PREVENTING MOSQUITOES AND THEIR BITES

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:00 PM PDT

Salisbury, MD - The recent rainfall and expected warm temperatures may result in the increase of mosquitoes in our area. "The most effective way to prevent mosquitoes and their bites is for everyone to eliminate standing water around their homes." said Lori Brewster, Wicomico County Health Officer.

Currently, the Zika virus is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. While that specific species is not normally found in our area, the Asian Tiger mosquito is quite prevalent. These mosquitoes demonstrate a strong preference for breeding in small, man-made containers you probably don't even think about. This is very different from our native mosquitoes that tend to breed in wetlands of all types, including swamps and marshes.

Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance; they can also carry and spread serious diseases, including Zika. The good news is that homeowners can greatly reduce an infestation. We strongly encourage you to follow these simple steps below. It may be all you need to do to kill the buzz and take back your own yard.

Walk around your house, patio, garage, etc. and look carefully for anything that retains water – even just a little bit of water. If you find any, dump the water and either throw the item away or store it in or under something that does not collect water.

Tiger mosquitoes tend to remain at ground level, especially under ground covers such as English Ivy. Other favorite spots are under decks and shrubs, basement stairwells and crawl spaces. Tigers prefer containers with stagnant water (not fresh) that have accumulated sediment and organic matter. Here are some of the biggest culprits to look for:
Corrugated drain pipe off of downspouts. Each trough is a potential breeding ground. If you have many feet of drainpipe, consider replacing it with smooth PVC piping.
Children's toys, especially plastic toys that have small areas where water can pool. Keep in mind that the toy itself may be very big, like a bike or a play house, but if it has handles or any indentation where water can pool in small amounts, it's a breeding ground.
Tarps that hold water, even just a little.
Tires not on cars that are collecting water.
Plastic chairs, tables and all outside furniture, especially if it is upside down.
Flower pots, especially those with a saucer underneath it to catch water.
Wheel barrels stored improperly.
Anything that can hold small amounts of water. Even large things that hold water, like bird baths, usually have calm areas around the edges where mosquitoes can breed.
All containers, such as buckets, pails, water bottles, trash cans (including lids), storage totes, recycling containers, etc. Even if these items are kept upside down, water can often pool in the handles or lips of the container.

In addition to eliminating standing water, the Health Department encourages everyone to avoid mosquito bites by:

· Using an EPA-registered insect repellant. When used as directed, these insect repellents are proven safe and effective even for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

o Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than 2 months old. Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol on children younger than 3 years old.

· Treat items such as clothing and gear with permethrin or buy permethrin-treated clothes.

Do not use permethrin products directly on skin.

4 Proven Sales Strategies To Get And Keep Customers

Posted: 24 May 2016 08:30 PM PDT

Whether business-to-consumer or business-to-business, sales jobs account for a huge share of the workforce.

And with competition in sales fierce, you might think there would be plenty of analysis guiding companies and workers on how to do their very best to win and keep customers.

Not so, say sales experts Dave Stein and Steve Andersen. Most commentary on the topic focuses on one narrow aspect of the job – closing the deal.

"Point-of-sale strategies make sense for retail, although I think most customers and consumers want more from a salesperson than thinly veiled interest just to get a signed contract," says Stein, a widely cited strategist.

"Customers want to be confident that they are doing business with organizations that understand their business and the uniqueness of their requirements," says Andersen, president and founder of Performance Methods Inc. "A long-term, trust-based relationship proves beneficial for both parties – especially for a B2B customer. They don't want to have to go looking for a new provider each time they require additional solutions, products and services."

As co-authors of "Beyond the Sales Process: 12 Proven Strategies for a Customer-Driven World" (BeyondTheSalesProcess.com), Stein and Andersen offer tips to sales people for a long-term strategy in getting and keeping customers.

• Do your homework. If you're going to connect your services to a customer's needs, know what those needs are ahead of time, before a potential sale has even started to take shape. Don't assume that the goals of the next CEO you speak with are the same as the last one. Do research specific to each prospect.
• Give them a reason to love you. Get to know them on a personal level. Learn about their passions and what makes them tick. Relationships matter – a lost concept among many in sales today.
• Stay engaged with your customer after your last sale and before your next. As with any relationship, customers want to know they're appreciated and respected on a human level, not just financially. Stay in touch and try to engage with them regularly to discuss the things that matter most to them. Follow their business on social media and react to their successes.
• Leverage past successes to earn their commitment for the future. Validate the impact of what your solutions, products and services are doing for their business. As progress continues, explain to them how your will continue to create value with them in the long-term.

"As ink dries on the contract, stress levels drop for the salesperson, but it rises for the customer," Stein says. "Keep your eye on the ball."

Andersen says, "It all boils down to them trusting you – before, during and after the sale."

How Women Can Recover After Hitting Rock Bottom

Posted: 24 May 2016 08:00 PM PDT

Movies from the 1980s profiled the prototypical "It Girl" – pretty, blond, wealthy, who drove luxury sports cars to high school, was liked by other girls and chased by all the boys.

Jane Zarse was that girl, and the persona continued into the '90s, when she eventually graduated Boston University on the dean's list and began acting in New York City and in Hollywood films.

That's what nearly every young woman wants, right? Unfortunately for Zarse, it was a parallel image of her true self, she says. All the while, she'd been devolving into alcoholism and other self-abuses.

"My folks did very well and thought they were doing all the right things for their kids, but we never – never – spoke about our problems," says Zarse, author of "Love and Compassion Is My Religion," (http://tinyurl.com/z5u236t).

"It was more important to keep up appearances, especially how we appeared to ourselves. After punishing myself with substance abuse, doomed relationships and more, I'd finally hit rock bottom."

It's the life story for countless Americans. For Zarse, a non-romantic relationship opened her eyes, aiding her to a robust recovery and a new way of experiencing spirituality. She offers insights for those who need help recovering after hitting rock bottom.

• You can't change or improve what you don't acknowledge. Spirituality includes more than mental abstractions; it's about applyingtranscendent insights into everyday life. Admitting problems, for instance, means transcending the powerful forces of pride, habit, complacency, etc. Hitting rock bottom forces you to see what you've been hiding for so long – that ugly, desperately addicted side of your self.
• Don't fall for a false sense of control. When alcohol, serial dating and unsuccessful job prospects gave Zarse the sense that her life was spinning out of control, she developed an eating disorder. It gave her a false sense of security via an unhealthy expression of discipline. While recovering from rock bottom, such temptations may occur. If so, be honest that you may be grasping, once again, at something unsustainable.
• Successful relationships require kindness and respect. As the "It Girl," Zarse received plenty of attention from men. If she wanted a relationship, she was able to find herself in one quickly. But an entitled mentality, coupled with substance abuse, fostered toxicity in her first marriage. You get back what you put into relationships.

"I remember thinking: What's the point of quitting drinking? – I'll still be thinking about it constantly," Zarse says. "If you find yourself with similar thoughts, it may be time seek help. Remember, that help may come in unexpected people."

About Jane Zarse

Jane Zarse grew up in the private school world of privilege and excess as she spiraled into alcoholism before joining Alcoholics Anonymous and finding her way back. In "Love and Compassion Is My Religion," (http://tinyurl.com/z5u236t) she writes about learning to love herself again and how finding spirituality helped her do so.

Black Lives Matter Sex Scandal

Posted: 24 May 2016 07:30 PM PDT

Black Lives Matter has a character problem. As HeatStreet's Emily Zanotti writes:

One of the leaders of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, Charles Wade, was arrested on human trafficking and prostitution charges during an April sting operation in Maryland, according to multiple press reports. Wade, the co-founder of Operation Help (sometimes known as "Hush") — an organization that provided clothing, food and shelter for #BlackLivesMatter activists protesting in Ferguson, Missouri — is accused of forcing a 17-year-old girl into prostitution.

The Daily Caller obtained a police report stating that Wade was picked up in a College Park police sting after cops responded to a backpage.com ad from a woman who claimed to be 23, offering sexual services at an area Howard Johnson hotel.

When police arrived and confronted the woman, who turned out to be 17, she identified Wade, who had been watching from the parking lot, as her "manager" named "CJ." The police then arrested Wade who, according to the report, had rented the hotel room and was carrying three cell phones.

According to the police report, the woman told police that "CJ" knew she was underage and "wasn't worried" because she'd turn 18 in a few months. She told investigators that she provided CJ with all of the money she made in her endeavors.

While #BlackLivesMatter claims to have no actual leadership, Wade has been cited numerous times as a top figure in the loose coalition of activists. His efforts in Ferguson (including ordering 40 pizzas for Baltimore protesters) received positive coverage from the Washington Post and POLITICO and he's helped facilitate celebrity involvement in #BlackLivesMatter, working with A-listers like John Legend and wife Chrissy Tiegen (he's also a former employee of Beyonce's sister, Solange Knowles).

This is obviously deeply troubling. Consider Black Lives Matter's own mission statement:

Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks' contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression.

We here at AAN are unclear on the details, but we're pretty sure that forcing children into sex work contributes to their dehumanization.

Obama Shipping Transgender Illegals to THIS Red State

Posted: 24 May 2016 07:00 PM PDT

Amid activist calls for additional protections for transgendered migrants, the Obama administration is planning a new detention facility for illegal immigrants that would include a unit designated solely for transgender detainees, according to a new report.

Fusion reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confirmed plans for a separate transgender unit within the new facility, slated to open in November in Alvarado, Texas.

"The facility is expected to house about 700 detainees, including a separate 36-bed unit for transgender individuals," Carl Rusnok, an ICE spokesman, told Fusion.

The facility will be called the Prairieland Dention Center and provide each transgender detainee with an special detention plan "covering items such as searches, clothing options, hygiene practices, medical care, and housing assignments," Rusnok added to Fusion.

Obama's Sex Change Operation Mandate

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:30 PM PDT

President Obama's Department of Health and Human Services implemented a rule change to the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) last week mandating that all health providers receiving taxpayer dollars must perform sex-change operations or lose their federal funding.

The final rule states that, under Title IX, any hospital receiving funding from HHS must "treat individuals consistent with their gender identity."

The rule provides no religious exemption. In other words, religious hospitals that receive taxpayer dollars via Medicaid or Medicare will be required to perform sex-change operations or get cut off financially. The rule change is not the only directive from the Obama administration forcing individuals to embrace the transgender agenda. Just last week, the administration sent letters to every school district in the countrymandating that they open bathrooms, locker rooms, and showers to all students, regardless of their biological sex. Meaning that under Obama's directive, male students must be allowed to shower with female students if the former call themselves a girl.

Update From Teen Injured At Stephen Decatur

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:26 PM PDT

Well, as of today my boyfriend was discharged. I got to see him for a few minutes before he left and just that little moment of time meant everything. I'm so blessed, all of this love and support from people I know, and have never even met. I have troubles getting around to all the messages and posts about me, my dad's was shared over 1,000 times. I wish I could personally say thank you to each and everyone of those individuals. However, my sleep schedule may not allow that. The prayers are being answered by the minute, I could have not survived this accident, I could have needed surgery. But through Him, I can do anything. Through Him I will be better than ever. I am able to eat food with out getting sick, I am able to move my legs with more ease, and tomorrow I may even be able to walk. Thank you all for your prayers, God is good.

The Most Important Battle of the Week: Blocking Obama’s War on the Suburbs

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:00 PM PDT

Imagine if vulnerable Republican incumbents, instead of curling up into a fetal position in the face of Democrat attacks, had an 80-20 issue relevant to the everyday lives of their constituents to shove down the throats of their opponents? Well, Senator Mike Lee has just granted them that opportunity with his amendment to the 2017 Transportation-HUD (Housing and Urban Development) appropriations bill, which would defund Obama's war on the suburbs, otherwise known as the Affirmative Further Fair Housing (AFFH) rule placed into the federal register last July. Will GOP members, particularly Senators Ron Johnson, Kelly Ayotte, and Pat Toomey, take yes for an answer?

The AFFH represents the worst form of social transformation without representation and is the capstone of Obama's effort to fundamentally transform America. It is an ad hoc federal gerrymander to force local governments to impose low-income housing in areas HUD targets for social engineering while funneling funds to left-wing community organizing groups to transfer people from the inner city into suburban neighborhoods. It represents one of the worst violations of federalism, property rights and the true ideals of equal opportunity expressed in the Declaration of Independence.

Every American has the right and opportunity to purchase property, housing or rentals in any part of the country. However, the federal government has no constitutional power to mandate the breakdown of natural settlement and development for different neighborhoods and counties in order to enrich their favored NGOs. Under the AFFH, HUD unilaterally decides that not enough individuals from a given race or ethnicity live in a particular jurisdiction. Then, in order to leverage the local government to "identify significant determinants that influence or contribute to those issues, and set forth fair housing priorities and goals to address fair housing issues and determinants," HUD threatens to withhold community development block grants.

Subject: Sheriff David Clarke: ‘The Only Person Safe in a Gun-Free Zone Is the Criminal’

Posted: 24 May 2016 05:00 PM PDT

During his May 20 speech to the NRA Leadership Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, Sheriff David Clarke Jr. said, "The only person safe in a gun free zone … is the criminal."

He made this comment while referencing the horrendous May 12, 2006, sexual attack suffered by Kimberly Corban in her room on a college campus.

Clarke said:

" This brave woman voluntarily shares the story of her horrific event so that other women do not have to experience what she did. She found out when seconds mattered, the police were not a 911 call away. She also learned that the only person safe in a gun-free zone — like a college campus — is the criminal. She knows that law-abiding people have been disarmed in these gun-free zones by their government."

He paused, then looked at the audience and said, "Don't ever let anyone tell you to outsource your safety to the government." He added, "Defend yourself in ways [that are] more advantageous to you, then dial 911."

Union flips out over church's school pizza giveaway

Posted: 24 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT

It's the mother of all food fights – church ladies versus lunch ladies.

The controversy involves a church that received permission from the Seattle School District to serve free pizza to students at three area high schools.

A union representing public school cafeteria workers in Seattle, Washington erupted with rage last week – warning that the weekly pizza giveaway could result in cafeteria layoffs. They even accused Bethany Community Church of proselytizing with pepperoni.

"We are not telling them a Bible story before they get pizza," Youth Pastor Nick Steinloski told television station KOMO.

He also said it is about showing the kids the church cares about them.

No sermon. Just two, hot slices of cheesy goodness – and according to the kids it's a heckuva lot better than what they would get in the school cafeteria.

To say the lunch ladies got their hairnets in a twist would be an understatement.

The International Union of Operating Engineers launched a campaign to intimidate and bully the church into submission. It was ugly even by the union's low standards.

Subject: Cleta Mitchell: DOJ Should Prosecute John Koskinen

Posted: 24 May 2016 04:00 PM PDT

The Justice Department should prosecute IRS chief John Koskinen for lying to Congress — just like the Bush administration Justice Department went after Yankees ace Roger Clemens for the same offense, lawyer Cleta Mitchell says.

In an interview on C-SPAN Monday, the lawyer who represents conservative groups unfairly targeted by the IRS, weighed in on an impeachment resolution Republicans have filed against the tax agency's commissioner.

"It's important for the institution of Congress to ensure that officials [who] come before them, who mislead or lie to Congress and congressional committees in testimony, I think it's really important for Congress to hold those people accountable," she said.

"Congress sent a letter when Roger Clemens … testified before the Oversight and Government Reform Committee when the Democrats had control of Congress, and he testified about the use of steroids, he said he didn't use steroids," she said.

She noted at that time California's then-Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman "sent a letter to the Justice Department, the Bush Justice Department, and said you should prosecute him because he lied, and the Department of Justice prosecuted Roger Clemens, not once but twice, because the first trial ended in a mistrial and a hung jury."

Expert: Beware of marked-up medical equipment prices

Posted: 24 May 2016 03:00 PM PDT

BALTIMORE —Some call the prices assigned to certain types of medical equipment arbitrary and completely inflated.

The chances are good that consumers will not learn about the medical markup until they get stuck with the bill.

Hospital rates have been regulated for nearly 50 years in Maryland. The idea was to create accountability, but costs associated with the care and services received in a physician's office are a whole different story.

When Laurel Funk's son broke his hand, she was glad it healed quickly, but she wasn't glad when she got a medical bill that simply floored her.

"First thing I thought was, it must have been a mistake," Funk said.

She got a $300 bill for a hand splint that her son received in the doctor's office. Funk came to learn that even though the doctor is in her insurance network, the medical supplier he used is not.

"So, I was still smarting from this bill that I paid, and then my son and I got online and he said, 'Mom, this thing only costs like $38,'" Funk said.

MS-13 members convicted of racketeering, murder charges

Posted: 24 May 2016 02:30 PM PDT

Greenbelt, Maryland – A federal jury today convicted three members of La Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, on racketeering and murder changes. Jorge Enrique Moreno-Aguilar, Juan Alberto Ortiz-Orellana, and Minor Perez-Chach face a maximum sentence of life in prison for conspiring to participate in a racketeering enterprise and a mandatory sentence of life in prison for murder in aid of racketeering.
"Today's conviction is a satisfying conclusion to a horrific crime perpetrated by members of a violent and deadly transnational criminal gang," said Andre R. Watson, Special Agent in Charge for Baltimore's Homeland Security Investigations office. "HSI is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to disrupt and dismantle these transnational criminal organizations, both here in the homeland and around the world."
All three defendants were found guilty of conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise and murder in aid of racketeering. Moreno-Aguilar and Ortiz-Orellana were each convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering. Ortiz-Orellana was also convicted of discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and murder resulting from the brandishing/discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. Perez-Chach was also convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by an alien and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.

According to evidence presented at the three-week trial, from at least 2009 through October 2014, MS-13 members planned and committed murders, attempted murders, assaults, and robberies in Prince George's, Montgomery, and Frederick Counties. Gang members also extorted brothel operators and owners of other illegal businesses and tampered with and retaliated against witnesses, among other crimes. Moreno-Aguilar and Ortiz-Orellana were members and associates of the MS-13 Sailors Locotes Salvatrucha Westside Clique and Perez-Chach was a member of the MS-13 Langley Park Salvatrucha Clique.

In January 2013, defendants Moreno-Aguilar and Ortiz-Orellana targeted an individual associated with the rival 18th Street gang, obtaining photographs of the victim from Facebook and conspiring to murder him with other members of MS-13. On March 12, 2013, Moreno-Aguilar and Ortiz-Orellana went to Capitol Heights, Maryland and Ortiz-Orellana shot the victim multiple times outside his home, killing him.

In the early morning hours of February 23, 2013, Perez-Chach met a man in a restaurant whom he believed to be a member of MS-13 who had previously testified against MS-13 members in federal trials in Greenbelt, Maryland. In fact, the victim was not the witness from the previous MS-13 trials, according to trial evidence. Perez-Chach followed the victim to his home in Hyattsville, Maryland where he stabbed the victim to death while another member of MS-13 attacked the victim with a machete. During his arrest on May 20, 2013, Perez-Chach was found in illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Moreno-Aguilar and Ortiz-Orellana also face a maximum of 10 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering. Ortiz-Orellana also faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for murder resulting from the use and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence; and a minimum of 10 years for discharging of a firearm during a crime of violence. Perez-Chach also faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for being a felon in possession of firearm and ammunition, and 10 years for being an alien in possession of firearm or ammunition. Moreno-Aguilar was acquitted of brandishing/discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and murder resulting from the brandishing/discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.

In addition to these convictions, 8 of the other 13 defendants charged in this investigation have pleaded guilty to their roles in the racketeering conspiracy.

MS-13 is a transnational criminal organization composed primarily of immigrants or descendants from El Salvador. Branches or "cliques" of MS-13, one of the largest street gangs in the United States, operate throughout Prince George's County, Montgomery County, and Frederick County, Maryland. MS-13 members are required to commit acts of violence to maintain membership and discipline within the gang. One of the principal rules of MS-13 is that its members must attack and kill rivals, known as "chavalas," whenever possible.

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations special agents out of Baltimore and supported by the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Justice Department's Criminal Division, Prince George's County Police Department, Montgomery County Police Department, Prince George's County State's Attorney, and Montgomery County State's Attorney.

Watters Investigates Why Americans Are So Angry

Hillary Clinton pocketed $21.6 MILLION in two years making speeches to corporate America

Posted: 24 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT

"Follow the money." That telling phrase, which has come to summarize the Watergate scandal, has been a part of the lexicon since 1976. It's shorthand for political corruption: At what point do "contributions" become bribes, "constituent services" turn into quid pro quos and "charities" become slush funds?

Ronald Reagan was severely criticized in 1989 when, after he left office, he was paid $2 million for a couple of speeches in Japan. "The founding fathers would have been stunned that an occupant of the highest office in this land turned it into bucks," sniffed a Columbia professor.

So what would Washington and Jefferson make of Hillary Rodham Clinton? Mandatory financial disclosures released this month show that, in just the two years from April 2013 to March 2015, the former first lady, senator and secretary of state collected $21,667,000 in "speaking fees," not to mention the cool $5 mil she corralled as an advance for her 2014 flop book, "Hard Choices."

Throw in the additional $26,630,000 her ex-president husband hoovered up in personal-appearance "honoraria," and the nation can breathe a collective sigh of relief that the former first couple — who, according to Hillary, were "dead broke" when they left the White House in 2001 with some of the furniture in tow — can finally make ends meet.

No wonder Donald Trump calls her "crooked Hillary."

Press Release: Dr. Karen Salmon Named Next Maryland State Superintendent

Posted: 24 May 2016 01:15 PM PDT

State Board Selects Dr. Salmon After National Search; Term Begins July 1

The Maryland State Board of Education today selected Dr. Karen B. Salmon as the State's next State Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1.

Dr. Salmon will begin serving as Acting Superintendent on June 1, and take the helm as State Superintendent one month later. She will succeed Interim State Superintendent Jack Smith, who earlier this year was named the next Superintendent of the Montgomery County Public Schools.

The State Board voted unanimously to elevate Dr. Salmon to the State Superintendent position, pending final contract negotiations.

"I am committed to collaborating with all of our stakeholders to ensure a world-class education for every Maryland public school student," Dr. Salmon said. "I want to build on Maryland's past accomplishments, streamline programs at the Maryland State Department of Education, and articulate a shared vision for educational excellence."

State Board President Guffrie M. Smith, Jr., said Dr. Salmon comes to the position well prepared to lead the State's system to continued improvement.

"Dr. Salmon knows our State, understands our challenges, and has a track record of developing effective solutions to educational issues through collaboration," Mr. Smith said. "The Board looks forward with great confidence to working alongside Dr. Salmon as we move our schools and our students toward new levels of success."

Dr. Salmon has spent the vast majority of her career in Maryland public education. She joined the Maryland State Department of Education last August as Assistant State Superintendent for College and Career Readiness before taking over as Interim Deputy Superintendent for School Effectiveness earlier this year.

Prior to joining the MSDE staff, Dr. Salmon served as Superintendent of the Bay Shore Union Free School District in Bay Shore, NY. She moved to New York after 10 years as Superintendent of the high-performing Talbot County Public School System.

Dr. Salmon spent more than 30 years as an educator on Maryland's Eastern Shore, beginning her career as a special education teacher in the Caroline County Public Schools. She later became a vocational coordinator and an assistant principal in the Caroline schools before moving to Talbot County as Coordinator of Services for Exceptional Children. Dr. Salmon became Assistant Superintendent of the Talbot County schools in 1997 and Superintendent in 2003.

Named the Maryland Superintendent of the Year in 2012, Dr. Salmon is the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her educational career. Dr. Salmon holds a Ph.D. in Special Education/Administration from the University of Maryland College Park, as well as a Masters in Special Education from the same institution. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from the University of Delaware.

A native of Harford County and the daughter of an educator, Dr. Salmon and her husband John reside in Bozman, MD. They are the parents of two grown daughters: Lauren, an oncologist living in Virginia, and Rachael, a student at the University of Maryland College Park. Both children graduated from Talbot County public schools.

Board President Smith said the Maryland State Board of Education would like to thank the citizens of Maryland for enthusiastically participating and providing invaluable insights throughout the selection process. Community members throughout the State shared with the Board their perspectives, opinions, concerns and ideas through various meetings, focus groups, letters and surveys. Board members found this input invaluable in evaluating each candidate and reaching a final decision, he said.

Department of Natural Resources Outlines Fee Reductions

Posted: 24 May 2016 12:00 PM PDT

Following Maryland Governor Larry Hogan's announcement that the state is eliminating or reducing $60 million in state-issued fees, the Department of Natural Resources outlined its proposals which will save Marylanders approximately $2.71 million over the next five years.

As part of the program, military veterans will receive free admission to Maryland State Parks on Veterans Day and half-priced admission year-round with proof of service. In addition, fourth grade students and their families will receive free admission to all state parks through the National Park Service's Every Kid in a Park pass. Both promotions are effective immediately.

"These strategically chosen reductions are another step forward in alleviating the complicated and taxing fiscal demands that have been placed on Marylanders," Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. "We are grateful for Governor Hogan's commitment to reducing fees and making access to our public lands more affordable."

Additional fees that were eliminated or reduced:

Some retailers could reject Baltimore if City Council hikes minimum wage, Young says

Posted: 24 May 2016 11:00 AM PDT

LAS VEGAS — The debate over whether to raise the minimum wage in Baltimore to a possible $15 per hour has reached from City Hall to the meetings and social gatherings here in this gilded desert town.

As the International Council of Shopping Centers annual RECon convention ramped up this weekend, some of the city's top officials are here trying to lure new retail and restaurants to Baltimore.

But, they say, a movement now underway to increase the minimum wage in the city to $15 per hour could squash those efforts.

The issue and pending legislation in the City Council was front and center as negotiations opened for possible new Subways, Target stores and other mid-to-large size retailers for possible location in distressed parts of the city.

BMX Professional Tony Hoffman to Speak on Dangers of Substance Abuse, Paths to Recovery

Posted: 24 May 2016 10:45 AM PDT

Salisbury – The Family Addiction Awareness and Prevention Project and The City of Salisbury will bring motivational speaker and BMX champion Tony Hoffman to Salisbury on June 1st and 2nd. Tony will speak to high school students about his personal experience with drug addiction and the devastating toll drug and alcohol dependence has on families. Mr. Hoffman will be joined by Public Health Officer Lori Brewster, States Attorney Matt Maciarello, and representatives of local law enforcement at 4 sessions to be held at high schools in Salisbury and throughout the county. "Paths to Recovery," a community conversation catered to parents and families, will take place at 7:00 p.m., June 1st in the Wicomico Room at Salisbury University. This free event will be open to all members of the public.

The human and financial toll of drug addiction is enormous. With the staggering surge in the abuse of opioids and other dangerous narcotics nationwide, it is a toll which is increasingly being felt here on the peninsula. Local hospitals saw more overdoses in the first three months of this year than in all of 2015. In a recent study, BEACON estimated that substance abuse costs the Eastern Shore economy approximately $1.12 billion per year. It is estimated that 87% of crime in Wicomico County is directly connected to those who are addicted.

The Family Addiction Awareness and Prevention Project was created to address the scourge of opioid and other drug addiction on the Eastern Shore. The project's goal is to have every student in the classroom—not the courtroom—at the end of the summer. In the few months since its inception, the group has secured the necessary donations and support to bring BMX professional and recovering addict Tony Hoffman to Salisbury.

Tony Hoffman was introduced to BMX racing at age 12. His talent brought him multiple sponsorship contracts with major companies, and landed him at the top of the national rankings. At the height of his early success, Tony began to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Within just a few short years, he had gone from the covers of BMX magazines to the depths of heroin abuse. Tony is one of the lucky ones, having survived his addiction. He is now on a mission to tell the youth of the nation just how devastating drug addiction is and how easily it can happen to anyone. His inspirational story of fame, decline, and recovery will focus on the dangers of turning to drugs and falling into despair.

Paths to Recovery is a FREE event. Concerned citizens, and especially those seeking help are encouraged to attend. Recognizing and treating substance use disorder early provides the best hope for recovery. Information on brain diseases and treatment options will be available.

Baltimore Special Ed. Teacher Charged With Human Trafficking, Prostitution

Posted: 24 May 2016 10:30 AM PDT

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—A special education teacher has been placed on administrative leave after he was arrested on charges of human trafficking and prostitution, according to police and a school letter obtained by WJZ.

In the letter sent to parents on Friday, Chief School Supports Officer Karl Perry Sr. says that NACA Freedom & Democracy II Special Education Teacher Michael Brandon Osikomaiya was arrested and charged on May 19th.

Police say 23-year-old Osikomaiya was arrested in Baltimore County on the afternoon of May 19 after investigators learned that there was a 16-year-old girl advertising prostitution on the internet.

"An undercover officer contacted the girl and set up a meeting at a Baltimore County motel," Baltimore County police said.

Police say Osikomaiya was allegedly her pimp.

NR 5/23/16 Statewide Open Air and Burn Ban Information

Posted: 24 May 2016 10:15 AM PDT

MARYLAND OPEN AIR BURNING AND

BURN BAN QUESTIONS ANSWERED

STATEWIDE (May 23, 2016) – Marylanders are reminded of safety and jurisdictional requirements when burning outdoors.  Open air burning is defined as a fire where any material is burned in the open or in a receptacle other than a furnace, incinerator, or other equipment connected to a stack or chimney.  It also includes other fires such as campfires.
Alternatives to open air burning include: composting, disposal at a local landfill where the yard debris can be turned into mulch or periodic curb-side pick-up by your regular trash collector (where available).
If you must burn, take the time to ensure that all safety and regulatory precautions have been taken.  Permits may be required for all open air burning except for small recreational fires such as campfires.  The permit from the Department of Natural resources is in addition to and does not substitute for a permit from the local health department.  For permit information, please call your local health department, fire department or contact the Department of Natural Resources Forest Service Office at (410) 260-8531 or go online at: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/forests/Pages/wfm.aspx
Tips for open air burning:
·        Don't burn on windy days.
·        Have hand tools and a ready water supply on site.
·        Never leave the fire unattended.
·        Clear the area around the site for a minimum of ten feet.
·        Burn at a safe distance (25' or more) from your home, shed or other structures.
·        Never use gasoline! Gasoline fumes can ignite and cause serious injury and possible death.
·        Check your local and state regulations before burning.
Hazardous items are never allowed to be burned.  Proper disposal of hazardous items such as tires, plastics, aerosol cans, oil, etc., can be disposed of through means provided by your local government.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal, Brian S. Geraci states, "Marylanders need to use caution when burning outdoors.  The expense associated with extinguishment of out of control fires can be easily controlled by being attentive and following established guidelines provided by local authorities."
The MDE open burning ban is in effect annually between June 1 and September 1. This burn ban involves the following counties: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's and Baltimore City.  The ban does not affect backyard barbeque grilling or open fires for recreational purposes, such as campfires.  For more information on the burn ban contact Maryland Department of the Environment Office of Air Quality at (410) 537-3231 or go online at:
Open Air Burning regulations are enforced by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.  Violations carry fines up to $1000 and/or one year in prison.  The landowner can be charged with all of the costs associated with extinguishing the fire.  Even small campfires can cause wildfires if they are not fully extinguished.  Soak the coals with lots of water and make sure they are out cold!

Traffic Stop east of Woodside Nets Heroin

Posted: 24 May 2016 10:01 AM PDT

Woodside – The Delaware State Police have arrested two people after a traffic stop leads to heroin possession.

The incident occurred Monday May 23, 2016 around 9:30 p.m. as a trooper on patrol in the area of Woodside East observed a teal Ford Ranger fail to signal its intentions before turning northbound onto Peachtree Run from westbound Millchop Lane. A traffic stop was conducted on the truck and contact was made with the operator, identified as Robert E. Farkas, 35 of Dover, and a front seat passenger,Matthew R. Kerr, 24 of Dover. When the trooper conducted a computer inquiry into Farkas' driver's license, it was determined he was driving suspended and had two capiases out of Kent County courts. As Farkas was informed to exit the vehicle, Matthew Kerr exited the driver's side and began to flee on foot. He was apprehended shortly thereafter without further incident by another trooper that arrived to assist with the traffic stop. Artist Patrick Henry Reflects On 50-Year Career Of Eastern Shore Painting

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:53 AM PDT

BERLIN — After 50 years of being one of the most respected and sought after artists on the shore, Patrick Henry says people still ask him when he's going to get a "real job."

It's one of the many things these days that makes him flash that country mile-long smile that is as synonymous with his name as his striking paintings of some of the region's most aesthetically pleasing places and things are.

"I guess some people just don't get what it is that I do, and they wonder how I could possibly survive doing it for as long as I have here on the shore," he said with a slight-chuckle. "Sometimes I wonder how it all happened too."

Patrick Henry is a humble, God-fearing man. So much so, when he paints he listens to the Bible on CD. "Some days I listen to smooth jazz," said Henry, "but listening to the Bible helps me keep out the negative energy that can get in the way of my work."

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe under federal investigation for campaign contributions

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:37 AM PDT

Washington (CNN)Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department's public integrity unit, U.S. officials briefed on the probe say.

The investigation dates to at least last year and has focused, at least in part, on whether donations to his gubernatorial campaign violated the law, the officials said.

McAuliffe wasn't notified by investigators that he is a target of the probe, according to the officials.

"The Governor will certainly cooperate with the government if he is contacted about it," said Marc Elias, attorney for McAuliffe campaign, in a statement to CNN.

As part of the probe, the officials said, investigators have scrutinized McAuliffe's time as a board member of the Clinton Global Initiative, a vehicle of the charitable foundation set up by former President Bill Clinton.

AAA Study Finds No Scientific Basis for Drugged Driving Laws Based on THC Levels

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:30 AM PDT

The American Automobile Association recommends states abandon such laws in favor of testing for actual impairment.

Legal blood limits for marijuana are not an accurate way to measure whether someone was driving while impaired, and can lead to unsafe drivers going free while others are wrongfully convicted, according to a new study.

The study released Tuesday by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that drivers can have a low level of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, in their blood and be unsafe behind the wheel, while others with relatively high levels may not be a hazard.

Marijuana is not metabolized in the system in the same way as alcohol. So while a person with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher is considered too drunk to drive, it's not possible to say the same thing absent other evidence about a person testing at 5 nanograms per milliliter of blood of THC — the level used to find impairment by Colorado, Montana and Washington, the study found.

Medical experts warn of ‘dormant butt syndrome’

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:23 AM PDT

(NEW YORK) — There's yet another reason to get up off of that couch.

Ohio State University researchers are warning of a new ailment they call "Dormant Butt Syndrome."

"It basically refers to the gluteus-maximus — or the glute muscles — just not functioning as efficiently as they should," says Dr. Chris Kolba, a physical therapist at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center.

Kolba says the muscles in your behind are meant to support the rest of you and be a shock absorber. But when those muscles are too weak, the rest of your body tries to pick up the slack, which can cause back, hip and even knee pain.

Illinois High School Refuses to Let Marine Walk for Graduation In Uniform

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:15 AM PDT

An Illinois high school has come under fire after officials refused to let a graduate, who is also a U.S. Marine, walk across the stage Thursday in her blues.

Marine Corps Pvt. Megan Howerton technically finished up her studies at McHenry West High School early in order to start her career as a Marine, WLS-TV reported. But when she returned to the school to join her classmates at graduation, she wasn't allowed to walk with her class.

"Megan has always been very determined to do what's right, and I think she felt that the military was a calling for her," Grace Rodriguez, McHenry West graduate, told WLS-TV.

The school said its decision to refuse Howerton to walk for graduation because she wore her blues instead of the traditional cap and gown.

"The district and administration in no way looked to prevent the participation of this graduate or any graduate who has chosen to serve our nation," the school said in a statement. "Rather, the administration communicated in advance via letter, senior meeting, and practice, all the protocols expected of graduates, including attire. In some past cases, active-duty students elected to wear their gowns over top of their military uniforms, with their military hats, which was allowed.

Dick Morris: Bill Clinton Wrong on Poland and Hungary

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:00 AM PDT

Former president Bill Clinton's outrageous statement that Poland and Hungary have decided that democracy "is too much trouble" and want to embrace "authoritarian" and "Putin-style leadership" to keep the "foreigners out," is totally inaccurate and reflects a European Union-centric view of the Continent that is, itself, inimical to democracy.

The truth is that both of these nations are vibrant multi-party democracies that value, above all, their freedom and their right to vote. The peoples of both countries have suffered mightily losing vast proportions of their population in wars to become free. Excluding Jews sent to the camps, Poland lost 2.7 million of its citizens in World War II. Hungary suffered 3,000 deaths in its 1956 revolution and 200,000 of its people fled the country, a considerable sacrifice for freedom that Bill Clinton should not have minimized.

To say that they find democracy "too much trouble" belies their regular schedule of free, contested, high turnout elections that often result in peaceful and orderly changes in government.

What Poland and Hungary do want – and Hillary and Bill are about to find out that Americans do to – is to control Muslim in-migration so that the problems of terrorism, crime, and the infiltration of Sharia Law do not come to haunt their two nations as they now do the rest of Western Europe.

The World's Largest Solar Plant just Torched Itself

Posted: 24 May 2016 08:30 AM PDT

Misaligned mirrors are being blamed for a fire that broke out yesterday at the world's largest solar power plant, leaving the high-tech facility crippled for the time being. It sounds like the plant's workers suffered through a real hellscape, too.

A small fire was reported yesterday morning at the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (ISEGS) in California, forcing a temporary shutdown of the facility. It's now running at a third of its capacity (a second tower is down due to scheduled maintenance), and it's not immediately clear when the damaged tower will restart. It's also unclear how the incident will impact California's electricity supply.

Putting out the blaze was not easy task, either. Firefighters were forced to climb 300 feet up a boiler tower to get to the scene. Officials said the fire was located about two-thirds up the tower. Workers at the plant actually managed to subdue the flames by the time firefighters reached the spot, and it was officially extinguished about 20 minutes after it started.

Located on 4,000 acres of public land in the Mojave Desert, the sprawling concentrated solar thermal plant is equipped with 173,500 heliostats—each with two mirrors—that focus sunlight on boilers located on top of three 459-foot towers. The tremendous heat created by the concentrated solar power produces steam that drives turbines to produce electricity. The plant, the largest of its kind in the world, features a gross capacity of 392 megawatts, enough to power 140,000 homes. Each of the computer-controlled solar-reflecting mirrors is about the size of a garage door.

White House Watch: Trump 42%, Clinton 37%

Posted: 24 May 2016 07:30 AM PDT

Donald Trump has now grown his lead over Hillary Clinton in Rasmussen Reports' first weekly White House Watch survey.

Trump earns 42% support to Clinton's 37% when Likely U.S. Voters are asked whom they would vote for if the presidential election were held today. But Rasmussen Reports' latest national telephone survey finds that 13% prefer some other candidate, while seven percent (7%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

At the beginning of this month, Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, posted a statistically insignificant 41% to 39% lead over Clinton who is still expected to win the Democratic presidential nomination. Fifteen percent (15%) favored someone else, and five percent (5%) were undecided.

Rasmussen Reports will update the Clinton-Trump White House Watch matchup numbers every Thursday morning from now until Election Day in November.

RACIAL HOAXES: WHO'S REALLY THE VICTIM?

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:53 AM PDT

The racial victimhood racket has taken off.

Marcus Owens, a black 19-year-old University of Iowa student, posted a picture of his bruised face and chipped tooth, claiming he was violently attacked by a group of whites for no reason.

The story went viral. Predictably, black students protested, demanding "justice" and an end to "racism." They called out the University of Iowa (even though the incident occurred off campus). Law enforcement launched a major investigation. The media descended on Iowa City to get to the bottom of this awful "hate crime."

Everything unraveled when surveillance video of the altercation revealed the truth.

The video showed that the black "victim" was actually the aggressor – shoving and punching people outside a bar. Owens instigated a brawl that left him bloody. But he lied so he wouldn't get in trouble. He claimed whites hurled racial epithets and attacked him for being black.

Google Patent Glues Pedestrians to Self-Driving Cars

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:45 AM PDT

Google on Thursday had a fresh US patent for a sticky coating that could be applied to self-driving cars so pedestrians stick instead of bouncing off when hit.

The patent describes a layer of adhesive on a car's hood, front bumper and possibly front side panels sealed with a coating that, when broken, would bare a gluey surface akin to fly paper modified to catch humans.

"Upon impact with a pedestrian, the coating is broken exposing the adhesive layer," read patent paperwork dated May 17 and listing the applicant as Google.

"The adhesive bonds the pedestrian to the vehicle so that the pedestrian remains with the vehicle until it stops, and is not thrown from the vehicle, thereby preventing a secondary impact between the pedestrian and the road surface or other object."

Google reasoned in the patent application that pedestrians hit by cars typically suffer further injury by being knocked or hurled to the pavement or other objects.

Four Refugees With Infectious Tuberculosis Sent to Indiana in 2015

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:30 AM PDT

Four refugees sent to Indiana by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement in 2015 were diagnosed with active tuberculosis once they arrived in the Hoosier State, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

Active tuberculosis (TB) is infectious, while so-called "latent TB" is not infectious. But 10 percent of those infected with latent TB develop active infectious TB.

In 2015, almost 400 migrants with latent TB settled in Indiana, according to state records. The state's TB rate had declined for the 54 years up to 2010, but it now increasing as more migrants settle in the state.

"Tuberculosis is one of the most lethal infectious diseases in history," Dr. Jane Orient, executive director of the Association of American Physicians and surgeons, told Breitbart News last week. "It is easily transmitted, say on a public bus [and] increasingly, it is becoming highly resistant to all our antibiotics," she said.

The disease is airborne and is "caused by a group of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. General symptoms may include a prolonged, productive cough, blood-tinged sputum, night sweats, fever, fatigue, and weight loss," the Indiana Department of Health reports.

It is unclear whether these four refugees had infectious active TB prior to their arrival. Under federal rules, would-be migrants are screened by the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Alternatively, the migrants may have been accepted with latent TB that became active in the 30 to 90 days between their health screening in Indiana.

VA secretary: Disney doesn't measure wait times, so why should VA?

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:23 AM PDT

Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald on Monday compared the length of time veterans wait to receive health care at the VA to the length of time people wait for rides at Disneyland, and said his agency shouldn't use wait times as a measure of success because Disney doesn't either.

"When you got to Disney, do they measure the number of hours you wait in line? Or what's important? What's important is, what's your satisfaction with the experience?" McDonald said Monday during a Christian Science Monitor breakfast with reporters. "And what I would like to move to, eventually, is that kind of measure."

McDonald's comments angered House Speaker Paul Ryan, who tweeted out Monday afternoon, "This is not make-believe, Mr. Secretary. Veterans have died waiting in those lines."

Hungary Border Fence Success, Balkans Route Down To ‘A Trickle’

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:15 AM PDT

The controversial fence on Hungary's southern border with the Balkans may well have helped slow down the flow of migrants into northern Europe from the record highs reached last year.

But a visit to a newly-opened camp on Hungary's western border with Austria showed a small but steady trickle of them are still passing through the country on their way north.

And while locals want the camp closed, it is helping to keep the issue in the public eye as Prime Minister Viktor Orban prepares a referendum in which he will ask voters to reject an EU plan to re-distribute migrants across the continent.

The tent camp in Kormend, just 2 km (one mile) from the Austrian border, was opened on May 2 and is a so-called "open-gate" centre allowing its 165 inhabitants to go freely in and out. Those interviewed by Reuters made no bones of how they got there, and where they plan to head next.

"I want to go to Germany," said Sahed, 18, from Afghanistan, adding he would take the train back to the capital Budapest and from there offer a driver 300 euros to get him to his hoped-for destination.

School District to Stop Naming Valedictorians Due to 'Unhealthy' Competition

Posted: 24 May 2016 06:07 AM PDT

High school valedictorians are on the verge of becoming a thing of the past in Wake County as school leaders cut down on what they call unhealthy competition among top-achieving students.

The Wake County school board unanimously gave initial approval Tuesday to a policy that would bar high school principals from naming valedictorians and salutatorians – titles which go to the two seniors with the highest grade-point averages – after 2018. Starting in 2019, high schools would begin using a new system that recognizes seniors with Latin titles such as cum laude if they have a weighted GPA of at least 3.75.

School board members said the change will allow students to take more of the courses they'd like rather than just the ones that will boost their GPA and class rank.

"We have heard from many, many schools that the competition has become very unhealthy," school board Chairman Tom Benton said in an interview. "Students were not collaborating with each other the way that we would like them to. Their choice of courses was being guided by their GPA and not their future education plans."

A Viewer Writes: Wicomico County Partnership With Under Armour

Posted: 24 May 2016 05:45 AM PDT

Just read on the daily disappointment or daily times about the board of education making an uneducated partnership with under armour for ALL of the county schools athletics. (feel free to use)

First when does a county dictate a uniform brand to every school? What if a school wants nike or warrior etc.?

Anyway the county made a deal with a sporting goods dealer to sell under armour into the schools. The Sporting goods dealer and their owner was convicted of embezzlement and price fixing of athletic bids down in Virginia a few years ago.

The owner price fixed school bids in order to win sports uniform businesses and got caught by the feds. There was a lot of radio, internet and newspaper coverage of the embezzling and how they made fake bids and over charged schools for additional fake charges to iron on numbers on jersey's and passed the charges onto unsuspecting parents.

I know you have juice and reach to people and like to uncover how government make bad deals with crooks. This is one. Roll with it if you want, I'm sure someone will bring it up eventually once a school or a coach actually does a background check on who the school board is doing business with good or bad.

Boxing Champ Who Lived In 13 Foster Homes Says Flawed System Needs Work

Posted: 24 May 2016 05:30 AM PDT

Lisa P. Cohen entered the world of professional boxing at the relatively late age of 29, eventually bobbing, weaving and pounding her way to an IFBA Junior Featherweight World Title.

But Cohen engaged in even greater battles long before she donned boxing gloves. She grew up a ward of the court, living in 13 foster homes where she often witnessed or experienced abuse and neglect.

"For many years I tried to avoid even thinking about my past," says Cohen, author of the memoir "Being Too Fierce: One Woman's Incredible Journey from Foster Child to World Championship Boxer" (www.beingtoofierce.com).

"I marched forward trying my best to become a completely different person and chose not to feel sorry for myself."

Now, though, she talks openly about her foster-care experiences, sharing her story to inspire today's foster children and doing what she can to correct the flaws she sees in the system.

It's a system that can leave bitter memories for children who live in a series of temporary homes, and rarely feel they truly belong.

"I knew that no matter how big or fancy the house we lived in was, we were still the same old malnourished, Medicaid card-toting, free lunch-eating, hand-me-down-wearing foster children we had always been," Cohen writes in her book.

May is National Foster Care Month, but Cohen says any time is the right time to make improvements that will ensure a better life for the more than 400,000 American children in foster care.

Some fixes could require major policy changes. But Cohen says foster parents can improve the children's lives in small ways right now.

Among her recommendations:

• Understand that trash bags are not luggage. Foster children often are shuttled from one foster home to another. When those moves take place, the children usually don't pack their belongings in a suitcase. Instead, they are given a trash bag. "They deserve better than that," Cohen says. "Please don't put their clothes in a trash bag."
• Learn the "love language" each child needs. Some children want and need "tough-love" talk. Some want to be spoken to in a more gentle way. "You have to learn the child's love language," Cohen says. "You have to connect to them individually."
• Take photographs the children can keep. One of the sad realities is that many foster children grow up with little to no photographic record of their childhood. In most cases, they don't even get the school pictures that are the norm for other children. Once after Cohen grew up she was going through her court file and stumbled upon a photograph of herself as a child. She kept the photo, one of a handful that recorded her childhood.

"One reason I like to share my story with foster children is that I want them to see that I am them and they are me," Cohen says. "They are champions, too. They just don't know it yet."

BROUGHT DOWN BY EXPLOSION? Official: Human remains suggest blast most likely caused EgyptAir crash

Posted: 24 May 2016 04:30 AM PDT

The condition of human remains recovered from the crash site of EgyptAir Flight 804 suggests an explosion brought the plane down, a senior Egyptian forensic official told the Associated Press on Tuesday.

The official, who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity, claimed to have personally examined the remains of some of the plane's 66 passengers and crew at a Cairo morgue. He said that all 80 pieces brought to Cairo so far are small and that "there isn't even a whole body part, like an arm or a head."

The official added that "the logical explanation is that it was an explosion", but "I cannot say what caused the blast."

Loony Liberal News Man's Anti Gun Rant

Posted: 24 May 2016 04:00 AM PDT

Tom Brokaw has lost his marbles:

It's graduation season and thanks to universities' overwhelmingly tendency to choose liberal speakers over conservatives, college students are being fed a bunch of nonsense right before they enter the real world. The latest case in point: the University of Mississippi had the honor of having NBC's Tom Brokaw lecture them on guns during last weekend's commencement.

"I'm appalled by the determination of organizations and individuals to arm more people without any appreciation of the consequence of evermore lethal weapons in our midst," he said. "More guns and more firearm tolerance will mean more homegrown acts of terror."

"Yes, we have a constitutional right to own guns … but with that right comes a personal obligation to be on guard against the promiscuous use of guns (and) not to pretend that no limits means no trouble," he said.

Brokaw's sentiments - that people should understand that gun ownership is a serious responsibility- are shared by nearly every gun owner. There's absolutely no one in America who believes that gun ownership is for reckless yahoos. But like every ant-gun liberal, Brokaw's anti-gun views are completely divorced from objective reality. He talks like someone who hasn't spent five minutes around a gun or a gun owner. The mission of the National Rifle Association, and organizations like it, is to promote responsible and intelligent gun ownership. Moreover, their high effectiveness as a lobbying organization is due in large part to millions of ordinary Americans understanding and appreciating the richness of firearms culture and the importance of self defense.

The Left Told Us This Was a Racist Crisis

Posted: 24 May 2016 03:00 AM PDT

The economy is in the tank, America's enemies are on the march, and what are liberals worried about? The names of American football teams and the ability of perverts to access women's bathrooms where they can peep on children.

Americans care very much about the latter, but it turns out that no one cares at all about the former. As Fox News notes:

A recent national poll found that nine of 10 Native Americans aren't offended by the Washington Redskins name.

The poll conducted by the Washington Post indicated more than eight in 10 said they wouldn't be offended if someone who was not a Native American called them that name.

A federal judge ordered the cancellation of the Washington Redskins' trademark registration in July, ruling that their name may be disparaging to Native Americans. The club is appealing.

Ninety percent of the random national sample of 504 Native Americans said the name doesn't bother them; 9 percent said it was offensive. Native Americans make up about 2 percent of the U.S. population.

Of course Native Americans are indifferent. They, like millions of other Americans, have many other things to worry about. While the country has completely declined both culturally and economically, the Obama administration and the Trust Fund Liberal nothingburgers that back it have forged ahead, using the force of government to promote its wild left-wing agenda. If it turns out that a majority of Americans are totally put off by that, or apathetic, then the Democratic Party is in trouble. If America can come out of the next few months with our morals intact, and avoid electing Hillary Clinton, we may be ok,.

This Senator is Fighting for Vet's Right to Bear Arms

Posted: 24 May 2016 02:00 AM PDT

Barack Obama is trying to steal guns from veterans. One senator is not going to let that happen:

The avid proponent of American liberty and individualism, Sen. Rand Paul took the stage at the NRA-ILA forum and spoke of our natural right to own and bear arms.

"We must always remember that the Second Amendment can only properly be defended when we defend the rest of the bill of rights. You can't defend the second Amendment unless you defend the First amendment," Paul said.

He went on to warn the audience of the trampling of the Fourth Amendment and how important it is for governing bodies to acquire search warrants before investigating individual citizens.

He also mentioned new legislation that proposes veteran's with PTSD not be allowed to own firearms.

"I'll be damned before I let the government take guns from the veterans who fought to preserve this country," he said. "I will do whatever necessary to defend our god-given rights."

Paul ended his speech with a quote from Thomas Jefferson.

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."

Americans should feel fortunate that at least one member of the Senate has their best interests at heart. But this is only the beginning. If Republican voters don't turn out this election, Crooked Hillary will have her choice of radical anti-gun Supreme Court nominees.

Trump Hits Crooked Hillary's Hypocrisy on this Key Issue

Posted: 24 May 2016 12:00 AM PDT

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump says Hillary Clinton is hypocritical to call for gun-control reforms while having armed Secret Service protection.

"Crooked Hillary wants to get rid of all guns and yet she is surrounded by bodyguards who are fully armed. No more guns to protect Hillary!" Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

Trump's tweet came a day after he was endorsed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) at the gun group's annual convention.

Speaking to the NRA on Friday, Trump repeatedly railed against Clinton, calling her "the most anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment candidate ever to run for office."

Are We Fostering The Wrong Kind Of College Envy?

Posted: 23 May 2016 10:00 PM PDT

When it comes time to apply to colleges, we may not be serving our children well.

That's according to a growing chorus of voices who work with youth and their academic endeavors. For example, Malcolm Gladwell, one of the most recognizable public intellects, regularly asserts that brand prestige from an Ivy League name doesn't necessarily suit the needs of individual students.

Jeffrey Leiken, CEO of Evolution Mentoring International, agrees. He provides mentoring for teens and young adults, going beyond the typical work of a therapist by building a relationship so that they come to see Leiken as a trusted confidant who answers their late-night text messages and isn't quick to label them.

"We continue to be obsessed with being associated with the top 1 percent of anything, whether it's wealth, looks, social media followers or achieving that Ivy League status," says Leiken, author of "Adolescence is Not a Disease: Beyond Drinking, Drugs and Dangerous Friends – The Journey to Adulthood" (www.Leiken.com).

"Far more important is not the school's brand and our cultural obsession with it. Rather, it's helping to ensure that every student who attendsany school gets closer to reaching their potential."

What criteria should students and parents look for when determining where to apply for college? Leiken offers some crucial guidelines to keep in mind.

• Seek a college with programs that may help with lifelong skills. Self-awareness, self-leadership, self-actualization – those qualities are often overlooked when considering higher education. Learning the tangible skills for a future job is important. However, those requirements change over time. Coursework, professors and other programs that speak to a student's ethical intuition, however, make up the educational gold that is enduring.
• Look beyond the typical menu of schools. There is a common denominator among millions of 17-year-olds: an anxious balance between their "reach" schools and their "safety" schools. It turns out that many college counselors guide these kids to a similar list of "reach" and "safety" schools – about 50 of them. Between public and private institutions, there are thousands of other schools to choose from!
• Ask yourself, "Where will I flourish?" Learn more about the culture of these institutions. There are two distinct stages for young adults in college life: the time where students adjust to a new environment and, later, when students realize they are becoming independent adults. A name-brand school isn't necessarily the best place for millions of kids to best reach maturity.

"Just as we don't all wear the same size clothing," Leiken says, "the intellectual development of young adults doesn't always fit into the same small box of name-brand schools."
