The Mormon Church kept their $100BILLION investment fund a secret over fears that it would discourage members from tithing as a whistleblower claims they misused their finances

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 07:30 PM PST

Officials of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints kept the amount of their $100billion investment reserves a secret in case public knowledge of their massive wealth might discourage members from tithing.

The Wall Street Journal reports that word of the Mormon Church's stockpile came after a whistleblower complained to the Internal Revenue Service that the fund, named Ensign Peak Advisors, had collected billions.

'Paying tithing is more of a sense of commitment than it is the church needing the money,' Roger Clarke, the head of Ensign Peak said.

'So they never wanted to be in a position where people felt like, you know, they shouldn't make a contribution.'

U.S. Charges Four Chinese Military Officers in Equifax Data Breach

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 07:00 PM PST

China's military was behind the largest database hacking attack in U.S. history, the Justice Department said Monday.

Prosecutors charged four members of a secretive electronic-espionage branch of the People's Liberation Army with breaking into the networks of the Equifax credit reporting agency and stealing the personal information of 145 million Americans.

"This was a deliberate and sweeping intrusion into the private information of the American people," said Attorney General William P. Barr, who made the announcement. "Today, we hold PLA hackers accountable for their criminal actions, and we remind the Chinese government that we have the capability to remove the Internet's cloak of anonymity and find the hackers that nation repeatedly deploys against us. "

The hackers successfully stole names, Social Security numbers and other personal information stored in the company's databases. The four — members of the People's Liberation Army, an arm of the Chinese military — are also accused of stealing the company's trade secrets, law enforcement officials said.

"Unfortunately, the Equifax hack fits a disturbing and unacceptable pattern of state-sponsored computer intrusions and thefts by China and its citizens that have targeted personally identifiable information, trade secrets, and other confidential information," Barr said.

The toxic feminism of AOC and Pelosi doesn't represent young women like me

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 06:30 PM PST

Toxic feminism made its mark on this year's State of the Union, thanks to the Democrats.

Some Democrats wore white in protest, meant to evoke memories of the suffragettes as they showed off their "Equal Rights Amendment Yes" buttons. Meanwhile, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez refused to attend. Topping it all off, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi openly shredded her copy of the State of the Union address. These are just a few of the distasteful actions I witnessed from the feminist Left as I watched the speech.

As President Trump commended a record-low female unemployment rate, two single mothers, a young girl who has the opportunity to choose her school, and a paid family leave program, many of the supposed feminists Democrats in attendance offered up little to no positive reaction. 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in America. Why aren't these women celebrating the wonderful strides they've made?

What to Do After You Shoot Someone in Self Defense

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 06:00 PM PST

It is the end of a long day. You and your wife tucked your children in and are heading to bed. As you turn off the lights you hear a sound you do not recognize. When you go to investigate, you discover a broken window. An intruder is in your home. Fearing for your safety and the safety of your family, you prepare to defend yourself. You know you have your right to defend your family and your home. You grab your firearm and confront the intruder at gunpoint. The intruder draws a weapon and turns to attack. You pull the trigger and hit your mark. The intruder falls to the ground seriously injured and likely dying.

The immediate threat is over, but your emotions are running high and adrenalin is pumping through your body. You and your family are safe, but what do you do next? Do you flee from your residence? Do you start collecting evidence? Do you move the body? Do you call the police?

What you do after shooting someone in self-defense can determine what legal consequences will follow. There are several things you should do and other things you should not do if you find yourself in this situation.

Student suspended at SUNY-ESF after racist graffiti found in dorm, college says

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 05:30 PM PST

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A student has been suspended at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry after racist graffiti was found on two whiteboards at one of the college's dormitories, according to a statement by the college.

The student was also "removed from the campus" while the incident is investigated, SUNY-ESF interim president Dave Amberg said in a statement.

The graffiti was posted to social media, Amberg said.

The graffiti found at SUNY-ESF, which is located next to Syracuse University, was the first bias-related incident the school has reported since racist graffiti was found at SU in November. SU has reported 25 bias-related incidents since Nov. 7, according to The Daily Orange, the school's student newspaper.

Rep. Ilhan Omar promotes call for GI Bill to apply to all Americans

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 04:30 PM PST

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is taking heat for sharing an article calling for the G.I. Bill -- legislation that pays for American service members' higher education -- to apply to all U.S. citizens.

The story, written by Marine and Iraq veteran Will Fischer, who used the G.I. Bill's benefits to pay for his college education, argues that the benefits of paying for veterans' education have far outweighed the costs -- and covering all Americans' tuition would benefit not only those avoiding student debt but the economy as a whole.

"Imagine what it would do for our country and those who live here if we were to take the ethos behind the original G.I. Bill and apply it to everybody—canceling all student debt and making public colleges, universities, and vocational schools tuition-free," Omar tweeted, quoting the AlterNet story.

But Omar was quickly criticized for advocating such a massive expansion.

OPPOSE HB388, HB403/SB903, & HB677/SB850 - NO SANCTUARY STATE

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 04:01 PM PST

Dear Members of The Maryland General Assembly,

The following bills: HB388, HB403/SB903, & HB667/SB850 are up for consideration this legislative session, and if passed, would turn Maryland into a sanctuary state.

HB388 prohibits MD law enforcement officers from making immigration status inquiries about lawfully arrested individuals or individuals who have served a sentence in MD, from honoring an ICE detainer warrant for these individuals, or transferring these individuals to any federal immigration authorities without an MD judicial warrant.

HB403/SB903 would block federal immigration authorities from accessing public schools, hospitals, and courthouses.

HB677/SB850 which bans private entities from receiving MD state government contracts to house immigration detainees, and to terminate any such existing contracts by 10/01/2021.

If any of these bills should come before you for a vote, I urge that you oppose and vote against any measures that would lead to Maryland becoming a sanctuary state.

Chinese Ambassador Asked If Coronavirus Came From Biological Warfare Program

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 03:00 PM PST

The Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, appeared to not deny that the coronavirus came from China's biological warfare program on Sunday and instead suggested that the deadly virus could have come from a military lab in the U.S.

Tiankai made the remarks on CBS News' "Face The Nation" in response to China's struggle to stop the coronavirus from continuing to spread. It has now infected at least 37,198 and killed at least 811 in China.

"This week, Senator Tom Cotton, who sits on the Senate Intelligence and Armed Services Committee, suggested that the virus may have come from China's biological warfare program," CBS News' Margaret Brennan said. "That's an extraordinary charge. How do you respond to that?"

Yes, Human Trafficking is on the Shore: A Chat with For All Seasons’ Katharine Petzold

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 02:00 PM PST

It's typically hard for most Eastern Shore residents to know that human trafficking is alive and growing in their backyard. Beyond the false narrative that this inhumane treatment of adults and children is an urban phenomenon in the United States, the fact remains that these crimes are tough to see even if they are taking place in broad daylight.

Some of these victims are hidden behind locked doors in brothels and factories. But in other cases, they are interacting with community members on a daily basis. In the labor market, it can be found agricultural work, particularly with seasonal fisheries and crab processing as well as construction, nail salons, hospitality industries, and domestic work. With the sex trade, it is showing up locally on online, secret brothels, and "massage parlors" as well as truck stops, private homes, or on the street.

That is one of the many challenges that For All Seasons, the Mid-Shore's behavioral health center, face as they increase their work to identify and rescue victims in the region. And part of that work is ensuring that members of the health and education professional community understand the signs of human trafficking in a variety of different environments.

An Al Qaeda Leader Came to America as a Refugee, And Applied for Disability for Bullet Wounds

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 01:30 PM PST

After engaging in terrorism in Iraq, an Al Qaeda leader came to America as a refugee and applied for Social Security disability benefits because his "injuries" in Iraq had made it too hard for him to work.

In 2006, Ali Yousif Ahmed Al-Nouri was the Emir of an Al Qaeda terrorist group in Fallujah. The Iraqi city was the scene of brutal battles between Al Qaeda and America. It was where American soldiers had suffered the most casualties in any battle since the Vietnam War. Despite multiple defeats, Al Qaeda remained deeply entrenched in the city and was even able to seize a number of neighborhoods in 2014.

By then, Al-Nouri was living in Arizona.

Only 2 years after being the Emir of an Al Qaeda group, Al-Nouri had traded the deserts of Al-Anbar for the deserts of the Southwest. How was an Al Qaeda leader able to move to the United States?

Easy. He claimed to be a refugee from Al Qaeda.

Comptroller Announces First-in-the-Nation Prohibition on Sales of Disposable Flavored E-Cigarettes

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 01:00 PM PST

FDA action fails to close loophole on disposable
products marketed to kids with flavors like Mango Bomb, Berry Gelato and O.M.G.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (February 10, 2020) - Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced that his Field Enforcement Division (FED) is taking a first-in-the-nation approach to prohibiting the sale of certain Electronic Smoking Devices (ESDs) marketed towards kids.

"Today, in addition to the FDA's prohibition of flavored e-cigarette cartridges, I have directed our enforcement agents to take more aggressive action by prohibiting the sale of disposable ESDs with flavors other than tobacco or menthol," Comptroller Franchot said. "As the state's tobacco regulator, it's my legal and moral responsibility to protect consumers, especially children, from the hazardous substances contained in these unauthorized products."

Last October, the Comptroller created the e-facts Task Force on Electronic Smoking Devices to learn more about the industry and to consider what regulatory and legislative action should be taken. The task force has met three times and will be holding its final session on February 17 to weigh recommendations.

"In recent months, we've heard troubling reports of health-related issues, including deaths, that have been directly attributable to the use of ESDs," Franchot said. "At the same time, the use of ESDs among teens has skyrocketed. I will not stand idly by letting kids get addicted to nicotine and hurt by these unregulated products that are marketed directly towards them."

Last month, the FDA announced enforcement actions against "illegally marketed" ESD products – particularly, "flavored, cartridge-based [ESD] product[s]," which took effect on February 6.

However, flavored disposable e-cigarettes, which are growing in popularity among youngsters, are not covered under the FDA prohibition – a loophole that precipitated the Comptroller's announcement today. The FED will prioritize its enforcement actions towards unauthorized disposable products most widely used by children – those bearing names such as Strawberry Hard Candy, Pineapple Lemonade, Mango Bomb, Berry Gelato, Lush Ice and O.M.G.

"The federal flavor ban left a gaping hole for disposable flavored vape products," said Dr. Kathleen Hoke, a University of Maryland Law School Professor and Director of the Legal Resource Center for Public Health Policy. "I am happy to know Comptroller Franchot is putting children first by closing that gap."

Earlier today, the Field Enforcement Division notified industry leaders to make them aware of this state policy change. In addition, the agency posted an informational bulletin about the targeted enforcement on the Comptroller's website.

As the state's tobacco regulator, the Comptroller issues licenses to wholesalers and retailers of tobacco products and ESDs. If those licenses are deceptively, fraudulently or unlawfully used, the Comptroller can suspend or revoke those licenses or assess additional penalties.

Agents from the Comptroller's Field Enforcement Division will immediately begin license checks and product inspections to ensure compliance.

"As a parent of two teenagers whose family has been directly impacted by the vaping epidemic, I applaud the Comptroller's enforcement actions against those ESD products that are most commonly used by kids," said John Brennan, an Anne Arundel County resident and a member of the e-facts Task Force. "Disposable ESDs give children a relatively inexpensive and easily accessible path toward nicotine addiction. Keeping unregulated highly addictive ESDs out of the hands of our children is a step in the right direction."

Lindsey Graham goes after the media for not scrutinizing Joe and Hunter Biden enough during impeachment proceedings

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 09:45 AM PST

Lindsey Graham took a hit at the press Sunday, claiming media outlets didn't scrutinize Joe and Hunter Biden enough for potential corruption in Ukraine.

'I just think the media's so in the tank over this issue, it makes me sick to my stomach,' Graham told CBS's Face the Nation, adding that the concerns about the Bidens are 'legitimate' and the media isn't 'taking it seriously.'

Claims against the duo came in the midst of the impeachment proceedings, when Donald Trump urged his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate the Bidens business dealings there.

Graham, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has pledged to investigate the Bidens now that the president has been acquitted in his impeachment trial.

Expel Mitt: Romney has no place in today’s Republican Party

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 09:30 AM PST

Sen. Mitt Romney shocked America this week when he announced that he would vote for the conviction of President Trump for abuse of power.

As Romney himself noted in his speech, Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. By voting to oust the president, Romney indicated he has no confidence in its leadership, nor any loyalty to the party as an institution. This decision, as demonstrated by Romney's subsequent media tour, was born rather more out of pride than principle and should result in devastating consequences — including but not limited to censure and expulsion.

Though former Vice President Joe Biden's presidential prospects have dimmed following the Iowa caucus results, it remains a very real possibility that Romney would endorse his friend, should he emerge as the Democratic presidential nominee. Despite how evident it was that Biden and his son abused their power and influence for financial benefit, Romney praised Biden as a "man of honor" as recently as October.

‘We will bring the fire’: 'Squad' member Ayanna Pressley threatens those who ‘don’t see the light’

"As I said when we were at the border, we're going to keep telling and elevating these stories with the hopes that you will see the light," said Pressley. "And if you don't see the light, then we will bring the fire. That's just how it progresses."

Pressley made the comments in a panel discussion at Howard University in Washington with Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib, all Democrats. Each of the members has vocalized frustration with President Trump's immigration policies, with Ocasio-Cortez comparing the border detention centers to "concentration camps."

Dershowitz: Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer ‘have to go’ if Democrats want to regain power

"I think they need new leadership. I think Schumer and Pelosi have to go. Schumer, because of his history of lying. You know, Pelosi actually called for me to be disbarred … because I had persuaded some senators" in the Senate trial, he said referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

"I think the Dems need new leaders if they have any chance of returning to power," Dershowitz said in an interview that aired Sunday morning on "The Cats Roundtable" with radio host John Catsimatidis on AM 970.

House will attempt to revive Equal Rights Amendment this week

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 08:30 AM PST

The House is poised this week to pass a measure that would revive the long-dead Equal Rights Amendment by repealing the 1982 deadline imposed on states to ratify it.

The measure, H.J. Res. 79, would "permanently reopen the ratification process for the amendment by eliminating the deadline," the Congressional Budget Office reported.

The amendment has gained new life in recent years. Many of the women in the House Democratic Caucus sported ERA pins during President Trump's State of Union address on Tuesday and wore white to symbolize the suffragist movement.

But the effort to resuscitate the ERA faces significant obstacles.

Corey Feldman says pedophilia is Hollywood’s ‘biggest problem’ — not #MeToo

Posted: 10 Feb 2020 08:00 AM PST

Corey Feldman wants the world to know: Pedophilia is "Hollywood's biggest problem."

In an interview with the Guardian, the '80s icon claims his long-awaited documentary will expose a child sex ring in which he and late actor Corey Haim were victims. Feldman, 48, who has teased potentially incriminating information for decades, says he plans to finally name the abusers of his "Lost Boys" co-star in the doc, tentatively titled "Truth: The Rape of the Two Coreys."

The "Goonies" and "Stand by Me" actor also criticized the industry for impeding his film's production by sending lawyers to block access to police reports and footage. "Nobody wants to go after the bad guys," he said.

The eccentric star also took aim at #MeToo, decrying the film industry for giving momentum to that movement while ignoring his own explosive accusations for so long. "They go to the SAG [Screen Actors Guild] awards and they get all dressed in black and they honor Patricia Arquette. But why was I not invited?" he asked.

Biden Calls Woman 'Lying Dog-Faced Pony Soldier'

If you're Joe Biden, call a woman who introduced herself as "Madison" a "lying dog-faced pony soldier" after she says she's attended a caucus.

According to Yahoo News' Sharon Weinberger, Biden has previously used the phrase - from a John Wayne movie - to disparage Republicans.

Sunday's outburst is the latest in a string of Bidenisms - which have included calling a voter fat and challenging him to a push-up contest or an IQ test.

That attack came just hours after Williams approached a patrol van in the same part of the Bronx late Saturday and fired at two officers inside, wounding one before escaping on foot, police said.

In the hospital photos, Williams appears to be sedated with his right wrist handcuffed to his bed. His face is severely swollen and covered in dried blood from a wound on his cheek.

And the big one they are freaking over is the property department supposedly has a bunch of missing items that could jeopardize criminal cases. This is a complete failure of organizational leadership. Barb can no longer blame one officer at a time. This is Barb, Kolb, Meienschein, Kaiser being inept and comfortable for years while not doing their jobs. Jake is on the hook for allowing it. Watch them spin and blame rather than own and apologize. They are hiding this trainwreck.

Authorities in Florida said on Saturday that a man deliberately rammed a vehicle into a tent of Republican volunteers who were registering people to vote.

"Jacksonville police say a driver intentionally crashed a van through a tent where Duval County GOP volunteers were registering voters Saturday afternoon," The Florida Times-Union reported. "Several Duval County GOP volunteers were working at the registration tent when a white man in his early 20s driving an older – possibly 1980s – brown van pulled up toward the tent."

Lt. Larry Gayle of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told reporters that law enforcement was looking at the incident "as in reference to interruption of the political process."

Delaware Facility Supervisor Pleads Guilty in Maryland to Federal Charges of Tax Evasion and Interstate Transportation of Stolen Goods

Stole Goods Worth More than $3.6 Million from FedEx Shipments and Evaded More Than $660,000 in Federal Income Taxes

Baltimore, Maryland – Joseph Kukta, age 43, of Laurel, Delaware, pleaded guilty today to federal charges of interstate transportation of stolen goods and tax evasion, in connection with his theft and resale of merchandise being shipped through a commercial mail service.

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur; Special Agent in Charge Kelly R. Jackson of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation, Washington, D.C. Field Office; and Special Agent in Charge John Eisert of U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Baltimore.

According to his plea agreement, from 2007 through July 30, 2019, Kukta worked as a Senior Manager at the FedEx facility located in Seaford, Delaware. The facility handled all the FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery packages passing through the Delmarva Peninsula. As the most senior employee at the facility, Kukta oversaw all operational aspects of the facility and supervised over 100 employees and contractors, earning an annual salary of more than $92,000.

Kukta admitted that beginning in 2009 and continuing until June 2019, he stole packages shipped via FedEx and resold the items to Person A, currently living in Colorado, at approximately 50% of the item's retail price. Kukta then transported the stolen items, using his vehicles and trailers, to Person B who resided in Maryland. Person B is Person A's father. From 2012 through 2019 Person A made 275 payments to Kukta totaling more than $1.8 million for merchandise worth approximately $3.6 million that was stolen from FedEx.

As detailed in his plea agreement, Kukta stole packages that contained bulk retail goods and merchandise shipped by suppliers including Sony Electronics, Panasonic, Apple and others, intended for delivery to a Walmart Distribution Center in Smyrna, Delaware. Beginning in 2012, Kukta's theft of packages became frequent and consistent, occurring on a weekly basis in certain months. Kukta identified packages he would steal by accessing FedEx computer systems and reviewing packages that had been loaded onto a FedEx trailer awaiting delivery to the Walmart Distribution Center. Kukta selected specific packages which he believed, based on the shippers of the packages, contained high-end electronics or other merchandise of value that could be easily resold. In 2018, Kukta began to also steal packages from FedEx trailers that were loaded for delivery to a Nike Store in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Kukta went to the FedEx facility on Sundays, holidays, or other times when employees were not at the facility, and removed the packages he previously identified from the FedEx trailers. Kukta attempted to avoid detection by turning off the lights at the facility and blocking certain surveillance cameras with cardboard boxes and other objects. Kukta loaded the stolen packages into his GMC Yukon or into vehicles operated by FedEx contractors and parked at the facility, then drove the vehicles to his rented storage unit in Seaford, where he unloaded and stored the items.

On June 5, 2019, Kukta learned that law enforcement had subpoenaed surveillance footage from the FedEx facility in Seaford. Approximately two weeks later, Kukta went to the storage unit and retrieved the remaining stolen items. Kukta sold that merchandise at an auction house in Lincoln, Delaware.

Kukta also admitted that he evaded paying income taxes on the proceeds of the scheme by failing to report that income on his annual joint federal income tax returns, causing a tax loss to the United States totaling $660,439. To conceal the income, Kukta provided false information to two banks when they questioned why he was receiving money from Company A (which was controlled by Person A). As to each bank, Kukta falsely told bank representatives that he had been selling items from his father's estate, which he knew was false. Kukta also provided false information to the IRS during a correspondence audit, claiming that the items he had sold on eBay during 2014 were from his father's estate, not the sale of stolen goods.

Kukta faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for interstate transportation of stolen goods; and a maximum of five years in federal prison for tax evasion. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake has scheduled sentencing for June 18, 2020 at 9:15 a.m.

United States Attorney Robert K. Hur commended IRS-CI and HSI for their work in the investigation. Mr. Hur thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Harry M. Gruber and Paul A. Riley, who are prosecuting the case.
