Subject: Bureaucrats Strip Vets' Gun Rights

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 09:00 PM PDT

Congressional lawmakers want answers. Senators Charles Grassley and Johnny Isakson sent a letter to the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs asking why the agency reports any veteran who is assigned a fiduciary trustee to the FBI as mentally defective, thus stripping the veteran of their right to keep and bear arms.

So far, the VA has reported to the FBI 260,000 individuals — equivalent to a quarter of the number of people in Texas who have a license to carry.

While all federal agencies are required to report "mentally defective" individuals to the FBI so they can be noted in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, the VA refers an astounding 99.3% of such cases. All other agencies account for just 0.7%. With ruthless "efficiency" like that coming from the same bureaucracy guilty of the wait-time scandal, does anyone suspect abuse of the system?

A bureaucracy with no due process is most certainly not the answer. Yet the gun-grabbing Obama administration wants to institute a similar policy as the VA within the Social Security Administration.

Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center Gets Senate Approval For Alcohol Sales

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 04:18 PM PDT

As you will learn from the information below, your local main stream media refused to investigate the details of alcohol sales and instead have attempted to go after County Executive Culver implying he is violating the original agreement.

In fact, former Executive Pollitt knew of this information and we even discussed it years ago but he was not willing to move forward with it.

The Bill has passed the Senate, (sponsored by Senator Jim Mathias) and was reviewed today in a 1st reading by the Hearing Committee in Annapolis. They had no questions about moving it to a second reading and ultimately it will pass through the House. Governor Hogan will then sign off on it.

The idea that Wicomico County can now address a minor league hockey team and even attract better adult venues is a major home run for the county. Many citizens do not realize that a LOT of promoters refuse to come to Wicomico County because they do not have alcohol.

The local media needs to stop going after Culver and embrace the new and positive economic development. The RUMOR of an original agreement of no alcohol sales is just not true. The language below proves just that. There is no trickery here and no one is pulling a fast one.

Here's the legal breakdown

In 1946, the Mr. and Mrs. Woodcock conveyed a parcel of land to Wicomico County. Separately, the County also obtained an adjoining parcel, the Hearn parcel. Eventually, the Civic Center would be constructed on these two parcels.

In 1959, Wicomico County conveyed the Woodcock parcel and the Hearn parcel to the Wicomico War Memorial Builders, Inc. ("WWMB"), an entity apparently created to raise funds and help construct the original Civic Center.

The Woodcocks joined in the 1959 deed with Wicomico County to remove a possibility of reverter clause and to expressly release and quit-claim any rights that they had in the property.

In 1971, the WWMB conveyed the parcels back to Wicomico County.

Analysis

The 1946 deed from the Woodcocks to the County prohibited the sale and dispensation of alcohol and required that the property be used as a youth center. The only interest the Woodcocks had in the property was a possibility of regaining ownership if certain acts occurred, i.e. alcohol being served at the property.

In the 1959 deed from the County to WWMB, the Woodcocks expressly removed all of the conditions of their 1946 deed to the County. The 1959 deed acknowledged that the property would be subject to restrictions contained only within the 1959 deed.

The 1959 deed by Wicomico County contains language that prohibits the sale and dispensation of alcohol on the premise and states that the restriction runs with the land. Therefore, Wicomico County created a covenant against alcohol in this deed. The Woodcocks did not own the property at the time of the 1959 deed and they could not burden it with a restrictive covenant. Only the owner of a property can place a covenant on a property.

In 1971, WWMB conveyed the property back to the County. The alcohol covenant was not included in the deed. Under common law, a covenant terminates when all the land is returned to the party that created and benefited from the covenant. In this case, Wicomico County created the alcohol restriction and benefited from it until 1971. When ownership of the parcel returned to Wicomico County 45 years ago, the restriction was extinguished as a matter of law.

Bypass The Medicine Cabinet – Technology Stands Ready To Temporarily Relieve Pain

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 08:30 PM PDT

Technology, already critical in many areas of health care, is poised to play an even greater role in medicine, especially in the area of pain management.

"Instead of pharmaceuticals, you are going to see the emergence of 'technaceuticals,' " says David B. Sutton, CEO of Physician's Technology LLC and co-inventor of the Willow Curve, a low-level smart laser that treats joint pain.

Such technology is being developed at an opportune time because many people prefer to avoid pain medication when possible. Also, the CDC recently urged doctors who prescribe opioids to cut down on their use because of the risk that patients can become addicted to these narcotics, as well as the alarming increased incidence of fatal prescription-medication overdose.

"You also have this tsunami of aging baby boomers who have seen technology solving all kinds of problems their entire lives," Sutton says. "It seems natural to them to look to technology to address more and more of their health care needs."

A variety of gadgets are helping to re-invent medicine, from new scanning technology that gives a clearer picture of lung disease to magnetic nanoparticles that stop strokes caused by blood clots.

The Willow Curve™, which Sutton co-invented with Dr. Ronald Shapiro, is one example of how technology can work to temporarily ease chronic pain and is the leading product in the developing field of technaceuticals.

Because it's also a smart computer, the device assesses the condition of the joint and delivers a targeted digital treatment.

A variety of ailments can be treated with technaceuticals, including arthritis, general joint pain, knee pain, tennis elbow and rotator-cuff injuries, among many others.

"This is a way to use technology to temporarily relieve pain, reduce swelling, improve mobility and improve the quality of life," Sutton says.

Such digital-therapeutic technology could be appealing for consumers who:

• Want to reduce chemical dependency. Technology may not replace pain pills completely, but it does provide a safe alternative for those who want to reduce their dependency on chemicals and avoid side effects.
• May not be surgical candidates. Some people may not be eligible candidates for surgery and others want more time to decide, Sutton says. Technology that helps them temporarily reduce chronic pain puts them in a better position to remain active by temporarily relieving their joint pain while they decide.
• Want to manage health care at a lower cost. Health insurance provides limited reimbursements for many procedures and the cost of co-pays is rising. Treatment that continues over time – such as for prescription medication – can cause expenses to add up. In comparison, an in-home technological device is a one-time expense.

"This technology isn't meant as a substitute for medical treatment, but can be used in tandem with it," Sutton says. "Potentially, as the use of digital-therapeutic technology grows, the nation could see massive savings in health-care costs."

States With the Most Undocumented Immigrants: Maryland Is #11

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 08:00 PM PDT

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made illegal immigration a cornerstone of his campaign, proposing a simple solution for the nation's immigration woes: build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said, if elected president, he would seek out and deport anyone in the country illegally. In contrast, Democratic candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proposes "a path to full and equal citizenship." The varied policy proposals by presidential candidates reflect the schism of opinion among Americans on immigration issues.

Despite immigration being a key talking point on the campaign trail, the numbers don't always match up with the hype. People living in the country illegally have impacted the workforce, lowering wages and job availability for U.S. citizens without a high school diploma. But other data points suggest a positive impact. This diverse group makes up 5.1 percent of the U.S. workforce and pays an estimated $12 billion into Social Security. Contrary to the amount of attention the issue gets, the number of documented people in the U.S., estimated at almost 11 million, is actually on the decline.

One Hundred Forty-seven FBI Agents Have Been Deployed to the Clinton E-mail Investigation

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 07:30 PM PDT

Hillary Clinton's email problems began in her first days as secretary of state. She insisted on using her personal BlackBerry for all her email communications, but she wasn't allowed to take the device into her seventh-floor suite of offices, a secure space known as Mahogany Row.

For Clinton, this was frustrating. As a political heavyweight and chief of the nation's diplomatic corps, she needed to manage a torrent of email to stay connected to colleagues, friends and supporters. She hated having to put her BlackBerry into a lockbox before going into her own office.

Her aides and senior officials pushed to find a way to enable her to use the device in the secure area. But their efforts unsettled the diplomatic security bureau, which was worried that foreign intelligence services could hack her BlackBerry and transform it into a listening device.

Ben Carson warns against ‘shenanigans’ with GOP delegates

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 07:00 PM PDT

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson said Monday that if there are "shenanigans" with delegates to the GOP convention this summer, it could end up costing Republicans not only the White House, but the House and Senate as well.

"I can tell you this: If there are shenanigans, if it's not straightforward, all of those millions of people that Donald Trump has brought into the arena are not going to stay there, and the Republicans are going to lose, and it's going to be not only the presidency, but it's going to be the Senate and it could even be the House," Mr. Carson said on "Fox and Friends."

Mr. Carson asked whether establishment Republicans are more concerned about maintaining control and their positions, "or are they more concerned about America?"

Paul Ryan faces primary challenge

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 06:30 PM PDT

A wealthy businessman with tea party ties confirmed Sunday that he is mounting a primary challenge to House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, saying that after donating to the Wisconsin Republican's past campaigns he feels "betrayed" by the speaker on trade deals and immigration.

The businessman, who is not yet revealing his identity, promised that his run will "shake up the establishment in a profound way," according to a political consultant close to the prospective candidate.

The emergence of a viable Republican challenger in Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District is the culmination of a months-long recruitment effort by tea party activists who say they were double-crossed by Mr. Ryan when he passed a $2 trillion spending package late last year.

Eric Odom, a conservative activist and political consultant in Wisconsin, confirmed with "100 percent certainty" that a local business leader would be running to oust Mr. Ryan.

"I've had the privilege of attending multiple meetings with this individual, during which he has expressed his sense of betrayal by Speaker Ryan. He has a strong desire to see real representation for the people of the district versus a congressman who represents special interests in Washington," he said.

5 Reasons Republicans Will (Mostly) End Up Backing Donald Trump

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 06:00 PM PDT

The Republican Party's immune system — which once fought off David Duke and Pat Buchanan with relative ease — is completely failing.

Decades of serving their base a toxic blend of white-identity politics and ridiculous promises — spiced with a paranoia that instructs them not to trust anyone who doesn't tell them exactly what they want to hear — has left the right-wing army of older, angrier, whiter men vulnerable to an interloping con artist with a powerful sense of how to get inside his marks' brains. And because Donald Trump tells the GOP base exactly what they want to hear, every attempt to signal his danger to the the Republican Party — and the nation — sounds like a "nattering nabob of negativism."

The Trump virus arrives at the worst possible time for the GOP elite. On the whole, conservatism is on the rise, controlling not only both houses of Congress but more state legislatures than at any time since before the Great Depression. And with the American public rarely willing to give one party more than three consecutive terms in the White House, they have a real chance to elect a president who could set the course of the Supreme Court for decades.

Obama amnesty undercut by sky-high applications approval rate for Dreamers

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 05:30 PM PDT

President Obama's deportation amnesty for illegal immigrant Dreamers approved 93 percent of all applications decided through December — a strikingly high number that will likely play a role next month when the Supreme Court hears a legal challenge to a broader amnesty.

The program for Dreamers was considered a test run for the broader amnesty Mr. Obama announced in late 2014, and which has been held up by lower courts as judges sort out whether the administration had the authority to grant tentative stays of deportation, issue work permits and make illegal immigrants eligible for some taxpayer benefits.

For Mr. Obama, the key to his argument is that he is not rewriting the law but only offering guidance on how to prioritize enforcement. He insists his officers still have discretion in every case to grant or deny amnesty, even if someone meets all the criteria for the program, known in governmentspeak as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

But his opponents say the 93 percent approval rate undercuts that argument.

"It tells me that they're rubber-stamping DACA applications. Any program that four years after its initiation is still approving 93 percent of applicants is a program that doesn't have very high standards," said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for an immigration crackdown.

Dr. Alan Mendoza: Brussels Shows Multiculturalism ‘Simply Has Not Worked’

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 05:00 PM PDT

Dr. Alan Mendoza, founder and Executive Director of the Henry Jackson Society, said the coordinated terrorist bombings in Brussels must force Europeans to consider multiculturalism simply has not worked and they must "remember what being European is" Tuesday morning on Breitbart News Daily on SiriusXM.

He warned that European terror networks would almost certainly include operatives who had gained combat experience in Syria, capable of pulling off massive coordinated attacks like the one that struck Brussels. To face this escalating threat, Mendoza said European governments needed to spend more money on intelligence-gathering operations, and "get real in terms of surveillance" on Islamist radicals.

When host Stephen K. Bannon expressed the frustration of people across the Western world trying to live their daily lives in the face of relentless Islamist terrorism, Dr. Mendoza said, "The crisis of Western civilization is the response, rather than the acts itself."

"What we desperately need, and what Europeans will have to begin to understand, is that their idea of multiculturalism — their idea of allowing communities to come into their societies and act as they please, rather than as we would ask everyone to behave — has simply not worked.

Donald Trump flawed? On every front, Washington is worse

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 04:00 PM PDT

Their delusions swarm unabated.

All the political experts and professional politicians here in the beating heart of the federal Leviathan are still stuck in denial over the unstoppable electoral sensation that is Donald Trump.

But he is a crook, a con-man, a cheesy huckster! He doesn't understand that proper politicians are never supposed to actually say the truth. That's what they call a "gaffe," a "blunder," a "slip-of-the-tongue."

Always best to just put out a statement. "Walk it back," they call it. Express regret.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Mr. Trump is the Big Bad Wolf and with one puff he has blown away all their silly houses made of straw or feathers or whatever fraudulent materials these people dwell among.

Worse yet, they say, there is solid, incontrovertible proof that he is a liar and a con artist and aims to pull off a great swindle against the American people.

The problem, of course, is that all of this comes from the very people who have already pulled off the greatest swindles in the history of mankind. Not since the Garden of Eden have mortals been exposed to such evil and thievery as this government allows, encourages or flat-out perpetrates.

How To Survive Generational Transition In A Family Business

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 03:30 PM PDT

If you're part of a family business, there's good news and bad news, says Family Business USA president Henry Hutcheson.

More than 70 percent of all businesses in the United States are family businesses, generating more than half of the U.S. Gross National Product (GNP). However, two out of three don't survive to the next generation, and with 500,000 new businesses starting each month in the United States, family businesses are replaced at a rapid rate.

How does a family business remain on the plus side of these statistics?

"There are a number of sound practices while sustaining a family business," Hutcheson says, "but there's a big difference between working with your children and lining up your succession plan with your kids in mind."

Hutcheson, author of "Dirty Little Secrets of Family Business" (dirtylittlesecretsoffamilybusiness.com), provides tips for dealing with the biggest threat to a family business – surviving transition to the next generation.

• Identify your children's individual strengths. It's impossible for your son or daughter to think and act exactly like you. If you're the founder of the business, this may be even more difficult to keep in mind because you started a business from scratch. Your children may not have the same entrepreneurial spirit. That's perfectly okay, because your business is in a different stage from when you started it. While experience has given you a large bank of knowledge, allow your successor to shine and contribute at their pace. Guide them gently; they will want to do some things their own way. Let them know when they've done something exceptional, especially if you wouldn't have thought of it.
• Expose your children to all aspects of the job. Merchandising, production, management, buying, marketing, financial planning – the list goes on regarding all the things to understand in general management. You may not be an expert in all areas, but you know more than the average employee. To start preparing your children for the top position, they must understand how things work at the bottom. When they've spent time in the trenches, they better comprehend operations, and the kind of people they'll need to employ in the future.
• Stretch your children's abilities by having them work for another company. The period after graduation is a scary phase of life, but jumping into the family business right away isn't the best move. Children have an urge to distinguish themselves from their parents, and working for another company is a great way to do so. Let them spread their wings, learn new things and appreciate small victories outside of the business. If and when they choose to work for the family business, they'll feel better about the decision.

"A mentoring relationship toward the next generation is also extremely helpful," Hutcheson says. "It provides a realistic but loving perspective."

Secret Service Says Michelle Fields Touched Trump

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 02:46 PM PDT

Donald Trump asks on his Twitter account whether he can "press charges" against Michelle Fields, as David Martosko of the Daily Mail prints purported quotes from an anonymous Secret Service agent in Trump's security detail — claiming Fields was warned she was too close to the billionaire presidential candidate.

From the Daily Mail:

Republican front-runner Donald Trump's campaign manager Corey Lewandowski has been charged with simple battery for allegedly grabbing a reporter, in a case that may hinge on a Secret Service claim that the journalist first made unwanted physical contact with the billionaire-turned-politician.

'Victory press conference was over. Why is she allowed to grab me and shout questions? Can I press charges?' Trump tweeted this afternoon.

This Country Proves Trump is Right

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 02:30 PM PDT

For months, the lamestream media has openly mocked Donald Trump's brilliant plan to "build a great, great wall on our southern border, and have Mexico pay for it." While the latter part is in doubt, Trump's detractors argument, that walls don't work, is nothing more than a huge embarrassing lie, meant to advance 1)the aims of large multinational corporations that prefer paying low wages to foreigners and 2) liberals desperate to hand welfare and voting rights to low skilled Mexican laborers at the expense of hardworking Americans. It's also wrong. Walls do work, and one country is leading the way when it comes to protecting their residents from radical Islamists and other foreign drug smuggling smut peddlers. As the Daily Caller notes:

Several European countries have erected fences to keep migrants out, and, according to the numbers, every case appears to have a large impact.

Hungary was a popular pathway for refugees on their way to Germany during the fall. When the daily illegal border crossings were at 7,000 per day, Prime Minister Viktor Orban decided to erect a fence along the border to Serbia and Croatia.

The result speaks for itself:

When the fence went up Oct. 17, the influx went down to 870 from 6,353 only a day earlier. Illegal border crossing were steadily below 40 per day throughout the rest of the month. The number picked up slightly in February, after migrants destroyed part of the fence, but it remains in the low hundreds.

This isn't rocket science, and the American people and Donald J. Trump recognize it. Now if only we can get Mexico to pay for it...

ISIS Kidnapped a Catholic Priest. What Happened Next Was Horrifying

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 02:00 PM PDT

The worst fears of the Catholic community were realized this week. Father Thomas Uzhunnali, the Catholic priest kidnapped by ISIS, was crucified by the terrorist organization on Good Friday. As the Daily Mail confirms:

The Indian Catholic priest kidnapped by ISIS-linked terrorists in Yemen earlier this month was crucified on Good Friday, it has been claimed.

Father Thomas Uzhunnalil, 56, was taken by Islamist gunmen, reportedly linked to ISIS, who attacked an old people's home in Aden, southern Yemen, killing at least 15 people, on March 4.

The terrorists reportedly carried out the heinous murder on Good Friday, after threatening to do so earlier in the week, according to the Archbishop of Vienna

It was reported last week that several religious groups had received threats that Father Thomas would be crucified on Good Friday, but this was denied by his church in hometown of Bangalore.

However, the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schƶnborn, told a congregation gathered in St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Austrian capital that the priest had been crucified.

As we've said here at American Action News: whether the increasingly secular, navel gazing majority of the liberal west wants to admit it or not, we are engaged in a Holy War with Islamic savages who loathe our Judeo Christian values as much as they loathe our liberalism. Father Thomas died as a true martyr for his faith, and he is surely in paradise. In response, it is the absolute duty of the free world to send his persecutors to hell where they belong. In the meantime, we can only pray that Father Thomas has found peace:

"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Is Hillary Terrified of Bernie?

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Hillary Clinton's debate performances have been wooden and terrible, a combination of her robotic tone, anti personality, and feeble explanations for her cozy relationship with Wall Street. Predictably, Democratic audiences have responded by casting votes for her rival, septuagenarian socialist crackpot Bernie Sanders. So it's no surprise that after Bernie's big weekend sweep, Team Clinton is terrified, and they're plugging the leak. For the time being, Hillary has decided to avoid debating Bernie until he...can behave himself?

Hillary Clinton's chief campaign strategist laid into Bernie Sanders' camp on Monday for its insistence upon a debate before the April 19 primary in New York, remarking that the Vermont senator has reneged on his promise to avoid running a negative campaign and therefore does not get to dictate the terms of any future debates.

Appearing on CNN, Joel Benenson was asked about comments from the Sanders campaign over the weekend calling for another debate before the New York primary, though he said he did not see that as the most notable story out of the weekend. Instead, he referred to a Washington Post story in which Sanders' campaign discussed possible efforts to sharpen rhetoric against the former secretary of state. "They're talking about running harsher negatives now," Benenson said, responding that he was not distracting from the issue but explaining the campaign's stance.

"Because I think the real question is what kind of campaign is Sen. Sanders going to run going forward," Benenson remarked. "He pumped $4 million in the weekend before March 15, and he lost all five states on March 15. They spent about $4 million running negative ads."

This is likely a power move made by a frontrunner who knows she can't afford any more disastrous debate performances. Still, it's a bad sign for the general election. Recall that Sanders basically squandered any advantage he might have over Clinton in this primary when he almost immediately stated that the American people were "sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails!" Since then, he's only crossed into "Brooklyn loud" territory when Hillary has blatantly lied about his record. Overall, Sanders tenor has been so milquetoast that you wonder if he's running nothing more than a protest/issue candidacy.

This begs the question: if Hillary is afraid to face lightweight Bernie Sanders in a debate, will she even show up when it's time to take on the brash New York billionaire who's likely to be the Republican nominee?

Castro Issues Final Insult to Obama

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 01:00 PM PDT

Barack Obama's disgraceful visit to the island prison known as Cuba, where he took in a baseball game with mass murderer Raul Castro and did the wave while Brussels burned, couldn't possibly get more embarrassing.

But what if it could?

Fidel Castro rebuked President Obama in a lengthy diatribe Monday just days after his historic visit to Cuba.

The former Cuban revolutionary leader published a letter in state-controlled media titled "Brother Obama," in which he recalled the U.S.' past efforts to overthrow his government.

"We do not need the empire to give us anything," Castro wrote.

Make no mistake- the United States could conquer Cuba and liberate its people with very little effort. It's one thing that we let this communist backwater prison nation exist 90 miles off our shores. It's an entirely different thing when an American president who is supposed to serve as the advocate for human liberty around the globe goes there, kisses the ring, and then gets his finger bit off by a tin pot coward like Castro. Obama's tour has been a weeklong repudiation of the Monroe Doctrine. We can't wait to see him go.

RNC War on Guns?

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 12:30 PM PDT

Ohio is an open carry state, but Republicans who support the right to bear arms- a strong majority of the GOP- will be unable to carry at the Republican National Convention. As CNN reports:

A petition to allow firearms inside the Republican National Convention in Cleveland has collected more than 22,000 signatures as of Saturday afternoon."Though Ohio is an open carry state, which allows for the open carry of guns, the hosting venue — the Quicken Loans Arena — strictly forbids the carry of firearms on their premises," the petition says. The petition's author, who is identified as "N A," asks the three remaining GOP candidates to ask the Republican National Committee to advocate for changes to this policy.

"In order to ensure the safety of your supporters, delegates and all attendees at the convention in July, you must call upon the RNC to rectify this affront to our Second Amendment freedoms and insist upon a suspension of the Quicken Loans Arena's unconstitutional 'gun-free zone' loophole," the petition reads.

The petition says Cleveland is a violent city and cites the threat of terrorism and all three Republican candidates' opposition to gun-free zones as reasons why attendees should be allowed to carry inside the arena.
This is all very true. Although Quicken Loans Arena is a private venue, the fact of the matter is Cleveland is a dangerous city, and RNC attendees who are forced to disarm may be prime targets for criminals. Moreover, this is a massive event. The RNC should use its considerable weight to seek accommodation for its attendees.

We've attached a petition, in addition to the petition attached to the CNN piece we've linked. We encourage you to sign both and let the RNC know how you feel.

This Reminds Me Of Our Local MSM: Media’s Ignorance Of Farming [Opinion]

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PDT

Those of you who read my February editorial know that many years ago I worked as a newspaper reporter and editor. I spent time on the business beat, and because the newspaper was located where a wide range of produce was grown, I naturally wrote a lot of stories about fruits and vegetables.

The majority of the editors at the newspaper were from urban areas, which I think was the reason they often either had a tough time grasping these stories, or thought I was biased toward growers. I'm sure you know what I mean, they thought agriculture used way too much of California's limited water supply, or that farmers used too many pesticides, etc.

Because of that, I sighed long and hard upon reading a recent Associated Press story that slams the state's growers. That's why I felt like standing up and applauding a recent story by Cory Lunde, Director, Strategic Initiatives & Communications for Western Growers.

Lunde's opening line, or 'lede' as it's called in the business, is classic: "Most news reporters don't know squat about the business of farming, and thanks to a pervasive bias, they don't care. That is the obvious conclusion one would reach after reading a recent Associated Press article that opens with this not-so-subtle lede: 'A new state report shows California farmers reaping record sales despite the epic drought, thriving even as city-dwellers have been forced to conserve water, household wells have run dry and fish have died.'"

Statement from Governor Larry Hogan on Final Passage of FY 2017 Budget

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 10:30 AM PDT

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Governor Larry Hogan today released the following statement in response to the final passage of the FY 2017 budget:

"I would like to thank Senate President Miller, Speaker Busch and the leadership and members of the Senate and House for their tremendous work in finalizing the FY 2017 budget. A fiscally responsible budget is our number one priority and it is the most important bill that the General Assembly will pass. Its completion weeks before the end of the legislative session sends a strong message to Marylanders that the executive and legislative branches work better when they work together.

"This budget once again provides a record investment in education and I commend both chambers for supporting our commitment to making sure Maryland's education system remains one of the best. It is especially exciting to see that both the Senate and House are backing our fight to provide scholarships for students from low income families to attend nonpublic schools. This innovative program was part of the Maryland Education Tax Credit and it has the potential to make a huge difference to students and families across the state.

"Although there are still deep concerns about actions taken by the legislature to spend dollars set aside for the Rainy Day Fund, in the final weeks of the 2016 session, this administration will continue to work with our colleagues in the legislature to achieve shared goals and enact real, common-sense solutions."

Brussels Bomber Was ‘Migrant Rights Activist’

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 09:45 AM PDT

The first man charged with the Islamic State (IS) Brussels terror attacks is a migrant rights activist and 'freelance journalist' who lived next door to headquarters of the European Union (EU).

Faycal Cheffou is thought to be the "man in the hat" pictured next to suicide bombers Najim Laachraoui and Ibrahim El Bakraoui as they entered Brussels airport shortly before 8am on the 22nd on March.

A taxi driver who dropped the men at the airport has identified him. When asked if he was the suspected third bomber, a source close to the inquiry told AFP: "That is a hypothesis the investigators are working on."

Mr. Cheffou was listed as working for a radio station for North African migrants in an article from 2005. He claimed to be a 'freelance journalist' who took a special interest in refugees.

Last year Brussels Mayor, Yves Mayeur, accused him of trying to recruit jihadists among asylum seekers and migrants living at a refugee centre at Maximilien park near the northern rail station.

According to Belgium paper Le Soir, Mr. Mayeur considered him to be "dangerous" and repeatedly tried without success to have him legally expelled from the centre. Finally, in September, the mayor issued a ban to keep him out of the park.

Chicago Credit Rating lowered to 1 Step above Junk

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 09:37 AM PDT

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's credit rating has been downgraded to one step above junk grade by Fitch Ratings after the Illinois Supreme Court struck down Mayor Rahm Emanuel's reform plan for two city pensions.

Fitch lowered Chicago's rating from BBB+ to BBB- on Monday, increasing the cost of borrowing.

Fitch said it believes Thursday's ruling "was among the worst of the possible outcomes for the city's credit quality" and made clear the city's "responsibility to fund the promised pension benefits."

Caveman's best friends? Preserved Ice Age puppies awe scientists

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 09:23 AM PDT

Moscow (AFP) - The hunters searching for mammoth tusks were drawn to the steep riverbank by a deposit of ancient bones. To their astonishment, they discovered an Ice Age puppy's snout peeking out from the permafrost.

Five years later, a pair of puppies perfectly preserved in Russia's far northeast region of Yakutia and dating back 12,460 years has mobilised scientists across the world.

"To find a carnivorous mammal intact with skin, fur and internal organs -- this has never happened before in history," said Sergei Fyodorov, head of exhibitions at the Mammoth Museum of the North-Eastern Federal University in the regional capital of Yakutsk.

And the discovery could contribute to the lively scientific debate over the origin of domesticated dogs.

When the hunters stumbled on the first frozen pup in 2011, they alerted Fyodorov who immediately flew out to the remote Arctic tundra, about 4,700 kilometres (2,900 miles) from Moscow and only 130 kilometres from the Laptev Sea, which borders the Arctic Ocean.

Last year he returned for a more thorough look and found the second puppy close to the same spot, farther down the slope. Both had died when they were about three months old.

ICYMI: On the Wrong Side in Maryland

Editorial Board – "Practically the only Marylanders who overwhelmingly oppose Mr. Hogan's blueprint are Democrats in the General Assembly."
The Washington Post
Editorial Board
March 27, 2016

"With two weeks remaining in Maryland's three-month legislative session, Democratic lawmakers in Annapolis have stopped just short of extending a Bronx cheer to Gov. Larry Hogan's proposal for nonpartisan redistricting reform.

"Never mind that the plan from Mr. Hogan, a Republican, is enormously popular with state residents. It foresees a constitutional amendment that would shift control of the redistricting process from self-interested elected lawmakers, who treat it exclusively as an incumbent-protection racket. In its place would be established an independent, nine-member panel that would draw district voting maps without regard to voting history or partisan leanings.

"According to a recent Goucher College poll, that idea enjoys deep and wide support in Maryland. It is favored by large majorities of Democrats and Republicans; men and women; blacks and whites; young and old. Indeed, almost no other issue in the state elicits such one-sidedly favorable reaction. Practically the only Marylanders who overwhelmingly oppose Mr. Hogan's blueprint are Democrats in the General Assembly.

"Small wonder. Democrats enjoy a 2-to-1 advantage in voter registration in Maryland, but they have leveraged their control of the legislature into a heavily gerrymandered map that has yielded a congressional delegation of seven Democrats and one Republican. The state's tortuous political cartography includes the shambolic 3rd Congressional District — likened in shape to a 'broken-winged pterodactyl' by a federal judge — which slices from Baltimore to Montgomery County in the course of assembling its unassailable Democratic majority. …

"Some say they might entertain some version of reform, but only if it were in tandem with Virginia, whose Democratic governor and Republican-dominated legislature make it Maryland's political mirror image. …

"In the real world, the chances of Annapolis Democrats coordinating such a step with Richmond Republicans are infinitesimal. Maryland House Speaker Michael E. Busch (D-Anne Arundel) said he'd float the idea with GOP counterparts in Virginia, but no one's holding their breath for a Kumbaya moment.

"In fact, the idea of a two-state solution is a cop-out, a cheap excuse for lawmakers who have refused to take action that is clearly in their constituents' best interests. In Virginia, gerrymandering has resulted in state legislative districts so grotesquely tilted that the vast majority of incumbents have no serious challengers. In Maryland, real democracy in state legislative races has been similarly degraded.

"The continued inaction is an affront to democracy that distorts and subverts the popular will. Both Mr. Hogan and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, have called for reform. By ignoring those calls, legislators demonstrate their contempt for voters."

SPD: Suspicious Death Investigation

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 08:43 AM PDT

Salisbury Police initiate an investigation into the suspicious death of a 50 year-old male during the late afternoon hours of hours of March 28, 2016.

On March 28, 2016 at approximately 5:15 p.m., Salisbury Police Officers were conducting proactive patrol checks in the area of the 900 block of Mabel Avenue. Officers noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in a dirt parking lot next to an abandoned building within the 900 block of Mabel Avenue. Upon further investigation, the vehicle was determined to be un-occupied, and appeared to be covered in an unknown chemical which emitted a strong, noxious odor. Officers furthered their investigation and determined the owner of the vehicle to reside in the 600 block of Liberty Street. Officers then responded to the 600 block of Liberty Street in an effort to locate the owner of the vehicle.

Upon locating the residence, officers knocked on the door, but did not receive an answer. With closer inspection into the residence, officers were able to observe a male subject laying on the floor. Officers made entry into the residence in an effort to provide emergency first aid to the male subject. Once inside, officers were quickly overcome by the fumes from an unknown chemical. Officers exited the residence and requested the assistance of the Salisbury Fire Department. Fire department personnel arrived at the residence and began a de-contamination process of the officers who had been exposed to the fumes.

The body of the 50 year old male was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical examiner for further examination and to determine a cause of death. At this time the detectives and emergency medical personnel are attempting to identify the chemical that was found in the residence and the vehicle. The chemical has been contained to the residence and the vehicle, and does not appear to pose any threat to the neighboring residences or businesses.

Salisbury Police are being assisted by the Salisbury Fire Department, Parsonsburg Fire Department,
Pittsville Fire Department, Delaware Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Department of Environment
and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Navy Corruption Scandal Results In Prison Time For Highest-Ranking Officer Yet

A Navy captain has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for his involvement in a bribery scandal.

Capt. Daniel Dusek, the former deputy director of operations for the Navy's 7th Fleet, pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit bribery, admitting he traded classified information for luxury gifts and access to prostitutes. He was sentenced to 46 months on Friday.

He's the highest-ranking officer who has faced charges for his involvement in the scandal. Two admirals had theiraccess to classified material suspended several years ago, over alleged connections to the scandal. To this day, both admirals — one of whom is the Navy's intelligence chief — are blocked from viewing classified documents.

The scandal in question centers on foreign defense contractor Leonard Glenn Francis, or "Fat Leonard."

The Game Within the Game

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PDT

While the Republican presidential candidates are experiencing a small voting respite – the next GOP primaries are April 5th and 19th (Wisconsin and New York, respectively) – the so-called "game within the game" is getting underway as recent developments in Louisiana illustrate.

The phrase refers to the complicated process of actually choosing individuals to fill the various delegate slots that are awarded to the respective candidates under Republican National Committee allocation procedure. It is here where Sen. Ted Cruz may have a distinct advantage.

Coming from the Louisiana state Republican convention, a similar venue where the respective 56 voting entities ratify their official national delegate slates, the fluid process could actually send a pro-Cruz delegation to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland even though more voters supported Donald Trump.

On March 5th, Mr. Trump polled 41.4% of the statewide vote versus Sen. Cruz's 37.8%. Based upon the state's delegate apportionment formula that allows candidates to earn a portion of the 25 at-large bound delegates if they exceed 20% of the statewide vote, Trump received 13 votes to Cruz's twelve.

The six congressional districts then award and additional 18 delegates to the candidates, three per each seat. Those are awarded proportionately based upon district popular vote with no percentage threshold. Looking at the six districts, Cruz earned six congressional district delegate votes, Trump five, and Sen. Marco Rubio, five. An additional five, including the three Republican National Committee delegates that each state receives, are allowed an uncommitted designation.

Since Sen. Rubio departed from the race, his five delegates, under Louisiana law and state party procedure, become free agents. In most places the delegates belong to the candidate earning the votes until that individual releases them, but Louisiana does not follow that practice.

Based upon the individuals elected as Rubio delegates through the state party rules selection process, it appears that Cruz could gain all five of the Rubio delegate slots and potentially a majority of the uncommitted convention voters. By the time the national convention begins on July 18th, it's possible that Sen. Cruz could actually carry a majority of the 46 Louisiana delegates even though he "lost" the state.

Therefore, instead of the current 18-18-5-5 (Trump, Cruz, Rubio, Uncommitted) split, Cruz could conceivably carry a first ballot 28-18 advantage, and possibly more on subsequent roll calls if Trump fails to win a first ballot nomination.

The Trump campaign in unconventional in many ways, but particularly so the candidate's desire to run as the consummate outsider. Considering that delegate selection is very much an insider's game within often unique and complex individual party systems, it is here where the Trump organization may have a serious problem.

Thus, securing a first ballot victory through the primary and caucus schedule is their top priority. Because all but six of the 56 voting entities bound their delegates on the first ballot, reaching the 1,237 committed delegate votes when the primaries and caucuses on June 7th will insure the nomination. Trump will have to secure approximately 55% of the remaining delegates in order to clinch the nomination. So far, his delegate win percentage is 47.6%.

Obama calls on journalists to hold candidates accountable

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 07:45 AM PDT

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Tuesday again bemoaned the political environment surrounding this year's presidential elections and called on journalists to hold candidates and themselves to a higher standard.

Obama spoke at the presentation of the Toner Prize, named for Robin Toner, the first woman to be national political correspondent for The New York Times. During her nearly 25 years there, Toner covered five presidential campaigns. She passed away in 2008.

Obama said the No. 1 question he gets when traveling the world is "What is happening in America?" He said it's because people abroad understand America is the place where you "can't afford completely crazy politics," and they care about the most powerful nation on earth functioning effectively.

"We are all invested in making this system work. We are all responsible for its success, and it's not just for the United States that this matters, it matters for the planet," Obama said.

Holy War in Pakistan

Tragedy struck in Pakistan yesterday when terrorists targeted Chrisitans celebrating Easter Sunday. As Al Jazeera reports:

Families of the victims killed in a massive suicide bombing targeting Pakistani Christians in Lahore have started burying their relatives as a nationwide three-day mourning period began.

The funerals on Monday followed the attack at a park in Pakistan's second largest city a day earlier, aimed at killing members of the Christian minority gathered on Easter Sunday.

At least 70 people were killed, with many having succumbed to their wounds on Monday. More than 300 were wounded, officials said. Most victims were women and children.

The bombing was claimed by a breakaway Taliban faction, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, that has before publicly supported the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.

Even though Sunday's bombing targeted mainly Christians, most of those killed in Lahore were Muslims, who were also in the park on Easter Sunday.

Of the dead, at least 14 have been identified as Christians, according to Lahore Police Superintendent Mohammed Iqbal. Another 12 bodies have not yet been identified, he said.

The 2.5 million Christians in Pakistan. They're discriminated against in the state's Islamic constitution, and they're terrorized under religious blasphemy laws that often serve as a front for the worst kind of repression. Those Muslims who want to come here and seek religious acceptance would do well to offer the same in their own countries.

The Ted Cruz Sex Scandal: Marco Rubio Did It

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 07:15 AM PDT

THE TRUTH COMES OUT …

The mushrooming sex scandal involving U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas took an interesting turn when it was alleged that supporters of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida were the ones really responsible for leaking the smear … albeit unsuccessfully.

According to reporters Asawin Suebsaeng and Betsy Woodruff of The Daily Beast, "a half-dozen GOP operatives and media figures (say) that Cruz's opponents have been pushing charges of adultery for at least six months now – and that allies of former GOP presidential hopeful Marco Rubio were involved in spreading the smears."

Sound familiar?

It should. After all, Rubio's team was integral in spreading similar dirt on S.C. governor Nikki Haley back in 2010.

Clinton snubbed cybersecurity briefing at State Department

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 06:45 AM PDT

Hillary Clinton skipped a special 2011 briefing on cybersecurity that members of her staff at the State Department organized specifically for her, according to information revealed Friday.

Julia Frifield, a staffer at the department, divulged the information to Congress last month. A March 3 letter from the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, addressed to Secretary of State John Kerry, described the revelation.

"On February 18, 2016, Ms. Julia Frifield, the Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs, sent us that classified PowerPoint presentation used in the cybersecurity briefing, along with an unclassified cover letter," states the letter authored by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.

"The unclassified cover letter noted that 'although the PowerPoint indicated the briefing was for former Secretary Clinton, we understand from the testimony of the briefers, that she was not in attendance,'" Grassley adds.

Navy Veteran Burns Himself Alive Outside VA Clinic

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 06:38 AM PDT

51-year-old Charles R. Ingram III, a seven-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, doused himself with gasoline and set himself ablaze outside a VA clinic on Saturday, March 19, for reasons as yet unclear.

Although he was swiftly airlifted to Temple Burn Center in Philadelphia for treatment, he died of his injuries that night. The Press of Atlantic City reports that, according to Police Chief Paul Newman, Ingram did not leave a note explaining his actions.

However, Atlantic County Veterans Affairs Director Bob Frolow said the location of the suicide sent a message that should not be ignored: "At the very least, his actions were an expression of need… It's a shame and sign of desperation and need. This might open a window on that need."

Frolow pointed out that the clinic was closed at the time of Ingram's Saturday suicide, as it only offers daytime hours Monday through Friday. He described this as a "hardship for many who cannot get there during work hours."

"More than ever, we are determined – no, emboldened – to carry on our quest to provide every veteran with the health care they need, when they need it and where they need it," said veterans' advocate Marco Polo Smigliani, of Ingram's home Egg Harbor Township. "Hearts are deeply saddened today, and our mission continues so that one among us will not have died in vain."

Campaign to Ban Islamic Veil at Public Institutions in Egypt Picks Up Steam

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 06:37 AM PDT

Cairo (CNSNews.com) – A newly-launched campaign to ban the Islamic veil in public institutions in Egypt has received a boost with the drafting in parliament of a law on the matter for discussion.

The campaign, which seeks a ban on the full face veil, or niqab, at schools, universities, hospitals and government departments, has drawn sharp criticism from some clerics, who argue that wearing the veil shows high moral standards and that banning it would violate personal freedom.

Others counter that the campaign is not attacking Islam, contending that wearing the niqab is not an Islamic obligation.

The niqab covers a women's entire face except for the eyes. It's not common in Egypt but has been here for centuries.

Amna Nossier, professor of comparative jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University said earlier this month Al-Azhar fully supports the ban because wearing the niqab was never a requirement of Islam. She claimed wearing the veil was in fact a Jewish tradition that appeared in the Arabian peninsula long before Islam, and that the Qur'an does not call for its use.

Subject: 20 ICE Managers Complete Sensitivity Training Course at LA's Museum of Tolerance

(CNSNews.com) - The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) says 20 of its "high-level" managers have just completed a training program at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, making ICE the first federal law enforcement agency to partner with the museum on training of this type.

The intensive, three-day course focused on "promoting greater cultural awareness" among members of ICE's leadership team.

"There's a current exhibit at the Museum of Tolerance that asks visitors to 'change the way you see and see the way you change,'" said ICE Director Sarah R. SaldaƱa. "That's really the crux of what we're seeking to accomplish through this joint initiative. We want ICE's leaders to be agents of change, taking what they learn in this training and using it to transform the way they tackle the daily challenges they face in the workplace."

The course, using the museum's interactive exhibits, challenges participants to "recognize their own inherent cultural biases and identify ways to develop progressive leadership practices in their respective programs," the news release said.

Living With Terrorists and Their Sympathizers

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 06:07 AM PDT

The latest Islamist terror attack in Brussels reveals an uncomfortable reality European leaders don't want to face: There are parallel societies living side by side in many EU nations. One embraces Western culture and traditions. The other thoroughly rejects them.

"It was only fitting … that when police arrested the suspected terrorist Salah Abdeslam in the gritty Molenbeek neighborhood of Brussels late last week, across town, European Union leaders were meeting at the plush EU Commission headquarters to discuss the immigration crisis that bedevils Europe," writes Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez. "Fitting because the Molenbeek neighborhood represents the division and separation that exist in European society, and why there is a fear that migrants arriving in Europe in their hundreds of thousands could find in such places networks ready to radicalize those migrants."

Could find? They already have. Salah Abdeslam, the alleged mastermind of last year's carnage in Paris was traced back to Molenbeek, and angry local residents tossed bottles and rocks at police when they arrested the neighborhood's "hero." That outburst underscored another disturbing reality, as in local press reports stating the "whole neighborhood" knew where Abdeslam was hiding — and did absolutely nothing to help authorities find him.

Yet if truth be told..

Pregnant And Addicted: The Tough Road To Family Health

Amanda Hensley started abusing prescription painkillers when she was just a teenager. For years, she managed to function and hold down jobs. She even quit opioids for a while when she was pregnant with her now 4-year-old son. But she relapsed.

Hensley says she preferred drugs like Percocet and morphine, but opted for heroin when she was short on cash.

By the time she discovered she was pregnant last year, she couldn't quit.

"It was just one thing after another, you know — I was sick with morning sickness or sick from using," says Hensley, who is 25 and lives in Cleveland. "Either I was puking from morning sickness or I was puking from being high. That's kind of how I was able to hide it for a while."

Hensley says she was ashamed and hurt, and she wanted to stop using but didn't know how. She had friends who would help her find drugs — even after they found out she was pregnant.

Finding help to get clean and protect her child proved much more difficult.
