Is It Really About Bathrooms?

Posted: 22 May 2016 06:58 AM PDT

By Thornton Crowe

Over the last few months, the transgender bathroom situation has reached an all time level pitch. Why has this even become an issue considering the transgender population counts for about 3% of the overall generation?

It does make sense if you look at it within the grand scheme.

What a better way to your eyes off all the ways the government is really doing to usurp the Constitution everyday. They're working hard to endanger our Rights as guaranteed by the ruling document of our land. Furthermore, our legislators are perpetrating one of the biggest frauds in the history of mankind under the guise of 'clean, healthy living.'

Last week, California has practically dismantled it's citizens' rights to bear arms. Mind you, the law only serves to protect criminals as they will never go unarmed. Now, average citizens are denied the right to carry or even own them.

Another big California unconstitutional move was to give licenses and de facto voting rights to illegal aliens. Yes, Gov. Brown (D) made it possible for people to skirt the Constitution mandate that clearly states you need to be a US citizen in order to vote. He has given cart blanche to criminals entering illegally to obtain a valid driver's licenses. The off-shoot is they also get to vote in state and federal elections even though they are not eligible. There is no way to separate them or flags of their ineligibility to California Board of Elections.

Furthermore, just because California illegal aliens have driver's licenses, it by no means they will obey driving laws or car insurance. It's been a long-standing problem where illegals get away with denting innocent people's cars without having to make that victim whole. Much like driving around the diplomat circle in DC, they seldom are never held accountable to either law enforcement or the victims.

Why is this important to you?

Let's go back to 1998. Remember when a lot of people made a big deal about this smoking ban all public places -- both inside and outside -- in California and they said it was a violation of a person's right to choose whether or not to smoke even in outdoor spaces? The detractors were the minority and we all thought they were just being selfish jerks who wanted to make our kids sick. Remember?

The big smoking ban provided a massive slippery slope to the thought and behavior police who sought to eradicate personal rights under the guise of it being for the greater good. Using California as an example for seeing just how much they extort the public into compliance, the anti-smoking ban spread throughout America in record time. So what does this mean for Gun Control and Voting Eligibility? Well, unless the some brave Californian dares to step up and sue the state, it may continue to grow like a virus throughout America.

Which brings us back to transgender -- while we're boycotting Target and the mainstream media keeps our eyes on bathrooms, all this is going on behind the smoke and mirrors! Once again, like a petulant child testing his parents' resolve, government is testing just how much they can bully people into giving up more of their freedoms for a non-existent cause made into a mountain.

Perhaps it's time we as a nation come together and vote the nonsense out once and for all. Hence, stop voting for people based on the D or R behind their name and start voting for ourselves and our Constitution. Ideological Right and Left have become married in the establishment way. There really is no division when it comes to establishment folks as they both support the same PC-madness that is taking a wrecking ball to America and assaulting everything we used to hold dear in the American Dream.

Coming to Maryland...! Don't you think it's time we got back to some semblance of normalcy or has this loony liberal society become the new normal forever? The choice is up to you.

How say you?

Armchair Quarterbacks Never Win the Heisman Trophy

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

By Thornton Crowe

Two racial incidents caused a huge surge of concern in Salisbury over the last two weeks...

Once again, as predicted, the semester is now in it's exam phase, students will be leaving and Dr. Janet Dudley-Eschbach has skated through, unblemished. Unforgivably, she ignored your concerns here on Salisbury News as well as the potential escalation as a result of this race baiting tolerance policy the university has apparently adopted.

Yet, when I wrote an article about the local slumlords' financial abuse of SU students, one of her underlings wrote a long-winded apology, indicating she completely miss the article's point. With crickets over the recent incident, SU proved they're more worried about students making noise rather than any potential rise in white-black tensions in the community or on campus as a result of their mishandling.

In regards to PHS, reports indicate very few concerned parents bothered to attend last Monday's big PTA hoedown. Couldn't tear yourselves away from the idiot box long enough to voice your concern as a community over the violence in the high schools; however, you  vehemently complained about it here. Hint: The gratuitous three sheriffs seen at the school the following Monday cannot keep your kids safe when it involves a mob as seen on the posted video.

So your responses were just hot air hyperbole. Hence, this blatant apathy is probably the reason why WBOC and other media outlets don't even bother covering these stories. Why bother putting time, resources and effort into stories when the town folk don't really care about them?

You may poke fun at the Circumcision Crusaders out on Route 13 last week, but at least, they're making their voices heard. You don't have to picket to get yourselves heard but let's face it, keyboard warriors, you can't expect change when you don't bother to apply any pressure on those whom can make  change happen!

Should these racially-charged events continue or escalate, at this point, you have no one to blame but yourselves. You can't just let the world go on cruise control, complaining about it on a blog and then expect anything to change.

Therefore, while armchair quarterbacks never win a Heisman Trophy, silent wheels never get greased.

A man dressed as a woman was arrested in Virginia on Monday after police say he was caught peeping into restroom stalls three times in the past year.

Richard Rodriguez, 30, filmed a woman in a bathroom stall at the Potomac Mills Mall, Prince William County Police said on Tuesday. A 35-year-old woman was in the stall when she saw a bag moved toward her under the stall divider. Rodriguez apparently had been filming her, police said.

The victim rushed out of the stall to confront the man and saw him hurry to another stall, next to another woman. The victim alerted the woman and then contacted mall security of the shopping center on 2700 block of Potomac Mills Circle in Woodbridge, Virginia.

The House voted Thursday to ban the display of the Confederate flag on flagpoles at Veterans Administration cemeteries.

The 265-159 vote would block descendants and others seeking to commemorate veterans of the Confederate States of America from flying the Confederate Battle Flag over mass graves, even on days that flag displays are permitted.

California Democrat Jared Huffman authored the prohibition, saying the flag represents "racism, slavery and division."

Along with the Delaware State Police who worked diligently on this case, I would also recognize Deputy Attorneys General Rebecca Anderson, Christopher Hutchison, Michael Tipton, and Adam Gelof for leading the DOJ side of this very complicated and noteworthy investigation, and I thank State Prosecutor Kathy Jennings, and Chief Sussex County Prosecutor Peggy Marshall for their leadership in this important case."
Matt Denn

Delaware State Police:
"This investigation targeted a criminal organization responsible for large scale heroin distribution and money laundering in Kent and Sussex County. The presence of drugs and drug dealers in our communities invariably leads to an increase in crimes such as robberies and thefts and has a significant impact on the health and safety of our communities. The success of this drug investigation would not have been realized if it were not for the cooperation between all of the agencies involved. The large amount of drugs seized and the drug traffickers that were arrested would have continued to plague our communities. Thank you to all of our Troopers all of the Federal, State and local agencies and the Department of Justice for their excellent teamwork and collaboration on this investigation. All of our agencies remain committed to working with our communities to reduce violent crime and drug trafficking throughout the State of Delaware."

Motorcyclist Killed Instantly In Ocean City Accident

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

OCEAN CITY — An as-yet unidentified male motorcyclist lost his life in a horrific collision with a pick-up truck at the intersection of 28th Street and Philadelphia Avenue shortly after noon on Thursday.

At 12:08 p.m. on Thursday, a motorcycle traveling south on Coastal Highway at speeds estimated at around 100 mph collided with a Ford F-350 pick-up truck crossing Coastal Highway from west to east at 28th Street. The driver of the motorcycle was deceased upon the arrival of first responders. The driver of the pick-up truck was not injured during the collision. The names of the victim and the driver of the pick-up truck had not been released as of press time on Thursday afternoon.

The preliminary investigation revealed an allied law enforcement agency attempted to stop the motorcycle for a traffic violation just minutes before the collision. However, the motorcycle did not stop and fled from the allied law enforcement officer. Contrary to witness statements, the officer did not pursue the motorcycle after the failed attempt to stop it for a traffic violation and lost sight of the driver prior to the collision. It is not certain at this time where the initial attempt to stop the motorcycle occurred.

Coastal Highway was closed down in both directions immediately following the collision as the OCPD traffic safety unit, the patrol division and the criminal investigation division investigated the crash. Southbound Coastal Highway was reopened a short time later although investigators remained on the scene for hours on Thursday afternoon.

‘They Didn’t Raise Their Son Right’: Zimmerman Slams Trayvon Martin’s Parents in New Interview

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

George Zimmerman ripped into the parents of Trayvon Martin in an interview published Tuesday night, telling The Daily Beast that the pair did a poor job of raising their son and "did everything they could" to "capitalize" off his death.

"They didn't raise their son right," Zimmerman told the website.

The former neighborhood watchman was acquitted in 2013 for the shooting death of 17-year-old Martin. The minor's death ignited nationwide debate and protests on race relations. Zimmerman, however, expressed no regret in his interview with The Daily Beast.

"He attacked a complete stranger and attempted to kill him," he said.

Meteorologist Forced to Put Sweater On During Live Broadcast Because Station Received ‘A Lot of Emails’ About Her Dress

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Some KTLA-TV viewers from Los Angeles, California, didn't like meteorologist Liberté Chan's outfit Saturday — and they weren't afraid to let the station know.

In the video, Chan was presenting Saturday morning's weather report when, out of nowhere, a floating hand appeared, holding a cardigan.

"You want me to put this on?" a bewildered Chan asked. "Why? 'Cause it's cold?"

An off-camera voice quickly responded, "We're getting a lot of emails."

You know, I have always liked Sears shovels, rakes and the like. Especially the ones with the yellow fiberglass handles, which are lighter and stronger than wood. And the warranty has always been excellent: if a Craftsman tool breaks, it's exchanged for a new one at the customer's request.

I recently visited the Sears store in the Salisbury Mall to purchase a long handled shovel and a garden fork. Much to my surprise, they no longer carry shovels, picks, forks, etc. No garden or digging tools are there at all except a couple of low-quality rakes and some small gardening tools like loppers and hand cultivators. I asked the sales rep, who shrugged and said to check online.

Well, I did check online and much to my surprise, Sears doesn't sell or even make these things anymore. No more yellow-handled shovels, etc., just a couple of basic wood handled models and a couple of the same brand that's sold at Home Depot. This is a big difference from when they had a yellow-handled Craftsman line of probably twenty types of tools.

I guess that it's the end of another era.

Girls RUN From Their Locker Room – Authorities SHOCKED By Sick Find On Video

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

The incident took place at Moorpark High School in Moorpark, California, when a few girls came running out of the girl's locker room in a panic. They decided to leave in a hurry for a very good reason, which even warranted a call to the police.

As soon as police officers arrived, it seems that even they were shocked by what the school's security cameras caught, ultimately validating the girls' story. According to reports, a man entered the girl's locker room, stripped himself naked, and just stood in the back corner of the room.

Making matters worse, this apparently wasn't his first time. Police stated that he did the same thing the day before. Although it's unclear what his intentions were, police say that he did not approach the girls and soon fled after the girls took off running.

Luckily, security cameras were able to pick up the man trying to leave the area, but police weren't able to apprehend the pervert. In order to ensure he doesn't do this ever again, officials have now reached out to the public for help identifying the creep.

Salisbury Celebrates Bike to Work Week

Salisbury Celebrates Bike to Work Week

Salisbury – Grab your helmet and join Mayor Jake Day in celebrating Bike to Work Week, May 16th —20th. Bike to Work Week, which is part of the League of American Bicyclists' Bike Month, promotes bicycling as a healthy and safe alternative to automobile commuting. The Mayor encourages citizens to join the movement to make commutes more environmentally friendly, fun, and affordable by riding their bikes to work.

More than half of all U.S. citizens live within 5 miles of their workplace, making bicycling a feasible way to get to work. Cycling is sustainable, affordable, healthy, and enjoyable.

Bike-SBY founder and cycling advocate Matt Drew said he looks forward to biking to work not just this week, but almost every day. "I love to ride my bike to work. I arrive refreshed, energized, and in a great mood! I can't say the same for the days that I drive!"

The week culminates in National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 20th. At 7:30 Friday morning, Mayor Day will lead a group bike ride from the Philosophy House at Salisbury University to Main Roots in Downtown Salisbury. Main Roots has graciously offered to provide free coffee to bike commuters that day, presenting the perfect opportunity to fuel up with your morning joe before finishing your ride to work. After you leave work for the day, ride your bike to 3rd Friday where Bike-SBY will valet it so you can enjoy the festivities.

"Biking to work saves money, reduces the amount of airborne pollutants our community produces, and comes with a host of tremendous health and economic benefits. Cyclists spend, on average, 40% more per capita into our local economy than those who commute by car. I encourage everyone to put on their helmets and get out and about in our Bicycle Friendly Community this week," said the Mayor.

Visit www.Bike-SBY.org for information on Salisbury's bike initiatives, current bike routes, and Bike-Friendly Merchants that offer discounts to cyclists.

Hey Joe,

We went to the Hebron Carnival this evening for our favorite Oyster sandwich only to see the ridiculous price of $9.50. This is an increase from the price last year of $8.00 .

Don't get me wrong here, it is for a good cause but I really think that is a bit extravagant. The cost of the oysters must be very high.

I wonder if other folks feel the same as I do?

Target Store Suing a Hero Who Saved a Young Girl

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Michael Turner was shopping in Target back in 2013 when a crazed man named Leon Walls ran into the store and stabbed a 16-year-old girl, Allison Meadows. Turner responded like a true hero by grabbing a baseball bat and chasing Walls out of the store. He then proceeded to help Allison as she was bleeding. To this day, Allison thanks Turner for saving her life whenever she gets the chance.

Strangely, and sadly, Target is now suing Turner.

Target is going after the hero for "chasing Walls to the front of the store where he could have endangered more people." However, no persons were hurt. The lawsuit against Turner comes after Meadows and her family sued Target for inadequate security measures in keeping the store safe. The decision for Target to unjustly sue Turner over a ludicrous allegation has angered the Meadows family.

Target Sales Drop Amid Transgender Promotion, Consumer Boycott, $10 Billion Stock Crash

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Retail giant Target is losing sales and may be on track for another major stock-drop in the second quarter, analysts say, amid a growing boycott caused by the company's transgender friendly policies.

The company's second-quarter sales, from April to June, may drop as much as 2 percent compared to the prior year, executives told reporters and Wall Street analysts. That's "horrendous," said Jim Cramer, founder of the stock-market website, TheStreet.com.

The earnings prediction comes a month after the left-leaning company announced April 19 that it would allow men claiming to be women to use the women's bathrooms and changing rooms at its stores. The decision has sparked a boycott petition effort that garnered over 1.2 million signers in only a week.

Stunner! Obama names transgender to faith post

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

President Obama has appointed a transgender man to a prominent faith advisory position, sparking a flood of outrage from conservatives.

His recent announcement named Barbara Satin to be a member of the president's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, a choice commentator Tim Brown at Freedom Outpost scorched as a "mentally sick transgender man."

"And America tolerates this depravity!" Brown wrote. "Satin needs repentance, not an advisory position, but I don't blame Barack Obama for that. Instead, I blame the United Church of Christ for its lack of loving discipline towards Barbara. They have allowed this person to wander into sin without any loving restraints to call him to repentance and allow him to stay in good standing in the body of Christ rather than a stern and sharp rebuke of his sin towards the Creator."

Locals voice concerns on cop crash

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Two citizens raised questions and demanded answers from the Ocean City Council Monday about two separate officer-involved car crashes in the resort.

Two weeks after 67-year-old Jeffrey Yale Delong was struck and killed by a patrol car driven by an on-duty officer, George Leukel and Randy Hill used the public comment segment during the session to argue for transparency in that investigation and an incident where an undercover police officer rear-ended a school bus on March 29.

The bus was stopped at the railroad tracks at westbound Route 50 and was slowly beginning to move forward when it was struck by the officer operating a government-owned pickup truck, according to incident reports.

"I think we have a problem where the officer is being distracted by the computer in the car. I don't see that the Police Commission has had any discussion on this," Leukel said to the City Council. "Is the City Council doing anything about these accidents?"

HILLARY CLINTON SAYS HER HUSBAND WILL FIX THE ECONOMY

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Bill Clinton planted the seeds of economic destruction

On Sunday, Hillary Clinton told a crowd of supporters in Kentucky she will put her husband in charge of the economy.

"My husband, who I'm going to put in charge of revitalizing the economy, cause you know he knows how to do it," Clinton said.

According to the establishment and its pundits, the presidency of Bill Clinton was good for the economy. His tax cuts and budget restraint, it is said, were responsible for the booming economy of the 1990s.

In fact, the budget surplus at the time was the result of a stock bubble inflated by the Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve.

Humane Society of Wicomico County Pledges to Help Save One Million cats

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

The Humane Society of Wicomico County is joining animal shelters across North America to save the lives of one million more cats in the next five years. It's all part of a joint campaign of the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida and the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program.

The Million Cat Challenge is based on five key initiatives that offer every shelter, in every community, practical choices to reduce euthanasia and increase live outcomes for shelter cats.

"The shelters who have taken the Challenge are leading the way in finding and implementing new approaches to saving cats' lives," said Dr. Kate Hurley, director of the UC Davis program.

"The million cat challenge is a great opportunity for the Humane Society of Wicomico County to find more ways to increase live release rates of cats. Annually we have over 1,700 cats come through our doors and our goal is to find as many homes as possible for these cats through a series of adoption specials, other events, and programs we plan to introduce throughout the summer." –Aaron Balsamo, Executive Director, Humane Society of Wicomico County.

The Humane Society of Wicomico County is located at 5130 Citation Drive near the Airport in Salisbury. Our summer adoption hours are Tuesday from 11 am to 7 pm, and Wednesday through Saturday 11 am to 5 pm.

EPA Wants Higher Ethanol Mandate

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

EPA DROPS NEW RENEWABLE FUEL STANDARD: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Wednesday rolled out its proposed blending mandates for ethanol and other biofuels, and both sides in the debate are displeased.

Under the Wednesday plan, 18.8 billion gallons of biofuels would have to be blended into the nation's gasoline and diesel, and 14.8 billion gallons could be ethanol.

And while the total volume is 700 million gallons above this year and the ethanol volume is up 300 million gallons, the totals aren't what Congress wrote into the law in 2007.

Instead, the EPA is proposing to use a waiver authority written into the law, citing factors like a lower than expected demand for gasoline and diesel.

"This administration is committed to keeping the [renewable fuels standard] program on track, spurring continued growth in biofuel production and use, and achieving the climate and energy independence benefits that Congress envisioned from this program," Janet McCabe, head of the EPA's air pollution office, said in a statement.

The ethanol industry said it's completely unacceptable that the EPA still isn't setting the levels in the statute, and its use of the waiver is improper.

Massive Nude Anti-Trump Protest Planned for GOP Convention

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

One photographer wants to make a bold statement during the Republican National Convention this July.

Spencer Tunick is looking for 100 women to pose nude for a photoshoot in the streets of Cleveland.

Apparently, this is "art," and it's not the first time Tunick has organized this kind of stunt. Tunick has orchestrated more than 70 mass nude photo shoots all over the globe since the 1990s.

This particular work of "art" will be entitled "Everything She Says Means Everything." The plan is for 100 nude women (sorry gentlemen) to pose together for a photograph while holding up mirrors. According to the photographer's website, the goal is to reflect "the knowledge and wisdom of progressive women and the concept of 'Mother Nature.'"

Lol. That's pretty stupid.

Majority Opposed to Obama’s School Bathroom Order

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

A majority of Americans in a new poll say they oppose President Obama's order telling schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom corresponding with their gender identity, rather than biological sex.

Fifty-one percent of adults said they are against the decision, compared to 33 percent who are in favor and 16 percent who are undecided, according to a Rasmussen Reports survey released on Tuesday.

Parents of elementary and secondary school children are even more opposed to the mandate, which puts federal education dollars at risk for non-compliant schools. Fifty-five percent of parents with school children said they oppose the order, while 32 percent said they support the decision.

Americans also overwhelmingly believe the federal government should not be involved in regulating school bathroom access..

FBI Director: 'I Worry Very Much' That Young People Won't Join Police Force

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

(CNSNews.com) - "I worry very much -- especially with a lot of controversy around law enforcement these days, and sometimes healthy skepticism becoming cynicism -- that young men and women may be discouraged from pursuing this kind of service (police work)," FBI Director James Comey said last Friday.

Comey, speaking at a memorial service for FBI agents killed in the line of duty, said his own son is about to become a policeman:

"I have five children; my middle child is my son. He is about to join a police department after graduating from college. He's doing it because he wants to help people.

"I worry very much, are young men and women making that same choice today at the rate we need them to? I don't know. I think it's something we all have to worry about.

Vatican Cardinal to Americans: ‘In Your Nation, God Is Being Eroded, Eclipsed, Liquidated’

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:01 AM PDT

"In your nation, God is being eroded, eclipsed, liquidated," Cardinal Robert Sarah, who was appointed as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments by Pope Francis in 2014, told hundreds of prominent Catholic clergy and lay people attending the 12th annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast Tuesday in Washington.

In what he called "portentous times" for the Catholic Church and for the world, Cardinal Sarah condemned same-sex marriage, transgender bathroom laws, and attacks on the family as "demonic".

"All manner of immorality is not only accepted and tolerated today in advanced societies, it is even promoted as a social good," the African cardinal said. "The result is hostility to Christians and increasingly, religious persecution."

"This is not an ideological war between competing ideas," Sarah told the D.C. gathering. "This is about defending ourselves, children and future generations from the demonic idolatry that says children do not need mothers and fathers. It denies human nature and wants to cut off an entire generation from God."

Is Housing Shortage Leaving American Workers On Outside Looking In?

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

OCEAN CITY — While much of the debate this spring over the critical seasonal workforce housing shortage and the associated occupancy calculation formula focused on the legions for international student workers, it appears there is another segment being left on the outside looking in.

It's no secret Ocean City faces a critical seasonal workforce housing shortage. The deficiency was debated throughout the spring as resort officials wrestled with an outdated occupancy calculation that had been in place since 1979. Much of that debate focused on the need for safe, affordable housing for the thousands of international students who descend on Ocean City on J-1 visas each spring to fill out the resort's seasonal workforce.

The J-1 students arrive in the resort after careful vetting by their sponsor organizations. For the most part, they have pre-arranged jobs and pre-arranged housing set up by their sponsors. However, another segment of the seasonal workforce is often left on their own to find living arrangements, and with the J-1 students gobbling up much of the housing stock, it's becoming increasingly difficult.

Local worker Joe Wagner broached the subject during Monday's Mayor and Council meeting. Wagner, a long-time visitor to Ocean City, last year moved to the resort to get a fresh start and quickly found multiple employment opportunities. However, Wagner told the Mayor and Council this week finding affordable housing continues to be a challenge.

Third strike against ‘Little Library’

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

It's only been a month since Ellie Black's "Little Library" was installed at the playground at Byrd Park, but in that short time, vandals have damaged the book box three times, tearing off the door twice and smashing the glass at least once.

Each time, the town has repaired and reinforced it, and it will continue to do so, Mayor Charlie Dorman said.

"Of course, we're going to keep fixing it," he said. "And we'd like everyone's help watching over it."

Installed in April, Black's little library stands about four feet tall, is painted bright blue and has a shingled roof with a glass-paned door and a latch. Black, a fourth-grade student at Snow Hill Middle School, built the library on the weekends with her father, Brent Black, over a period of two months.

The idea came from a news report the fourth-grader saw describing the "Little Free Library" movement started in 2010. Black's project is unaffiliated with the larger program, but last week the town unveiled its own officially recognized Little Free Library at the Laundromat on Market Street. My'Jae Waters, a first-grader at Snow Hill Elementary School, was designated the "official librarian" of that effort.

Treating Opioid Addiction With A Drug Raises Hope And Controversy

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Scientists and doctors say the case is clear: The best way to tackle the country's opioid epidemic is to get more people on medications that have been proven in studies to reduce relapses and, ultimately, overdoses.

Yet, only a fraction of the more than 4 million people believed to abuse prescription painkillers or heroin in the U.S. are being given what's called medication-assisted treatment.

One reason is the limited availability of the treatment. But it's also the case that stigma around the addiction drugs has inhibited their use.

Methadone and buprenorphine, two of the drugs used for treatment, are themselves opioids. A phrase you often hear about medication-assisted treatment is that it's merely replacing one drug with another. While doctors and scientists strongly disagree with that characterization, it's a view that's widespread in recovery circles.

Now, the White House is pushing to change the landscape for people seeking help. In his 2017 budget, President Obama has asked Congress for $1.1 billion in new funding to address the opioid epidemic, with almost all of it geared toward expanding access to medication-assisted treatment.

A Touch Of Italy In Ocean City

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

So you're wondering where you can get a really great Italian food experience on the Shore, here it is.

Located in the Holiday Inn in Ocean City, I was blown away with not only the atmosphere, the food was to die for. So you know, these are over sized plates and I had the veal parm, which had two huge pieces of veal. The sauce was authentic and the service perfect.

Mind you, it is the off season, so we were seated immediately and our food came out in no time. I can honestly say I could not find one flaw in this business.

You may want to call in advance and ask for their specials. They have a chicken parm special I believe on Sunday night, (but I could be wrong).

Finally, if you like an Italian food Deli, they have one right there as you enter from the parking lot.

State seeks $700,000 in penalties from massage parlor owner

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

The Delaware Department of Justice is seeking $700,000 in civil penalties from a massage parlor owner who pleaded guilty to permitting prostitution in his businesses, including Relaxed Spa in Rehoboth.

Da Zhong Wang, 51, was charged in 2014 after undercover police were solicited for sexual acts following massages at Wang's massage parlors in Middletown, Smyrna, Dover and Rehoboth Beach. Wang pleaded guilty in August 2015 and was sentenced to one year of probation. He was fined $352 to pay for the cost of prosecution, said Carl Kanefsky, spokesman for the Department of Justice.

At Relaxed Spa, which operated on Rehoboth Avenue before closing, court records state, an undercover Delaware State Police Trooper purchased a massage, and the masseuse then solicited him for an act of prostitution.

Meizhu Zhang was charged with prostitution, and she pleaded guilty in Sussex County Court of Common Pleas in December 2014.

Are These The Final, Doomed Days Of The American Mall?

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Once upon a time, not terribly long ago, enclosed shopping malls were mammoth physical manifestations of the great American retail experience — just about everything you could want to buy all in the same sprawling building, anchored at various points by those glorious national department store chains. Then came the dramatic shift to big box stores, offering everything from TVs to hardware to clothing to groceries from one store, followed by the advent of online shopping, where all this shopping can be done in your undies and everything will be delivered to your door. One retail analyst says that recent underwhelming sales figures from Macy's and other mall mainstays could indicate that many of these relics of the not so distant past are doomed.

Why I Refuse Unnecessary Health Care

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

When I was in a car crash, I was taken quickly in an ambulance to the hospital. I was suffering from severe back pain after the accident, but I soon realized it was most likely muscle strain, which I had experienced before.

I knew there would be little the doctors could do to make me feel better, but they wanted me to stay and suggested I get an MRI on my back (I had had two MRIs previously).

Since I could still move with relative ease, I thought there was little chance I had injured my spine, and my doctors agreed. When I asked what the point was of having an MRI, they said I might have a broken rib, which the MRI would reveal. But when I asked what they would do for me if I had a broken rib, they said they wouldn't do anything and it would most likely heal on its own.

I refused the procedure and shortly recovered. I'm glad I didn't get the MRI, and to be honest I was a bit annoyed it was offered to me at all. The doctors all but admitted that it would have been pointless, so why did they even suggest it?

Ocean City Decides Against Rec Sponsorships From West OC’s Chick-fil-A

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

OCEAN CITY — The obvious divide between Ocean City and West Ocean City was clearly on display this week when resort officials shot down a proposal to allow a corporate restaurant on the opposite side of the Route 50 bridge to become a sponsor for Recreation and Parks Department special events.

It's no secret Ocean City proper on the barrier island is an entirely separate entity from West Ocean City just across the bay in Worcester County at-large in so many ways, but there are obvious similarities. Residents and visitors move freely from one to the other, enjoying the shopping, restaurants and other amenities each offer.

The two jurisdictions also share fire and ambulance service, which is a separate and often contentious issue altogether, but when it comes to business and potential sponsorship and marketing opportunities, it appears Ocean City is strictly off limits for West Ocean City entities. During Tuesday's Recreation and Parks Committee meeting, Special Events Director Frank Miller presented a proposal from Chick-fil-A, which has a restaurant in West Ocean City, to become a sponsor on some level for all of the Recreation and Parks Department's special events.

However, some committee members were less than thrilled with the idea of having a corporate entity whose only presence in the area is outside the resort having its name all over special events in Ocean City.

Maryland insurers seek to raise individual health premiums by up to 30 percent

Posted: 22 May 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Six insurance carriers are seeing rate increases ranging from 12 percent to just under 30 percent for individual health plans sold in Maryland.

The proposed rate increases would bring monthly premium prices for a mid-level plan for a 40-year-old Baltimore resident to between $264 and $415. The proposed rates are subject to review and approval by the Maryland Insurance Administration. The agency expects to release final rates late summer.

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States and Evergreen Health Cooperative all submitted requests to raise rates in 2017 for individual health plans, which are for people who aren't covered by an employer-backed health plan and instead buy coverage on their own. Individuals buy these plans through the state's online insurance marketplace, Maryland Health Connection, through a broker or directly from an insurance carrier.
