Homeless man sues Honolulu cops for forcing him to lick a URINAL instead of going to jail

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 07:30 PM PST

A homeless man is suing two Honolulu cops for forcing him to lick a urinal instead of going to jail.

Samuel Ingall, 37, has filed the suit against the Honolulu Police Department and the city after the incident in January 2018.

The homeless man was seeking shelter in the restroom when one of the officers John Rabago told him in an 'aggressive tone' that the 'only way he could avoid arrest was by licking the urinal in the bathroom,' according to the lawsuit filed last week.

The other officer, Reginald Ramones, stood in the doorway, propping open the door, then closed it so they wouldn't be caught on surveillance, the lawsuit said.

MSNBC Contributor: 'The Iowa Caucus Is Essentially the Perfect Example of Systemic Racism'

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 07:00 PM PST

MSNBC Political Analyst Zerlina Maxwell blasted the Iowa Caucus as the "perfect example of systemic racism" in the aftermath of the state's Democratic party disastrous handling of Monday's voting, which the results still have not been released.

Maxwell and the MSNBC panel was discussing the low turnout for the caucuses across the state. Entrance polling showed 35% of Iowan voters were caucusing for the first time, as opposed to 44% in 2016.

"Democrats have long leaned on President Trump being a motivator for voters. Those number don't bear that out. Should that concern Democrats?" host Craig Melvin asked.

Tennessee Lawmakers Move to End Gov. Bill Lee’s Resettling More Refugees

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 04:30 PM PST

A group of Tennessee lawmakers is moving forward with legislation to end Republican Governor Bill Lee's authority over refugee resettlement across the state.

For Fiscal Year 2020, President Donald Trump will continue cutting refugee admissions by reducing former President Barack Obama's refugee inflow by at least 80 percent. This reduction would mean a maximum of 18,000 refugees can be resettled in the U.S. between October 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020. This is merely a numerical limit and not a goal federal officials are supposed to reach.

Coupled with the refugee reduction, Trump signed an executive order that gives localities, counties, and states veto power over whether they want to resettle refugees in their communities. For now, a Clinton-appointed judge has blocked implementation of the executive order.

'Disingenuous': AOC rebukes Trump for honoring 'virulent racist' Rush Limbaugh with Medal of Freedom

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted President Trump's decision to award Rush Limbaugh with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Trump granted the honor to the longtime conservative radio host on Tuesday night during his State of the Union address — just one day after Limbaugh revealed he had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. The president called Limbaugh "a special man, beloved by millions of Americans," and then had first lady Melania Trump present him with the award.

Ocasio-Cortez, who decided to skip the president's speech before both chambers of Congress, addressed Limbaugh's honor during an Instagram Live video.

In an angry America, a new remedy emerges: Compassion

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 03:30 PM PST

As the head of a big-city hospital's emergency department, Susan O'Mara has always focused on providing quick answers to people in crisis: A relative desperate for information. An injured person facing a very long wait. A colleague exhausted from dealing with fed-up patients. But until a special training a few months ago, O'Mara didn't consider whether there were ways to be more compassionate in her response.

The training taught the doctor to pause and listen, and not jump to fix or respond defensively if an angry patient is on the offense. She said it has helped her focus better and find a deeper well of sympathy, even as she deals with trying situations at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the nation's capital.

"You want to get patients from Point A to Point B with compassion, and also not internalize and feel badly yourself," she said. "To approach someone who is sad, scared, angry - to approach someone who is angry with compassion is the Holy Grail of emergency medicine."

Defined as the ability to notice suffering (in ourselves and others) and then the desire to take action to alleviate it, "compassion" has become the buzzword for an angry nation. It is increasingly being held up by neuroscientists, corporations, business schools and psychologists as a concrete, powerful health strategy - and a successful business model.

Universities have opened centers devoted to compassion. Marianne Williamson and Cory Booker talked about it as an urgent American need during their presidential campaigns. Job networker LinkedIn and wealth manager Brighton Jones both recently created a director of compassion position.

Experts say this shift is the result of new research showing compassion's impact, as well as an urgent desire to address rising rates of depression and anxiety among young people, and a steep climb of rates of suicide among all ages.

Kindergarten Student’s Project Gets Police Support

SALISBURY – A student's efforts to collect 100 pictures for a class assignment received the support of several law enforcement agencies.

In recent weeks, Rhett Staples, a kindergarten student at Asbury Child Development Center in Salisbury, has been on a mission to complete a class project.

The assignment – to bring in 100 of something for the 100th day of school – was made more challenging when Rhett decided he wanted to take 100 pictures of himself with law enforcement personnel and display them on a "thin blue line" flag.

"For the 100th day of school they are supposed to bring in project that represents 100 of something …," Kristin Staples, Rhett's mother, said. "So he wanted to do 100 pictures with police officers."

Harris Statement on Senate Acquittal of President Trump

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) made the following statement regarding the Senate vote to acquit President Trump.

"It's about time that this sadly partisan frivolous impeachment effort ended - and Congress can once again turn their attention to important matters facing America, like drug prices, healthcare costs, border security, and keeping our economy going. Thank goodness the Senate brought this to an end - and too bad the House proceeded along partisan lines to attempt to undo the last election and to interfere with the ability of the American people to make their choice at the polls in 10 short months. The clear majority voting against removal in the Senate today shows just how frivolous this impeachment effort was."

Cervical Cancer Could Be Wiped out Within Years

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 01:30 PM PST

Vaccination and screening could nearly wipe out cervical cancer in North America in the next 20 years and rid the world of the disease within the next century, researchers say.

In a new study, the researchers assessed the potential impacts of the World Health Organization's (WHO) draft strategy for cervical cancer elimination, which calls for 90% of girls to be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) by 2030.

HPV causes most cervical cancer cases.

The WHO plan also calls for 70% of women to be screened for cervical cancer once or twice in their lifetime, and for 90% of women with precancerous lesions or cervical cancer to receive appropriate treatment.

Bill Would Allow EpiPens In Some Maryland Food Service Establishments

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 01:00 PM PST

OCEAN CITY — While the legislation makes no specific reference to a tragic incident in late October that claimed the life of one of the resort's young pillars of the community, a bill was introduced in the General Assembly this week allowing food-service operations to administer auto-injectable epinephrine, or EpiPens, in the event of an emergency.

In late October, local businessman Chris Trimper suffered an extreme allergic reaction during a fundraising reception at the food service operation in the Ocean Downs Casino and did not survive. Trimper was administered an EpiPen at the scene when paramedics arrived, but continued to suffer seizures and did not survive.

Such tragedies are often followed by what-ifs as mourners attempt to come to grips with a loss. In the wake of Trimper's passage in October, resort officials began to question if the outcome might have been different if the restaurant stored and maintained EpiPens and had staff on hand trained in their usage. Research confirmed Maryland is one of just 14 states that currently do not allow private entities to obtain, store and utilize EpiPens during emergency situations.

Romney made public his decision two hours before the Senate will vote on two articles charging Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The senator will only vote to convict on the first article, saying he will vote to acquit the president of the obstruction charge.

Romney said he believes the president violated the power of his office by asking a foreign government, Ukraine, to investigate a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.

Giuliani: Trump should '100%' investigate Biden after Senate acquittal

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 09:30 AM PST

Rudy Giuliani wants President Trump to move ahead with an investigation into his political rival Joe Biden after he is likely to be acquitted by the Senate.

"Absolutely; 100%," Giuliani, who is Trump's personal lawyer, told NPR. "I would have no problem with him doing it. In fact, I'd have a problem with him not doing it. I think he would be saying that Joe Biden can get away with selling out the United States, making us a fool in the Ukraine."

Giuliani, 75, was a central figure in the events that led to Trump's impeachment on charges of obstruction of Congress and abuse of his office in December. The former New York City mayor was part of a pressure campaign to get Ukraine to investigate the former vice president and his son Hunter, who was on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.

"We will never let socialism destroy American healthcare," Trump said in his address Tuesday night.

Trump is running against Democrats who propose "Medicare for all" plans, including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, which would enroll everyone in the United States in a government healthcare plan. Trump, vulnerable on the issue of healthcare otherwise, has sought to cast himself as the defender of the status quo against such overhauls.

Virginia legislature kills Northam gun bill

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 09:00 AM PST

The Senate Judiciary Committee of the Virginia legislature rejected a bill introduced by Gov. Ralph Northam that would have made allowing a gun to fall into the hands of a child a felony.

As drafted, Northam's bill would have mandated that anyone who "recklessly leave[s] a loaded, unsecured firearm" in a place where it could be accessed by a child be charged with a felony. Current Virginia law charges people found responsible in such situations with a misdemeanor.

"This bill will keep children safe from loaded, unsecured firearms. Like Gov. Northam's other commonsense gun safety measures, it is something that everyone — including responsible gun owners — should support," the governor's spokeswoman said in a statement.

A Plague Of ‘Biblical Proportions’ Is Destroying Crops Across The Middle East And Africa

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 08:30 AM PST

What we are witnessing in east Africa and across much of the Middle East right now is hard to believe. 360 billion locusts are eating everything in sight, and UN officials are warning that this plague of "Biblical proportions" could get many times worse over the next several months. Desert locusts can travel up to 93 miles a day, and each adult can consume the equivalent of its own weight in food every 24 hours. These voracious little creatures are traveling in absolutely colossal swarms that are up to 40 miles wide, and they continue to push into new areas. If urgent action is not taken on a massive scale, millions upon millions of people could soon have next to nothing to eat.

I have previously written about the horrors that this plague is causing in east Africa, but many people don't realize that this plague is devastating crops throughout the Middle East as well.

In fact, the government of Pakistan just declared a national emergency because of these locusts…

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) made the following statement regarding President Trump's State of the Union Address this evening:
"I'm glad the President focused on issues important to the American people as well as his accomplishments so far in his first term in office. Congress should now act with the President on issues such as the high cost of prescription drugs, the high cost of healthcare, border security, and keeping our very strong economy going. I hope the House Majority and the Senate Minority are willing to work across the aisle in a spirit of unity with the President and the rest of Congress on these important issues."

Wind Turbine Blades Can’t Be Recycled, So They’re Piling Up In Landfills

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 07:51 AM PST

Companies are searching for ways to deal with the tens of thousands of blades that have reached the end of their lives.

A wind turbine's blades can be longer than a Boeing 747 wing, so at the end of their lifespan they can't just be hauled away. First, you need to saw through the lissome fiberglass using a diamond-encrusted industrial saw to create three pieces small enough to be strapped to a tractor-trailer.

The municipal landfill in Casper, Wyoming, is the final resting place of 870 blades whose days making renewable energy have come to end. The severed fragments look like bleached whale bones nestled against one another.

"That's the end of it for this winter," said waste technician Michael Bratvold, watching a bulldozer bury them forever in sand. "We'll get the rest when the weather breaks this spring."

Tens of thousands of aging blades are coming down from steel towers around the world and most have nowhere to go but landfills. In the U.S. alone, about 8,000 will be removed in each of the next four years. Europe, which has been dealing with the problem longer, has about 3,800 coming down annually through at least 2022, according to BloombergNEF. It's going to get worse: Most were built more than a decade ago, when installations were less than a fifth of what they are now.

Van Buren: Dems Don't Realize How Much Impeachment Hurts Them

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 06:15 AM PST

We are watching the pathetic ending to one of the most pathetic periods in American politics. All the smoking guns have been firing blanks.

Following one of the most childish tantrums of denial ever recorded, Democrats set about destroying the Trump presidency in its crib; a WaPo headline from January 20, 2017 – Inauguration Day itself – exclaimed "The Campaign to Impeach President Trump has Begun." The opening gambit was going to be Emoluments, including rent paid by the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China for its space in Trump Tower in New York.

After three years, it looks like that attempt finally reached its end game, failure, one gray afternoon. On Friday the Senate brought impeachment proceedings to their effective conclusion, declaring the witnesses already called before the House were to be the last. The formal vote to acquit Trump is scheduled as an anti-climax for Wednesday.

Earlier in the evening, after Trump made his way up to the podium, the president appeared to ignore Pelosi's offer of a handshake, leading her to smirk and shrug.

Why the Left Really Wants to Kill America

Posted: 05 Feb 2020 04:00 AM PST

The century-long attempt to kill capitalism in America gained a dramatic head of steam in the 1960s with the rapid ascendency of progressivism, a Marxist movement that would quietly seize control of the Democratic Party over the last half-century.

Which was something different. For most of America's 244-year history, the dominant political parties that evolved had a common goal constantly working to improve the country they both loved. In the 1860s, a Republican president went to war to end slavery. A century later, a Democratic president launched another well-intentioned war, a war on poverty. Democrats and Republicans alike largely saw their country as a force for good, both at home and abroad. Beginning in the 1960s, that widely- shared view began to show cracks as the progressive movement began tightening its grip on the modern Democratic Party. Democrat icons of the 1960s -- Adlai Stevenson, Henry "Scoop" Jackson, Sam Nunn, Hubert Humphrey and JFK, to name a few -- were genuine patriots who loved their country, a sentiment that was shared by a large majority of that era's rank and file Democrats. Such is no longer the case. Here are four ways Democrats are looking to end the idea of America altogether:

Killing America by replacing patriotism with socialism
