Former West Virginia University Professor Pleads Guilty to Fraud That Enabled Him to Participate in the People’s Republic of China’s “Thousand Talents Plan”

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 09:00 PM PDT

Dr. James Patrick Lewis, of Fairview, West Virginia, has admitted to a fraud charge involving West Virginia University, the Department of Justice announced.

Lewis, age 54, pleaded guilty to a one-count information charging him with "Federal Program Fraud." From 2006 to August 2019, Lewis was a tenured professor at West Virginia University in the physics department, specializing in molecular reactions used in coal conversion technologies. In July 2017, Lewis entered into a contract of employment with the People's Republic of China through its "Global Experts 1000 Talents Plan." China's Thousand Talents Plan is one of the most prominent Chinese Talent recruit plans that are designed to attract, recruit, and cultivate high-level scientific talent in furtherance of China's scientific development, economic prosperity and national security. These talent programs seek to lure overseas talent and foreign experts to bring their knowledge and experience to China and reward individuals for stealing proprietary information.

"Lewis defrauded a public university into giving him leave, so that he could satisfy his competing obligations to a Chinese institution, which he hid from the school," said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers. "I applaud the increased focus of the academic community to detect conflicts of interest and conflicts of commitment. Only with more transparency will we stem the tide of covert ties to Chinese institutions and programs, ties meant by the Chinese government to result in the transfer of intellectual property from the United States."

"This case represents an attempt to serve China to the detriment of West Virginia University and the United States. Academia is a prime target for these activities and we will remain committed to prosecuting such fraud wherever it is found. I want to thank the FBI, the IRS and our prosecution team for a job well done," said U.S Attorney Bill Powell, Northern District of West Virginia.

"The FBI knows the Chinese government intentionally targets the advanced technologies and technical expertise developed in the U.S. to give itself a competitive advantage in the world marketplace," said FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Robert Jones. "Participation in a talent plan like the one Dr. Lewis was part of is not illegal. But FBI investigations have revealed participants are often incentivized to transfer proprietary information or research conducted in the U.S. to China. This remains a significant threat and a high priority threat for the FBI. We are dedicated to making sure foreign governments know U.S. trade secrets cannot and will not be bought."

According to Lewis's contract, the Chinese Academy of Sciences agreed to employ Lewis as a professor for at least three years. In return, Lewis agreed to maintain an active research program that yielded publications in high quality, peer-reviewed journals, and to provide research training and experience for Chinese Academy of Sciences students.

As a part of the program, Lewis was promised benefits, including a living subsidy of 1 million Yuan (approximately $143,000), a research subsidy of 4 million Yuan (approximately $573,000), and a salary of 600,000 Yuan (approximately $86,000). To receive the benefits, Lewis would have to work full time in China for three consecutive years, for no less than nine months per year, and would have to begin work no later than Aug. 8, 2018.

In March 2018, Lewis submitted a request to WVU for an alternate/parental work assignment, requesting to be released from his teaching duties for the fall 2018 semester in order to serve as the primary caregiver for a child he and his wife were expecting in June 2018. In fact, however, Lewis knew this request was fraudulent. Rather than caring for his newborn child, Lewis planned to work in China during the fall 2018 semester as a part of his agreement with the "1000 Talents Plan." Based on the false justification Lewis offered, WVU granted his request.

In the fall of 2018, Lewis spent all but three weeks of the semester in China while his newborn child remained in the United States. During this period, Lewis received his full salary from WVU pursuant to his alternate/parental work assignment. Lewis's scheme allowed him to fraudulently obtain $20,189 from WVU.

As a part of the plea agreement, Lewis has agreed to pay restitution in the amount of $20,189 in full to WVU. Lewis is no longer employed by WVU, having resigned in August 2019.

Lewis faces up to 10 years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jarod J. Douglas and Trial Attorney Evan N. Turgeon with the Department of Justice's Counterintelligence and Export Control Section, National Security Division, are prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The FBI and the Internal Revenue Service investigated. WVU cooperated in the investigation of this case.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided.

Biden brother accused of using political clout to win high-dollar loan from bankrupt healthcare provider

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:00 PM PDT

Hunter Biden isn't the only Biden family member accused of profiting off his political connections.

James Biden, the younger brother of former Vice President Joe Biden, is embroiled in a big-money loan scandal involving Americore Health, a healthcare provider focused on the acquisition and management of rural hospitals. Americore filed for bankruptcy, allegedly in part because of unfulfilled promises and broken business deals brokered by James Biden.

Former Americore executive Tom Pritchard said Biden promised a large investment from Middle Eastern backers touting his brother's political status. But as the deals faltered and Americore employees and vendors failed to receive payment for their services, Biden quietly backed away from the now-public controversy.

Bloomberg adviser warns of 'scorched earth' retaliation against Trump children if GOP attacks Hunter Biden

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:30 PM PDT

An adviser to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's campaign threatened a "scorched earth" response against President Trump's children if the GOP refuses to back off from Hunter Biden.

During a weekend interview on MSNBC, Timothy O'Brien suggested that Democrats would engage in a media campaign against the Trump children "unlike anything they've experienced thus far" if Republicans continue to investigate and attack the son of Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden.

The comment came after Joy Reid, the host of AM Joy, asked O'Brien to discuss the first family's financial activity during Trump's administration.

The Dems Are Right. Americans Find Annoying Liberal Women Very Annoying.

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:00 PM PDT

Mark your calendars because today is the day Townhall Senior Columnist Kurt Schlichter agreed with Big Chief Warren and Scat Francisco Congresscreature Nancy Pelosi. Yes, they are correct that Americans rejected Sitting Bolshevik because she was a woman, specifically, because she was a very, very annoying woman who, besides her track record of tacky lies, was very, very annoying in a uniquely female way. Putting aside that she is the Bud Light of faculty lounge socialism, Americans had no desire to spend four years with some national librarian in the Oval Office pestering us about using our inside voices and demanding that we share the toys we bought with the kids who broke theirs.

She comes across as hella school-marmy, and the fact is that marms identify as female.

Of course, the male-identifying Crusty Commie Curmudgeon and Not-Senile Joe are annoying too. Like special snowflakes, Democrats are all irritating in their own special ways. But it's true that Warren, and other females like Felonia Milhous von Pantsuit, are tiresome in specific ways unique to women. See, men and women are different, so awful men and awful women can bother us in different ways.

Confirmed: Either Fired FBI Director Comey or His Former Chief of Staff Rybicki Lied About FBI Actions After Comey’s 2017 Valentine’s Meeting with President Trump

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 04:30 PM PDT

Former FBI Director Jim Comey is caught in another lie. His story about the actions he took after meeting with President Trump in the White House in February 2017 are in direct conflict with the story his Chief of Staff, Jim Rybicki, told about the same event.

Crooked cop James Comey said many things about the President of the Unites States whom Comey was spying on and lying to. One of the now apparent lies that Dirty Cop Comey said was when the President had the former and now fired Head of the FBI in the White House on Valentine's Day in February 2017.

CBS reported on Comey's actions on this day:
Feb. 14, 2017: Following a meeting in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump asks Comey to stay behind to "talk about Mike Flynn," according to Comey's testimony. Mr. Trump allegedly tells Comey that Flynn "is a good guy," saying he hopes Comey "can let this go." Comey is noncommittal and briefs senior FBI leadership on the "very concerning" interaction, Comey writes. Comey does not inform DOJ officials about what Mr. Trump said, but implored Attorney General Jeff Sessions to prevent future one-on-one discussions between the two, according to the testimony. Sessions does not reply, Comey says.

New York City's emergency 'surge plan' for a severe pandemic calls for Rikers Island inmates to dig mass graves to bury up to 51,000 bodies as coronavirus cases increase

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 04:00 PM PDT

As more coronavirus cases are reported in New York City, contingency plans are in place to prepare for a worst-case scenario that could see Rikers Island prisoners dig mass graves to bury up to 51,000 bodies.

The city has plans in place for a severe pandemic whose mortality rate of 2.1 per cent would likely produce a need for quick burial of corpses.

The plan was drawn up by the city's Office of Chief Medical Examiner in October 2008 during the administration of then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The report by Charles S. Hirsch, titled 'Pandemic Influenza Surge Plan For Managing In- and Out-of-Hospital Deaths,' details response strategies in case of widespread emergencies on the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu and the 1957 outbreak of Asian Flu.

President Trump secures no-cost virus testing for Americans

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 03:05 PM PDT

The Trump Administration is leading an "all-of-America" approach, as Vice President Mike Pence calls it, to protect Americans during the global Coronavirus outbreak.

"Last week, at this table, the President met with pharmaceutical leaders, we met with nursing home leaders, leaders of commercial labs, airline industries," Vice President Pence said. "We're bringing all of the businesses of the country to bear to protect the health of the American people."

Earlier today, President Trump and the Vice President met with executives from America's largest health insurance companies, where they announced a major deal.

Vice President Pence: We are defending all patients against surprise billing

"I'm pleased to report, as you requested, Mr. President, that all the insurance companies here—either today or before today—have agreed to waive all copays on coronavirus testing and extend coverage for coronavirus treatment in all of their benefit plans," the Vice President said.

Medicare and Medicaid announced recently that beneficiaries will have Coronavirus testing and treatment covered. Now, private insurers have made that commitment, as well.

Insurers also agreed to cover telemedicine services, which will allow all patients—particularly among the vulnerable senior population—to be treated without feeling the need to go to a hospital or doctor's office.

After sitting down with insurance leaders at the White House, the President traveled to Capitol Hill this afternoon, where he and Vice President Pence met with lawmakers. "We just had a meeting on stimulus, and you'll be hearing about it soon. But it was a great meeting," President Trump said.

He also had one important message for Americans during this time: We're prepared.

"Everybody has to be vigilant and has to be careful. But be calm," the President said. Thanks to early preventative measures by the Administration, as well as the strong fundamentals in our economy and job market, America is in great shape to weather any storm.

Judge finds Iran responsible for Robert Levinson’s kidnapping in $1.5B lawsuit

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 02:30 PM PDT

Exactly 13 years after Robert Levinson was abducted in Iran, a federal judge found the Iranian government responsible for kidnapping and torturing the former FBI agent who, if he is still alive, is the longest-held American hostage.

"This case, brought by Levinson's family against the Islamic Republic of Iran for his hostage taking and torture under the terrorism exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, is largely about whether it was the Iranian regime that committed these barbarous acts," U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly ruled on Monday. "The Court finds, in no uncertain terms, that it was."

Levinson's family, including his wife, Christine, and their seven children, filed a lawsuit against Tehran in 2017 after the husband and father had been missing for a decade. They sought $150 million in compensation as well as another $150 million per family member in punitive damages from Iran's government, for a total of $1.5 billion.

Harvey Weinstein lawyers argue his 'fall from grace' is sufficient punishment in request for light sentence

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 02:00 PM PDT

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein argued his current health issues and "fall from grace" are sufficient punishments for raping and sexually assaulting women.

After being found guilty of first-degree sexual assault and third-degree rape in February, Weinstein's lawyers filed a letter on Tuesday ahead of the former producer's Wednesday sentencing, arguing that he be shown mercy with a five-year sentence.

"He has lost his means to earn a living. Simply put, his fall from grace has been historic, perhaps unmatched in the age of social media," they argued, adding that he "cannot walk outside without being heckled."

Many conventions across the country are also being cancelled.

All USM schools to prepare for remote instruction following spring break

ADELPHI, Md. - The University System of Maryland chancellor urged all universities to prepare for students to remain off campus for at least two weeks or longer following spring week, in wake of the coronavirus ourtbreak.

On Tuesday, USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman said the during two weeks after spring break or longer, all USM universities should be prepared to deliver instruction remotely.

Perman released a statement that said in part: "Given this guidance, I understand that USM presidents may need to cancel classes one or more days this week so that students, faculty, and staff can plan for this change in schedule post-spring break. Preparation for campus departures and online instruction will vary among universities, and each USM president therefore has discretion to ensure that faculty and staff have adequate time to set these plans in motion. While this means that some classes may be canceled this week, all campuses will remain open before, during, and after spring break."

Delmarva Power Seeking Rate Increase To Cover Cost Of Modernization

Delmarva Power is asking the Delaware Public Service Commission (PSC) to increase electric and gas rates to offset modernization expenses

In a statement released Monday Delmarva Power said they are requesting that the PSC update electric and natural gas delivery rates to reflect the costs associated with reliability improvements to the local energy grid, along with new technology the company has implemented to meet customer needs and growth in Delaware.

These efforts have resulted in record service reliability for customers and led to the company winning national residential and business customer satisfaction awards, according to Delmarva Spokesman Timothy Stokes.

Stokes said the requests seek to adjust the typical Delaware electric residential customer's monthly bill by about $3.68 and the typical residential natural gas customer's monthly winter bill by about $6.00.

SU COVID-19 UPDATE: Classes canceled Thursday-Friday and important Spring Break announcement

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 12:56 PM PDT

Members of the SU Community,

While no positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) are currently known at SU or on the Eastern Shore, the University continues to make preparations to help prevent the spread of the virus to our area.

Effective immediately, we are implementing guidelines that will take effect in two steps. In the first step, starting today, we will limit meetings and large gatherings, encourage social distancing and remote learning, and prepare those who are able to telework.

In accordance with guidance from the University System of Maryland, classes are canceled this Thursday-Friday, March 12-13, so faculty may prepare for remote (online) instruction. When preparing to leave for Spring Break, students should take with them all essential belongings, including medications and other materials, in case it should become necessary to implement step two of the guidelines, which may include restricting access to campus for an extended time.

From March 23-April 3, instruction will be delivered online in courses for which this is possible. While we do not expect the campus to be closed during this period, we ask that students not return to campus until Saturday, April 4. Please check your campus email, the SU website and the University's Facebook and Twitter pages for announcements regarding any updates.

These measures follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USM and Maryland Department of Health on controlling the spread of the virus by decreasing the potential for human-to-human transmission.

SU also is discouraging its students, faculty and staff from all international and national travel at this time. The threat of COVID-19 will not last forever at its current level. Delaying travel now may prevent you from being infected or becoming a carrier and transmitting the virus to your loved ones, including elderly family members who may be at increased risk.

As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to evolve in Maryland, throughout the U.S. and around the world, SU officials will hold a virtual town hall meeting 1:30-3 p.m. Friday, March 13, to answer questions and provide the most up-to-date information. A live streaming link will be available on the SU COVID-19 webpage, salisbury.edu/coronavirus, prior to the event.

Please monitor SU's COVID-19 webpage for any further updates, including campus communications and event cancellations.

CUOMO ANNOUNCES NEW YORK 'CONTAINMENT AREA' FOR CORONAVIRUS, CLOSES SCHOOLS, BRINGS IN NATIONAL GUARD

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 12:30 PM PDT

To prevent the spread of a new coronavirus, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced places within a containment area where large groups of people gather, including schools, would close for two weeks and the National Guard would be brought in to assist.

New York has seen 173 cases of a new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and is one of three states in the United States experiencing a large outbreak. Thousands of people in New York are under self-quarantine, businesses have told employees to work from home and some schools have chosen to close.

On Tuesday, Cuomo announced that all schools within a "containment area" in New Rochelle will be closed from Thursday until March 25. A specific list of schools wasn't provided, but Dr. Howard Zucker, commissioner of health for New York state, said the "containment area" is defined as a one-mile radius around the area of the Young Israel of New Rochelle Temple. The temple was locked down after Lawrence Garbuz, a congregant, tested positive for the virus.

Berlin Mayor Proposes 4% Property Tax Rate For Council Review

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 11:30 AM PDT

BERLIN – Mayor Gee Williams this week formally proposed a 3.75% tax increase for the coming fiscal year.

On Monday, Williams introduced a proposed property tax rate of $.83 per $100 of assessed value. The increase, which citizens can comment on at a public hearing March 23, comes in the wake of last year's 18% tax hike.

"The process of doing the budget formally begins once the property tax rate has been proposed," Williams said.

According to data regarding possible tax rate scenarios presented at a work session last month, the town's projected property tax revenues for fiscal year 2021 are $3.5 million. A tax increase of 3.75% would bring in an additional $130,879. Though the data reviewed last month included revenue projections for a $.87 tax rate, a $.85 tax rate and a $.83 rate, Williams proposed the latter on Monday. He said now that the rate was introduced, the budget could be developed based on the associated revenue projections.

Governor Hogan's Crime Proposals Pass In Maryland Senate

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 12:10 PM PDT

At the beginning of this legislative session, I told lawmakers that if they accomplished nothing else, they must pass our proposals to hold violent criminals more accountable and put an end to the bloodshed in the streets of Baltimore. This is Marylanders' top priority.

This morning, members of the Maryland Senate came together in bipartisan fashion to approve a number of these proposals, including measures to increase penalties for offenders who repeatedly possess illegal firearms or knowingly transfer a gun to someone who plans to use it in a crime. I want to sincerely thank the Senate for taking action on this emergency legislation.

This fight isn't even close to over yet— these measures will now go to the House of Delegates. I urge Marylanders to continue contacting your representatives and let them know that time is running out: we need action on our crime legislation now.

CDC urges elderly to stock up on food, stay home amid coronavirus fears

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 10:00 AM PDT

Elderly Americans and people with underlying health conditions should stock up on food and prepare to isolate themselves at home since they are the most at risk of getting seriously ill from the coronavirus, a senior health official said Monday.

The advice is part of new recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aimed at the most vulnerable populations and stems partly from a new study of 70,000 Chinese patients with the virus.

"Have enough household items and groceries so that you will be prepared to stay home for a period of time," Nancy Messonnier, a senior CDC official, said in a conference call Monday.

China Threatens to Throw America 'Into the Mighty Sea of the Coronavirus.'

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 09:30 AM PDT

China is threatening to wreak havoc on America's drug supply amid the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. Thanks to our globalist elite and especially missteps during the Obama-Biden administration, Beijing has the power to do just that.

In an article in Xinhua, one of the Chinese Communist Party's mouthpieces, Beijing threatened that it can impose pharmaceutical export controls after which America will be "plunged into the mighty sea of coronavirus."

Unfortunately, Beijing isn't bluffing about this capability.

As Rosemary Gibson, co-author of "China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America's Dependence on China for Medicine," testified to a congressional commission last summer, China has a dominant role in the manufacture of the generic drugs that comprise 90 percent of what Americans take.

New border wall blocks 90% of illegal crossings, up from just 10%

"It changes everything," said Chief Rodney Scott, of the 135-136 miles of new wall, roadways, and high-tech spyware. "There is a huge return on investment," he added.

What Caused Alan Dershowitz to Say That He Now Feels 'Conned' By Obama

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 09:00 AM PDT

Alan Dershowitz admittedly is not the most popular guy within liberal circles, despite having those views. Dershowitz has become one of President Trump's biggest defenders, especially in this past failed impeachment push. It was nonsense. Dershowitz knew it was nonsense and oftentimes he called out Democrats for their overreach in their attacks against this White House. He was part of the president's defense team. Dershowitz also described the discussion among top Department of Justice officials of invoking the 25th Amendment against Trump as nothing short of a coup attempt.

As a result, the liberal lawyer has admitted to being left off the invite list of many dinner parties he used to attend. He isn't fazed. Now, in an interview with The Daily Wire's Ben Shapiro, Dershowitz feels he was "conned" by Barack Obama and is now having buyer's remorse for voting for him in 2012. Why? It's not a shocker. Obama threw Israel under the bus, but more importantly, that action was seen as a green light for the anti-Semitic agents that infest the Democratic Party to make Jew-bashing the norm. Dershowitz said in private discussions, Obama promised to defend the Jewish State and the Middle East's only democracy to the hilt—and did the exact opposite. Also, there is a rather interesting tidbit Dershowitz alleges concerning an FBI investigation request by Obama at the behest of lefty billionaire George Soros. The Blaze has more:
"I think President Obama, for whom I voted twice, and would now reconsider my second vote for him, he conned me," he said. "He called me into the Oval Office and he said 'I have Israel's back' and I didn't realize what he meant is to put a target on it and stab them," Dershowitz said, referring to former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power's abstention vote during a December 2016 vote condemning Israel.

Pelosi: Trump reelection puts 'civilization as we know it' at risk

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 08:30 AM PDT

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said President Trump getting reelected could endanger Western civilization.

As the California Democrat was speaking at Northeastern's Women Who Empower Summit in Boston, Massachusetts, on Monday, she emphasized to attendees that she felt the results of the upcoming 2020 election would have negative, rippling effects across the globe.

"This election is a very important election. In my view, civilization as we know it is at stake. It's about everything. It's about America," Pelosi said.

Virginia Democrats Prepare to Give Illegal Aliens ‘Driver Privilege Cards’

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 08:00 AM PDT

Elected Democrats in Virginia are preparing to give thousands of illegal aliens residing in the state "driver privilege cards" that allow them to freely drive without being pulled over by police for driving without a license.

This weekend, state Senate Democrats in Virginia passed legislation to allow thousands of the roughly 300,000 illegal aliens living in the state to obtain driver privilege cards that will allow them to drive vehicles.

The legislation mandates illegal aliens to file a tax return or be listed as a dependent on a tax return in order to obtain the driver privilege card. Proponents of the plan said the card will explicitly state that those with the card are not eligible to vote in elections.

'Lead by example': House Democrat demands 2020 campaigns halt public events over coronavirus

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 07:30 AM PDT

As 2020 campaigns struggle to earn every delegate possible, Rep. Jackie Speier urged candidates to stay home and avoid a possible coronavirus outbreak.

Large events around the nation are being put on hold as states scramble to prevent the spread of coronavirus. In a tweet posted Monday afternoon, Speier argued that campaign events should follow suit.

"Until we know the extent of the community spread of the coronavirus, I call on ALL candidates for President to stop holding public rallies & large scale events. The CDC has been absolutely clear, people should not congregate in large groups," the California Democrat tweeted. "The candidates must lead by example!"

Illegal Alien Issued Ticket for “Careless Driving” After Killing Mother, Two Children and Grandmother Near Walt Disney World

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Thank a Democrat.

An illegal alien was cited with a ticket for "careless driving" after he rear-ended a van and nearly killed an entire family spanning three generations near Disney in Florida.

The driver of a truck that killed a mother, two of her children and the grandmother was in the US illegally, according to authorities.

Two other children, their father and grandfather who were also in the minivan survived.

But after killing 4 people, Lucas Dos Reis Laurindo was only cited with a ticket, the strongest charge that could be made under Florida law.

Hillary Clinton descends into full-blown anti-Facebook paranoia

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:45 AM PDT

Hillary Clinton has descended into full-blown anti-Facebook paranoia, claiming this weekend that the popular social media site has "aided and abetted" its takeover by the "right-wing echo chamber."

It is funny because she had no problem with Facebook in 2016, back when her failed campaign was mining its user data. Clinton certainly had little to say about the site back when its employees donated more than $114,000 to her 2016 campaign.

But that was then, and this is now. Between 2016 and now, Clinton lost a winnable election, so now, Facebook is the bad guy.

Maryland Delegates To Move Forward With Removing Plastic Bags From Stores

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:39 AM PDT

Yesterday I spoke with Delegate Carl Anderton referencing the removal of plastic bags in the state of Maryland. It has been proposed in committee and has passed. Next week the House will vote yay or nay.

Carl informed me that they thought this one out a lot better then when they removed the Styrofoam containers. In the case of the plastic bags they are proposing paper bags as a replacement with NO FEE from the state.

If the House and Senate pass this legislation it will go into effect in July of 2021. What many people don't realize is how difficult it is to separate these bags at the landfill. It has to be done manually and it is a huge expense across the state. It also gums up very expensive equipment and needless to say millions of these bags become airborne and pollute the environment.

One of the solutions is this recycled grocery bag and I have to say in most cases right now even I use them. They're easy to work with and they last for years.

So what's your thoughts on the state removing plastic bags from stores?

Md. lawmaker wants slowpokes out of left lane

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:30 AM PDT

Maryland State Delegate Neil Parrott (R-2A) drives on Interstate 70 enough to know "no one in Maryland knows that you should stay to the right" while driving on a multilane highway.

"[It's] the wild, wild West when you're on I-70," said Parrott, of Hagerstown. "Some people are passing on the far right lane."

Parrott is pushing a bill that would encourage drivers to stay in the right lanes unless they are passing. Parrott, who owns his own traffic consulting business, hopes his bill will, to some degree, make things a little more orderly on the roads.

Russian immigrant asks Bernie Sanders if his socialism will 'have the same results' in US

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:15 AM PDT

A Russian immigrant challenged Sen. Bernie Sanders's version of socialism, asking the 2020 Democrat if his agenda as president of the United States would echo Soviet policies in Russia.

A woman identified as Margaret asked Sanders at a Fox News town hall in Dearborn, Michigan, on Monday, "As someone from Russia, a country that was greatly impacted by the negative effects of socialism, what assurances can you offer myself and other people impacted by socialism that Democratic socialism will not have the same results?"

The Vermont senator responded by denying that the Soviet Union was a socialist country and asserted that real socialism could be found in countries such as Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.

Baltimore’s Gun Crime Failures Tracked in Maryland Public Policy Institute Study

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:00 AM PDT

Maryland legislators have been making progress on bipartisan bills intended to help fight Baltimore's crime scourge. While not as complete as the full package originally proposed by Governor Hogan and the Republican caucus, significant components have remained. The Violent Firearm Offenders Act (SB273) was amended to include language from Sen. Mike Hough (R-Frederick) making the theft of a firearm a felony and increasing penalties for repeatedly illegally possessing a firearm, knowingly giving a gun to someone who plans to commit a crime and using a gun while drug trafficking.[i]

Other parts of the crime package address witness intimidation by making it easier for prosecutors to admit prior statements in court.[ii] Also, annual reporting on circuit court judge decisions will increase judicial transparency.[iii] However, the mandatory minimum sentences originally proposed by Governor Hogan were watered down significantly.[iv]

The legislature's actions represent the "Good News." However, the "Bad News" is that even as crime has soared since the 2015 riots, Baltimore's criminal justice system fails to use the law enforcement tools already available to it.

Trump reportedly told aides he fears journalists will purposefully try to infect him with coronavirus on Air Force One

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:00 AM PDT

President Trump puts on a brave face when talking about the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, but things are reportedly pretty different behind closed doors.

Vanity Fair reports that Trump — a self-professed germaphobe — is "melting down over this." Perhaps not shockingly, he's focused on the media, in particular, one person close to the White House said. That reportedly includes him telling aides last week that he was concerned journalists would purposefully contract COVID-19 in an attempt to infect him on Air Force One.

Another source painted an image more in line with Trump's public reaction to the virus, as well, telling Vanity Fair he reportedly wants the Justice Department to "open an investigation of the media for market manipulation" as he tries to stave off, or at least provide a more optimistic outlook for, the plummeting stock market.

CNN labels coronavirus a pandemic ahead of WHO and CDC

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

CNN announced Monday the news organization will start referring to the coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic even though several global health organizations have not yet labeled the crisis as such.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the network's chief medical correspondent, revealed the network's reasoning in an online post. Gupta said the change in vernacular is "not a decision we take lightly," and notes that "it should not cause panic."

Neither the World Health Organization nor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have labeled the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
