FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 15, 2020
Talbot County Announces First Confirmed Case of COVID-19
Easton, MD – County Council President Corey Pack has announced that Talbot County will declare a local State of Emergency on Monday following the confirmation by Health Officer Dr. Fredia Wadley that the county has its first confirmed case of COVID-19 disease.
The patient has been hospitalized after coming into contact with a person in another county infected with the COVID-19 virus. When the Talbot County resident developed symptoms, they were tested and found to be positive for the virus.
"Staff from the Health Department are contacting those who have been exposed to this person and, if they have symptoms, we are asking them to take appropriate measures," says Dr. Fredia Wadley. "The proven public health method of managing the spread of such an infection is to identify cases and then isolate them and the people with whom they have had contact."
To support the Health Department's efforts in leading this response, Talbot County Emergency Services has activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC). This coalition of community partners is working together to coordinate the county's response and disseminate information about this public health crisis.
"We are in frequent contact with county and state officials and our private-sector partners," says Director of Emergency Services Clay Stamp. "We are reviewing plans and deciding the best course of action to keep the residents of Talbot County safe and informed."
The Talbot County EOC will be releasing information about the virus, including any new confirmed cases. Staff are currently posting information on the Talbot County Emergency Services website and on the DES Facebook page as it becomes available. The department also expects to launch a dedicated COVID-19 website this week that will summarize all of the county information and will allow hourly updates when indicated to keep residents informed.
"Our goal is to provide you with information that is timely, accurate, and credible," says Stamp. "As soon as new cases are confirmed, we will immediately update the website and our Facebook page to reflect the number of confirmed cases in our county."
Having a proven case of the virus in Talbot County of a person who has not traveled elevates official's concerns. Healthcare professionals stress that elderly people with chronic conditions and those with weakened immune systems should avoid crowds and people who are sick.
"This new development underscores the need for increased testing," says Dr. Wadley. "Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever, and shortness of breath should call their primary care physician immediately."
Talbot County government offices will be closed to the public effective Tuesday, March 17. All staff will report for duty as assigned and will be answering phone calls and emails.

ANNAPOLIS, MD—In light of the serious public health emergency created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Hogan has issued an emergency order to close all Maryland casinos, racetracks, and simulcast betting facilities to the general public indefinitely."This situation continues to evolve and will escalate rapidly and dramatically," said Governor Hogan. "These are unprecedented actions in an extraordinary situation, but they could be the difference in saving lives and keeping people safe."

The following properties are affected by the governor's emergency order, which takes effect at midnight on Monday, March 16, 2020 and will remain in effect until the state of emergency has been terminated or until superseded by other orders:

Additionally, Governor Hogan reiterated that failure to follow his order prohibiting large gatherings is a crime, and will be enforced if businesses fail to comply.

"It is critical to public health and safety that bars, restaurants, and other businesses across the state comply with the law," said Governor Hogan. "Anyone who hosts or is part of the crowds in bars this weekend is jeopardizing the health of others and must avoid any contact with family members or friends over the age of 60 or those with underlying health conditions."

We encourage members of the business community to reach out with their questions by sending a message to Secretary.Commerce@maryland.gov.

OPINION NEWT GINGRICH: I AM IN ITALY AMID THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS. AMERICA MUST ACT NOW—AND ACT BIG

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 07:59 AM PDT

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic poses two threats: public health and economic.
I am living in Italy, where my wife, Callista, is the ambassador to the Holy See.
I have watched first-hand as the Italian government has worked hard to contain the coronavirus by imposing strong public health measures to try to get the epidemic under control. These measures will lead to significant economic challenges.
As I write:
  • All schools are closed in all of Italy.
  • All churches are closed (including St. Peter's Basilica).
  • All weddings and funerals are postponed.
  • All restaurants are closed.
  • In fact, all stores except grocery stores and pharmacies are closed.
  • People are urged to work from home unless they work in special designated factories

Maryland Delegates To Move Forward With Removing Plastic Bags From Stores

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Yesterday I spoke with Delegate Carl Anderton referencing the removal of plastic bags in the state of Maryland. It has been proposed in committee and has passed. Next week the House will vote yay or nay.

Carl informed me that they thought this one out a lot better then when they removed the Styrofoam containers. In the case of the plastic bags they are proposing paper bags as a replacement with NO FEE from the state.

If the House and Senate pass this legislation it will go into effect in July of 2021. What many people don't realize is how difficult it is to separate these bags at the landfill. It has to be done manually and it is a huge expense across the state. It also gums up very expensive equipment and needless to say millions of these bags become airborne and pollute the environment.

One of the solutions is this recycled grocery bag and I have to say in most cases right now even I use them. They're easy to work with and they last for years.

So what's your thoughts on the state removing plastic bags from stores?

SU COVID-19 UPDATE: Classes canceled Thursday-Friday and important Spring Break announcement

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Members of the SU Community,

While no positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) are currently known at SU or on the Eastern Shore, the University continues to make preparations to help prevent the spread of the virus to our area.

Effective immediately, we are implementing guidelines that will take effect in two steps. In the first step, starting today, we will limit meetings and large gatherings, encourage social distancing and remote learning, and prepare those who are able to telework.

In accordance with guidance from the University System of Maryland, classes are canceled this Thursday-Friday, March 12-13, so faculty may prepare for remote (online) instruction. When preparing to leave for Spring Break, students should take with them all essential belongings, including medications and other materials, in case it should become necessary to implement step two of the guidelines, which may include restricting access to campus for an extended time.

From March 23-April 3, instruction will be delivered online in courses for which this is possible. While we do not expect the campus to be closed during this period, we ask that students not return to campus until Saturday, April 4. Please check your campus email, the SU website and the University's Facebook and Twitter pages for announcements regarding any updates.

These measures follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USM and Maryland Department of Health on controlling the spread of the virus by decreasing the potential for human-to-human transmission.

SU also is discouraging its students, faculty and staff from all international and national travel at this time. The threat of COVID-19 will not last forever at its current level. Delaying travel now may prevent you from being infected or becoming a carrier and transmitting the virus to your loved ones, including elderly family members who may be at increased risk.

As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to evolve in Maryland, throughout the U.S. and around the world, SU officials will hold a virtual town hall meeting 1:30-3 p.m. Friday, March 13, to answer questions and provide the most up-to-date information. A live streaming link will be available on the SU COVID-19 webpage, salisbury.edu/coronavirus, prior to the event.

Please monitor SU's COVID-19 webpage for any further updates, including campus communications and event cancellations.

Troopers Arrest Delmar Man for Aggravated Menacing and Weapon Charges-Delmar

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:01 AM PDT

Delmar- The Delaware State Police have arrested 42-year-old Ronald A. Brown of Delmar, DE on aggravated menacing and related charges.

On December 17, 2019, the Delaware State Police were made aware of an incident involving Ronald Brown. Further investigation revealed that the incident occurred on October 23, 2019 at Brown's residence located in the 14000 block of Whitesville Road, Delmar, DE. A 39-year-old male acquaintance of Brown's responded to his residence to retrieve money to complete mechanical work. As the victim entered Brown's residence, an argument over the amount of money ensued. Brown grabbed the victim and proceeded to display a handgun while threatening the victim.

On March 9, 2020 a Sussex County Grand Jury indicted Ronald Brown for Aggravated Menacing and Possession of a Firearm during the commission of a Felony.

On March 10, 2020 Brown turned himself in at Troop 4. He was arraigned before the Sussex County Superior Court and released on $20,000 unsecured bond. A no contact order was also issued with the victim in this case.

Md. lawmaker wants slowpokes out of left lane

"[It's] the wild, wild West when you're on I-70," said Parrott, of Hagerstown. "Some people are passing on the far right lane."

Parrott is pushing a bill that would encourage drivers to stay in the right lanes unless they are passing. Parrott, who owns his own traffic consulting business, hopes his bill will, to some degree, make things a little more orderly on the roads.

Barnes and Bias is not Noble

Joe, my wife and I stopped into Barnes & Noble Saturday evening and I was enraged to see no less than 23 anti-President Trump books placed in the best sellers and new book showcase at the front of the store. There were 2 books that could have been classified Pro Trump . I confronted a man at the counter and told them they had sunk to a new low and this is ridiculous bias against our president in which he responded "Good and ran away to the back of the store) . I was there at least 20 more minutes and he never returned. I also noticed extreme bias for Obama and separate sections for Trevor Noah and Oprah Winfrey and of course none of president Trumps books were anywhere to be found nor any prominent authors with conservative views. Barnes and Noble should be boycotted by all Trump supporters until they at least make an effort to be fair . The Bias is extreme and sickening!

A Viewer Writes......Corona virus - stupidest idea yet

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Colleges around the country (including SU) are closing classes and in some cases campuses and going online only for the remainder of the semester.

Why I think this is the STUPIDEST idea yet:

1) The students are apparently at little to no risk themselves from the virus, they either won't get it or will have mild to no symptoms (that is part of the problem) so there is no need to cancel classes to protect the students.

2) The students are not at risk BUT they pose a risk to others, however cancelling live classes does not mean the students go into hibernation or become hermits - NO - they go to the coffeehouses, libraries, public buildings and spaces. They pour out of the no-risk enclave of the college into the community. My niece reported that after live classes were cancelled at her NYC college there were huge parties on and off campus! So much for preventing gatherings where the virus could be spread!

3) Students are capable of spreading the virus to vulnerable folks -- old and/or ill folks. Those are the people who should be "cocooned", self-quarantined, in hibernation or otherwise protected.

What should happen: Folks who are not in a high-risk group should go about their normal business, wash their hands frequently, stop buying up all the toilet paper, behave rationally, and check in (by phone) on their neighbors, friends, and relatives in high-risk groups. They should send their high-risk neighbors supplies as needed and provide (by phone) moral support and comfort. They should help monitor their high- risk neighbors' health and alert medical authorities if those folks seem to become ill. They should re-assure their high-risk neighbors that they can self-quarantine safely because they will not be forgotten or abandoned.

Other Local Media Sources Trying To Convince The Public Salisbury's Downtown Construction Is A Good Thing

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:01 AM PDT

Oh let's cut the BS. Businesses are leaving in desperation. Yet local media sources are trying to make it sound like there's a prize at the end of the day. No there's not! Many of these businesses have mortgages and have no choice but to stick it out or lose their property. Kuhns Jewelers was Downtown for ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY YEARS! They had to pack up and get the hell out of there.

It's the INFRASTRUCTURE Mayor Jake Day is replacing. Water and sewer lines. There will be nothing better about Downtown. You'll still have parking meters and guess what, LESS PARKING when all is said and done. And they have't even made it to the Downtown Plaza.

The media is putting lipstick on a pig. Salisbury Maryland is a crime infested dump with a corrupt police department and yes, even a states attorneys office.

Please, do tell me how all this construction will improve business when it's complete in a couple years. What will be so interesting that people will have this undying desire to come Downtown. This should get interesting.

Olive Garden hostess, 16, resigns and plans to sue after manager granted customer's racist demands to have a white server

The chain revealed that that they had fired the location's manager after learning how they handled the altercation.

But Amira says that after the manager was terminated, her co-workers began making derogatory comments about her.

Coronavirus Closings: Maryland Public Schools To Close March 16-27

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Schools across Maryland are preparing for a possible outbreak as COVID-19 has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, officials announced all public schools in the state will be closed next week and through Friday, March 27. School-sanctioned travel is also canceled.

All schools and school buses will be cleaned during the two weeks without classes, officials said. Schools are being asked to use spring break days as make-up days.

"Administrators, faculty, staff and parents and guardians should begin to immediately prepare for and to put into place measures for the continuity of educational services during a prolonged period of school closure," State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon said. "Plans regarding childcare services are being developed by the state Department of Education at this time to ensure that the children of emergency services personnel, particularly those who are working in our health care facilities, will have access to childcare through a prolonged period of school closure."

Delmarva Power Seeking Rate Increase To Cover Cost Of Modernization

Delmarva Power is asking the Delaware Public Service Commission (PSC) to increase electric and gas rates to offset modernization expenses

In a statement released Monday Delmarva Power said they are requesting that the PSC update electric and natural gas delivery rates to reflect the costs associated with reliability improvements to the local energy grid, along with new technology the company has implemented to meet customer needs and growth in Delaware.

These efforts have resulted in record service reliability for customers and led to the company winning national residential and business customer satisfaction awards, according to Delmarva Spokesman Timothy Stokes.

Stokes said the requests seek to adjust the typical Delaware electric residential customer's monthly bill by about $3.68 and the typical residential natural gas customer's monthly winter bill by about $6.00.

Coronavirus is coming EVERYWHERE says Tony Fauci as he warns the event calls for 'all hands on deck' and says people need to prepare NOW but stops short of backing closing schools - for now

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Top national disease expert Anthony Fauci is urging the nation to take an 'all hands on deck' approach to the coronavirus – and urging officials to plan for immediate measures even in states that haven't had cases show up yet.

'It doesn't matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case,' Fauci said at a press briefing with Vice President Mike Pence Tuesday. 'You have to start taking seriously what you can do now that if and when the infections will come – and they will come – sorry to say, sad to say, they will,' he told reporters.

'Everybody should say all hands on deck, this is what we need to do,' said Fauci, a top expert on infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health who has served in the government for decades.

Fauci said coronavirus cases continue to add up globally, and said the administration was paying 'paying particular attention to the cases in Europe, Italy and France.' Italy is currently in a nation-wide lockdown for the disease, which first emerged in China.

Maryland State Police Arrest Caroline County Woman On Child Sex Charges

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

(KENT COUNTY, MD) – Maryland State Police have arrested and charged a woman with sexual offenses involving a teenager in Kent County.

The suspect is identified as Brittney Lyles, 29, of Ridgley, Maryland. Lyles was arrested Friday following an investigation by State Police. She was charged with two counts of fourth-degree sex offense, sex abuse of a minor, contributing to certain conditions of a child, and other related offenses. She was taken before a District Court commissioner in Talbot County for a bond hearing and is being held without bond at the Talbot County Detention Center.

An investigation into Lyles was initiated March 4 by the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division, Upper Shore Region. According to a preliminary investigation, the alleged offenses occurred in February 2020. Investigators have learned Lyles was working as a teacher at the Kent County Alternative School Program at the time of the alleged incidents. She is not an employee of Kent County Public Schools.

According to the investigation, none of the alleged activities between Lyles and the victim, a 17-year-old male, occurred on school property. It is believed Lyles picked up the victim in her vehicle from an off campus location before taking him to another location where the offenses occurred.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Maryland State Police Easton Barrack at 410-822-3101.

GOP Gov. Hogan: Trump Hasn’t Communicated the Way I Would Like Him to on Coronavirus

Governor Larry Hogan (R-MD) said on Sunday's broadcast of NBC's "Meet the Press" that President Donald Trump had not communicated the way he would prefer on the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Host Chuck Todd asked, "Are you concerned the president may undermine the efforts of the federal response?"

Hogan said, "Look, I think it was a really smart move for the president to elevate Vice President Pence to work across all the different agencies and to coordinate. As a former governor, he knows the governors are on the front lines. He is doing, I think, a good job of coordinating everybody and communicating with us. I think that's the way the messaging ought to go. Has the president been perfect in his communication? I would say he hasn't communicated the way I would and the way I might like him to. But I think the rest of the team has been doing a pretty good job."

Confederate statues in Virginia may soon be subject to removal after the Democratic-led state House and Senate passed legislation over the weekend that would undo a law that blocks the removal of public war memorials.

The legislation includes exceptions for cemeteries and the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, which has a statue of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson. The bill also contains steps a locality must take before removing a monument.

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Joe,

I've had issues as many others regarding the tearing down, defacing and ultimate removal of Historical Statues; particularly those from the Civil War.

As most readers realize, the Conflict that tore at the very fabric of our country was fought for various economic reasons.

Those who survived those horrific battles, Widows and Orphans used their meager incomes to erect these monuments to remind those who walk in the future, the great conflict that once existed.

Democrats later formed the KKK and continued to destroy lives long after the war up to the 21st Century.

Now progressive Democrats attempt to continue distraction by erasing this history; to keep most folks from learning of their evil desires on men and women.

I'm in wonder why the Historic societies are not standing their ground in preserving this history.

I also find it appalling we allow lawmakers LIKE HOGAN) to tear down these monuments.
If progressive Law Makers can get away with this , than it will not be long before they disarm the population and enter your home upon their written laws.

I'm eager to read what other Patriots have to say regarding these ignorant INCIDENTS happening at a fast rate by Progressives who hate the USA.

Who Married Lee Boyd Malvo? D.C. Sniper And Wife Are ‘Soul Mates’ After Prison Wedding

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:01 AM PDT

The famous saying that love is blind may get put to the test after it was reported that one half of the infamous two-man team of snipers who killed multiple people in the D.C. metropolitan area nearly 20 years ago has gotten married. Lee Boyd Malvo, the baby-faced literal assassin who was found guilty for his role in killing 10 people and wounding three others in targeted long distances shootings in 2002, exchanged nuptials with a woman while he is serving life sentence in prison.

Malvo, who was 17 when he and John Allen Muhammad — who was executed in 2009 — terrorized an entire region for nearly a month by using a high-powered rifle to kill people at random by shooting people from the back of their car, got married at the Red Onion State Prison in Virginia last week, the Washington Post reported. While the identity of Malvo's bride was not revealed, one of his lawyers told the Post that she is an "educated" and "very impressive young lady." Craig S. Cooley went on to say that he believes "they are soul mates. She sees the good and sees Lee as I've always seen him, and I think the world would have seen him had Muhammad not taken over his life."

Malvo's adviser, who the Associated Press reported has served as the now-35-year-old man's mentor since his trial in 2003, went a bit further than Cooley did.

Biden Shouts at Plant Worker Over Guns During Campaign Stop

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:01 AM PDT

Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden got into a heated exchange with a plant worker during a stop at a Detroit auto plant on Tuesday morning.

Walking through the crowd of hardhat donning employees while shaking hands and smiling for photos, Biden stopped abruptly to have a brief but tense and unpleasant encounter with one worker who wanted to discuss guns. The man questioned why Biden wanted to take his Second Amendment rights away which caused him to become immediately enraged as he began to shove his finger in the auto plant worker's face.

The former vice president could be heard shouting at the man over the noise of the large crowd that he would "take the AR-14s away," before trying to move on quickly. Biden then threatened to slap the man in the face and called him a "horse's ass." A campaign worker attempted to diffuse the situation by shouting "Thank you!" repeatedly but Biden dug in.

IS JORGE DELGADO REALLY A REPUBLICAN?

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:01 AM PDT

If you live in Maryland, I'm sure you've heard about of the primary challenge against MD01 Congressman Andy Harris by Jorge Delgado.

This relatively young former congressional staffer has based his entire campaign on what he calls a poor voting record by "do-nothing" Harris. Particularly, the vote against H.R. 1327, the so-called 9/11 Victims Compensation fund, is Delgado's go-to talking point.

In actuality, H.R. 1327 was a sixty year blank check being written to 600,000 people who rented or leased an apartment in lower Manhattan up to one year and three months after 9/11, not anyone who was a first responder or involved with the post-9/11 cleanup effort.

Harris' vote against that pork barrel drew widespread bipartisan backlash, despite its pork barrel effect and overreaching the authority of congress. Congress already passed a bill for first responders that they review and renew every five years to ensure that the money is going where it is supposed to and being spent properly. H.R. 1327 did not do that.

Governor Hogan Announces Major Actions to Protect Public Health, Limit Spread of COVID-19 Pandemic (3-12-2020)

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

From the Office of Governor Larry Hogan

Governor Hogan Announces Major Actions to Protect Public Health, Limit Spread of
COVID-19 Pandemic
National Guard Activated; MEMA Activation Level Raised; Mass Gatherings Prohibited; Cruise Terminal at Port of Baltimore Closed
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced a series of major actions to protect public health and safety and limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Maryland. Earlier today, the state reported its first case of community transmission.
"This problem continues to evolve and will escalate rapidly and dramatically," said Governor Hogan. "For Marylanders, the actions I have announced here today will be disruptive to your everyday lives. They may seem extreme, and they may sound frightening. But they could be the difference in saving lives and keeping people safe."
"It is impossible at this time to know how long this threat will continue," the governor continued. "What I do know is that my first and highest priority is protecting the health, the safety, and the welfare of the people of Maryland. We are all in this together, and we cannot stop the spread of this virus without each and every one of you doing your part. But I want you all to know that we will get through this together. Our state has already faced and overcome daunting challenges before, and we will do so again."
Below is a comprehensive list of the actions announced today:

RAISING MEMA ACTIVATION LEVEL TO FULL: Governor Hogan raised the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) activation level to full, meaning that the State Emergency Operations Center is now operating at its highest level and that there will be full coordination of state response activities and resources.
ACTIVATION OF NATIONAL GUARD: The governor directed the National Guard to move to a higher state of readiness in order to carry out any necessary emergency functions, such as food distribution or other critical areas of need. Read the executive order.
PROHIBITION ON MASS GATHERINGS AND CLOSURE OF SENIOR CENTERS: Effective immediately, gatherings of more than 250 people, including social, community, spiritual, religious, recreational, leisure, and sporting gatherings, are prohibited at all locations and venues. Read the executive order.
  • Planned large gatherings and events must be canceled or postponed until after termination of the state of emergency and the proclamation of the catastrophic health emergency has been rescinded.
  • All senior citizen activities centers shall be closed beginning on Friday, March 13, 2020 until after termination of the state of emergency and the proclamation of the catastrophic health emergency has been rescinded.
CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS: Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) State Superintendent Karen Salmon is directing that beginning on Monday, March 16, all schools throughout Maryland will close through Friday, March 27, 2020. Read the MSDE press release
  • During the time of school closure, all school buildings and school buses should be cleaned and disinfected to prevent spread of the virus upon the return of students and staff to school. MSDE is additionally recommending that days previously scheduled for school closure during spring break be used as days off during this identified timeframe.
  • Administrators, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians should begin to immediately prepare for and implement measures for the continuity of educational services during a prolonged period of school closure.
  • Plans regarding childcare services are being developed by MSDE at this time to ensure that the children of emergency services personnel have access to childcare throughout a prolonged period of school closure.
CLOSURE OF CRUISE TERMINAL AT PORT OF BALTIMORE: No passenger or crew member will be allowed to disembark at any terminal at the Port of Baltimore from any passenger vessel that has made a call at port outside of the United States since January 31, 2020. Read the executive order.
  • The only exceptions to this order are the Carnival Pride and the RCL Grandeur of the Seas, which are due to return to port in the coming days, provided that no person on board such vessel has a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 or is under investigation for COVID-19.

  • Except as necessary to perform a duty required by law, no person shall board any covered passenger vessel at any terminal or port facility in the ports and harbors of the state.
  • Each owner of a terminal or port facility in the state that receives cargo vessels shall develop and implement procedures for screening and controlling the movement of crew members who desire to disembark from cargo vessels that have, since January 31, 2020, made a call at any port outside the United States.
EXTENSION OF PERMITTING DEADLINES: Because renewing expiring permits or licenses often requires the public to enter public buildings and interact with state employees; all licenses, permits, registrations, and other authorizations issued by the state, its agencies or any political subdivision that would expire during the current state of emergency will be extended until the 30th day after the state of emergency is lifted. Read the executive order.
GUIDANCE TO HOSPITALS FOR VISITATION POLICIES: The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) is advising hospitals to adopt new procedures to limit visitation, including:
  • No one under the age of 18 is permitted to visit, including in all waiting areas and common spaces.
  • Only one adult visitor per patient in all areas of the hospital.
  • Visitors should be screened for flu-like symptoms.
  • Visitors who have traveled internationally may not visit for 14 days after arrival into the United States.
SUSPENSION OF VISITS TO CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES: The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is suspending all visits to its correctional facilities effective immediately. The department will provide free phone calls and video visitation for inmates.
  • There have been no cases of coronavirus in our correctional facilities.

  • At this time, facility programming will continue on a case-by-case basis.

  • DPSCS will re-evaluate the situation often in an effort to restore normal visits as soon as possible.
MANDATORY TELEWORK FOR NON-ESSENTIAL STATE EMPLOYEES: Governor Hogan is directing the Department of Budget and Management to implement a period of mandatory telework, beginning Friday, March 13, across state agencies for all non-essential state employees. Read the executive order here. Read the Department of Budget and Management's guidance here.
DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS OF STATE GOVERNMENT: As he continues to manage the crisis, Governor Hogan is delegating the day-to-day operations of state government to Lt. Governor Rutherford.
STATE OF EMERGENCY: This week, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic. The State of Maryland is continuing to operate under a state of emergency, and all levels of government are taking a comprehensive, collaborative approach to keep Marylanders safe. The list of ongoing state actions is available at governor.maryland.gov/coronavirus.

Trump reportedly told aides he fears journalists will purposefully try to infect him with coronavirus on Air Force One

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

President Trump puts on a brave face when talking about the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, but things are reportedly pretty different behind closed doors.

Vanity Fair reports that Trump — a self-professed germaphobe — is "melting down over this." Perhaps not shockingly, he's focused on the media, in particular, one person close to the White House said. That reportedly includes him telling aides last week that he was concerned journalists would purposefully contract COVID-19 in an attempt to infect him on Air Force One.

Another source painted an image more in line with Trump's public reaction to the virus, as well, telling Vanity Fair he reportedly wants the Justice Department to "open an investigation of the media for market manipulation" as he tries to stave off, or at least provide a more optimistic outlook for, the plummeting stock market.

Pelosi: Trump reelection puts 'civilization as we know it' at risk

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said President Trump getting reelected could endanger Western civilization.

As the California Democrat was speaking at Northeastern's Women Who Empower Summit in Boston, Massachusetts, on Monday, she emphasized to attendees that she felt the results of the upcoming 2020 election would have negative, rippling effects across the globe.

"This election is a very important election. In my view, civilization as we know it is at stake. It's about everything. It's about America," Pelosi said.

Harvey Weinstein lawyers argue his 'fall from grace' is sufficient punishment in request for light sentence

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein argued his current health issues and "fall from grace" are sufficient punishments for raping and sexually assaulting women.

After being found guilty of first-degree sexual assault and third-degree rape in February, Weinstein's lawyers filed a letter on Tuesday ahead of the former producer's Wednesday sentencing, arguing that he be shown mercy with a five-year sentence.

"He has lost his means to earn a living. Simply put, his fall from grace has been historic, perhaps unmatched in the age of social media," they argued, adding that he "cannot walk outside without being heckled."
