Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:00 PM PST Grand Jury Indicts Grafton Thomas for Attacking Victims Because of Their Jewish Religion Eric Dreiband, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and William F. Sweeney Jr., the Assistant Director-in-Charge of the New York Office of the FBI announced today that Grafton Thomas has been indicted by a federal grand jury with five counts of willfully causing bodily injury to five victims because of the victims' religion and five counts of obstructing the free exercise of religion in an attempt to kill, federal hate crimes, related to his alleged machete attack during Hanukkah observances at a rabbi's home in Monsey, New York, on the night of Dec. 28, 2019. "Since before our founding as a nation and ever since, this country has provided refuge for people from other parts of the world who suffered violence and other forms of persecution because of their right to believe and worship as they see fit," said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband for the Civil Rights Division. "The United States remains today a beacon of freedom for persecuted religious people all over the world, and violent attacks against anyone because of religion is both illegal and against everything our nation stands for. The United States Department of Justice will continue to prosecute anyone who engages in such conduct to the fullest extent of the law." "On December 28, 2019, Grafton Thomas allegedly came armed with an 18-inch machete and entered a rabbi's home, where dozens had gathered for the holiday," said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman for the Southern District of New York. "We now allege that he did this with the intention of targeting his victims because of their religion. As alleged, with his face concealed beneath a scarf, he slashed and stabbed the assembled congregants, fled, and left at least five victims in his wake. Thomas faces life in prison for his alleged violent acts of prejudice and intolerance." "When an individual's actions cross the threshold of a federal crime, as we allege Mr. Grafton did here, we will act swiftly," said FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr. "The message from today's charges should be crystal clear – the FBI won't tolerate violence against anyone. Working with our partners, we will hold anyone who commits a crime like this accountable for their actions. The federal penalties for this type of attack are severe and justified. In this instance, the local community was engaged, and their actions were essential to saving lives and led directly to Mr. Grafton's capture. It's the rest of our community's joint responsibility to step up and engage as well – don't give hate a platform to propagate and don't dismiss this type of behavior as someone else's problem, address it and immediately report suspicious activity to authorities." According to the allegations in the Indictment and the Complaint: On Dec. 28, 2019, Thomas entered a Rabbi's home in Monsey, New York, which is adjacent to the Rabbi's synagogue, during observances related to the end of Shabbat and the seventh night of Hanukkah. Thomas declared to dozens of assembled congregants, "no one is leaving," and attacked the group with an 18-inch machete. At least five victims were hospitalized with serious injuries, including slash wounds, deep lacerations, a severed finger, and a skull fracture. Following the attack, Thomas traveled in a car to New York City, and he was stopped in Harlem by members of the New York City Police Department. The responding officers observed what appeared to be blood on Thomas's hands and clothing, and smelled bleach coming from his vehicle. A search of Thomas's vehicle led to the seizure of, among other things, a machete that appeared to have traces of dried blood on it. Law enforcement subsequently searched Thomas's residence and cellphone pursuant to warrants. The residence contained handwritten journals with several pages of anti-Semitic references, including references to "Adolf Hitler" and "Nazi Culture." Thomas's cellphone contained Internet searches dating back to at least November 2019 for terms such as "Zionist Temples" in Staten Island and New Jersey, "why did Hitler hate the Jews," and "prominent companies founded by Jews in America," as well as a webpage visit on the day of the attack to an article titled, "New York Increases Police Presence in Jewish Neighborhoods After Anti-Semitic Attacks. Here's What to Know." Thomas, 37, is charged with five counts of willfully causing bodily injury to, and attempting to kill, five victims because of their religion in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 249, and five counts of obstructing the free exercise of religion in an attempt to kill, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 247. Each of the 10 counts carries a maximum prison term of life. The maximum potential sentence in this case is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by a judge. Assistant Attorney General Dreiband and Mr. Berman praised the outstanding efforts of the FBI, the Rockland County District Attorney's Office, the Ramapo Police Department, the Rockland County Sherriff's Office, the New York State Police, the Clarkstown Police Department, and the New York City Police Department. This case is being handled by the Office's Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit, its White Plains Division, and the Civil Rights Unit of the Office's Civil Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael K. Krouse, Lindsey Keenan, and Lara K. Eshkenazi are in charge of the prosecution. The charges in the Indictment are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. |
Appeals court rules Trump can use nearly $4 billion in military funds for border wall Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:30 PM PST A federal appeals court late Wednesday ruled the Trump Administration can use nearly $4 billion in military funds for construction of the president's long-promised border wall. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit reversed an earlier decision by El Paso-based U.S. District Judge David Briones that blocked the spending. The latest decision allows the funds to be spent while the case plays out in its appeal. The $3.6 billion had been earmarked by the Trump administration for construction of 11 barriers on the southern border, CNN reported Wednesday. The original lawsuit was filed by El Paso County and the Border Network for Human Rights, an El Paso-based advocacy group. The Trump administration asked the appeals court to consider the matter on Dec. 16. More |
Ilhan Omar denounces Trump for treating illegal immigrants like 'criminals' Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST Rep. Ilhan Omar claimed Trump is treating illegal immigrants like "criminals," following news that the United States has started DNA testing migrants apprehended at the southern border. "The Trump administration's immigration 'policy': treating immigrants like criminals. @BernieSanders and my's approach: pathways to citizenship," the Minnesota Democrat tweeted Wednesday. Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib joined Omar in her outrage, suggesting all members of Congress should also endure the "dehumanizing" task of DNA testing. More |
Gov. Northam wants Lee statue removed from US Capitol, among other changes Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:30 PM PST On Thursday, Gov. Ralph Northam (D- VA) detailed a proposal that would give local communities power to control the fate of their Confederate War memorials. Currently, there is a statewide prohibition against removing them. Another bill would authorize the Commission for Historical Statues in the US Capitol to remove the Robert E. Lee statue in the National Statuary Hall Collection. The Governor did not have any immediate recommendations for which statue should replace it. Instead, he suggested that it should be determined by a commission. More |
Trump OKs Emergency Declaration for Aid to Puerto Rico Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:00 PM PST President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Puerto Rico on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the matter, after a deadly earthquake struck the commonwealth that was already struggling to recover from other natural disasters. The aid allows the U.S. government to provide immediate assistance, including restoring lost power, the person said on Tuesday night. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, both Florida Republicans, along with Jenniffer Gonzalez, Puerto Rico's non-voting representative in Congress, had urged Trump in a letter earlier Tuesday to approve the commonwealth's request for disaster aid. Posted: 09 Jan 2020 05:00 PM PST United Kingdom – A "devastated" Muslim man is demanding an apology and compensation after he bit into a pork sausage McMuffin that McDonald's accidentally served him. Fida Hussein, 49, says he ordered an egg and cheese McMuffin without any meat, but a McDonald's employee accidentally added pork sausage to the breakfast sandwich. Hussein said he immediately knew something was wrong when he took a bite of the pork and said it left him "devastated." "I trusted them, he explains. "I was watching Judge Judy and bit into the McMuffin and knew instantly when I tasted it that it was meat." "The taste was horrible, I knew straightaway and spat it out. It's just completely wrong. It's a sensitive subject, it could happen to anyone, vegan or if a person is on a particular diet." McDonald's has offered Hussein food vouchers, but he's not happy with their offer and said it's not enough. Hussein called the mistake McDonald's made "diabolical" and said the employees should never make mistakes. More |
National Park Replaces Signs Predicting Disappearance of Glaciers By 2020 Posted: 09 Jan 2020 04:30 PM PST The Glacier National Park is set to replace signs predicting glaciers would disappear by 2020 due to climate change. The glaciers remain. The signs were posted in the Montana park a decade ago because, at the time, climate change forecasts predicted the glaciers would be completely melted by 2020. The U.S. Geological Survey told the park in 2017 that the glaciers were not melting as fast as predicted due to changes in the forecast model, but park spokeswoman Gina Kurzmen said the park was unable to change the signs until now due to budget constraints. Kurzmen told CNN the park changed one sign last year but is still waiting on budget authorization to update two other signs. The new signs will still warn visitors that the glaciers are disappearing but won't offer an expected deadline this time. More |

GOP Governors Do Damage Control After Approving More Refugees Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:30 PM PST A number of Republican governors are doing damage control after they approved more refugee resettlement in their states, including Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. For Fiscal Year 2020, President Donald Trump will continue cutting refugee admissions by reducing former President Barack Obama's refugee inflow by at least 80 percent. This reduction would mean a maximum of 18,000 refugees can be resettled in the U.S. between October 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020. This is merely a numerical limit and not a goal federal officials are supposed to reach. Coupled with the refugee reduction, Trump signed an executive order that gives localities, counties, and states veto power over whether they want to resettle refugees in their communities. More |
Harris Statement on Iran and War Powers Resolution Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:10 PM PST WASHINGTON, DC: Today Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) voted "no" on H. Con. Res. 83 - Directing the President pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution to terminate the use of United States Armed Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran. Congressman Harris made the following statement: "Today I voted against the Democrats' purely political resolution seeking to tie the President's hands as he responds to the terrorist threat posed by Iran, its proxies, and radical Islamic terrorists. I fully support the President's targeted and proportional actions that responded to the attacks orchestrated by General Soleimani. Soleimani was intimately involved in the planning of the raid on the American Embassy in Baghdad last week, and intelligence indicated he was actively planning further attacks on Americans. As the longtime leader of the Quds Forces within the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the first state military institution to earn the "terrorist organization" designation by a presidential administration), he was directly involved in the training of terrorists and the building and deploying of improvised explosive devices, which resulted in the death or brutal maiming of thousands of American troops in the Middle East. Additionally, his organization supported and coordinated multiple Shiite terrorist militias which pose significant and ongoing threats to the U.S. and our allies. While the Iran apologists in Congress continue to attempt to politicize our national security, I support the President, and am confident that he will wisely evaluate all options in response to Iranian threats, including military action if Americans are at risk. We should not tie his hands in the fight to save Americans from radical Islamic terrorists." |
Attorney General Frosh Joins Multistate Brief Defending Women’s Reproductive Rights Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:00 PM PST BALTIMORE, MD (January 8, 2020) – Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh joined a multistate coalition in filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in support of the plaintiffs in Little Rock Family Planning Services v. Leslie Rutledge, a lawsuit that seeks to protect a woman's right to safe and legal abortion care. The multistate coalition supports the last surgical abortion clinic in Arkansas in its challenge to four state laws that would restrict women's access to safe and legal abortion by banning abortion after 18 weeks and otherwise restricting women's access to reproductive care. "The Arkansas laws put women's health and safety at risk," said Attorney General Frosh. "Chipping away at abortion services by placing burdensome restrictions on providers will not stop abortions from taking place; it will just make them more dangerous." In the brief, the coalition argues that the Arkansas laws violate women's constitutional right to choose under Roe v. Wade. The coalition further argues that limiting or eliminating women's access to safe and legal abortion leads to worse health and socioeconomic outcomes for women. These outcomes include forcing women to endure negative pregnancy side effects, the limitation of physical activity, restriction from full-time employment, and increased reliance on publicly funded safety-net programs. The brief describes the different ways that states promote women's health without impeding women's rights upheld by the constitution. In 2019, the Arkansas state legislature passed several laws intended to restrict access to abortion services. The laws would criminalize abortions performed after 18 weeks and impose other undue burdens on women's constitutional right to safe and legal abortion. Plaintiffs argue that Arkansas' laws would make abortion care either unavailable or less safe for women. On July 28, 2019, the U.S. District Court granted the plaintiff's motion for preliminary injunction, which temporarily blocked the Arkansas laws restricting abortion care. Arkansas appealed the decision to the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Eighth District shortly thereafter. Joining Maryland in filing today's brief are the attorneys general of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. |
Officials Explain Why Sunfest Pushed Back To October Posted: 09 Jan 2020 02:30 PM PST OCEAN CITY — One of the most significant changes from the closed session meetings addressing an unsanctioned motorized event is moving the signature Sunfest event to the first weekend in October this fall. Following a spirited Mayor and Council meeting after another troublesome unsanctioned motorized special event last September, resort officials promised everything was on the table in terms of possible solutions to the reckless activity and embarked on a series of closed session meetings throughout much of the fall and early winter to explore remedies. In the months since the unsanctioned H2O International (H2Oi) event wreaked havoc in Ocean City again, law enforcement officials and the Mayor and Council have been working in earnest, albeit behind closed doors, to explore and any all alternatives to curtail some of the behavior associated with the event. For the record, the official H2Oi event, featuring tricked-out Volkswagens and Audis, for example, has been held for the last few years in Atlantic City. However, in the years since the official event moved from its venue in northern Worcester County to Atlantic City, hundreds of enthusiasts continue to show up in Ocean City during the last weekend in September and the outcome has not changed, but rather has gotten worse. Posted: 09 Jan 2020 01:30 PM PST I predict that 20% of colleges and universities will shut down or merge in the next 10 years, and probably more. It was a good run. Most people fail to understand that higher education is in itself countercyclical. When the economy is bad, and people lose jobs, many of them will go back to school. You have probably heard about the for-profit education boom and bust. That is old news. You might not have heard that total enrollment has been declining for the last eight years as the economy has improved. What comes next will pulverize nearly every institution of higher learning in the country, private and public. The reason: demographics. Basically, an echo of the baby bust of the early seventies. Teachers Go to Court to Fight Union Over Choice of Charities Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:30 PM PST Teachers who object to paying union fees on religious grounds are too political, some union leaders in Pennsylvania argue in a new twist on long-standing complaints about organized labor's involvement in elective politics. But at least two of those teachers, who just had their day in court to put state labor laws under scrutiny, see more than a little irony at work in the union complaints. Lawyers for Jane Ladley, who taught in public schools for 25 years before retiring in 2014 from Avon Grove School District in Chester County, argued her case Dec. 11 before the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Joining Ladley in suing the Pennsylvania State Education Association, a teachers union, was Chris Meier, a history and economics teacher at Penn Manor High School in Lancaster County for the past 10 years. Neither teacher is a member of PSEA, but the union secured contractual agreements with their respective school districts that require non-members such as Ladley and Meier to pay what the union calls "fair share fees." Former CIA officer: Iranian sleeper cells in US a 'real threat' Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:00 AM PST Potential terrorist sleeper cell operations in the United States are a credible threat in the wake of Tuesday's Iranian missile strikes, former CIA officer Bryan Dean Wright said. Appearing on "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday, Wright said that there are "unquestionably" sleeper cells operated and directed by the Iranian regime in the U.S. "The CIA and the FBI have long had a pulse on this threat...So we know that the risk is there," he said. "The other deep concern is that we have to be right 100 percent of the time to mitigate these individuals [and] find this threat. And, unfortunately, we're not going to be able to do that every time." "So, what's important now is [if] the Iranians want to strike back, they know we will take a disproportionate attack against them," he told the "Friends" hosts. "That is powerful. That is important. And, the American people should sleep much, much, easier knowing that we have somebody in the White House who is willing to take that kind of a step," said Wright. New York May Give Automatic Voter Registration to Illegal Aliens with Driver’s Licenses Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:30 AM PST Democrats in the state of New York may soon give illegal aliens the ability to automatically register to vote when they apply for a driver's licenses at any state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. Reports have circulated that Democrats in the New York State Senate are looking this year to quickly pass a new law that automatically registers New York residents to vote in elections so long as they obtain a state-issued driver's license. Those licenses, available at DMVs, are now provided to all eligible New York residents — including illegal aliens. Last year, Democrats sought to give automatic voter registration to all illegal aliens who obtained driver's licenses with the state's new law that allows the illegal population to legally drive. Currently in New York, American citizens only need a driver's license to register to vote, and although applicants are required to swear that they are eligible to vote, state election officials have previously admitted that "it's basically an honor system." JUST IN: Iran mistakenly shot down Ukraine jet - US media Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:25 AM PST Iran mistakenly shot down the Ukrainian plane that crashed on Wednesday near Tehran with 176 people on board, US media report. US officials say they believe the Ukrainian International Airlines Boeing 737-800 was hit by a missile, CBS says. Ukraine earlier said it was examining whether a missile strike brought down the aircraft - but Iran ruled this out. The crash came just hours after Iran carried out missile strikes on two airbases housing US forces in Iraq. CBS News quoted US intelligence sources as saying a satellite detected infrared "blips" of two missile launches, followed by another blip of an explosion. More |
Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:00 AM PST "We Have a Generational Responsibility to Protect the Bay, and We Simply Cannot Afford to Fall Short of These Shared Obligations" "We have a generational responsibility to protect the Bay, and we simply cannot afford to fall short of these shared obligations," writes Governor Hogan. "Therefore, I ask that you commence litigation against the EPA and Pennsylvania, and in close coordination with the Maryland Department of the Environment." Read the governor's letter to the Attorney General here. In August, after watershed states submitted their final Chesapeake Bay clean-up plans to the federal administration, the governor expressed "alarming concerns" about Pennsylvania's lack of progress on clean water goals and called on the EPA to use its robust oversight powers to hold states accountable. "Pennsylvania, which is under 'enhanced' or 'backstop' federal oversight due to failed pollution reduction efforts, has proposed a draft Phase III Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) under which it would fall drastically short of its agreed-upon 2025 pollution reduction targets," writes Governor Hogan. "The EPA currently appears to have no intention of taking the necessary action to ensure Pennsylvania's compliance with its commitments." Governor Hogan is serving his second term as chairman of the Chesapeake Executive Council, which consists of the governors of the six watershed states, the mayor of the District of Columbia, the chair of the Chesapeake Bay Commission, and the EPA administrator. As governor, he has committed an historic $5 billion toward wide-ranging Bay restoration initiatives, and was recently successful in securing an increase in federal funding for Bay cleanup. |
'Disgrace': GOP congressman blasts Ilhan Omar for claiming PTSD over Iran Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:45 AM PST GOP Rep. Jim Banks attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar after she said she's "stricken with PTSD" regarding the recent tension between the United States and Iran. Omar, who was a refugee from Somalia, has been critical of President Trump's decision to target top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani last Thursday. Iran retaliated by attacking at least two U.S. air bases with more than a dozen ballistic missiles on Tuesday night, but there were no casualties. Trump announced that he would seek additional sanctions but did not plan to retaliate for the ballistic missiles earlier on Wednesday. The Minnesota Democrat condemned the president's announcement of additional sanctions, labeling them "economic warfare." More |
Minnesota County Votes to Reject Refugee Resettlement Under Trump Executive Order Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:30 AM PST Beltrami County in Minnesota has voted to reject refugee resettlement in their community following an executive order from President Donald Trump that allows state and local governments to determine whether or not they consent to accepting them. Minnesota's Democrat Governor Tim Walz has already vowed to take refugees on a state level, but that will not override the county's decision. The 3-2 vote on Tuesday was reportedly rowdy, as most residents strongly opposed taking refugees. The Star Tribune reports that the meeting was "filled with jeers, shouts and accusations among the more than 150 people." Baltrami County is now one of few counties nationwide to formally reject refugee resettlement. More |
#RedforEd Teachers Rally Around Bernie Sanders’ Socialist Banner Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:15 AM PST The #RedforEd teachers' movement appears to be moving towards Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) as their choice for the 2020 Democrat nominee. The Sanders campaign highlighted that connection in its recent statement announcing its $34 million 4th quarter fundraising haul, noting, "'Teacher' was the most common occupation of Sanders' fourth quarter donors, the five most common employers were Amazon, Starbucks, Walmart, the United States Postal Service and Target." As Breitbart News reported in February: A well-funded and subversive leftist movement of teachers in the United States threatens to tilt the political balance nationwide in the direction of Democrats across the country as Republicans barely hang on in key states that they need to hold for President Donald Trump to win re-election and for Republicans to have a shot at retaking the House and holding onto their Senate majority. This teachers union effort, called #RedforEd, has its roots in the very same socialism that President Trump vowed in his 2019 State of the Union address to stop, and it began in its current form in early 2018 in a far-flung corner of the country before spreading nationally. Its stated goals–higher teacher pay and better education conditions–are overshadowed by a more malevolent political agenda: a leftist Democrat uprising designed to flip purple or red states to blue, using the might of a significant part of the education system as its lever. Trump Opts for More Sanctions, Not Military Action, After Iran’s Attack Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:30 AM PST Less than 24 hours after Iran fired 15 missiles at U.S. military facilities in Iraq, President Donald Trump signaled a strong desire to deescalate by announcing new sanctions instead of a military response. Trump also urged allies to put more pressure on Iran's Islamist dictatorship. "As long as I am president of the United States, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon," Trump said to begin his formal remarks Wednesday in the Grand Foyer of the White House. "No Americans were harmed in last night's attack by the Iranian regime. We suffered no casualties," Trump said. "All of our soldiers are safe, and only minimal damage was sustained at our military bases." "Our great American forces are prepared for anything. Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world." Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:00 AM PST A judge has ordered Google to turn over a year's worth of Jussie Smollett's emails, private messages, photographs and location data to a special prosecutor who is looking into why prosecutors abruptly dismissed criminal charges against the actor. On Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reported that it had obtained two search warrants submitted by special prosecutor Dan Webb and signed off by Cook County Judge Michael Toomin last month. Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's office filed and quickly dropped 16 counts of disorderly conduct against Smollett for allegedly staging a January 2019 attack in downtown Chicago and lying about it to police. Toomin appointed Webb months later and the warrants offer the first public hints about what he has been investigating. More |
Maryland Legislator Wants To Steer Low-Income Housing To Affluent Suburban Neighborhoods Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:45 AM PST A Maryland legislator wants to identify affluent suburban neighborhoods and target them for low-income, high-density housing. House Del. Vaughn Stewart, a Democrat, wrote Jan. 3 that he will introduce "Homes for All" legislation that would "legalize the construction of modest homes in neighborhoods close to affluent schools, reliable transit, and good jobs." "For too long, local governments have weaponized zoning codes to block people of color and the working class from high-opportunity neighborhoods, pushing them to the crumbling margins of cities and towns. We must act boldly to reverse decades of these exclusionary policies," he wrote. More |
Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:30 AM PST As Maryland's lawmakers opened their annual legislative session on Wednesday, House of Delegates Speaker Adrienne A. Jones said she expects delegates will ask "tough questions" about Gov. Larry Hogan's business dealings. Jones, a Democrat, said a subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee would have jurisdiction to look into Hogan's business affairs while in office. Since becoming governor in 2015, Hogan stepped aside from his Annapolis-based Hogan Cos. real estate business and turned his assets over to be managed by a trust. "We do have a committee that would be looking at that and may have a briefing as relates to that," Jones said at an "Annapolis Summit" event hosted by The Daily Record. In a later statement, Jones' chief of staff, Alexandra Hughes, indicated that any questions about whether Hogan Cos. sites have benefited from state transportation projects could come as the committee reviews the administration's transportation proposals as part of the regular budget process. STUDY: Worst Run States Are Run By Democrats Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:15 AM PST The national debt is a ticking time bomb now topping $23.1 trillion – and that isn't even the total debt that American taxpayers owe. Forty of the nation's fifty states don't have enough money to meet their obligations, with a total of $1.5 trillion in growing unfunded liabilities. While most states are in hot water, the problem is worst in states with a Democrat governor alongside a Democrat controlled legislature. A new study from Truth in Accounting analyzed the fiscal health of the fifty states and and the trend was clear. The more Republican control, the better (and less-worse) fiscal health those states are in. The worst run states and their unfunded liabilities per citizen, according to their "2019 Financial State of the States," are: Advertisement Vermont, -$19,000 New York, -$20,500 California, -$21,800 Kentucky, -$25,700 Delaware, -$27,100 Hawaii, -$31,200 Massachusetts, -$31,200 Connecticut, -$51,800 Illinois, -$52,600 New Jersey, -$65,100 More |
Trump’s Iran Policy Isn’t the Problem; Obama’s Was Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:00 AM PST President Donald Trump launched a global round of teeth gnashing when he ordered the killing of the greatest terrorist leader in the modern Middle East, Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani. Suleimani was unquestionably responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans in Iraq and thousands of others throughout the Middle East—mostly Muslim. His global terror network ran from South America to Europe to Africa to Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Suleimani was an unparalleled organizer and a pitiless murderer. His death was richly earned. But for many in the media and on the domestic and international left, Trump's action was precipitously "provocative." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Suleimani 's killing—which came directly after a Suleimani-approved terror assault on America's embassy in Baghdad and amidst reported further plans for escalated terror against American targets–"disproportionate." Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., suggested that Trump, not the Iranians, had "escalated" the situation. Former Vice President Joe Biden said that Trump had "just tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox." This reaction has been magnified by the media, many of whom have been speculating about the possibility of all-out war between the United States and Iran. More |

Posted: 09 Jan 2020 05:00 AM PST Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here's what you need to know as you start your day ... House to vote on War Powers resolution limiting Trump's actions as US, Iran back away from military conflict Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced plans for the House to vote Thursday on a War Powers Resolution that aims to limit President Trump's military action toward Iran, saying Democrats have "serious, urgent concerns about the administration's decision to engage in hostilities against Iran and about its lack of strategy moving forward." The Democrat-authored resolution would reassert congressional authority and rebuke Trump's decision last week to take out Iran's top general, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, in an airstrike without their consent. Republican leadership aides argued to Fox News that the proposed War Powers Resolution is "toothless," saying it has "NO chance of becoming law." https://www.foxnews.com/us/house-vote-war-powers-trump-iran-pelosi-impeach |
