistant State's Attorney Karen Dean who prosecuted the case.
Donald Trump Has Done Something No Other Human Being Has Ever Been Able To Do Before Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT When I ran for Mayor a few years ago, the press wanted nothing to do with me. The local Republican Club refused to allow me to speak to fellow republicans. Every single Forum I attended, the questions they were going to ask were hand fed to my opponent in advance. They had "plant" people in the audience to ask questions that were LIES like, "you wrote that when you were elected you are going to close the Salisbury Zoo". I never wrote any such thing and my answer was, "My Wife worked for the Zoo for 18 years and hand raised most of the animals you see in the Zoo. If I even mentioned I'd be closing the Zoo she'd kill me". So you see, even at a local level, running for office is a difficult thing to do, especially when your own alleged party refuses to work with you. Now comes Donald Trump. His own party has refused to show any kind of support. FOX News, (an alleged ally) have attacked him in every possible way. The rest of the media have attacked him and those stations have run tens of millions of dollars worth of negative ads against this man and guess what, all of it has failed. Now, (after everyone recently dropped out) the media is saying it's time to regroup and figure out what we're going to do next. What's most interesting about Donald Trump is that he is not a politician and certainly not a professional career politician. THIS SCARES THE HELL OUT OF WASHINGTON D.C.. A President who doesn't kiss up to Congress? A President who refuses to play politics and only has the will of the people, (business) at heart? WHAT WILL ALL THESE CROOKED POLITICIANS DO NOW? Quite frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. The Main Stream Media has had a partnership with these politicians for decades. They have kept stories quiet and in today's world they now only publish, (for the most part) what they are hand fed, especially on a local level. When it comes to campaigns, BILLIONS of dollars are fed to these newspapers and TV news stations. The more you feed them, the more air time you mysteriously get. The Hogan/Brown race was a prime example. Brown would get 10 minutes air time while Hogan got 15 seconds. That being said, Maryland will play a HUGE role in this Presidential Election. Being a democrat state, Hogan won by a HUGE margin because people were sick and tired of the tax and spend democrats. The same will happen in this Presidential Election. However, that also means many other states will follow. What we have seen so far are only primary results. Meaning, democrats can only vote for democrats and republicans can only vote for republicans. However, when we get to the general elections, most of those democrats will be crossing party lines and voting for Trump and don't you dare tell me I am wrong. I have spoken to many democrats who absolutely refuse to vote for Hillary but more importantly, (like you) I have watched the Main Stream Media LIE to our faces every single day. I have watched them shove lying polls down our throats several times a day saying it is impossible for Trump to win. They have LIED so bad that right now every single one of you should never trust a word they say and STOP being brainwashed by their false information. Americans have had enough and this is the time to walk away from the Main Stream Media, they have right now proven they are liars. This is no miracle. Donald Trump is no Messiah. He's just a man who, (thank God) has had and seen enough. We are ALL fortunate this man has chosen to lead us back in the right direction. Is the man perfect, NO. Then again, is Hillary??? Hillary Clinton will lose miserable against Donald Trump, UNLESS THEY RIG THE ELECTION. We, (as Americans) need to join the "Trump Revolution", (as the Washington Post calls it) and overwhelmingly prove that we will NOT allow them to RIG this election. Very few people believe Obama actually won the first go around and definitely not the second go around. So Americans need to come together across the entire country and show massive support for this guy so they can't pull the same crooked game as the last time. Donald Trump is one man. One man cannot change the entire country alone. I firmly believe that ALL politicians currently in office are squirming like there's no tomorrow because Trump is telling them, the game is over. More people similar to Donald Trump who believe in changing our local and federal government will soon replace the career politicians and then, all of a sudden this one man movement will turn into a massive government overhaul. This scares the living crap out of politicians, lobbyists, media, corporations and other crooked foreign countries. I'm going to tell you something right now that I've not shared with you in the past. When Donald Trump came to Berlin, Maryland, did you know that NO ONE, not a Mayor, not a Councilman, not a Republican representative, NO ONE introduced Donald trump before he walked onto that stage. I say this because, guess what, Donald Trump is going to REMEMBER this. He's going to remember which politicians stood behind him and or who shied away from him. I LOVE IT! Republicans, (RINO'S?) you are now on notice. IT IS TIME TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.
Racist frat boy who 'put NOOSE on Ole Miss integration statue' as he faces 11-year prison sentence Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT The Justice Department has indicted a former Ole Miss student on civil rights charges after he allegedly hung a noose on a statue of his university's first black student. Graeme Phillip Harris, 20, of Alpharetta, Georgia, has been indicted on one count of conspiracy to violate civil rights and one count of using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students. The indictment is connected to a February 2014 incident in which a noose and a former Georgia flag, prominently featuring the Confederate battle emblem, were placed on a statue of James Meredith. Harris, who is white, was an Ole Miss student when the noose was left on the statue. It wasn't immediately clear whether Harris had an attorney to contact for comment on his behalf. University spokesman Danny Blanton said Friday that Harris is no longer enrolled and that university officials turned the case over to federal prosecutors and deferred to their judgment.. Harris has transferred to University of North Georgia – Oconee Campus, according to the Daily Mississippian. He is free on bond, though his movement is restricted to areas of Georgia and Mississippi. Elijah Cummings calls GOP front-runner Donald Trump "dangerous" Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Rep. Elijah Cummings called Donald Trump "dangerous" and said during a journalism conference in Baltimore on Saturday that the leading Republican candidate "turns us as Americans against each other." "When you have someone who is the number one candidate in the Republican Party, who spews out language that basically makes people feel comfortable with doing some violent things and who turns us as Americans against each other, that's a problem," the Baltimore Democrat said at the National Association of Black Journalists Region 1 Conference at Morgan State University. "He has gotten people who are frustrated, who are angry, who I think in many instances are racists," Cummings said of Trump supporters. Caitlyn Jenner to Pose Nude With American Flag Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Is this what the American flag was intended for? According to an Us Weekly source, Caitlyn Jenner, the 66-year-old former Olympic superstar (who went by Bruce Jenner then) will pose naked for Sports Illustrated wearing nothing but the American flag and a gold medal. It'll be published in the iconic magazine at some point before this year's Olympics in Brazil. The cover is supposed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of her win at the 1976 games in Montreal, Canada. The question many will have (and it's very fair) is this: why does it have to be naked? Considering who Jenner is affiliated with — the attention-seeking Kardashian clan, who've made a fortune corralling eyeballs through selfies, clothes, drama and pornography — it's probably a dumb question. But, puzzling and perhaps disturbing nonetheless. A Viewer Writes: WHO ELSE IS TO BLAME FOR NEEDLESS SUFFERING OF THE PUPPY MILL DOGS? Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Joe, I' recently mailed you about the rescue of the Puppy Mill Dogs, saying the State of Maryland had NO STATE INSPECTORS to investigate these type situations. I am sending you information I acquired from Ms. Emily Hovermales' at the "HSUS " when I ask her about our State/County Laws pertaining to Puppy Mills . Validation of this information can be directed to : ehovermale@humanesociety.org I researched on line & ask Ms Hovermale if Senate Bill #839 ---passed in 2011 -- concerning STATE LAW that requires Counties to license kennels over a certain size. Her response was that it DID PASS. Anyone having 15 or more unspayed female dogs over 6 months of age , kept for purpose of breeding /selling requires the breeder to have a license from the County. This information can be found at : http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/2011rs/chapters_noln/Ch_297_sb0839T.pdf. Each County determines the license requirements for kennels & many require an Inspection as part of that license requirement. I don't know IF Wicomico County requires inspections each year but hope so. Now that the Puppy Mill dogs are safe & have definitely been so well taken care of ------ Questions come to mind for many I'm sure, since this Rescue occurred. Having heard /read various information on SBY NEWS, TV & the Newspaper . It makes one wonder if they will be OR why they aren't answered as I've seen nothing reported concerning the below. How could this Puppy Mill , which was suppose to have been viewed by the then Administrator of the H.S. in either 2014 or 2015, have not been corrected? For certain , this Mill has had to be in terrible condition for a long, long time ! Just viewing the bldg. from the outside alone lets one know there is not proper ventilation! There are suggestions of making a crime as this - a Felony. Would this New Law actually put the person in jail since the System is now releasing criminals with lesser offences. It app[ears our jails can't contain them all? Animals are classified as Personal Property by Law-----Perhaps this is what needs to be changed too or offenders will not get punishment deserved. No one has stated if these Breeders were licensed by the County. Were they? If these type Breeders are not licensed OR inspected regularly, and IF those who are suppose to follow through on peoples continuous complaints as it appears happened with these dogs---------then animals will be left to continue to suffer? Does our County require License for Breeders-----Do they require Inspections ? If so by whom? ( I am told it's Animal Control but don't know if that's correct..) Where does the Public find a list of Licensed Breeders in their County?????? Hearing many people had reported this Puppy Mill makes one wonder---Is there a statement given to the person reporting suspected Puppy Mill or other Animal Cruelty Cases showing they reported? If not why isn't that recorded by each party----the person reporting & the person to whom it's reported so then it's know who was responsible should the question arise. YES, A PART OF THE BLAME FOR THE NEEDLESS SUFFERING OF THESE DOGS IS WITH THE BREEDER -----HOWEVER-----IT APPEARS " THE OTHER PART OF THE BLAME " LIES ELSEWHERE & IS IN NEED OF CORRECTING----NOW!
WICOMICO COUNTY HEROIN DEALER CONVICTED Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT WICOMICO HEROIN DEALER CONVICTED OF MULTIPLE FIREARM AND DRUG FELONIES On May 3, 2016, a Wicomico County jury convicted Jermaine Peters, age 34, of Wicomico County, Maryland, of possession with intent to distribute a large amount of heroin, being a felon in possession of regulated firearms, possession of a regulated firearm during a drug trafficking crime and numerous other related offenses. The events at issue stem from a Search and Seizure warrant which was executed on October 13, 2015, at 1402 Chateau Drive, Salisbury, Maryland. When officers arrived at 1402 Chateau Drive to execute the warrant, Peters was located on the back porch and a female was located in living room of the home. As officers searched a dresser in the master bedroom of the home they located two stolen handguns which were loaded with ammunition, numerous gun magazines containing live ammunition and several boxes with additional live ammunition. In the master bedroom closet, officers located a rifle and a shoe box which contained a large amount of U.S. currency. The total amount of U.S. currency recovered from the home and Peter's person was $118,667.26. Officers also located over one kilogram of heroin in a nightstand located in the master bathroom. The street value of the heroin was estimated to be over $700,000.00. Peters has multiple prior convictions including felony drug and firearms convictions. Sentencing in this case was deferred to allow for a pre-sentencing investigation to be completed. Peter's potential total sentence on the offenses for which he was convicted is one hundred twenty-one years with at least twenty years of that time being mandatory, non-parole eligible time. Wicomico County State's Attorney Matthew A. Maciarello commended the Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force and the Maryland State Police Gang Enforcement Unit for their work in the investigation and prosecution of this case. Mr. Maciarello also thanked Patrizia J. Coletta who prosecuted Peters. Governor Requires Food Stamp Recipients to Work 6 Hours a Week, This Happens Immediately After Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Food stamp recipients in Maine got a rude awakening when Gov. Paul LePage decided to impose a three-month limit on benefits for able-bodied adults without dependents (Abawds). Now, before all the raging liberals out there start throwing a hissy fit and talking about how much conservatives hate the poor and all that bleeding heart rhetoric, this limit is only enforced if the "Abawds" refuse to get a job working 20 hours a week, take job training, or volunteer six hours a week. Guess what happened when this rule was enforced? Nearly 80 percent of people on welfare were cut off the program because they refused to get a job or volunteer to work six hours a week. Teachers Union: Trump Is To Blame For School Bullying Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT The head of one of America's largest teachers unions said Wednesday that Donald Trump is creating "bullying environments" in schools nationwide that will take decades to repair. "What we've seen with Donald Trump is that there is now a new phenomenon in schools called the 'Trump Effect,'" Weingarten said. "It will take decades to overcome the way Donald Trump speaks and promotes violence, xenophobia and racism. This is creating bullying environments in schools across the country." MIKULSKI FIGHTS FOR BEACH REPLENISHMENT Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Senator visited Ocean City to meet with local leaders and inspect repairs to Ocean City's Fishing Pier OCEAN CITY – U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) today continued her Maryland Jobs Tour on the Eastern Shore, joining Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan to inspect repairs to Ocean City's Fishing Pier and beach sand dunes. Investments in Ocean City's coastal infrastructure are critical to Maryland's tourism economy."I'm here on Maryland's Eastern Shore to talk jobs, jobs, jobs," Senator Mikulski said. "In Ocean City, I've seen first-hand the impact that public investments in our coastal infrastructure have had in rebuilding and sustaining Maryland's tourism economy. According to estimates from the Corps, beach replenishment has protected Ocean City from more than $900 in damages, and saved Ocean City from Superstorm Sandy. I will never stop fighting so that the people of Maryland have a government on their side, supporting jobs today and jobs tomorrow." As Maryland and the nation grapple with severe weather events, including Super Storm Sandy, beach replenishment programs protect jobs along with billions of dollars in public and private infrastructure. Beach renourishment along the Atlantic Coast in Ocean City provides hurricane, erosion and coastal flooding protection for coastal communities. From 1991 to 2016, it has prevented over $900 million in damages to businesses and homes. Senator Mikulski has fought for federal investments in Coastal protection and erosion prevention measures, including providing $14 million in emergency supplemental funding following Super Storm Sandy. Justice Department program to no longer use ‘disparaging’ terms ‘felons’ and ‘convicts’ Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT The Justice Department's Office of Justice Programs is eschewing the terms "felon" and "convict" when officials refer to individuals convicted of crimes, opting instead for less "disparaging labels," Assistant Attorney General Karol Mason announced Wednesday. The Office of Justice Programs plans to substitute terminology such as "person who committed a crime" and "individual who was incarcerated" in speeches and other communications as part of an effort to remove barriers that officials say hinder progress of those who re-enter society after completing their prison sentences. "I have come to believe that we have a responsibility to reduce not only the physical but also the psychological barriers to reintegration," Ms. Mason wrote Wednesday in a guest post for The Washington Post. "The labels we affix to those who have served time can drain their sense of self-worth and perpetuate a cycle of crime, the very thing reentry programs are designed to prevent." Ocean Downs Casino, Union Employees Reach New Agreement Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT OCEAN CITY – The six-month contract dispute between the Casino at Ocean Downs and almost 100 union employees has finally come to an end. After several recent weeks of stalemate both sides met at the bargaining table, struck a compromise and thusly ratified a new collective bargaining agreement that runs until October 2017. "This deal is a solid step forward for Ocean Downs employees," said Mishy Leiblum, head organizer for Unite Here Local 7. "This was the first time the employees at Ocean Downs ever formed picket lines or handed out leaflets. I know the employees are pleased with the results." Leiblum believes the increased picketing and petitioning at Ocean Downs in the past few weeks was vital in getting casino officials to agree to a return to the bargaining table, after they had drawn a proverbial line in the sand with a proclaimed "final offer," which the union overwhelmingly rejected by a 91% margin, back in March. Ariz. student gets felony charge for yearbook pic prank Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT MESA, Ariz. - An Arizona high school student was hit with dozens of criminal charges after horrified school officials discovered he had exposed his penis in a football team photo seen by thousands of students. Det. Steve Berry of the Mesa Police Department said as a result of the incident, 19-year-old Hunter Osborn has been booked for 69 counts of indecent exposure -- a class 1 misdemeanor -- and one count of furnishing harmful items to minors -- a class 4 felony, reports CBS affiliate KPHO in Phoenix. Berry said they arrived at that number of criminal charges because there were 69 students, ranging in age from 15 to 19, and 10 faculty members present when the picture was taken. If individuals in the photo are older than 18 and do not wish to press charges, the number of criminal counts could be reduced. "It is still an ongoing investigation," Berry said. "The number of charges may go up or down depending upon how the investigation continues." Everyone Rush To Giant Before This Amazing Pasta Sale Is Over Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Pre-packaged pasta sides are a cheap and easy addition to your meal, and they're even more affordable if you wait for a good sale. When we say a "good" sale, though, that doesn't mean a sale like this one at the supermarket Giant. Reader Kevin noticed this display, where someone was asked to go to the trouble to place shelf tags on every variety of Knorr pasta packets, even though the packets are effectively not on sale at all. Those shelf tags may have driven sales, since we're drawn to bright and shiny signs, but not because there was an actual sale. BREAKING: Bernie Sanders has won the Democratic primary in Indiana. Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT Bernie Sanders is leading Hillary Clinton in Indiana's Democratic primary Tuesday night with more than half the vote counted, as he seeks a shot of momentum for his flagging campaign and she hopes to hammer one more nail in the coffin of the Vermont senator's upstart bid. With 56 percent of precincts reporting, Sanders had 53 percent to 47 percent for Clinton, according to the Associated Press. Less than a half hour after results began pouring in, Sanders rallied supporters in Louisville, Kentucky, where voters will head to the polls on May 17. Ticking through his standard stump lines while bashing Clinton for her paid speeches and 2002 vote in favor of invading Iraq, Sanders told a boisterous crowd that their ideas will prevail. "I'll tell you what is extremely exciting for me, and that is that in primary after primary, caucus after caucus, we end up winning the vote of people 45 years of age and younger," Sanders said. "And that is important because it tells me that ideas that we are fighting for are the ideas for the future of America and the future of the Democratic Party." Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT A new report claims that food stamp enrollment is expected to drop by one million in 2016, and that decrease is a direct result of stricter rules that will be put into place. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that enrollment for food stamps will decrease by such a significant amount next year due to new guidelines surrounding timeline and job training that will be reimposed. According to the CBPP, states will have to reimpose requirements that people who don't have a disability or claim any dependents must enroll in job training or work at least 20 hours per week if they want more than three months of food stamps. Ed Bolen of the CBPP wrote that the group expects these new requirements to make the enrollment rate for food stamps drop significantly, and that will come mostly because they will have no choice, as many states do not offer training or jobs that meet the reimposed requirements. Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT New emails recently obtained by Judicial Watch show a coordinated effort that goes all the way up the chain of command to the White House. The plan? To deliberately mislead the American public about the reasons for the Benghazi attacks in an effort to cover up for the total intelligence failure of the Obama administration, and especially Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. As Fox reports: Catherine Herridge reported some new developments in the investigation into the Sept. 2012Benghazi attack, including the release of documents that lead directly to the White House. Among the documents, obtained by Judicial Watch through a FOIA request, is an email from senior White House adviser Ben Rhodes to other top administration officials, including Press Secretary Jay Carney. Under the subject "prep call with Susan," Rhodes wrote that the goal for Rice's appearances on Sunday talk shows would be "to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure or policy." The message was sent three days after the attacks, which left four Americans dead at a U.S. consulate and nearby CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Days later, Rice would go on numerous Sunday news programs, including on Fox News Sunday, to falsely assert that the Benghazi attack was spontaneous and occurred during a protest over an anti-Islam video. Since that time, the White House has come under fierce criticism from Republicans, who allege that the administration altered the CIA's talking points about how the Benghazi attack unfolded. Monkey bars, swings blamed for rise in playground concussions Posted: 08 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT CHICAGO — Playground concussions are on the rise, according to a new government study, and monkey bars and swings are most often involved. Most injuries studied were mild, but all concussions are potentially serious, and the researchers say the trend raises public health and safety concerns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study examined national 2001-2013 data on playground injuries to children ages 14 and younger who received emergency-room treatment. Of almost 215,000 children on average treated yearly, almost 10 percent — about 21,000 annually — had traumatic brain injuries including concussions. Only nonfatal injuries were included.
