Lawmakers debate bills with serious implications for the IRS Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:00 PM PDT The House Ways and Means Committee has a bone to pick with the Internal Revenue Service. Lawmakers on the committee favorably reported four bills to the House floor on April 13, which proponents said would hold the IRS more accountable for its actions, especially in the realms of hiring and customer service. However, opponents said that the bills will make it even harder for the IRS to complete its job effectively. "This is simply our committee saying clearly to the IRS, Republican or Democrat, that you will have a real customer service plan for the American taxpayer, who pays your salaries, or if you don't, there will be consequences," Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) said. "If you're truly concerned about customer service, then you have to fully fund the agency," Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) said. "Your budgets have consistently starved the IRS of the resources they need to do their job. … It's very convenient to handicap the agents, and then point the finger at them for not functioning. While we pass legislation increasing the IRS workload, we reduce their funding and we reduce their workforce." More |

What Socrates Can Teach You To Teach Your Kids Posted: 16 Apr 2016 08:00 PM PDT Moms and dads determined to raise children who love to learn and who respect others might do well to skip the latest parenting guides and turn instead to Socrates and Confucius. They and other great thinkers who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago still offer surprisingly relevant advice that one generation can pass on to the next. "The search for knowledge and how to lead a meaningful life is nothing new," says Dean Chavooshian, author of The Pursuit of Wisdom (www.thepursuitofwisdom.net), which explores more than 80 great thinkers in philosophy, religion and science. "If parents introduce children to these ideas from the past, they will have a better understanding of how to live, think and make decisions in the world today." Of course, skeptical young people might doubt that anyone who predates the Internet has much to offer in the 21st century. They are wrong, Chavooshian says. "These ideas are relevant whether people are wearing togas or jeans," he says, "and they have practical applications that can help all of us." Examples of everyday advice these extraordinary minds left us include: • Ask questions to understand other viewpoints. When people hear an opinion that differs from their own – whether it's about politics, religion or the merits of a favorite entertainer – their immediate reaction is to argue for their side. But Socrates' favorite method for weighing the validity of someone's argument was not to counter with his own arguments. Instead, he posed questions. Lots and lots of questions – hoping to lead to a broader understanding of issues. • Treat others well. Good manners aren't just empty gestures you reluctantly agree to because your grandmother expects it. Roughly 2,500 years ago, Confucius stressed the importance of paying attention to rules about politeness and decorum. How you treat others really does make a difference in how they treat you. Confucius' disciples marveled that he made his point "by being cordial, frank, courteous, temperate, (and) deferential." • Nurture your curiosity. The world is filled with endless topics to study. You should never stop learning. Chavooshian suggests young people look to Leonardo da Vinci for inspiration. "He was fascinated by just about everything," Chavooshian says. Da Vinci's journal pages were practically an encyclopedia of conceptual inventions and observations in the fields of architecture, engineering, astronomy, zoology, biology, geology and hydraulics. Somehow, he also found time to paint "The Mona Lisa" and "The Last Supper." "We all have a hunger to unravel the mysteries of life," Chavooshian says. "But it's important to remember that you don't have to start from square one. A lot of wonderful thinkers have already laid an excellent foundation for us." About Dean Chavooshian Dean Chavooshian is author of The Pursuit of Wisdom (www.thepursuitofwisdom.net). After earning a degree in Theology/Philosophy, Chavooshian received a Master's Degree in Architecture and over 30 years worked with prominent New York architectural firms and international real estate developers. |
Hillary Slams Companies That Move Overseas To Avoid Taxes, So Guess What She Just Got Caught Doing Posted: 16 Apr 2016 07:30 PM PDT Hillary Clinton vows that if elected she will crack down on corporations that move their mailing address simply to reduce their tax bill. She might want to start with herself. The Washington Examiner reports: Bill and Hillary Clinton, along with their nonprofit Clinton Foundation, have established at least five shell companies in Delaware, according to tax filings highlighted on Monday... ...All five are filed at 1209 North Orange Street in Wilmington. The address is shared with companies like Google, Apple, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Ford, General Electric and more than 280,000 others that use the facility to take advantage of the state's tax laws... ... According to the tax filings reported on Monday, the former secretary of state established ZFS Holdings, LLC, at the Wilmington address to process $5.5 million from her book publisher, Simon & Schuster, one week after she left the department 2013. Former president Bill Clinton established WJC, LLC to receive consulting fees in 2008. Source: AAN |
Are Both Parties Trying to Rig The Election? Posted: 16 Apr 2016 07:00 PM PDT Earlier in the week, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump charged that some GOP officials were "rigging" the nomination process against him. Now that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is beginning to reap the benefits of his campaign laying the groundwork in key places during the past several months, particularly in unbound delegation states such as Colorado and North Dakota, Trump is finding himself on the short end of the delegate selection process. Because Colorado did not have a primary or caucus but went only to a state convention, Trump is saying such a move is out of bounds. The North Dakota Republicans did the exact same thing a week earlier, but he didn't levy the same charges toward the Peace Garden State GOP leaders. Simultaneously, Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton's campaign spokesman claimed that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I/D-VT) is trying to "rig" the Democratic system by attempting to convince Super Delegates who have already announced for Clinton to change their minds. For Republicans, state party leaders in Colorado and North Dakota, as well those in Louisiana, South Carolina, and Tennessee, have acted within the party rules. The latter three have apparently elected a large number of Cruz supporters as delegates in Trump-won states. This result displeases the Trump operation because it may result in those latter delegations voting differently past the first roll call than how their respective Republican electorates decided. In fact, the Cruz campaign worked the system; the Trump organization did not. The result may be trending Cruz's way through strategy, planning, and implementation, and not because a group of biased state party leaders "rigged" the system. For the Democrats, about 60% of Super Delegates are unbound. Therefore, these individuals have the right to change their votes. Just because some may have announced for Clinton doesn't mean they can't change their minds. The Sanders' campaign trying to get their votes is certainly well within the rules. Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon, in a CNN interview as reported by the Politico newspaper, said he believes Sanders is the candidate who is trying to "rig" the system and deny Clinton the nomination even though the majority of Democrats (56%) in primaries and caucuses have voted for her and she has won more bound, or pledged, delegates. While his statistics are correct, such is not to say that Sanders is somehow violating the party rules by nefariously trying to undercut the majority of party voters. His actions are well within the party rules, just as were those of the Clinton campaign ground workers when they originally committed these same Super Delegate votes. Many of these Party Leader/Elected Official delegates committed to the former Secretary of State long before votes were cast in the 35 Democratic primaries or caucus held so far, therefore the argument that Sanders should not try to convert them because a majority has been established does not hold water. Tension is thick, and tempers are becoming frayed. Such is the case when the campaigns can see the finish line in front of them, meaning the end is near for all but two candidates. To date, despite the complaints and foul cries, the nomination systems appear to be working properly. Source: AAN |
Veterans mark 50th anniversary of Vietnam War Posted: 16 Apr 2016 06:30 PM PDT Veterans gathered at VA facilities around the country, as well as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The Defense and Veterans Affairs departments joined together Tuesday to honor the nearly 9 million Americans who serviced in the Armed Forces from Nov. 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, as part of the Vietnam War Commemoration. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the war. "This Commemoration has special significance for those of us at VA because of our honored mission to serve those who have 'borne the battle,'" said VA Secretary Robert McDonald, during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Veteran Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. "It's also an opportunity to remember our VA colleagues who served in this generation of Veterans, to extend our heartfelt appreciation to them and to their families who shared the burden of their loved one's service." Posted: 16 Apr 2016 06:00 PM PDT Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Wednesday that his proposed wall across the U.S.-Mexico border would be completed within two years. "I would say it would be complete within two years from the time we start, we'll start quickly," Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity at a town hall in Pittsburgh, Pa. "We'll start quickly, and it will be a real wall. It will be a real wall." The self-imposed deadline was the most detail Trump has offered about his controversial proposal aimed at preventing illegal immigration. At one point, the crowd at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall began chanting "Build the wall! Build the wall!" Source: Fox News |
Finally, There Are Some Young People Standing Up to the PC Left Posted: 16 Apr 2016 05:30 PM PDT The situation on college campuses has spun out of control. At America's elite universities, our supposed best and brightest have had their minds poisoned by a brand of left-wing pabulum that is so toxic that the mere use of terms or characters that might offend someone, somewhere, sometime is enough to send them into a catatonic state. Where colleges were once an open forum for the exchange of ideas and rational debate, they're now pockets of safe spaces where adult toddlers can retreat any time their hard left worldview is challenged. It's a disaster, and it threatens the very intellectual stability of our nation. One group is sick of it, and they're taking action: On Freedom Day, April 13th, Young Americans for Liberty launches the Fight for Free Speech campaign, a national movement committed to ending unconstitutional, restrictive speech codes and combatting threats to Free Speech on college and university campuses, by hosting more than 340 coordinated events nationwide. C.J. Sailor, YAL's Director of Free Speech said of the program, "College campuses are under threat from authoritarian voices that only look to stomp out ideas and viewpoints. Our Fight for Free Speech campaign is the largest coordinated attempt to combat these threats and encourage the healthy, free flow of ideas." The Fight for Free Speech campaign will run from April 13th through April 20th. During that time there will be more than 340 events in all 50 states. At these events, YAL chapters will host sneak-peek screenings of Can We Take a Joke?, starring comedians Adam Carolla, Lisa Lampanelli, Gilbert Gottfried, and Penn Jillette. The film is set to release later this year. Participating campuses include Clemson University, University of California - Berkeley, Auburn University, Morehouse College, University of Georgia, Temple University, Ithaca College, American University, Rutgers University, University of Pennsylvania, and many more. The film gained distribution this month from Samuel Goldwyn Films, the production house behind The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and other recent hit productions. Recently news about the documentary has been featured in Reason Magazine, The Interrobang, Variety, and the Federalist. The Federalist titled their piece on the film, "Go Watch Can We Take A Joke?" and called it, "Required viewing by everyone in this country." It premiered to a sold-out crowd in November at the IFC Center in New York and has since been featured at several film festivals including the Sun Valley Film Festival. Along with organizing screenings of Can We Take a Joke?, YAL chapters are strategically reforming campus policies across the country to respect Free Speech rights. Dozens of reforms are occurring right now in coordination with legal groups like the Foundation for Individual Rights and Education (FIRE). Young Americans for Liberty grew out of Texas congressman Ron Paul's 2008 presidential campaign. Since then, the organization has grown to nearly 600 chapters nationwide. Their statement of principles reads: We are the Young Americans for Liberty. We recognize the natural rights of life, liberty, and property set forth by our Founding Fathers. Our country was created to protect the freedoms of the individual and be directed by We the People. We recognize that freedom requires responsibility, and therefore we hold ourselves to a high standard of character and conduct. Integrity motivates our action. Principle defines our outlook towards government. Peace and prosperity drive our ambitions towards our countrymen. We inherit a corrupt, coercive world that has lost respect for voluntary action. Our government has failed and dragged our country into moral decay. The political class dominates the agenda with a violent, callous, controlling grip. For this we do not stand. We welcome limited government conservatives, classical liberals, and libertarians who trust in the creed we set forth. There's no question that college campuses are in trouble, but are they too far gone? We think not. The radical left-wing ideology preached on college campuses tends to fold like a cheap suit when it comes up against the demands of the real world. Still, it remains incredibly dangerous tonic for impressionable young minds, especially when left to grow unchecked. We salute Young Americans for Liberty, and hope they're successful in their quest to restore free speech on college campuses. |
BREAKING: Contested Convention Almost Certain Posted: 16 Apr 2016 05:00 PM PDT On Breitbart News Daily Thursday morning, author John Yob warned the GOP will only select its nominee after a contested convention in Cleveland, Ohio in July. "It's a hundred precent certain in my mind to be a contested convention," said Yob, who recently authored Chaos: The Outsider's Guide to a Contested Republican National Convention. "It's hard or impossible to get to 1,237 allocated delegates," Yob continued. "As a result of that, you won't know the results until the first ballot. So I would say it's 100 percent likely to be a contested convention. That doesn't mean it's 100 percent likely to be a multi-ballot convention." Yob also disputed the notion put forth by RNC member Randy Evans that Trump could secure the nomination with only 1,100 delegates. Source: Breitbart |
You Won't Believe What Crazy Feminists Are Trying to Celebrate Now Posted: 16 Apr 2016 04:30 PM PDT Modern feminism is pushing more and more outrageous things. But the latest thing they are trying to "destigmatize" makes free bleeding look positively normal. Now feminists are trying to get sufferers from STIs to proudly proclaim their sickness. Instead of trying to help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections, feminists want them to be "destigmatized" and "normalized." Here's the rest from Newsbusters: In light of STI Awareness Month, some feminists took to issuing a Twitter hashtag campaign #ShoutYourStatus, where women can declare they have an STI because…courage or something. Yes, there's actually an entire page devoted to "…the amazing reason women are telling the world they have STIs." The #ShoutYourStatus campaign was a creation of writer Ella Dawson, along with social work student Kayla Axelrod, freelance writer Britni de la Cretaz, and writer/activist Lachrista Greco Their goal is to promote a more open conversation about living with STIs. In a recent interview with Revelist, an online publication that "media publication delivering quality content to millennial women," de la Cretaz stated, "The truth of the matter is, many people are living, and living happily, as STI+ people… "Being able to be publicly open about my status as someone with genital herpes is a privilege and I want to use that privilege to help other people feel less alone." Other degenerate feminists were bragging about telling 7th graders about how having an STI doesn't mean having any less of a fulfilling sex life. De la Cretaz herself argued that sufferers from STIs suffer "discrimination" and "sex-shaming." Instead of being celebrated, STIs need to be treated as a public health problem. Many of them can result in severe health problems and even death. Some such as herpes and AIDS are incurable. This is just another example of how Third Wave Feminism is just another ideology of death. Source: AAN |

Seaford Man Arrested for Fraudulent Theft Posted: 16 Apr 2016 03:49 PM PDT Greenwood, DE - Delaware State Police have arrested a Seaford man after it was determined he was defrauding a vulnerable adult out of thousands of dollars. The initial investigation began on Friday April 8, 2016 when a 47-year-old Greenwood man's sister came into Troop 5 to report that her brother had been giving hundreds of dollars to a subject who reportedly told him that he'd pay him back. The sister, who has power of attorney over her brother, conveyed to the troopers that her brother has physical and mental disabilities, but is able to reside by himself with assistance with daily tasks and finances. The investigation revealed that Joshua D. Sears, 37 of Seaford, befriended the victim years ago and for the last several months has been convincing the victim that he won a lawsuit in which he was going to receive six million dollars. Sears also told the victim that the money was being kept in a cash box which was being passed along between a number of lawyers settling the case. The victim then began giving Sears small amounts of cash on a daily or weekly basis believing that Sears was using it for court fines and would pay him back upon getting his lawsuit money. The total amount the victim has been defrauded over that last 16 months was almost $19,000.00. Joshua Sears turned himself into troopers on Thursday April 14, 2016 and was charged with Crime Against a Vulnerable Adult, which is a Felony, and Theft By False Pretense over $1500. He was arraigned at JP2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $7,500.00 secured bond. If anyone has had any similar incidents involving Joshua Sears they are asked to contact Master Corporal C. Arnold at 302-232-3479. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, via the internet atwww.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com, or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword "DSP." |

Colorado Confusion: Did Ballot Errors Cost Trump? Posted: 16 Apr 2016 02:30 PM PDT Volunteers at the Colorado Republican Assembly are coming forward with evidence to indicate that their state's delegate selection process was riddled with errors that disadvantaged some Donald Trump supporters who were running to become national delegates. The errors could have violated state bylaws significantly enough that some of the results could be contested, according to the volunteers. Sen. Ted Cruz took all 34 of Colorado's delegates last week. A handful of volunteers spoke to Breitbart News about the process. "I'm the former Chairman of the Pueblo County Republican Party and the person who developed the Slates for National Delegates for the Trump team. The Colorado GOP website was filled with errors posted about the National Delegates," Becky Mizel told Breitbart News. Source: Breitbart |
No Serious Injuries In Anne Arundel Co. Helicopter Crash Posted: 16 Apr 2016 02:15 PM PDT (HANOVER, MD) – Three people on board a helicopter that crashed near BWI Airport are not reporting serious injuries, but have been taken as a precaution to a local hospital. State and county police, as well as fire and rescue personnel remain on the scene of the crash and subsequent fire. The scene is in the area off Aviation Blvd., between the BWI MARC station and Old Stoney Run Road. Calls came in to the county 911 center at 12:52 p.m. today reporting a possible aircraft crash near the train tracks not far from the BWI MARC station. County fire and rescue personnel responded as did police from Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police and Anne Arundel County Police. Responding personnel found three people had been on-board the Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter. They are identified as the pilot, Owen J. Garnett, 42, of Montrose, PA, and two passengers, Kevin A. Tennis, 29, of Colora, MD, and Jordan M. Marsh, 34, of Monkton, MD. The three reported they were checking power lines in the area when the crash occurred. None of the three on-board reported serious injuries. All three were transported by fire/EMS personnel to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center for evaluation as a precaution. The helicopter went down in a wooded area near a stream. The aircraft caught fire and the fire spread to the surrounding brush in the area. Fire department personnel extinguished the fires. The helicopter is owned by Sky River Helicopters of Pittstown, NJ. Federal authorities at the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash. Tim Tebow Eyed for Open Florida House Seat Posted: 16 Apr 2016 02:00 PM PDT The surprise retirement of a key Florida congressman has Republican strategists eager to give the ball to former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow, according to several sources. "We do not pick favorites," said a key party strategist, but "obviously a huge Florida football star would be an interesting candidate for our side of the aisle." Earlier this week, Rep. Ander Crenshaw, 71, a House appropriator from Jacksonville, Fla., announced his plan to retire at the end of his term this year. It was not expected. Tebow lives in the district, has his business, XV Enterprises and Tim Tebow Foundation, in Jacksonville too. More |
Ted Cruz & John Kasich Condemned An Innocent Man… Posted: 16 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT Donald Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was shredded by liberal media for having placed a hand on a female reporter who then claimed he assaulted her. Michelle Fields loudly proclaimed she had almost been thrown to the ground by Lewandowski – claims that were later proven to be false. Ted Cruz and John Kasich were all too happy to join the liberal media bandwagon and denounced both Lewandowski AND Donald Trump for the alleged incident and claimed they would have fired Mr. Lewandowski after Fields made her initial complaint – evidence be damned. They condemned an innocent man for nothing more than personal political advantage while Trump stood by his embattled campaign manager, claiming he reviewed the video of the alleged assault and found "nothing was there." Thousands of Teachers Flock to ‘White Privilege Conference’ Posted: 16 Apr 2016 01:00 PM PDT PHILADELPHIA – Thursday marked the start of "The 17th Annual White Privilege Conference" and this year's theme is "Let Freedom Ring, Re-Imagining Equality & Social Justice in the United States." The annual event is aimed at promoting the theory of White Privilege – that American society is hopelessly stacked against minorities and the only way to fix the system is for white people to acknowledge their immense "privilege" and repent. "Our vision is to build a community committed to dismantling white privilege, white supremacy and oppression, every day, everywhere," wrote Eddie Moore Jr., founder and president of "The Privilege Institute," which organizes the event. "WPC fosters an environment where every participant can engage deeply, and then through our Accountability program, bring what they have learned back to their own community so that their WPC experience impacts their lives, employment, and community all year long." The 2016 theme and Philadelphia location are designed to highlight the main reasons why the White Privilege Institute, and its like-minded attendees at the conference, hate America the most. "Throughout the history of the United States, 'liberty' and 'justice' have been espoused values, which have only ever applied to a very small minority of people," according to a letter to conference participants. Posted: 16 Apr 2016 12:30 PM PDT How has the 'system' been working out for you and your family? No wonder voters demand change. On Saturday, April 9, Colorado had an "election" without voters. Delegates were chosen on behalf of a presidential nominee, yet the people of Colorado were not able to cast their ballots to say which nominee they preferred. A planned vote had been canceled. And one million Republicans in Colorado were sidelined. In recent days, something all too predictable has happened: Politicians furiously defended the system. "These are the rules," we were told over and over again. If the "rules" can be used to block Coloradans from voting on whether they want better trade deals, or stronger borders, or an end to special-interest vote-buying in Congress—well, that's just the system and we should embrace it. Let me ask America a question: How has the "system" been working out for you and your family? More |
China’s Aggression Exposes Rift Between Obama, Top Navy Advisers Posted: 16 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT Escalating tensions over China's aggressive territorial claims in the South China Sea are casting a heavy pall over major international naval exercises underway in the Pacific, exposing what some analysts say is a growing rift between President Obama and his top naval advisers over how to repulse Beijing's provocations in one of the world's busiest sea lanes. The Komodo 2016 naval gathering is supposed to be for feel-good exercises. Ships from the U.S., China and nearly three dozen other nations come together to practice maritime cooperation to prepare for natural disasters such as the 2004 tsunami blamed for more than 230,000 deaths. But geopolitics and the South China Sea dispute are threatening to overshadow the exercises' original purpose. Chinese officials have complained in recent days about rival Japan's plans to send a 3,950-ton Hyuga-class helicopter destroyer through contested waters of the South China Sea to join the exercises and condemned a statement from the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven meeting in Japan this week that expressed their "strong opposition to any intimidating, coercive or provocative unilateral actions" in the waterway — a clear warning to Beijing. China has long feuded with the U.S. and its own neighbors — including the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia — over its expansive sovereignty claims in the South China Sea. Beijing's steady buildup of facilities and forces on artificial islands it has created in the sea have only increased the tensions. More here |
Gay Rights Movement ‘Emboldened’ by Marriage Ruling Targets Religious Liberty Posted: 16 Apr 2016 11:30 AM PDT If the debate over marriage looks like it's becoming more polarized, that's because it is. Professor John C. Eastman, founding director of the Claremont Institute's Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, said the Supreme Court opened a Pandora's box in June when it struck down all laws nationwide defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Rather than resolving an issue once and for all — as the court often thinks itself capable of doing — the decision only "further emboldened" the gay rights movement and led to a series of fights at the state level, he said. "Now, they're going after any exemptions for religious liberty and whatever. It's incredibly polarized," he said. This is not the first time the Supreme Court has sought to resolve political discord only to further inflame an issue. "The consequence of trying to settle the issue, ignoring the political resolution that was in the works in Dred Scott v. Sandford, led to the Civil War," Mr. Eastman said, referring to the 1857 Supreme Court decision that said slaves and their descendants could never become U.S. citizens. He also pointed to the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade creating a constitutional right to abortion, which has sparked a nearly half-century culture war in which the question of abortion has taken center stage in the political arena. More here |
Ron Paul warns Republicans not to vote for Ted Cruz Posted: 16 Apr 2016 11:00 AM PDT SALEM, N.H. -- In a sign of just how tricky it is to court libertarian Republicans here, and how diffuse Ron Paul's old supporters have become, the former Texas congressman took to Fox News Friday to criticize Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.). "They think he's for the free market, and he's owned by Goldman Sachs," Paul said. "He and Hillary have more in common than we have with Trump or anyone else." The "we" in that sentence was Paul's son Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Rand Paul's Wednesday exit from the presidential race kicked off a scramble for the sort of voters who gave almost a quarter of the 2012 Republican primary vote to Ron Paul. Since then, supporters of Rand Paul have been contacted by emissaries of Cruz and other candidates, and many have balked. More |
Posted: 16 Apr 2016 10:30 AM PDT Prosecutors in Palm Beach County, Florida announced Thursday that a potential criminal battery case against Donald Trump's campaign manager is dead in the water, calling into question the version of events presented by a reporter who filed the criminal complaint. One witness told police his eyes were fixed on Michelle Fields, the journalist who claimed Corey Lewandowski battered her – and her actions 'looked like a fraudulent slip-and-fall.' Police in Jupiter, Florida released video of their interview with Michael Spellman on Thursday, along with a more formal statement that he wrote immediately afterward. Spellman, the president of a glass technology company based in Jupiter, says on camera that Fields' reaction to Lewandowski separating her from Trump after a March 8 press conference was 'disproportionate' and 'bizarre.' 'At first I thought she was drunk,' he recalled. State Attorney Dave Aronberg and his chief assistant Adrienne Ellis considered Spellman's statement along with those of other witnesses, ultimately finding that there was conflicting evidence that would kill their chances of convicting Lewandowski. B-52 Bombers Arrive in Middle East for Fight against ISIS: Air Force Posted: 16 Apr 2016 10:00 AM PDT The Cold War-era B-52 Stratofortress bomber has arrived in the Middle East to launch airstrikes against the Islamic State, the U.S. Air Force announced. The long-range heavy bomber aircraft flew from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and arrived Saturday at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, according to a press release from Lt. Col. Chris Karns, a spokesman for U.S. Air Forces Central Command. The stationing of the B-52 in the Middle East marks the first time the service has based the aircraft in the region in a quarter century -- since Operation Desert Storm against Iraq in the early 1990s, the release states. The Stratofortress last flew operational missions during Operational Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan 2006, it states. The deployment comes three months after the service pulled the B-1B Lancer bombers from the region for upgrades and repairs. "The B-52 demonstrates our continued resolve to apply persistent pressure on Da'esh and defend the region in any future contingency," Lt. Gen. Charles Brown, head of the command and the combined forces air component, said in the release, referring to another name for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS. More |
Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:53 AM PDT Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap. Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake? A: Oh no. Wine made from fruit. Fruit very good. Brandy distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. Grain good too. Bottom up! Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one. If you have two body, your ratio two to one. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Can't think of one, sorry. My philosophy: No pain...good! Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food fried in vegetable oil. How getting more vegetable be bad? Q : Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Oh no! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach. Q: Is chocolate bad for me? A: You crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another vegetable! It best feel-good food around! Q: Is swimming good for your figure? A: If swimming good for figure, explain whale to me. Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle? A: Hey! 'Round' is shape! Well... I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets. And remember: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!" AND..... For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies. 1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. 5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits. CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you. |
Brent Bozell: CNN, MSNBC Should Be Praised for Banning 'Thug' Roger Stone Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:45 AM PDT Media Research Center President Brent Bozell says that political strategist Roger Stone deserves to be shunned by the media for his "long history of incendiary and offensive rhetoric… and offensive gestapo-like tactics." From NewsBusters: Media Research Center (MRC) President Brent Bozell issued the following statement praising CNN and MSNBC for their decisions to ban Roger Stone, a close associate of presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has called for intimidation of delegates at this summer's Republican Convention. Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:30 AM PDT Author Jeff Selingo appeared on Friday's edition of Breitbart News Daily to talk about his new book, There Is Life After College: What Parents and Students Should Know About Navigating School to Prepare for the Jobs of Tomorrow. Host Stephen K. Bannon said today's young people are looking at "a pretty bleak future," in which the "participation-trophy generation" learns that made-to-order careers are notwaiting for them after the graduate college, as they were told to expect all their lives. "Kids hate capitalism, because capitalism ain't working for them," as Bannon put it, capturing the sense of disillusionment that prompted so many young people to strike up a romance with socialism. "No doubt about it," Selingo agreed. "The basic problem now is that almost 50 percent of recent college graduates are under-employed. They're in jobs that don't even require a bachelor's degree." 3 Ways To Learn More About Your Muslim Neighbors Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:23 AM PDT Muslims are the fastest-growing religious group in the world, but in the United States Islam is often viewed negatively because of constant news about terrorism. For the average Muslim who seeks peace and security as much as anyone else, that can be both sad and frustrating. "I don't think we always do a good job of telling our story," says Fadel Al Mheiri, an Emirati filmmaker (www.tentpic.com) and author of the historical novel "Kingdom of Peacocks – Mists of Time." "We are just people and we have the same struggles as anyone else. But the extremists have been able to drive the narrative and that gives non-Muslims the wrong impression about the religion and the people who follow it." Through his storytelling – both in film and in print – Al Mheiri wants to change the perception. "I think it's our responsibility – my responsibility – to give a voice to the other side and let people know that what they see in the news isn't representative of Muslims," Al Mheiri says. "But I also encourage non-Muslims to take the initiative and learn all they can about the religion, because knowledge paves the way to understanding." To begin exploring Islam, he suggests that non-Muslims: • Start with online research. This is the digital era, so information that can help educate people is just two or three clicks away. Personal research is always a good first step to learning. Just make sure the internet sources are legitimate, because the web has plenty of misinformation as well. • Just ask. The best way to eliminate any mystery is to have a conversation, and most Muslims welcome sincere interest in and questions about their beliefs. Al Mheiri says not long ago in Washington, D.C., he met with a group from Indiana. "I got these great questions about ISIL and about why things are happening the way they are," he says. "We talked about why the media focuses so much on negative things about Islam and why average Muslims are being silent." • Visit a mosque. Check with a nearby mosque about the possibility of paying a visit to learn more. Sometimes mosques hold events, such as open houses, where non-Muslim community members are invited with the express purpose of getting to know their Muslim neighbors and learning more about the religion. "Each of us needs to do all we can to understand the lives and beliefs of others," Al Mheiri says. "It's important that we see each other as real people and not as the stereotypes that can drive us apart rather than bring us together." About Fadel Al Mheiri Fadel Al Mheiri (www.tentpic.com) is an Emirati filmmaker and author of the historical novel, "Kingdom of Peacocks – Mists of Time," the first of a trilogy about the Portuguese invasion of an imaginary kingdom in the Persian Gulf in the early 1500s. He graduated from the American University of Sharjah. He founded his own film production company, Tent Pictures Productions, in 2013 at the Abu Dhabi Media free zone Twofour54. |

State Department Belatedly Releases New Clinton Benghazi Documents Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:00 AM PDT Document Release Raises New Questions about State's FOIA Responses, Court Statements (Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today it has obtained new documents from the Department of State containing the telephone transcripts from the evening of September 11, 2012, in which then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton informs then-Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil that the deadly terrorist attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi "had nothing to do with the film." The documents include previously unreleased telephone transcripts with world leaders about the Benghazi attack. Clinton's admission to Kandil was first produced to the Select Committee on Benghazi on October 13, 2015 and publicized on the day of Mrs. Clinton's testimony, October 22, but court filings in Judicial Watch litigation show that the record was only produced after two federal court judges ordered the State Department to produce more Benghazi-related records to Judicial Watch. Similarly, Judicial Watch litigation also forced the release of the September 11, 2012 email in which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton informed her daughter by email that the attack had been staged by an "Al Qaeda-like group," rather than as the result of "inflammatory material posted on the Internet," as Mrs. Clinton had claimed in her official public statement one hour earlier. The State Department previously told a federal court that the Kandil document wasn't responsive to Judicial Watch's request and resulting lawsuit (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of State (No. 1:14-cv-01511)) seeking: Any and all records concerning, regarding, or related to notes, updates, or reports created in response to the September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. This request includes, but is not limited to, notes taken by then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton or employees of the Office of the Secretary of State during the attack and its immediate aftermath. ‘Terminator Genisys 2’ Pulled from 2017 Release Schedule, Trilogy Unlikely Posted: 16 Apr 2016 08:30 AM PDT Paramount has pulled its 'Terminator Genisys 2' sequel from the 2017 release schedule, handing its May 19, 2017 date to 'Baywatch'. Back in September 2014, Paramount Pictures made a bold move by announcing two sequels for Terminator Genisys, several months before the original movie even hit theaters. The studio set a May 19 2017 release date for Terminator Genisys 2, with a June 29, 2018 release set for Terminator Genisys 3, but given the disappointing box office take of Terminator Genisys, many wondered whether these sequels would even see the light of day. Variety is reporting that Terminator Genisys 2 has lost its release date, with the studio handing the May 19, 2017 release date to their upcoming Baywatch remake. Variety also mentions that the trilogy as a whole may not happen, but ERC Box Office claims that the movie is now simply listed as "To Be Announced (TBA)." The site's Twitter feed says that, if the studio was truly pulling the plug on the entire trilogy, they would have said the sequel was completely pulled from the release calendar, so there may still be hope for the sequels yet. The studio didn't move the June 29, 2018 date for Terminator Genisys 3 either, so it's possible these sequels may still happen. More |
School Choice is Turning Urban Schools Around Posted: 16 Apr 2016 08:00 AM PDT Expansion of school choice in Denver has led to dramatic improvements in student learning, according to an article in Education Next by David Osborne, a senior fellow at the liberal Progressive Policy Institute. School choice has grown in Denver to the point that today about two in five of the city's students are in public charter schools or fairly similar innovation schools. The results speak for themselves. The dropout rate was cut by more than half in the last decade. In the 2006 to 2007 school year, less than 40 percent of Denver students graduated on time. Today, about 65 percent do. The portion of students who scored at grade level or better in reading, writing and math also increased by 15 percentage points. In Denver, 14 percent of students from low-income families enrolled in college. That's disappointingly low, but it's much preferable to the five percent number for the rest of the state. What separates Denver from other cities that have expanded school choice is how the local district worked for school choice instead of trying to shut it down. "With an elected board, Denver Public Schools (DPS) has embraced charter schools and created innovation schools, which it treats somewhat like charters. Since 2005 it has closed or replaced 48 schools and opened more than 70, the majority of them charters," Osborne writes. More |
High School Wants to Shut Down Off-campus 'Jesus Lunch' Posted: 16 Apr 2016 07:30 AM PDT There's a religious liberty standoff underway in Middleton, Wisconsin. On one side is a group of Christian moms armed with Chick-fil-A sandwiches and 400 homemade brownies. On the other side are public school administrators who believe that Jesus and plump juicy chicken breasts are "divisive." The controversy surrounds an off-campus lunch event involving students at Middleton High School known as "Jesus Lunch." The high school allows students to eat lunch off-campus. In 2014 a small group of parents began meeting with their children in a nearby park — providing home cooked meals along with a Christian-themed, inspirational message. The small weekly gatherings in the fall and spring eventually morphed into a popular gathering spot for hungry kids — with nearly 500 turning out for all sorts of goodies — ranging from Chick-fil-A sandwiches and fresh fruit to hundreds of homemade brownies. "We show up every week just to show the love of Jesus," parent Beth Williams told me. "Our mission statement for Jesus Lunch is 'food for the body, nutrition for the soul.'" Superintendent Donald Johnson and Principal Stephen Plank called the off-campus religious gatherings "divisive" and they want the weekly non-denominational meetings shut down. "We believe that religious or political events do not have a place in our school or on our campus, except when sponsored by a student group in accordance with our rules, which require prior approval," the pair wrote in an email sent to parents on April 12. N.J. Rules Cruz is a ‘Natural Born’ Citizen Posted: 16 Apr 2016 07:00 AM PDT New Jersey's secretary of state rejected a challenge to Sen. Ted Cruz's eligibility to run for president, issuing a brief ruling Wednesday that said she accepted the reasoning of one of her judges that because of his birth to an American mother, he meets the criterion. Kimberly M. Guadagno's decision is the latest to back Mr. Cruz, who has yet to lose at any level. His critics say that since he was born in Canada to an American mother and Cuban father, he does not meet the requirement that all presidential candidates be "natural born" citizens. "The place of the senator's birth is undisputed, as is the fact that Senator Cruz's mother was a United States citizen at the time she gave birth to the senator," Ms. Guadagno said in her ruling. She based her ruling on the findings of state Administrative Law Judge Jeff Masin, who earlier this week issued an in-depth opinion finding that Victor K. Williams, a lawyer who's filed to run as a write-in candidate in New Jersey's GOP primary, did have standing to challenge Mr. Cruz's eligibility. But Judge Masin went on to review the history of the Constitution and concluded that its authors had intended that someone born to American parents, no matter where the location, was a "natural born" citizen. "As such I conclude that Senator Cruz meets the Article II, Section I qualifications and is eligible to be nominated for president." More |
Where Does Ted Cruz Want to Send Hillary? Posted: 16 Apr 2016 06:53 AM PDT One way or another, Hillary Clinton will be living in government housing according to Ted Cruz. Not only does Cruz want to beat her at the ballot box, he wants to defeat her in a criminal court. The Washington Examiner reports: Ted Cruz on Monday implied that if given the opportunity, he will take Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton out of the public eye once and for all. "I've got slightly different government housing in mind for her," Cruz told a rally for his presidential campaign in Irvine, Calif., in reference to the prospect of Clinton entering the White House. He did not elaborate on what he had in mind, though past comments make it clear. He said in March that he would "absolutely" seek to prosecute Clinton if the current Justice Department refuses to do so. Source: AAN |
1 firefighter dead, another injured in Prince George's County shooting Posted: 16 Apr 2016 06:45 AM PDT Suspected shooter in police custody TEMPLE HILLS, Md. —A firefighter is dead and another is wounded after a triple shooting Friday night in Prince George's County. Police said a firefighter and a firefighter-paramedic with the Morningside Fire Company were called around 7:30 p.m. to check on a man at a house in the 5000 block of Sharon Road in Temple Hills. Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said a relative of the man believed he was experiencing a medical emergency. According to police, the man did not respond when the firefighters arrived. "They tried to get his attention, knock on the door, the door was not answered. At that point, they decided the best course of action was to try to enter the home, check on the individual," Stawinski said. "Shortly after beginning that process, a series of shots were fired at the firefighters." More |

Could Trump University Help Highlight The Importance of Asset Protection? Posted: 16 Apr 2016 06:23 AM PDT Years ago, Donald Trump endorsed a series of books for his university written by experts in the financial sector, including one titled, "Trump University Asset Protection 101." With his meteoric rise in politics as a truly one-of-a-kind candidate, controversy is bubbling around the former reality-TV star's past business dealings, including his university, with thousands of former students claiming the courses they took had no value. "The world has had its fill of Trump, yet it seems to want more," says attorney Hillel Presser of the Presser Law Firm, P.A., which specializes in comprehensive domestic and international Asset Protection. "Love him or hate him, there could be at least one great takeaway from Trump's media storm: maybe it'll encourage some to look more closely at their financial vulnerabilities." Helping educate the average person on asset protection is why Presser wrote "Financial Self-Defense" (www.assetprotectionattorneys.com). He says there are several reasons people should take steps to safeguard whatever wealth they have. • The world is a minefield of threats to your hard-earned money. Lawsuits, which can be unpredictable, often drive people to asset protection – and for good reason. The tort system in the United States is the most expensive in the industrial world, accounting for 2.2 percent of the gross domestic product. The annual cost of litigation in the U.S. is $867.4 billion. And don't assume your good behavior will always protect you. Consider the school teacher defending a $5 million lawsuit because she dismissed a student caught cheating on an exam. • You don't have to be wealthy to benefit from financial self-defense. Wealth is relative. If an old car and a small bank account are all you have financially, it still makes sense to protect them. Hard-working folks across the country are worried about creditor problems or lawsuits, and what little they have is precious to them. There are cost-effective ways for them protect their money. • Liability insurance doesn't always protect you. Liability insurance is important, but it's just a starting point. Most lawsuits and other financial claims aren't insured, or your insurance company may deny you coverage on your claim because of an exclusion. You need more than insurance, which covers few financial catastrophes. You need a full, robust self-defense plan. "I wouldn't have thought that a presidential election could possibly highlight the importance of asset protection, but here we are," Presser says. "These are interesting times." About Hillel L. Presser, Esq., MBA Hillel L. Presser's firm, The Presser Law Firm, P.A., represents individuals and businesses in establishing comprehensive asset protection plans. He is a former adjunct faculty member for law at Lynn University and offers complimentary copies of his book "Financial Self-Defense" through www.assetprotectionattorneys.com. |

LEGENDARY COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 4-16-16 Posted: 16 Apr 2016 06:00 AM PDT Amusing Memories In the early days of the 20th Century, courting was done on a very different level than it is today. I won't even try to go to the present methods and I wasn't around 100 years ago. I did hear from my grandparents that they courted in her mother's parlor. My grandfather would walk the two miles in from where he lived out on Anderson Rd. (now Pemberton Drive) and sit with my grandmother until her mother would turn on a certain light. That was his signal to leave. It was usually early by present day standards. That leaves us with the mid-20th Century. The end of WWII brought about economic changes from which America has yet to recover. The women had gotten used to bringing home a paycheck and when the men returned from the war, the two incomes allowed them to purchase their first home. As economic situations increased, maybe a second car was in the budget. This car was usually the vehicle in which the children learned to drive and used for the "parlor". Houses built in the 1950's were usually constructed with a living room, dining room, kitchen, bath and three bedrooms. They didn't have "family rooms" or "parlors". The only place that a young couple could expect any privacy was in the family car. In those days, there were many out of the way places for just such a quiet moment. These were affectionately known as "parking places". Anyone that grew up in the 1950's has many memories of their favorite spot. This was in the age of innocence when you didn't have to worry about being mugged or worse. Leaning on the horn ring was about as bad as it got. What a mood breaker! There was also a thing called "grasshopping". This was when somebody found your favorite spot and a group of boys would sneak up on the car and pound on the trunk and scare the bejeebers out of you. It was all done in fun and usually never led to anyone seeking physical retribution. There are stories about a road near Hebron that was known as Ghost Light Road. I have heard stories about strange thumping noises underneath the car from some people who blamed it on the "ghosts" and I have heard the same thing from some former "grasshoppers" who did the thumping. I have recently heard a story that a young married couple had determined that the spark had gone out of their marriage. Even though they had a house, they decided that the spark could possibly be fanned by returning to the origin of their courtship. They went "parking" and found the old spark again. True story. The drive-in theater was another destination for a young couple seeking some measure of solitude with the family car. Drive-in theaters were great in the summer and you didn't even have to turn the sound on that metal speaker that used to hang on your window. All the cars were parked so that they tilted slightly up in the front for better viewing. Some kids even had their own jalopy. They were revered by their peers. Visiting other cars was common if you knew the occupants and they were otherwise "unoccupied". Also, the car's trunk provided entrance for a couple more guys on "dollar night". As the song goes: "Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end." |
Posted: 16 Apr 2016 05:30 AM PDT Chicago is burning: In the first 100 days of 2016, 857 people were victims of shootings in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune. There were 15 shootings on April 7 alone. The shootings are primarily just west and south of the city center. The city is on pace to exceed the 2,988 shooting victims in 2015 as each month this year has exceeded the total number of shootings per month from the previous year. Every 2 hours and 48 minutes someone in the Windy City is shot. Chicago has some of the nation's worst gun laws, erecting high barriers so ordinary citizens can't protect themselves from rampant gang violence. The Obama Administration's answer for this? Blame it on a neighboring state. On Feb. 15, Valerie Jarrett, Chicago resident and senior adviser to President Obama, appeared on the "Steve Harvey Show" to discuss President Obama's executive orders regarding personally owned firearms. Jarrett pushed Chicago's gun violence on Indiana, stating "right next door you have Indiana" with its loose gun laws. People are buying guns in Indiana and selling them in the "streets of Chicago out of the back of a truck." Jarrett's explanation is an attempt to pass the buck to states that have more reasonable gun laws. Hillary Clinton is trying to use a similar tactic to smear Bernie Sanders, alleging that illegal guns from Vermont are being funneled into New York. But here's the thing. It is absolutely illegal ANYWHERE to buy guns out of the back of a truck. If that's what's happening, then what we have here is a total failure to enforce the law, in a state that has a whole lot of them. That begs the question: if this is true, what practical effect will more laws do to stem the violence when we can't even enforce the ones on the books. The answer is none. What they will do is take guns out of the hands of citizens who have a constitutional right to defend themselves, while drug traffickers and other lowlives use illegal firearms to carry out their black market turf wars. As we're seeing here, when guns are against the law, only outlaws have guns. Source: AAN |

There was some doubt about whether not those who concealed carry would be welcome at the event. The event is supposed to feature presidential candidates such as Donald Trump. The event also will serve alcohol at some venues. The Secret Service, along with Kentucky state laws, threatened to bar concealed carry holders and their firearms from the event. But the NRA was able to craft a concealed carry policy that put it in compliance with both the Secret Service and Kentucky state law. Here's the NRA's official announcement: During the 2016 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits, lawfully carried firearms will be permitted in the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC), in accordance with Kentucky law. Firearms and knives will be prohibited in any areas temporarily under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Secret Service. When carrying your firearm, remember to follow all federal, state and local laws. Please note that under Kentucky law, concealed firearms are prohibited in areas primarily devoted to dispensing alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption, and loaded firearms are prohibited in any room where alcoholic beverages are being sold by the drink. Alcoholic beverages will be served at some events at the Kentucky International Convention Center (KICC), in certain areas of the KFC Yum! Center, and in some smaller venues. The event will feature over 750 exhibitors from all over the firearms industry and shooting sports. There will be everything from ATVs to priceless guns being exhibited. Gabriella Hoffman of Wide Open Spaces also points out that there will be lots of country music there, if you're a fan of that sort of thing. Since it's Kentucky, there will be plenty of Bourbon flowing as well. The cost is free for NRA members, but some events require tickets which cost extra. There will also be an auction of custom rifles and ATVs to benefit the NRA's lobbying arm, the Institute for Legislative Action, at the event. More |
Posted: 16 Apr 2016 01:45 AM PDT When he was running for governor, Larry Hogan talked about guns and gun control about as little as possible. When his opponents in the Republican primary espoused full-throated support for an absolutist interpretation of the Second Amendment, he talked about the need to keep guns away from those with mental illness. When his Democratic opponent in the general election started running attack ads against him featuring images of assault rifles on a playground and in a shopping cart, Mr. Hogan reiterated a promise not to try to overturn the state's gun laws and then changed the subject back to taxes and the economy. But for those who reject the gun lobby's rhetoric that a heavily armed society is a safe one, there was some cause for doubt. During the campaign, the Washington Post reported on gun activists' claims that Mr. Hogan had given them private assurances that he would loosen Maryland's standards for issuing concealed-carry permits, and Mr. Hogan refused repeated requests to release the questionnaire he filled out for the National Rifle Association, which endorsed him and gave him an A- rating. In December, Mr. Hogan was asked by a caller during an appearance on WBAL-AM's C4 show whether he would loosen the restrictions on the issuance of concealed-carry permits for handguns. Maryland not only requires applicants to pass a background check but also that they demonstrate a "good and substantial" reason for carrying a weapon outside the home. Mr. Hogan said his goal was to make it harder for criminals and the mentally ill to possess handguns but easier for everyone else. He bragged that 95 percent of those who applied to the state police for concealed-carry permits were getting them (others questioned that statistic) but lamented that while his administration was "trying to do what we can to make improvements," he was constrained by the legislature. "The law is the law," he said. More |

Posted: 16 Apr 2016 03:00 AM PDT Presents Victim Assistance Awards to Three Deserving Marylanders ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today welcomed hundreds of individuals who provide services and support to Marylanders who have been victims of crime, at the first statewide Maryland Crime Victims' Rights Conference at the DoubleTree Hotel near BWI Airport in Linthicum. The daylong conference, sponsored in part by the Governor's Office of Crime Control & Prevention, provided opportunities for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, victim service providers, nonprofit organizations, and health department officials to learn about new methods to apply a victim-centered approach to every aspect of the criminal justice system in Maryland. "Decades ago, victims were expected to stay on the sidelines of the criminal justice system, but today that is no longer true," said Governor Hogan. "Our administration is committed to helping these individuals rebuild, and creating a criminal justice system that does not exclude crime victims, and holds those who inflict harm accountable for their actions." After delivering opening remarks, Governor Hogan presented Governor's Victim Assistance Awards to three Marylanders who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to assist crime victims. The awards are given in memory of individuals who helped to put crime victims' rights and services on the map in Maryland and nationally. "It is an honor to recognize those who have contributed so much to the crime victims' rights movement here in Maryland—the advocates and counselors, police officers, prosecutors, forensic nurses, hotline workers, and trainers. Thank you for the incredibly selfless work you do," said Governor Hogan, who also presented two governor's proclamations, one proclaiming April 3 as "Crime Victim and Advocate Commemorative Day," and another proclaiming April 10-16 as "Crime Victims' Rights Week" in Maryland. Following the presentation, nine workshops were offered to conference attendees on subjects including human trafficking investigations, justice reinvestment, and identity theft and fraud, among others. |
