Northam says school division leaders will decide how they'll educate their students through the end of the school year, and the state's department of education will issue guidance. Traces of new coronavirus were found on surfaces in cruise-ship cabins for as many as 17 days after passengers left, researchers said, though it wasn't possible to determine whether they caused any infections. Researchers looked at the rooms of infected passengers aboard the Diamond Princess, both those who showed symptoms and those who didn't, according to a study Monday in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. LARRY BRILLIANT SAYS he doesn't have a crystal ball. But 14 years ago, Brilliant, the epidemiologist who helped eradicate smallpox, spoke to a TED audience and described what the next pandemic would look like. At the time, it sounded almost too horrible to take seriously. "A billion people would get sick," he said. "As many as 165 million people would die. There would be a global recession and depression, and the cost to our economy of $1 to $3 trillion would be far worse for everyone than merely 100 million people dying, because so many more people would lose their jobs and their health care benefits, that the consequences are almost unthinkable." Now the unthinkable is here, and Brilliant, the Chairman of the board of Ending Pandemics, is sharing expertise with those on the front lines. We are a long way from 100 million deaths due to the novel coronavirus, but it has turned our world upside down. Brilliant is trying not to say "I told you so" too often. | Justice Department Reportedly Asks Congress for Indefinite Detention Powers Posted: 23 Mar 2020 09:30 AM PDT The Justice Department is using the COVID-19 outbreak to press for sweeping new powers that include being able to detain Americans indefinitely without a trial, Politico reports. The department is asking Congress to allow the U.S. attorney general to ask courts to suspend court proceedings. These include "any statutes or rules of procedure otherwise affecting pre-arrest, post-arrest, pre-trial, trial, and post-trial procedures in criminal and juvenile proceedings and all civil process and proceedings," reports Betsy Woodruff Swan, citing DOJ documents presented to Congress. In other words, the Justice Department would be able to postpone trials, hearings, and other procedural steps that follow arrest. That represents a potentially huge violation of the constitutional right to a speedy trial. This guy is a fool and risking the lives of millions of Marylander's, especially the elderly. As for the financial relief of businesses, the funding he's proposed wouldn't last a DAY in this state. It may sound like a lot of money to some but for those of us in business it's a joke. But that day, the very day of the Governor's proclamation of a State of Emergency, that was the day that I suggested the Maryland General Assembly adopt a budget and adjourn immediately. I even said at the time; There is also the human factor of all of this too. Every day the General Assembly is in session, hundreds of people are still milling around the State House. Essential personnel. Police. Credentialed Media. Legislators. It only takes one person being infected in that building to create a serious problem. If legislators get infected, they take it back to their families, their homes, and their district. That's how you wind up with the virus being spread even further.Is that price one Democrats are really willing to pay to get a tax hike? Sometimes I hate being right. Sunday morning, the number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. had reached over 26,747 with at least 340 deaths, with the highest number of coronavirus infections in New York, Washington, and California. In New Jersey, which has some 1,300 cases and at least 16 deaths, Gov.
