Posted: 04 Oct 2019 07:30 PM PDT The Department of Justice today unveiled a new public service announcement (PSA) created in collaboration with AARP and the Oak Ridge Boys. In announcing the launch of the video and accompanying social media campaign, Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Department of Justice's Civil Division issued the following statement: "Fraudsters are targeting and stealing billions of dollars from unsuspecting Americans every year. In order to fight this epidemic, Americans must report fraud schemes and spread the word among their families and friends. I want to thank AARP's Fraud Watch Network and the Oak Ridge Boys for working with us to fight this critical issue. Through increased awareness and reporting, the Department of Justice can continue to take swift action to end the victimization of vulnerable elderly Americans across the country." "Americans are targeted by fraudsters from all over the world," said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores of the Northern District of Oklahoma. "The scams run by con artists can wreck the financial security of retired Americans. A threat to one's hard earned savings is a threat to one's liberty. I am proud to stand with AARP and the Oak Ridge Boys to educate and empower elder Americans to defend themselves against fraudsters." "Helping people spot the signs of a scam is key to helping them avoid becoming victims," said Kathy Stokes, director of fraud prevention programs, AARP. "And encouraging people to report scam attempts and victimization will help others know what to look for, and it will help the good guys in their efforts to go after the bad guys." "The Oak Ridge Boys are honored to bring awareness to elder fraud and abuse. For too long people have taken advantage of our senior citizens, and we are teaming up with the Department of Justice and the AARP Fraud Watch Network to help you and your loved ones stay safe from scammers," said Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys. "So happy to see the Department of Justice and AARP stepping up to address this problem of elder fraud abuse. We are honored to be stepping up with you. Everyone is susceptible via phone or online, but the elderly are often the targets and victims of identity thieves and scammers. The Oak Ridge Boys are honored to lend our name and image to this worthy cause," said Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys. If you or a family member, friend, or colleague have been a victim of a fraud scheme, please report to www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork. Second Defendant Arrested in Case Alleging Theft of Trade Secrets from American Aviation Company Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:30 PM PDT Indictment unsealed today charges Russian and Italian nationals Alexander Yuryevich Korshunov, 57, and Maurizio Paolo Bianchi, 59, were charged by a criminal complaint on Aug. 21. Korshunov was arrested on Aug. 30 at Naples International Airport in Italy. A federal grand jury in Cincinnati indicted the pair on Sept. 11 with conspiracy to commit theft of trade secrets and attempted theft of trade secrets, and that indictment was unsealed today. According to the indictment, Korshunov was an employee of a Russian state-owned company and had previously been a Russian public official whose service included the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bianchi was a former director at Avio S.p.A, an Italian aerospace company until 2012. GE Aviation purchased the aerospace business from Avio S.p.A. in 2013 and operates the business as Avio Aero with its headquarters in Turin, Italy. GE Aviation is one of the world's top aircraft engine suppliers and is headquartered in the Southern District of Ohio. After leaving Avio S.p.A, Bianchi went to work for a company called Aernova in Forli, Italy. Korshunov was employed at United Engine Corp (UEC), which included a subsidiary named Aviadvigatel (a branch of the Russian state-owned company), which had been "entity listed" by the U.S. Department of Commerce in September 2018 for acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States. Aernova and Aviadvigatel had a contract during the time of the alleged conduct. It is alleged that between 2013 and 2018, Bianchi – on behalf of Korshunov – recruited current or former employees of Avio Aero to do consulting work related to jet engine accessory gearboxes for Bianchi and Korshunov. An accessory gearbox is a component mechanism used to transfer the power from the jet engine to other airplane power systems. According to court documents, the employees' statements of work typically stated that the "the holders of patent and intellectual property obtained as a result of the work are…the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation." Employees allegedly used trade secrets owned by Avio Aero and GE Aviation to create the technical report. The effort focused on accessory gearboxes made by Avio Aero that provide power to systems such as hydraulic pumps, generators and fuel pumps. Court documents detail that Korshunov allegedly arranged and paid for employees to meet with him in June 2013 at the Paris Air Show in Le-Bourget, France and in 2014 in Milan, Italy to discuss and revise the technical report. Conspiring to steal trade secrets and attempted theft of trade secrets are punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio Benjamin C. Glassman commended the investigation of this case by the FBI and the cooperation of GE Aviation, as well as Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy S. Mangan and Trial Attorney Will Mackie of the Department of Justice's National Security Division, Counterintelligence and Export Control Section, who are prosecuting the case. The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs of the Justice Department's Criminal Division assisted in the investigation. An indictment merely contains allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. |
Detroit-area man charged with defacing ICE building Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:00 PM PDT DETROIT — A Warren, Michigan, man was arrested Thursday, by special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) and the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) on charges of depredation of government property, announced United States Attorney Matthew Schneider. Schneider was joined in the announcement by ICE OPR Special Agent in Charge Keith Barwick. Corey Cook, 30, appeared in federal court Thursday, in Detroit after a criminal complaint was filed, charging him with depredation of government property. He was released on bond and preliminary examination has been set for Oct. 24. "Today's arrest should send a strong message that acts of profane vandalism of federal property will not go unchallenged," said Barwick. "These appalling attempts to intimidate and disrespect the federal workforce serve no purpose and only further heighten our commitment to uphold the law." "Let this arrest stand as an example that the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General will not tolerate acts of vandalism targeting the department's facilities," said DHS OIG SAC John Tiano. "Such acts of disrespect will never diminish the dangerous and very important work that the men and women of Immigration and Customs Enforcement perform every day to keep this country safe.""Casting aspersions about ICE only spreads fear in a community; this is unfair and without merit," said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Field Office Director Rebecca Adducci. "Our officers do their jobs professionally, humanely, and treat those they encounter with dignity and respect. It is unconscionable when those who have ideological or political beliefs that differ from the law, misdirect their attacks on ICE officers who are charged with upholding laws Congress has passed." According to court documents, on July 19, following a review of surveillance footage, authorities observed Cook taking out a can, which he shakes, and then he is observed spray painting the words "F--- ICE" on the ICE sign in front of its Mt. Elliot office. Upon completion of the graffiti, he is observed placing the can of spray paint in a bag, and then walking off. Let this arrest stand as an example that the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General will not tolerate acts of vandalism targeting the department's facilities. Such acts of disrespect will never diminish the dangerous and very important work that the men and women of Immigration and Customs Enforcement perform every day to keep this country safe. This case is the product of an investigation by the ICE OPR and DHS OIG. If convicted, Cook faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. |

Bay Bridge to begin cashless tolling on Thursdays, Fridays to reduce traffic during construction Posted: 04 Oct 2019 04:00 PM PDT ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A nearly year long project to replace the deck surface of the Bay Bridge's right lane of the westbound span kicked off last week, resulting in brutal traffic and endless complaints. Now the Maryland Transportation Authority says they're taking steps to relieve at least some of the congestion. This means drivers without an E-Zpass will be allowed to go through the toll plaza without stopping, and instead be mailed a $4.00 bill. More |

Jake and the Council Made a Great Deal for Salisbury Posted: 04 Oct 2019 03:00 PM PDT In 2016, the City Council approved a plan by Salisbury Development Group to develop two waterfront parcels at the marina with a mix of commercial and residential units. The developer was the lone bidder for the project on the city-owned lots, paying $1 to purchase one of the parcels and $1 per year to the lease the second over a 50-year term. The marina will be the first project in the Salisbury area for David Perlmutter, a principal with the Salisbury Development Group, but he has development experience in Prince Georges County and in Seaford, where he is building the Residences at River Place along the Nanticoke River. Posted: 04 Oct 2019 02:30 PM PDT BALTIMORE (WMAR) — Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is firing back on claims by Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, that he's withholding $127 million in school construction funding. On Thursday while speaking at the demolition site of the Baltimore City Detention Center, Hogan said the claims are untrue. "We had a proposal for $2 billion in school construction, the largest in history, the County Executive failed to support it because he wanted the State to pay 100 percent of school construction instead of 50 percent," Hogan said. ‘Guilt by Accusation’: Alan Dershowitz to pen book denouncing the #MeToo movement Posted: 04 Oct 2019 02:00 PM PDT Alan Dershowitz, famous for his work as a criminal defense attorney, author, and legal commentator has taken on the #MeToo movement in his most recent book, slated for release later this year. Dershowitz, 81, made headlines most recently when he was accused of having involvement in disgraced philanthropist Jeffrey Epstein's supposed sex trafficking and assault scheme. Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who says she became Epstein's sex slave as a teenager, claimed that she was forced to have sex with Dershowitz years ago. Though Dershowitz did represent Epstein as a client, he has flatly denied involvement in his supposed crimes. "I have had sex with one woman since the day I met Jeffrey Epstein," Dershowitz said of his wife, Carolyn Cohen, in his own defense earlier this year. He also characterized their relationship as having a "perfect sex life." More |
Posted: 04 Oct 2019 01:30 PM PDT One of the most shameful and egregious media failures of the year has just gotten even worse for Bloomberg Law with the exposure of a new email showing that its reporter, along with the organization, dramatically misrepresented communications with the Department of Labor as part of a hit job that temporarily led to a Trump appointee's resignation. Far from an innocent inquiry that reporter Ben Penn presented it as, an email obtained through the Freedom of Information Act shows he asked the department accusatory questions that were clearly an effort to get appointee Leif Olson fired by falsely smearing him as an anti-Semite. Penn, misrepresenting old Facebook posts, asked whether the department found Olson "fit for government service" and whether they were OK with senior employees who made "comments that were disparaging to Jews." Last month, Bloomberg Law's Penn proudly tweeted out a "scoop" that Olson, who had recently started as an adviser in the department's Wage and Hour Division, had been forced to resign after the surfacing of Facebook posts that were described as anti-Semitic. The View host asks Maddow if she's 'part of the problem' in repeated 'cry wolf' against Trump Posted: 04 Oct 2019 10:00 AM PDT The View's Abby Huntsman asked MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow if she is "a part of the problem" with Democrats and certain media members who "cry wolf" against President Trump. The topic arose while they were discussing House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff's comments about Trump and the impeachment inquiry. They specifically discussed Schiff's decision to read a fake copy of the president's controversial conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire's testimony in front of his committee last week. "My frustration is that there has been a cry wolf for so long. This is it, this is the smoking gun. He's out for two years now from Democrats, from some members of the media, that now you have people in this country that are, like, we don't believe anything anymore. They're shutting it off. They are not taking it as seriously as they should, and I ask you, do you think you're part of that problem? Do you think that you have, —" Huntsman asked. More |
No, Teen Vogue, abortion is not 'popular' Posted: 04 Oct 2019 09:45 AM PDT Teen Vogue, the magazine that shut down its print operations after Hillary Clinton lost and Condé Nast realized it functioned as little more than toilet paper at a sorority social, has an interesting addition to "Across the Aisle," their article series attempting to document political divides. Abortion, the outlet says, is "popular." "Abortion may have incredibly vocal opponents, but polling that's been conducted since before abortion was legal shows that reproductive choice was and remains popular," Caitlin Cruz writes. "Maybe it's time for the national media to treat abortion supporters as the loudest voices in the room." To her credit, Cruz actually cites public opinion polls. Unfortunately, Cruz obviously doesn't know how to read them. More |

Posted: 04 Oct 2019 09:15 AM PDT After a video went viral showing a young Christian black man forgiving the former police officer who killed his brother, many praised the gracious act, but others questioned the move and wondered if the same would have occurred if their races were swapped. Brandt Jean, 18, told former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger in court Wednesday that he forgave her for killing his unarmed brother, 26-year-old Botham Jean. Guygur maintained that she shot him when she walked into the wrong apartment, thinking it was her own, and though he was a burglar. "I personally want the best for you," Brandt said after the jury sentenced Guygur to a 10-year prison sentence for murder. "I wasn't going to say this in front of my family, I don't even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that's exactly what Botham would want for you. Give your life to Christ. I think giving your life to Christ is the best thing Botham would want for you." Brandt then embraced Guygur, whose racist texts and social media posts had surfaced during the trial. More |
Posted: 04 Oct 2019 09:00 AM PDT The Democratic head of the House Intelligence Committee, Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, learned about the outlines of a C.I.A. officer's concerns that President [Donald] Trump had abused his power days before the officer filed a whistle-blower complaint," reports The New York Times in a blockbuster story that undermines what little credibility Schiff had left. Schiff and his PR team at the Times are building his defense in this matter around the assertion that the congressman never met with the whistleblower. Schiff asserted numerous times before Wednesday that he did not know about the complaint before the inspector general of the intelligence community (IGIC) notified his committee. He asserted on Sept. 17, when news of the complaint first surfaced, "We have not spoken directly with the whistleblower." And according to Schiff's intelligence committee spokesman, "At no point did the committee review or receive the complaint in advance." Those smokescreen denials sound quite similar to the claims of the whistleblower's attorney, Mark Zaid: "I can unequivocally state that neither any member of the legal team nor the whistleblower has ever met or spoken with Congressman Schiff about this matter." Thanks to the Times, however, we now know this is a lie. And by Schiff's spokesperson's own admission, the congressman's office referred the whistleblower to the IGIC. More |

During questioning this juvenile ultimately confessed to her involvement with making the call. The juvenile was taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff's Office for processing. A Viewer Writes...........Fruitland Ditches Posted: 04 Oct 2019 08:30 AM PDT Hey this is a long shot but worth a shot. theses pictures are from our ditches at the end of school street in Fruitland. They begin from the highway meandering behind several properties beside the intermediate School and eventually to the river. Every ditch is filled with small trees and overgrow. We live at the dead end side of Fruitland and almost every rain storm floods our yards, our sheds. The water rushes from the deep highway ditches into the very small ditches in the yards and immediately begins to over flow. Sometimes the water get almost two feet deep in the yards past the dead end. We have met with Fruitland officials who say that the ditch is not their responsibility. We have called Wicomico County and they say it's Fruitlands responsibility. We have even called the state and they say their responsibility stops at the highway. Nobody around can remember the last time the ditches have been dug out or cleaned. Every official wants to pass the buck, but as a Fruitland resident we pay city taxes, county taxes, and of course the state finds ways to tax us, yet we get nothing in return. Eventually after every storm the water receded, the residents at the dead end pick up all the highway trash that has flowed into our yard, check our sheds to see what was ruined this time, and hope someone will show up eventually to fix this. Please Salisbury New post this or help us find the proper channel. In the past you have posted fallen bridge concrete, potholes and other problems cities don't care about, and as soon as comment roll in suddenly they are there to help. Posted: 04 Oct 2019 07:00 AM PDT The Democrats' purported outrage about President Donald Trump's phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky might be taken seriously by the Republicans were it not for the Democrats' drive to oust Trump from the moment he won the presidency. CNN's Van Jones, with zero proof, attributed Trump's victory to "whitelash." Trump received 57% of the white vote, actually a lower percentage of the white vote than the 59% received by Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate in 2012. In 2008, Democrat Barack Obama received a greater percentage of the white vote than John Kerry did four years earlier. Obama also received 95% of the black vote. None dared call it "blacklash." Stunned, angry and bewildered by Trump's win, some Democrats urged the Electoral College to refuse to certify his victory. In a Washington Post op-ed, John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, said, "The (Obama) administration should brief members of the electoral college on the extent and manner of Russia's interference in our election before they vote on Dec. 19 (2016)." Maxine Waters Blames Trump For Making Her A Target: ‘He’s Setting Some Of Us Up To Be Killed’ Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:45 AM PDT Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) criticized President Donald Trump on Wednesday for endangering her own safety by supposedly dog-whistling to white supremacists to start a civil war over the House's impeachment inquiry. "[Trump] should not be going after anybody," Waters told MSNBC host Ali Velshi. "He is the president of the United States of America. He is setting some of us up to be killed. I have death threats constantly." "There are a number of people who have been convicted for threatening to kill me, and when he does that he's dog-whistling to the white supremacists, the KKK, and the dangerous people," she continued. "We have stories about many of those white supremacists who do nothing but practice how they're going to be involved in a civil war and fight against this government. This president is irresponsible in so many ways aside from making us a target of these white supremacists." More |
Speaker Pelosi: Trump 'Scared' Of Impeachment Inquiry Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:30 AM PDT (WASHINGTON) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that President Donald Trump is "scared" of the impeachment inquiry she launched last week centered on a whistleblower complaint alleging he pressured Ukraine to help investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and interfere in the 2020 presidential election. "I think the president knows the argument that can be made against him, and he's scared," Pelosi, D-Calif., told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos in an interview in her ceremonial office in the U.S. Capitol to be broadcast Thursday morning on Good Morning America. "And so he's trying to divert attention from that to where [he's] standing in the way of legislation," she said. Shortly before Pelosi sat for the interview with Stephanopoulos, the president dismissed the inquiry with an expletive and tweeted advice to Democrats to choose "a better candidate" than Hillary Clinton in 2020. "The Do Nothing Democrats should be focused on building up our Country, not wasting everyone's time and energy on [B***S***], which is what they have been doing ever since I got overwhelmingly elected in 2016, 223-306," Trump tweeted, referring to the electoral vote. "Get a better candidate this time, you'll need it!" More |
Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:15 AM PDT It's a common internet experience: throw a foreign phrase into Google Translate or any other online translation tool and out comes a farcical approximation of the real thing. That's why many experts — even Google itself — caution against relying on the popular Google Translate for complex tasks. Google advises users that its machine translation service is not "intended to replace human translators." Yet the U.S. government has decided that Google Translate and other machine translation tools are appropriate for one task: helping to decide whether refugees should be allowed into the United States. Marshall Gabell Responds to Rick Meehan Blog Post Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:00 AM PDT Mr. Joe Albero, I absolutely appreciate you taking the time to post my views on SBYNEWS. However, I find the blog to be a little discredited due to the "Anonymous" comments simply slandering and spamming the post. It is evident that a lot of the comments are just one person commenting, acting as multiple. In fact, only two comments aren't anonymous ... one including myself. If I could offer a suggestion, it would be to mandate someone to post their names along with their comments. It simply looks like obsessive slander otherwise, especially since the time is posted, too. Again, I appreciate you posting. I will be sure to include you in any future press releases from my team and I. Best regards, Marshall Gabell rcomarshallgabell@gmail.com Editor's Note. Mosby Disputes Gov. Hogan Claim She Never Reached Out About Violent Crime Posted: 04 Oct 2019 04:00 AM PDT Gov. Larry Hogan denied Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's recent comments that her office tried to contact his in recent months. Mosby said last month her office had worked for months to contact Hogan's office before the governor directed Attorney General Brian Frosh to prosecute violent crime in Baltimore. "Marilyn Mosby has never actually asked for a meeting with me about the crime in the city," Hogan told reporters after a press conference marking the start of demolition on the old Baltimore City Detention Center. "I never made any critical comments about the state's attorney at all. I did just say we wanted to back her up and provide as much assistance as we could." For her part, Mosby maintained her side of the story was accurate. More |
