World Health Organization under the microscope: what went wrong with coronavirus?

As coronavirus started seeping from its origins in a Wuhan wet market in China late last year, the information coming from the World Health Organization (WHO) was one of dismissal, in line with the Chinese Communist Party's muzzling of the disease's potency.

"Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China," WHO tweeted in January.

Thus, after being left mostly unchecked in those first critical few weeks of inception, coronavirus – officially termed COVID-19 – has since infected upwards of 600,000 people globally and claimed the lives of some 27,000.

Massive deliveries of urns in Wuhan have raised fresh skepticism of China's coronavirus reporting.

As families in the central Chinese city began picking up the cremated ashes of those who have died from the virus this week, photos began circulating on social media and local media outlets showing vast numbers of urns at Wuhan funeral homes.

New York hospitals would use LOTTERIES for ventilators in shortage

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 07:00 PM PDT

State emergency plans to ration ventilators if the coronavirus pandemic worsens are raising thorny ethical questions, as New York considers lotteries for access to the machines and other states contemplate denying them to those with mental disabilities.

The White House says that as yet, no one has been denied a ventilator who needed one. But as the crisis deepens, several states are putting grim plans in place to ration the vital machines.

In New York, the state's ethical guidelines for allocating ventilators in a pandemic call for devoting scarce resources to the patients who are most likely to be saved.

However, the New York report concluded that in the rare case when multiple patients are equally likely to recover, but there are limited resources to help them, hospitals should 'utilize "random selection" (e.g., lottery) methods.'

Over 500 NYC cops have tested positive for coronavirus

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 06:00 PM PDT

More than 500 members of the NYPD have tested positive for the coronavirus as of Friday.

But more than 3,000 cops are reportedly suffering 'flu like symptoms' - an indication that the number of cops who actually have the virus may be exponentially higher, according to new figures obtained by DailyMail.com.

An NYPD report shows that 512 members of the department have tested positive, including 442 uniformed officers and 70 civilian members.

Meanwhile, 4,111 police officers called in sick Friday, accounting for over 11 percent of the nearly 36,000 cops.

Of that number, 3,016 reported they were experiencing flu symptoms. People with the flu can experience congestion, fever, cough, a runny nose, headaches and fatigue - some of the same symptoms associated with COVID-19.

“Don’t come here.” Desantis: Checkpoints at state lines to keep travelers from covid-19 “epicenters” out of the panhandle

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 05:30 PM PDT

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) — Governor Ron DeSantis said during his daily briefing Friday that checkpoints will be set up at state lines in Florida, limiting travel from covid-19 hot spots like Louisiana.

Commercial vehicles would be allowed to move freely. DeSantis said that vacation rentals will also be suspended for two weeks, "if you're coming from one of the epicenters, we probably think you should obey the directions of your state and local officials. And if they are telling you to shelter in place do that but don't come here."

DeSantis says Panhandle communities have relatively low numbers of cases and they want to keep it that way.

The Governor said this is an effort to prevent people from traveling to Florida to escape other "hot spots" of the coronavirus. Details on the checkpoints weren't extremely clear, but DeSantis said people with certain license plates would be diverted and "if they blow through the checkpoints they could be pulled over"

RI State Police, National Guard set up checkpoint to stop, log travelers from NY

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 04:00 PM PDT

HOPKINTON R.I. (WPRI) ─ Rhode Island State Police troopers and National Guard members began actively stopping passenger vehicles with New York license plates on Friday after Gov. Gina Raimondo ordered anyone traveling from the Empire State to the Ocean State to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

Troopers set up a checkpoint on I-95 in Hope Valley where drivers with New York license plates must stop and provide their contact information if they plan on staying in Rhode Island long-term.

Those who do plan to stay in Rhode Island for an extended period of time are ordered to self-quarantine for 14 days before going out in public. Anyone passing through will be allowed to continue on their travels without providing information.

The number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in the New York metro area has grown to more than 30,000 in recent days, which prompted Raimondo to mandate the self-quarantine order.

"We know New York is a hot spot, we know it's a dangerous place," she said.

Ohio Sets All-Mail Primary for April 28

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 03:30 PM PDT

Ohio has set a new, almost exclusively mail-in primary election for April 28 due to the coronavirus, ignoring the timing recommendations of the state elections chief and some voting-rights groups.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed a sweeping relief bill containing the change Friday, though he also had advocated for a different outcome.

"Look, people have a month," the governor said Friday, expressing disappointment a longer window wasn't provided. "We just encourage people to go ahead and fill out the application, send it in, get their ballot and go ahead and vote."

Under the new scenario, the standard in-person primary is off and registered voters who haven't yet cast a ballot will need to apply for an absentee ballot to vote.

Primex Plastics rushes to protect Reid Health employees from COVID-19

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 03:00 PM PDT

RICHMOND, Ind. — Primex Plastics planned delivery at noon Thursday of face shields to protect Reid Health employees during the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

The product, of which Reid has ordered 1,000, did not exist Sunday; yet, four days later, Reid personnel will have face shields that fit firmly around their necks and attach to their Max Air biomedical helmets. The helmets protect against contagious airborne diseases.

"I go home pretty proud of my company and my employees," said Doug Borgsdorf, a Primex Business Unit Director who runs the division producing the shields, by telephone Wednesday.

A church connection brought Reid's need to protect its people to Primex's attention Sunday, and Primex quickly began work. Borgsdorf called it an Apollo 13 moment and an arts and crafts project when serious work began Monday. Apollo 13 because Primex took the materials it had on hand and began brainstorming what might meet Reid's needs. Some extra materials were then bought at the local Joann Fabric and Craft store.

Consulting with Reid, Primex developed 40 samples, Borgsdorf said. Within 48 hours, a prototype was ready, and within 72 hours, production began.

Joseph Lowery, Civil Rights Leader and MLK Aide, Dies at 98

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 02:30 PM PDT

The Rev. Joseph E. Lowery fought to end segregation, lived to see the election of the country's first black president and echoed the call for "justice to roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream" in America.

For more than four decades after the death of his friend and civil rights icon, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the fiery Alabama preacher was on the front line of the battle for equality, with an unforgettable delivery that rivaled King's — and was often more unpredictable. Lowery had a knack for cutting to the core of the country's conscience with commentary steeped in scripture, refusing to back down whether the audience was a Jim Crow racist or a U.S. president.

"We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back; when brown can stick around; when yellow will be mellow; when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right," Lowery prayed at President Barack Obama's inaugural benediction in 2009.

Lowery, 98, died Friday at home in Atlanta, surrounded by family members, they said in a statement.

He died from natural causes unrelated to the coronavirus outbreak, the statement said.

WHO chief's questionable past comes into focus following coronavirus response

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 11:00 AM PDT

The head of the World Health Organization, in charge of making life or death decisions on a grand scale, has been accused of covering up cholera epidemics, supporting a terrorist organization and inflating his resume to claim he conquered malaria and HIV.

Tedros Adhanom Ghegreyesus' campaign to rewrite his questionable past has some wondering whether he is the right fit to lead the global agency through the coronavirus pandemic.

"Tedros is the second-to-last person who should be heading the world World Health Organization at this time," foreign affairs expert Gordon Chang told Fox News. "The last person is (Chinese President) Xi Jinping."

The Ethiopian official, who was elected to lead the WHO in 2017, has been accused of cozying up to countries like China that have pledged millions of dollars to the agency.

Pelosi: Increased Election Funding So There’s ‘More Vote by Mail’

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 10:00 AM PDT

On Friday's broadcast of MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stated that the House is "setting up" to address pensions in the next coronavirus bill, and tied increased election funding so we can have an election with "more vote by mail" to the "coronavirus necessity list" in the House.

Pelosi said, "We need to address pensions. Actually, in that case, we had the support of the president, but not Mitch McConnell. He wouldn't do it. He said he'd do it in another bill. So, we're setting up for the next bill."

America soars past 100,000 coronavirus cases as NYC fights 'catastrophe': One New Yorker dies every 17 minutes and 911 calls hit historic highs amid fears hospitals could collapse in nine days as the Big Apple's death toll hits 450

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:45 AM PDT

The number of coronavirus cases in the United States has soared past 100,000 cases, and the situation in New York City has become increasingly dire as cases continue to explode, with the healthcare system threatened with imminent collapse.

Across the city, sirens wailed late into the night Friday as ambulance crews raced through empty streets from one call to the next. Medical emergency calls were up 40 percent to about 6,500 a day, shattering historical records and leading to up to 170 callers being put on hold at a time, according to EMS union officials.

FDNY officials are strongly urging New Yorkers to call 911 only if they are having urgent emergencies, such as heart troubles or problems breathing. 'Please allow first responders to assist those most in need. Only call 911 if you need help right away,' the department said in a statement.

On both Thursday and Friday, another 85 people died of the virus here, or an average of one New Yorker every 17 minutes. The city's death toll is now 450, and there are 26,697 confirmed cases.

Fauci: Italy "Hit Very Badly" By COVID-19 Due To Prevalence Of Chinese Tourists

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:40 AM PDT

Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to the Trump administration's coronavirus task force, said Thursday that Italy has been impacted particularly badly by the coronavirus pandemic because the country hosted a high number of Chinese tourists in recent months.

"When you look at the different patterns of what happened in different countries, China versus South Korea versus what we're seeing in northern Italy, it really gives you some interesting insight into certain things, not only in the explosive nature in certain places versus others, but as you get to your peak, how do you know when you're turning the corner," Fauci said on CNN.

"It's when the new infections each day start to level off to be the same and then start going down, then you see the curve go down," Fauci said, adding that Italy is "not there yet."

Chinese Companies Reap Huge Profits Making Medical Masks

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:30 AM PDT

Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) reported on Friday that mainland Chinese companies are reaping huge profits selling face masks to combat the virus unleashed upon the world by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

One Chinese manufacturer literally described its operation as a license to print money.

Numerous factories were converted to face mask production in February, as the virus was rampaging across China and beginning to spread across the globe. One of the top customers for Chinese face masks is reportedly Italy, which is suffering through the Western world's worst outbreak of the disease.

According to Chinese data cited by RTHK, some 8,950 manufacturers began producing face masks this year, some of them converting from garment production and other industries that were already working with fabric. They are very pleased with their profits, according to the report:

Coronavirus Legislation Update

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:00 AM PDT

March 27, 2020

Dear Mr. Albero,

I write today to update you with important information about emergency coronavirus legislation. On March 27, 2020, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 748 the  Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. This legislative package, expected to cost over $2 trillion, was crafted to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic by providing direct aid and financial assistance to taxpayers, small businesses, and the healthcare sector. While I had significant concerns about extraneous and wasteful provisions in the bill, it was important to provide urgently needed economic assistance to the American people. Below are a few of the major provisions:

Direct payments to Taxpayers:    The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will determine a taxpayer's eligibility through recent tax filings or their Social Security Benefit Statement. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less ($150,000 if filed jointly), will receive a one-time payment of $1,200 from the Treasury, plus an additional $500 for every child under the age of 17.

For those taxpayers who make more than $75,000 annually ($150,000 if filed jointly), their payment will decrease by $5 for every additional $100 of income. Taxpayers with income exceeding $99,000 ($198,000 if filed jointly) will not receive this financial assistance. The payments will be deposited automatically by the Treasury, if the taxpayer has provided their direct deposit information on their 2018 or 2019 tax filing. If a taxpayer's direct deposit information was not provided, these payments will be sent by check.

Loans and Loan Forgiveness for Small Business:    An additional $350 billion is provided for loans through the Paycheck Protection Program through the Small Business Administration (SBA), to help small employers keep employees on payroll and sustain their business. These loans will be made available to businesses with less than 500 employees, non-profits, contractors and self-employed/sole proprietorships. The SBA will use an eligibility formula in which the loan amount is tied to the business's payroll costs for two-and-a-half months and will max out at $10 million. Allowable use of these loans includes payroll support, salaries, paid sick leave, insurance premiums, rent, mortgages, and utilities. The legislation also waives borrower and lender fees, as well as collateral and personal guarantee requirements. In order to encourage businesses to continue to pay employees, this bill provides loan forgiveness equal to the amount spent on payroll, rent, and utilities during the first eight weeks after the loan is issued.    Small Businesses will be able to apply for this assistance at local banks that provide SBA loans, and additional SBA Disaster Loans are also available for up to $2 million of working capital.

Early Withdrawal from Retirement Accounts:    In order to provide greater flexibility during the pandemic, H.R. 748 also waives the 10% early withdrawal fee from qualified retirement accounts for withdrawals of up to $100,000. These distributions must be made for coronavirus-related hardships, and the income attributed to them will be subject to tax over three years.

I hope this information is helpful.    Please rest assured that, as a physician, I will continue to carefully evaluate all additional responses to coronavirus here in Congress.   To keep up with my work in Congress, visit my website at harris.house.gov and sign up to receive updates atharris.house.gov/contact/newsletter  Should you wish to unsubscribe from my newsletter, you may follow the same link.

Former Sen. Tom Coburn dies, Washington's top waste-watcher

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 08:30 AM PDT

Tom Coburn's reputation preceded him throughout the Capitol — a cantankerous trouble-maker who was tough to work with, and more interested in blowing things up than getting things done. And that reputation was completely wrong, just about everyone who ended up working with him came to quickly realize.

Mr. Coburn, a medical doctor turned politician died overnight at age 72 after a long fight with cancer, according to former staff and colleagues, leaving one of the most substantial legacies in recent congressional history.

With a single amendment to a bill in 2010, he saved the government $262 billion, and counting. He made a cottage industry out of spotting ridiculous-sounding spending items, such as the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere" project in Alaska. His investigative work brought down the largest Social Security disability fraud ring in history.

Employee notice from Nancy & Chuck

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 08:00 AM PDT

EMPLOYEE NOTICE

Due to the current financial situation caused by the Corona Virus and slowdown in the economy, Nancy & Chuck have decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 50 years of age and above on early, mandatory retirement, thus creating jobs and reducing unemployment.

This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early).
Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the Government to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination).

Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers).
A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as the Government deems appropriate.

Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance).

Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the Government.

Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. The Government has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens.

Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your TD, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.

Sincerely,

The Committee for Economic Value of Individual Lives (E.V.I.L.)

PS - Due to Corona Virus, recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, The Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

Rhode Island will knock on doors and stop cars to find New Yorkers to slow the spread of coronavirus

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Rhode Island's governor said Friday that law enforcement officers will stop cars and knock on doors in coastal communities to identify people who've been to New York state, joining other states in restricting the movements of out-of-state visitors to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Kentucky's governor says he is considering closing the border between Kentucky and Tennessee, and checkpoints have been set up in the Florida Keys to restrict access.

"Right now, we have a pinpointed risk that we need to address, and we need to be very serious and that risk is called New York City," said Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo at a news conference Friday.

Starting Saturday, Rhode Island law enforcement officers and the National Guard will be "going door-to-door" in coastal communities, asking people if they've been to New York and requesting their contact information, she said.

The Growing Chaos Inside New York’s Hospitals

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 06:38 AM PDT

Matthew Morrison is a thirty-six-year-old E.R. doctor at BronxCare, a hospital in the South Bronx, which has a large Dominican population. He speaks "medical Spanish," he told me. "Fiebre. Dolor. Náusea. Vómito." On Wednesday, he treated a woman in her mid-sixties with telltale signs of covid-19: fever, shortness of breath, coughing up blood. She was terrified. She told Morrison, with tears in her eyes, "Doctor, no me siento bien." Before admitting her, Morrison gave her the same speech he'd been giving all his patients: "You've come to the right place. We're here for you. Unfortunately, we don't have a specific treatment for covid, but we're able to offer all sorts of supportive care." People were anxious. Another likely covid-19 patient, an older African-American man, had taken a cocktail of medication—Percocet, Benadryl, an antibiotic—to treat his aches and fever, before arriving, disoriented, at the E.R.

New York City has become an epicenter of the crisis, with more than ninety-six hundred confirmed cases as of Sunday, and hospitals are struggling to keep pace. BronxCare workers were in the process of setting up a separate triage tent, to manage covid-19 patients. Until then, the E.R.'s waiting room would be crowded with the "worried well," or, in this case, the worried sick—people with coughs and flulike symptoms that might or might not be signs of covid-19, who'd come because they wanted to get tested. Most were sent back home, with orders to self-quarantine. Tests were being reserved for people sick enough to be hospitalized.
