Posted: 02 May 2016 09:00 PM PDT President Barack Obama announced new steps Friday to help curb gun violence, including by identifying the requirements that "smart guns" would have to meet for law enforcement agencies to buy and use them as well as sharing mental health records with the federal background check system. As Obama unveiled a plan last January to expand federal background checks for gun purchases, he directed the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Justice to conduct or sponsor research into smart-gun technology. Obama also instructed the agencies to regularly review the availability of such technology and to promote its use. In a report released Friday, the Justice and Homeland Security departments said they expect to complete the work of identifying the smart-gun requirements by October. "Many gun injuries and deaths are the result of legal guns that were stolen, misused, or discharged accidentally," Obama said. "As long as we've got the technology to prevent a criminal from stealing and using your smartphone, then we should be able to prevent the wrong person from pulling a trigger on a gun." This State is Giving Health Insurance To Illegals Posted: 02 May 2016 07:00 PM PDT In an unprecedented move, California legislators look to extend Obamacare health coverage to the state's estimated 2.6 million illegal immigrant population. If passed and signed into law, California would be the first state in the nation to request illegal immigrants be covered through a state exchange, the Los Angeles Times reported. It is against the law for California to allow illegal immigrants to enroll in Covered California, the state's Obamacare health insurance exchange, Sally C. Pipes, president and CEO of the pro-free-market Pacific Research Institute, told The Daily Signal in an emailed response. "The law does not allow illegals to enroll in the state exchanges or the federal exchange Healthcare.gov," Pipes said. Fired Muslim Workers Claim Discrimination at Plant in Owatonna Posted: 02 May 2016 06:30 PM PDT Nearly two dozen Muslim Somali-Americans are filing discrimination charges with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity against hardware maker AmesburyTruth and Doherty Staffing Solutions. The fired workers said they were denied a place to pray at an Owatonna, Minn., manufacturing plant and lost their jobs for trying to practice their religion. The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is leading the effort on behalf of 21 former workers who were terminated in May and June 2015. The employees were told that if they could not comply with the plant's break schedule or could not wait until their shifts were over to pray, they could not continue working, according to the council, which goes by the acronym CAIR-MN and is a member of the nation's largest Islamic civil liberties advocacy group. A number of workers were told to go home and wait for the company to make accommodations but were never called back to work, according to CAIR-MN. Some employees were fired for "violating the bathroom policy" by spilling water on the floor. Followers of Islam pray five times each day — at daybreak, midday, afternoon, sunset and at night. Before prayer, Muslims are required to wash their faces, hands and feet with clean water, which normally is performed in a restroom sink. The Reconquista Movement: Mexico’s Plan for the American Southwest Posted: 02 May 2016 06:00 PM PDT "Todos los Europeos son Illegals desde 1492" (All Europeans Illegal since 1492) —Handwritten sign carried by a street demonstrator, New York City, La Marcha, April 10, 2006 On January 7, 2006, the Minuteman Project held a National Day Laborer Site protest. Often, a day labor site is nothing more than a parking lot outside a building-materials store where the owner sees a business advantage to allowing illegal alien day laborers to stand around and wait for job offers. At the day labor site in Rancho Cucamonga, the Minuteman Project videotaped an angry Mexican who came out into the street to shout insults. "Go back to Germany where you belong!" he shouted. "Stay in Germany! Get out of here!" Then, pointing demonstrably to the ground with his right index finger, he screamed, "This is Mexico! This is our land! Get out of here, racist pigs! Viva Saddam Hussein! Viva Cuba!" Clearly, the illegal immigrants at the day labor center didn't want to be identified, since they were planning to take jobs at below-minimum wages and not pay taxes. Yet, the claim that California is actually Mexico was not made lightly. For millions of Hispanics in the Unites States, and for millions more in Mexico, the assertion is made in deadly seriousness. The Reconquista Movement Takes Hold At its core, the claim of the Reconquista ("Reconquest") movement is that the United States stole large sections of the southwestern United States from Mexico in the 1800s. Mexicans and other Hispanics making these claims seek to reconquer this territory by taking the land away from the United States and returning it to Mexico. The goal of the Reconquista is to "reconquer" these "lost" or "stolen" territories for "La Raza"—the race indigenous to Mexico. How will the Reconquista be accomplished?
US Weighing Under-the-Radar Routes for Syrian Refugees Posted: 02 May 2016 05:30 PM PDT The Obama administration appears to be bowing to international pressure and pursuing under-the-radar "alternative" ways to bring in more Syrian and other refugees -- as soon as this year. The latest indication that the administration is preparing to take in more than the 10,000 Syrians this year it already has committed to follows a March 30 "high-level meeting" on Syrian refugee admission in Geneva, Switzerland -- convened by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. At the meeting, attended by State Department officials, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi called for countries to pursue "alternative avenues" for refugees – such as student and work visas, and expanded family reunification programs. "These pathways can take many forms: not only resettlement, but also more flexible mechanisms for family reunification, including extended family members, [labor] mobility schemes, student visa and scholarships, as well as visa for medical reasons," Grandi said. This followed an adviser suggesting the U.S. ask universities to offer scholarships to Syrian students, and help Syrian-Americans bring in their extended families outside the "time-consuming" refugee resettlement process. The State Department immediately issued a media note reaffirming the "commitment to resettle at least 10,000 Syrians in FY 2016 and increase the total number of resettled refugees from around the world to 100,000 by the end of FY 2017." Nayla Rush, senior researcher at the Center for Immigration Studies, said she thinks the administration is "100 percent" behind the idea. "My fear is they aren't really going to let anyone know about it," Rush said. More here [Additional info from U.S. Dept. of State Refugee Reception and Placement Program : The Department of State's Reception and Placement program provides assistance for refugees to settle in the United States. It supplies resettlement agencies a one-time sum per refugee to assist with meeting expenses during a refugee's first few months in the United States. Most of these funds go toward the refugees' rent, furnishings, food, and clothing, as well as to pay the costs of agency staff salaries, office space, and other resettlement-related expenses that are not donated or provided by volunteers. Though the Department of State's Reception and Placement program is limited to the first three months after arrival, the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement works through the states and other nongovernmental organizations to provide longer-term cash and medical assistance, as well as language, employment, and social services. Refugees receive employment authorization upon arrival and are encouraged to become employed as soon as possible... After one year, refugees are required to apply for permanent residence (commonly referred to as a green card) and after five years in the United States, a refugee is eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship. ]

Re-sharing on Social Media Could Be Making You More Stupid Posted: 02 May 2016 05:00 PM PDT Re-posting messages on social media makes people stupid, a new study suggests. Researchers from Cornell and Beijing universities found that the simple act of "re-tweeting" interfered with people's understanding of the contents of the message. Professor Qi Wang, a human development expert at Cornell in the US, said: "Most people don't post original ideas any more. You just share what you read with your friends. "But they don't realize that sharing has a downside. It may interfere with other things we do." Two groups of Chinese students were shown a series of messages on Weibo, a Twitter-like social media platform in China. One group was then given the choice whether to re-post the message or move on to the next one. The other group were not able to re-tweet. The students were then tested about the contents of the messages. Subject: Illegal Immigrant Criminals Released Into U.S. Despite Thousands of Vacant Detention Beds Posted: 02 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT Homeland Security is leaving thousands of detention beds empty even as it voluntarily releases thousands of murderers, kidnappers and other criminals, the chief of deportations admitted to Congress on Thursday as she faced families of those killed by freed illegal immigrant convicts. "We strive for perfect, but we are human and we fall short sometimes," Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Sarah R. Saldana told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Ms. Saldana said the agency now has 2,000 beds vacant out of the 34,000 it is supposed to have available on the average day. Government statistics show that in 2015, ICE averaged 28,168 detainees — meaning some 5,800 beds left unused, even as the agency released dangerous convicts back into the community to await the outcomes of their immigration proceedings. One of those people released last year was Jean Jacques, a Haitian who served time for attempted murder and whom ICE tried to deport, but whom Haiti refused to take back. ICE released him, and he would go on to stab a young woman, Casey Chadwick, in her Connecticut apartment. "If ICE and Homeland Security had done their job, Casey would not have died," her mother, Wendy Hartling, told lawmakers just minutes after Ms. Saldana testified. New Jersey Withdraws from Federal Refugee Resettlement Program Posted: 02 May 2016 04:00 PM PDT Gov. Chris Christie has withdrawn the state of New Jersey from participation in the U.S. Refugee Resettlement program, and Obama administration officials are working quickly to claim the federal government can continue to resettle refugees in the Garden State. "Federal officials held a conference call Friday morning [April 22] with representatives of nonprofit groups who help refugees resettle in New Jersey, a process that will no longer have the participation of Gov. Chris Christie's administration," New Jersey 101.5 reported. Earlier this week, Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican, announced that Kansas was also withdrawing from the U.S. Refugee Resettlement program. The decisions by New Jersey and Kansas now bring the total of states who have withdrawn from the U.S. Refugee Resettlement program to fourteen. The federal government currently operates the refugee resettlement program in twelve of those states through VOLAGs (voluntary agencies) under Department of Health and Human Services regulations that created the "Wilson-Fish alternative program." Recently, the statutory authority of those regulations has come under question. Obscure Delaware Program Is A Public Housing Miracle Posted: 02 May 2016 03:30 PM PDT More than 850 families have transitioned out of public housing in Delaware since the state began limiting the length of time residents are eligible to receive housing subsidies, and hundreds more have become homeowners. "Before we started Moving to Work, we had people who were on their third or fourth generation of the same family who were at the same site," Rebecca Kauffman, social service senior administrator at the Delaware Housing Authority's Moving to Work program, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. The Delaware group is one of only 39 housing authorities out of more than 3,000 in the country that the federal government allows to have its own work requirements and residency time limits. The Moving to Work program was approved during the Clinton administration in 1996. "It was tough at the beginning because there was no time limit," Kauffman said. "People could come into public housing and stay forever." But the program has compiled an impressive record. More than 850 families have completed the program to enter assistance-free living, and 30 percent of program participants became homeowners when they left. Kauffman said she could probably count on one hand the number of people who ended the program facing possible homelessness. Trump Protester: Protesters Have ‘A Right’ To ‘Prevent’ Trump From Speaking Posted: 02 May 2016 03:00 PM PDT One of the protesters outside of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's speech in Burlingame, California stated that protesters "have a right" to express their "righteous rage" "in the way that they need to," and to prevent Trump from speaking while speaking to MSNBC on Friday. The protester said, "I don't think it is out of control. I think that what you're seeing people express righteous rage, at the fact that we've this hateful bigot coming to speak in our state, and they're saying, 'No absolutely not.'" She added, "We respect the diversity of tactics, right? We planned to lock down the streets and keep him out, and stop him from speaking." When asked what she meant by "diversity of tactics," Brooks stated, "We mean that black and brown and poor people have a righteous rage, and they have a right to express it in the way that they need to, and to prevent this man from speaking in our state." US Dept. of Justice Investigating Dole After Deadly Listeria Outbreak Posted: 02 May 2016 02:30 PM PDT Dole Food Company Inc on Friday said the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating a deadly Listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to packaged salad products from its processing plant in Springfield, Ohio. "Dole has recently been contacted by the Department of Justice in connection with its own investigation, and we will be similarly cooperating with the DOJ to answer questions and address any concerns," Dole said in a statement. Plant officials found evidence of Listeria contamination there as early as July 2014, Food Safety News (FSN) reported on Friday. A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection report obtained by FSN and reviewed by Reuters on Friday showed that Dole's tests of surfaces at the plant came back positive for Listeria on nine separate occasions in 2014 and 2015. Dole said in its statement that the report dealt with issues that had already been corrected. The report, dated Feb. 5, said the plant's third-party laboratory had notified Dole about positive Listeria test results from internal samples taken on Jan. 5 and 7. But it did not say whether testing was done to determine whether the bacteria posed a threat. Limbaugh: Indiana Key to Stopping Trump Posted: 02 May 2016 02:00 PM PDT Though I won't go so far as to say the Indiana primary is do or die for the Ted Cruz campaign, it couldn't be much more important. As events have unfolded, Indiana has a critical choice to make next Tuesday. It shouldn't surprise political observers that Donald Trump won decisively in New York and the other Northeastern states. I don't mean to disparage Republicans in that region, but they are more liberal than Republicans elsewhere in the United States, and Trump is far more acceptable to liberal Republicans than Cruz is, especially on social issues. But the race isn't over. Trump will still have great difficulty acquiring 1,237 delegates before the Republican National Convention. No, Cruz can't reach 1,237 before the convention, but he very well could reach that number if Trump doesn't, either, and the race goes to a second ballot. This is not to say that Trump doesn't have a strong advantage now or that the candidates' respective delegate counts are irrelevant going in to the Cleveland convention. The more Cruz can narrow the gap between now and Cleveland the greater his case for succeeding on subsequent ballots. In that sense, all the remaining states are pivotal, but Indiana perhaps more so because it is in the Midwest and is considered more conservative — and right now is up for grabs, according to polls. Though all primary and caucus voters have a grave responsibility, scorching heat is on Indiana Republicans. We mustn't forget that the Trump phenomenon was born from the gross excesses of the leftist Obama administration and the ineffectiveness of the GOP establishment to stop them. Regardless of the latter's insistence that it did everything it could to resist President Obama, the majority of Republicans, at least, don't buy it. Cruz Says Indiana Will Decide GOP Race Posted: 02 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT Texas Sen. Ted Cruz declared Friday that the 2016 race for the Republican presidential nomination will be decided next week in Indiana – making clear he's staking his underdog bid on a strong performance there. "It gives me great comfort that this primary is going to be decided by the Midwestern common sense of the Hoosier State," Cruz said during a one-hour Fox News-hosted town hall in downtown Indianapolis. Cruz, speaking with anchor Sean Hannity, did not say definitively whether he would drop out if he loses Indiana on Tuesday, but described the "heartland" state as critical. Cruz trails front-runner Donald Trump by hundreds of delegates. Currently, the delegate count has Trump leading with 994, Cruz in second with 566 and Ohio Gov. John Kasich in third with 153. Cruz, at this point, cannot reach the requisite 1,237 delegates to clinch the nomination before the July convention. But Cruz said, "Here's the simple reality – I believe nobody is going to get to 1,237." Cruz told the crowd Trump is one of the "greatest frauds in modern electoral history" and is "pretending to be an outsider." The EPA Stashes Billions In Slush Fund-Like Accounts Posted: 02 May 2016 01:00 PM PDT Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials have accumulated at least $6.3 billion in more than 1,300 obscure spending accounts akin to slush funds that are essentially beyond congressional, media and public scrutiny. The accounts – which were created through EPA's Superfund program – are not technically secret because the agency officially acknowledges their existence. But getting concrete details about deposits and expenditures is extremely difficult. The EPA deposited more than $6.3 billion into an estimated 1,308 special accounts between 1990 and 2015, according to the agency's website, and has spent more than half of the total. The agency doesn't publicly report individual special account balances or expenses. The "special accounts" are financed by legal settlements between the agency and parties responsible for polluting Superfund sites. Funds are deposited and spent without prior congressional approval. "This is the very definition of an out-of-control agency, if they can raise their own money and not have to go to Congress to have it appropriated," Myron Ebell, director of the Competitive Enterprise Institute's Center for Energy and Environment told TheDCNF. An EPA spokeswoman told TheDCNF the agency manages the accounts "in accordance with the law, congressional intent, and EPA policy and guidance." Dutch Noah’s Ark Replica Sailing to Brazil for Olympic Games Posted: 02 May 2016 12:00 PM PDT A Dutch Christian organization is planning to sail a "replica" of Noah's Ark to reach Brazil during the Summer Olympics and the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Longer than an official soccer field, the vessel was built following the biblical measurements given in Genesis 6:15, the director of the Ark of Noah Foundation, Herald A.M.A. Janssen, told ABC News. The voyage, which is still in its planning stages, intends to stop at multiple port cities in Brazil as well as Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia, before coming to the United States. "We are so pleased with the very warm support of the private community in Fortaleza, our first stop in Brazil after crossing the Atlantic Ocean," Janssen said. "The target is to reach Fortaleza in July, and reach the Paralympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro by Sept. 7." Posted: 02 May 2016 11:30 AM PDT New emails recently obtained by Judicial Watch show a coordinated effort that goes all the way up the chain of command to the White House. The plan? To deliberately mislead the American public about the reasons for the Benghazi attacks in an effort to cover up for the total intelligence failure of the Obama administration, and especially Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. As Fox reports: Catherine Herridge reported some new developments in the investigation into the Sept. 2012Benghazi attack, including the release of documents that lead directly to the White House. Among the documents, obtained by Judicial Watch through a FOIA request, is an email from senior White House adviser Ben Rhodes to other top administration officials, including Press Secretary Jay Carney. Under the subject "prep call with Susan," Rhodes wrote that the goal for Rice's appearances on Sunday talk shows would be "to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure or policy." The message was sent three days after the attacks, which left four Americans dead at a U.S. consulate and nearby CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Days later, Rice would go on numerous Sunday news programs, including on Fox News Sunday, to falsely assert that the Benghazi attack was spontaneous and occurred during a protest over an anti-Islam video. Since that time, the White House has come under fierce criticism from Republicans, who allege that the administration altered the CIA's talking points about how the Benghazi attack unfolded. Are Bill Clinton and his Team the Key to the FBI’s Hillary Investigation? Posted: 02 May 2016 11:00 AM PDT Bill's aide may be the nexus between the Clintons' political and financial interests Several weeks ago, I wrote a column titled "Is Bill Clinton in the FBI crosshairs?" That question appears to be increasingly relevant because of the emergence of another, more central one: Was Hillary Clinton's unsecure, private email server set up by her husband's top political operative in order to turbocharge their own political and financial interests? Justin Cooper may hold the answer. Mr. Cooper is a central player in the shadowy worlds of Bill and Hillary Clinton — serving as Mr. Clinton's top aide since 2015, when his predecessor, former right-hand man and "surrogate son" Doug Band, resigned from the Clinton Foundation — yet he has largely escaped notice. The obscure Mr. Cooper may, in fact, be the linchpin of the case swirling around the Clintons. Perhaps more than anyone apart from the principals themselves, he is at the nexus of the Clinton Foundation, Hillary's work at the State Department, and her possession of highly sensitive government documents. After all, Mr. Cooper was the one who, before she became secretary, negotiated with the Obama White House over the parameters of acceptable conduct by Bill Clinton and the foundation to minimize the possibility of "conflicts of interest." I have previously reported that the server in question actually belonged to, was paid for and was housed by Mr. Clinton, raising questions about his possible legal exposure. Subject: Cuban-American: America Morphing Into Communist Country Posted: 02 May 2016 09:53 AM PDT Filmmaker and American citizen Agustin Blazquez never thought his native Cuba would become a communist country, but now he sees the same radical shift happening in America. In this exclusive video interview for The Daily Caller News Foundation, he says the left has been clever by using "very non-threatening words," like liberal, progressive and concerned citizens, for advancing government control of American lives. The truth about Cuban politics is hard to find because of media spin and propaganda dominating American discourse. For Blazquez, watching American youth embrace avowed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, strikes him as "absurd." It is the end result, he says, of the cultural marxist education and media propaganda that has anesthetized too many Americans who do not defend the values that made America exceptional. Watching President Barack Obama travel to Cuba, he says, made him "want to throw up." Monkey bars, swings blamed for rise in playground concussions Posted: 02 May 2016 09:45 AM PDT CHICAGO — Playground concussions are on the rise, according to a new government study, and monkey bars and swings are most often involved. Most injuries studied were mild, but all concussions are potentially serious, and the researchers say the trend raises public health and safety concerns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study examined national 2001-2013 data on playground injuries to children ages 14 and younger who received emergency-room treatment. Of almost 215,000 children on average treated yearly, almost 10 percent — about 21,000 annually — had traumatic brain injuries including concussions. Only nonfatal injuries were included. A Forgotten Tradition: May Basket Day Posted: 02 May 2016 09:15 AM PDT Maybe there really was a time when America was more innocent. Back when May Basket Day was a thing, perhaps. The curious custom — still practiced in discrete pockets of the country — went something like this: As the month of April rolled to an end, people would begin gathering flowers and candies and other goodies to put in May baskets to hang on the doors of friends, neighbors and loved ones on May 1. In some communities, hanging a May basket on someone's door was a chance to express romantic interest. If a basket-hanger was espied by the recipient, the recipient would give chase and try to steal a kiss from the basket-hanger. ILLEGAL ALIEN EMPLOYEE RAPES HOTEL GUEST, OFFERS HER $5 TO KEEP QUIET Posted: 02 May 2016 09:07 AM PDT SAINT PAUL, MN – A housekeeping employee is charged with raping a woman who was staying at a St. Paul motel this weekend with her 9-month-old baby. Nolasco Lopez Ramirez, 25, of St. Paul is head of housekeeping at the Days Inn at 1964 W. University Ave. and told other housekeepers he would clean the woman's room Saturday afternoon, according to charges filed Monday in Ramsey County District Court. The woman told investigators he trapped her in the bathroom and raped her when she went in to gather up some dirty towels. Ramirez was taken into custody and is charged withfirst-degree criminal sexual conduct. According to the criminal complaint, Ramirez came to the woman's door about 4:20 p.m. Saturday telling her he was there to check out the room. The woman said she propped open the door with her baby stroller and sat down to do some homework while Ramirez made the bed. Afterward he lingered in the room and at one point the woman told him to back up because he was making her uncomfortable. The woman then got up and went to the bathroom for the towels in an attempt to get Ramirez to leave, but he followed her in and closed the door behind him, according to the complaint. He kissed her and she pushed him away, telling him to stop. Then he grabbed her, turned her around, pulled down her pants and raped her, saying "I know you want it. Stop lying. Donald Trump's vice presidential pick is anyone's guess Posted: 02 May 2016 09:00 AM PDT Donald Trump's victories in a series of northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states over the past two weeks coupled with his lead on the eve of Tuesday's Indiana's primary have made one thing clear: He is the unquestioned favorite for the Republican presidential nomination. Which raises the question: Who is Trump going to pick as his vice presidential nominee? The short answer: No one knows. Trump relishes being unpredictable, so trying to game out how this most unconventional of politicians will make up his mind is a bit of a guessing game. Add to that the fact that Trump's inner circle remains, largely, devoid of establishment types, and you quickly get into a situation where the people talking don't know much and the people who do know aren't talking. Trump has been open about the lack of thought he has put into the process. "I just don't want to think about it right now," he said of the veepstakes following his five-state sweep six days ago. From Under the Water Tower To Under the Big Lights: The Story of Alex “Skitter” Ellis Posted: 02 May 2016 08:00 AM PDT If you walked into the town of Delmar Delaware on any fall Friday night, you might think it was a ghost town. Standing on the street you might hear a muffled roar coming from the high school stadium. When you found that stadium you would have looked up in the crowd and seen every single person dressed in blue and orange. The Delmar Wildcats are a beacon for the love the people have for their town and the pride they feel for where they live. The town of Delmar seems to have been plucked from the heart of Texas. In Delmar Delaware football is life. Looking back a few years in this tiny town of Delmar, one may have seen the stereotypical small town all-American quarterback Alex "Skitter" Ellis. Everything in his life seems to be going great. He has the perfect girlfriend, great friends, and popularity that can only come from being quarterback of the high school football team. The Delmar football team works hard and they win. They have the support of the town rallying behind them. Skitter Ellis seems to have the world at his finger tips. Little does he know the next five years will consist of a constant battle to achieve his goals. He has the ambition of a young boy with a big dream, a dream to play big time football. "I knew that it would take a lot of work to get on the field," he said, "especially coming from a walk on position." He has the desire to prove he has what it takes, not just in Delmar, but out in the big world, past the water tower. After graduating high school Ellis makes a decision for himself. He decides to attempt walking on the University of Tennessee football team, no easy feat for a kid out of Delmar Delaware. He will battle multiple injuries throughout his career. He will not even play a game until his fourth year in the Vols' program. His Junior year he would have to endure the pain of an injury and battle through mentally and physically to finish his season. His senior year is when he would find all of his hard work finally paying off. By the time it was all over Ellis would become an inspiration and finally achieve his dreams. Latest: Sick-out prompts 43 Detroit school closures Posted: 02 May 2016 07:45 AM PDT DETROIT — The Latest on Detroit Public Schools closures (all times local): 11:45 p.m. Detroit Public Schools says at least 43 schools will be closed Monday amid a sick-out by teachers. District spokeswoman Michelle Zdrodowski made the announcement late Sunday night. The Detroit Federation of Teachers earlier Sunday urged members to call in sick Monday. The union pointed to a weekend announcement that the district will have no money to continue paying teachers this summer without further funding from the state. In March, Gov. Rick Snyder signed into law emergency funding that is keeping DPS operating through the end of the school year as the state Legislature considers a $720 million restructuring plan. Sick-outs earlier this year caused tens of thousands of students to miss class. Former Delmar player signed with Titans Posted: 02 May 2016 07:30 AM PDT No Vols drafted, but three find teams after draft For the first time in the history of the NFL draft, the University of Tennessee has gone back-to-back years without at least one player taken. The 2015 draft was the first time since 1963 that the Vols did not have at least one player taken. The only other year since the draft's inception in 1936 that the Vols did not have a player taken was the 1938 draft. The drought extended on Saturday when the seven-round draft concluded without a UT player taken. Three players were known Saturday night to have signed free agent contracts. Wide receiver Marquez North and safety Brian Randolph both signed with the Los Angeles Rams, and linebacker/defensive end Curt Maggitt signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Could it be because we deliver news and information SEVEN days a week and we don't suck up to advertisers or community leaders/organizations? Last year Mr. Bassett received an award from our Delegates and Senators for, (get this) being in business for ONE YEAR. This is all OK Folks and allow me to explain why. I'd rather get an award from the Salvation Army because I/We served ringing the bell to help others. Are Ted Cruz delegates starting to freak? Posted: 02 May 2016 06:53 AM PDT After walking away with the majority of delegates in Wyoming and Colorado, Sen. Ted Cruz was on a roll. His knowledge of the "obscure, internecine" delegate fights gave him a tactical advantage over front-runner Donald Trump, which could end up deciding the Republican nomination for preside "This is how elections are won in America," said Cruz. The Texas senator saw a silver lining to his declining polls as he heads into Tuesday's critical Indiana primary. According to the National Review, "The political world was captivated – and Trump supporters were infuriated – by the Cruz campaign's successful effort to elect large blocs of friendly delegates at a series of state-party conventions." But then something unexpected happened. It seems delegates, like regular voters, are susceptible to public opinion … and public opinion was swaying toward Trump. The billionaire real-estate mogul trounced Cruz in Florida, Arizona, New Hampshire, and five northeastern states, which abruptly shifted the fickle political winds. "Mr. Cruz's support among the party's 2,472 convention delegates is softening," noted the New York Times, "threatening his hopes of preventing Mr. Trump's nomination by overtaking him in a floor fight." Logan, West Virginia: City Officials Say Bill and Hillary Are Simply Not Welcome In Their Town Posted: 02 May 2016 06:37 AM PDT After the Clinton campaign staff attempted to use the City of Logan Fire Department facilities for the Clinton upcoming visitations to the area, fire department officials contacted the Mayor of Logan about the situation. Logan officials then took matters into their own hands and sent an e-mail sent to Mike Browning, a representative for Senator Joe Manchin. The e-mail states the following: Mike, While we appreciate all that you and Senator Manchin's office have done for the City Of Logan over the years we must make the following statement: Bill and Hillary Clinton are simply not welcome in our town. Mrs. Clinton's anti-coal messages are the last thing our suffering town needs at this point. The policies that have been championed by people like Mrs. Clinton have all but devastated our fair town, and honestly, enough is enough. We wish them the best in their campaign, however we again state they are not welcome on our city properties. We hope that you will respectfully consider NOT visiting our community. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, 304-xxx-xxxx. I am writing this on behalf of the City Of Logan. PHOTOS: 33 Rescued Circus Lions Airlifted From Peru To South Africa Posted: 02 May 2016 06:30 AM PDT 33 lions have been rescued from circuses in South America and airlifted to a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa. The group that organized the operation, Animal Defenders International, is calling it the "largest airlift of lions in history," The Associated Press reports. The animals were rescued from circuses in Colombia and Peru after both countries passed new laws to ban the use of wild animals in circuses, according to ADI. The US-based group says 24 of the lions were rescued during surprise raids on Peruvian circuses, while nine were "voluntarily surrendered" by a Colombian circus. They were in bad shape: "Almost all of the rescued lions have been mutilated to remove their claws, one has lost an eye, another is almost blind, and many have smashed and broken teeth so would not survive in the wild." Gov. Larry Hogan says state saved Baltimore, quelled riots Posted: 02 May 2016 06:07 AM PDT ANNAPOLIS, Md. —Gov. Larry Hogan didn't hold back when he spoke out about the state's role in quelling last April's unrest in Baltimore. The governor said state resources saved the city by making quick and decisive decisions while the mayor sought political advice on how to handle the situation. The governor told the American Action Forum, a conservative forum in Washington, D.C., that Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake "hesitated" when he offered to send in the National Guard. "I called the mayor of Baltimore and said, 'We are ready to act and assist in any way possible,' and she said, 'We don't need your help. Everything is under control.' I said, 'It doesn't look like it's under control. It looks like the city is on fire,'" Hogan said. Hogan said he never expected the mayor to offer a thank you for sending state resources to quell the rioting, and he's certainly not still waiting for one. An audience member at the Q&A session asked Hogan how appreciative the mayor must be. "She hasn't expressed her gratitude, actually," Hogan said. The mayor's press office released a statement saying, "The mayor prefers to focus on governing the city rather than obsessing on perceived past slights or difference of opinion." Racist frat boy who 'put NOOSE on Ole Miss integration statue' as he faces 11-year prison sentence Posted: 02 May 2016 03:56 AM PDT The Justice Department has indicted a former Ole Miss student on civil rights charges after he allegedly hung a noose on a statue of his university's first black student. Graeme Phillip Harris, 20, of Alpharetta, Georgia, has been indicted on one count of conspiracy to violate civil rights and one count of using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students. The indictment is connected to a February 2014 incident in which a noose and a former Georgia flag, prominently featuring the Confederate battle emblem, were placed on a statue of James Meredith. Harris, who is white, was an Ole Miss student when the noose was left on the statue. It wasn't immediately clear whether Harris had an attorney to contact for comment on his behalf. University spokesman Danny Blanton said Friday that Harris is no longer enrolled and that university officials turned the case over to federal prosecutors and deferred to their judgment.. Harris has transferred to University of North Georgia – Oconee Campus, according to the Daily Mississippian. He is free on bond, though his movement is restricted to areas of Georgia and Mississippi.
