The Truth About Lilac Bushes

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 08:00 PM PST

"I had an article idea for you," Chris Orange said. "Think about the old farmhouses you've seen, and how often you see lilac bushes."

Chris Orange is the park manager of the Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park in Lake County, Indiana. As sharp as a new razor and a frequent inspiration for articles on this site, Chris is a walking file cabinet of Indiana lore. Also, he's the brother of the co-founder.

Yes, I had seen lilac bushes frequently on the site of old farmhouses. I thought of several I had seen in a line, usually towards the back of the property. "I'll bite. I assumed it was decorative," I said.

Chris shook his head. "Trust me, they didn't spend much time a hundred years ago bothering with landscaping. That's a pretty recent thing. Lilac bushes—"

Blades- The Delaware State Police have arrested 44-year-old Rodney A. Hearn of Seaford, DE after he impersonated a vet to solicit donations.
On January 7, 2020 at approximately 5:25 p.m., Troopers responded to the 100 block of Meadows Drive, Blades, for a report of a suspicious person going door to door soliciting money.  It was learned that the suspicious person (Hearn)made contact with five residents, four who were over the age of 62, and advised that he was a Marine Veteran with multiple sclerosis, and affiliated with the local VFW.  Hearn indicated to the victims that he was soliciting donations for an alleged Valentine's Day 5k for M.S.  Hearn received several monetary donations and provided the victims with a handwritten receipt.

Hearn was transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with the following:

The Navy SEAL who claims to have shot and killed Osama bin Laden asked what Tehran and Hiroshima have in common hours after Iran fired dozens of ballistic missiles at two military bases housing American forces in Iraq.
"Wanna know what Tehran and Hiroshima have in common?" tweeted Robert J. O'Neill late Tuesday night. "Nothing yet."
On Aug. 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, instantly killing an estimated 100,000 people.

Justin Trudeau vows to 'get answers' after Ukrainian passenger jet crash in Iran that killed 176, including 63 Canadians, as Tehran refuses to hand over jet's black box

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:30 PM PST

Justin Trudeau has today vowed to get answers after 176 people including 63 Canadians died in a plane crash near Tehran, with Iran blaming an engine fire but refusing to hand over the recovered black boxes.

The Boeing 737 jet came down just minutes after take-off from Imam Khomeini International Airport early this morning, sparking fresh alarm in the Middle East hours after Iran launched missile strikes on US bases.

Three Britons and 63 Canadians were among the 168 passengers and nine crew on board the Ukrainian International Airlines flight to Kyiv. There were no survivors.

Today the Canadian PM offered his 'deepest condolences' to the victims' families and vowed to 'ensure that this crash is thoroughly investigated, and that Canadians' questions are answered'. The US promised 'complete co-operation' with the probe.

Prosecutors demand disgraced national security advisor Mike Flynn is jailed for SIX MONTHS for being unrepentant about lying to the FBI

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:00 PM PST

President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn deserves up to six months behind bars, the Justice Department said Tuesday, reversing its earlier position that he was entitled to avoid prison time because of his extensive cooperation with prosecutors.

The government's sentencing memo is a sharp rebuke to Flynn's new legal team, which for months has attacked special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation and accused prosecutors of withholding information that they said was favorable to their client.

A judge rejected those arguments last month.

2 more Chinese students held after shooting photos at base

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 05:30 PM PST

Key West visitors always flock to the town's favorite tourist spots — Mallory Square, Duval Street, Ernest Hemingway's home, and the Southernmost Point Buoy — to snap photos and record memories.

But apparently, not students visiting from China. For some reason, they seem to like taking pictures of military facilities in Key West.

The latest — a pair of Chinese nationals attending the University of Michigan — were arrested over the weekend and appeared in federal court in Key West on Monday on a charge of entering a U.S. Naval property for the purpose of photographing defense installations.

At their first appearances in Key West federal court on Monday, the two defendants asked Magistrate Judge Lurana Snow to appoint lawyers to represent them.

But since both said they had about $9,000 each in a U.S. bank account, the judge required them to contribute $7,500 each to the cost of their defense.

In a similar case, another Chinese student, Lyuyou Liao, was arrested the day after Christmas on a charge of entering the Truman Annex at the Naval Air Station for the purpose of photographing defense installations.

At a detention hearing before Judge Snow on Monday, prosecutors described Liao as a 27-year-old college student in St. Louis, Missouri, who had a full scholarship from the Chinese government.

Plastic cards may soon give way to biometric systems, microchip implants

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 05:00 PM PST

For many employees, the workday starts by swiping a plastic ID card to enter the office. But employers can't always be sure who's holding the card.

That humble ID badge is starting to be replaced by biometric identification systems, microchip implants and tools that monitor workers' gaits or typing habits—technologies that might not only make workplaces more secure and easier to navigate but also generate personalized health and productivity data.

It's easy to see why some employers are already using technologies like face and iris scans, which are more difficult to spoof than standard plastic ID cards. Cameras scan and record the faces of employees and temporary contractors, allowing the workers to bypass turnstiles. Companies can easily reconfigure existing office cameras with facial-recognition technology. When a person leaves a job, the employer can tag the person's face so cameras block re-entrance.

March For Our Lives Raised Nearly All Funding From Secret Six-Figure Donations

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:30 PM PST

The gun-control group responsible for a 2018 march on Washington, D.C., raised the vast majority of its funds from undisclosed donations over six figures, a recently released tax document shows.

The March For Our Lives Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) "social welfare" organization launched in the aftermath of the deadly 2018 shootings at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, is bankrolled almost entirely by large donations in excess of $100,000. The group reported $17,879,150 in contributions and grants over the course of 2018, its first year of operations. Ninety-five percent of those contributions came from 36 donations between $100,000 and $3,504,717—a grand total of $16,922,331.

"It had caught my eye specifically because of the shiny packaging and how like kiddish it sort of looked, so I thought it might be fun to try on," Lauren told WDAF-TV.

CHARLES COUNTY MAN CHARGED AFTER THROWING MOLOTOV COCKTAIL AT VEHICLE

CHARLES COUNTY, MD (January 8, 2020) Deputy State Fire Marshals have arrested an Indian Head man after determining he was responsible for slicing the tires of a vehicle and then attempted to set fire to the car after he threw a Molotov cocktail at the vehicle.
On January 7, 2020, at approximately 9:30 a.m. Charles County Sheriffs Office responded to the unit block of Glymont Road after the victim discovered their vehicles' tires were slashed overnight and subsequently found the remains of a destructive device, commonly referred to as a 'Molotov cocktail.' Deputy State Fire Marshals were requested to conduct an investigation and identified Montell Ray Elliott, age 24 of Indian Head as the suspect. Investigators estimate damages to the vehicle as well as the attempted arson caused approximately $1,000.00 in damages.
Charles County Sheriffs Office assisted the Office of the State Fire Marshal yesterday evening in apprehending Elliott without incident. He was charged with Manufacturing/Possession of a Destructive Device, Arson 2nd Degree, Malicious Burning 2nd Degree and Malicious Destruction of Property less than $1,000.00

Beach Stands Auctions Bring Revenue Increase To OC

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:00 PM PST

OCEAN CITY — The beach equipment rental business remains lucrative, judging by the results of a recent auction of the parcels in the downtown area.

During Monday's Ocean City Mayor and Council meeting, City Clerk Diana Chavis announced the results of December's beach equipment rental parcels in the downtown area south of 27th Street. The town's beach equipment rental franchise parcels, or informally beach stands, are auctioned in a three-year cycle with geographic areas including the north end, the middle and the south end.

In December, most of the south-end parcels from 27th Street south to the Inlet went up for auction. A total of 34 parcels were included in the section and the contracts for six of them were renewed for another three-year term at an annual fee of 10% greater than the initial term. The remaining 28 parcels were auctioned, and with spirited bidding for most, the town's revenue for the south section will increase by nearly 67%.

Judge rules that Hunter Biden IS the father of DC stripper's 17-month-old baby - who has the initials NJR and will not take Biden's name - and orders the child's birth certificate to be updated after DNA test proved paternity

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:48 PM PST

Hunter Biden is the legal father of a 17-month-old, according to an Arkansas judge ruling on Tuesday.

Circuit Court Judge Holly Meyer said that DNA testing determined that Biden is the father of Lunden Roberts' child with 'near scientific certainty.'

A new birth certificate will be issued naming Biden as the father of NJR and the case will remain open while the rest of the issues are resolved between the two.

Judge Holly Meyer, who took over the case after Judge Don McSpadden recused himself on New Years Eve, asked Biden's lawyers on Friday to send over papers that redacted the name of the child, whose gender is being kept secret.

2020 Democrats’ Home Towns Resettled Only 0.22% of All Refugees in Last Decade

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:00 PM PST

The four leading 2020 Democrats have demanded more refugee resettlement in American communities, but their own home towns have taken little-to-no refugees over the last decade.

Former Vice President Joe Biden of Delaware, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg have each vowed to massively increase the flow of refugees from abroad into the United States if elected.

Their homes in each of their states, where they have residences, have largely passed the burden of refugee resettlement onto neighboring states and communities.

For example, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware — where Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, have a vacation home — has resettled zero refugees between 2009 and 2019. Delaware, in fact, has resettled only 82 refugees since 2009, a figure that makes it one of the least likely states in the nation to resettle refugees.

In Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden's primary residence sits, less than 50 refugees have been resettled in the last decade.

Teen Vogue Promotes Radical Sexual Agenda to Its Young Audience

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 01:30 PM PST

Teen Vogue churned out a variety of highly explicit sexual material for its teenage audience in 2019.

The publication has been described as a "glossy" magazine "aimed at teenage girls" that has recently stepped forward into the political spectrum to criticize President Donald Trump. But in 2019, Teen Vogue also offered teenagers a chance to discover "How To Have Queer Sex," "How To Use Sex Magic To Manifest Your Best Self," "How To Get An Abortion If You're A Teen," and more.

Several of these stories cite Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, as their source for health and sex tips. The stories are posted on Teen Vogue's website, many are shared on Twitter, and some are highlighted on the publication's Instagram page.

Critics of the publication say that Teen Vogue's content is entirely unfit for its teenaged audience. Donna Rice Hughes, president and CEO of Enough Is Enough, an organization dedicated to making the internet safer for children, warns that Teen Vogue is driven by "a clear agenda to sexualize and exploit the minds of its young teen and tween readers during what should be a protected period of innocence."

Anti-trafficking activist Jaco Booyens says the publication's content grooms young people and seeks to desensitize them to such explicit content.

Tennessee bill would require student athletes to compete based on gender at birth

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 01:00 PM PST

A Tennessee lawmaker has introduced a bill that would force transgender students to play on sports team based on their sex at birth.

Republican State Rep. Bruce Griffey introduced the bill last month, which proposes the requirement of elementary and secondary schools receiving public funding to ensure that student athletes participate in school-sanctioned sports based on students' biological sex indicated by an original birth certificate.

"This bill prohibits a school from accepting revised or amended birth certificates for the purposes of athletic participation," according to a bill summary on the Tennessee General Assembly website. "A school that fails to comply with these requirements will be immediately ineligible to continue receiving state and local public funds."

Virginia Beach passes resolution to make itself a Second Amendment sanctuary

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:00 PM PST

Virginia Beach — Virginia Beach plans to make the city a sanctuary for gun owners, in anticipation of gun control legislation it expects to see passed into state law, since the legislature is now controlled by Democrats, and the sitting governor, Ralph Northam, is also a Democrat.

The Virginia Beach City Council, by a 6 to 4 vote, adopted a resolution Monday declaring itself a "Second Amendment Constitutional City." It stated "its continued commitment to support all provisions of the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia, including the right of the people to keep and bear arms."

Under the resolution, the city government will not use its resources to prosecute anti-gun laws, even though any state laws limiting gun use would supersede the local government's authority.

2020’s Best & Worst States to Raise a Family

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 11:30 AM PST

Raising a healthy, stable family sometimes requires moving to a new state. And the reasons for moving are often similar: career transitions, better schools, financial challenges or a general desire to change settings.

But wants and needs don't always align in a particular state. For instance, a state might offer a low income-tax rate but have a subpar education system. However, families do not need to make these kinds of tradeoffs. They can avoid such problems by knowing which states offer the best combination of qualities that matter most to parents and their kids.

To help with the evaluation process, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 50 key indicators of family-friendliness. Our data set ranges from median family salary to housing affordability to unemployment rate. Read on for the complete ranking, relocation advice from our panel of experts and a full description of our methodology.

"If I'm A Criminal, It’s Open Season": Atlanta Police To Stop Chasing Criminals

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:30 AM PST

In a country where the balance of power swings wildly between law enforcement and criminals, Atlanta has launching a program that as of this moment will let crime run rampant without and police officers in pursuit. Literally.

Last week, Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields sent out an email to the entire police force notifying officers that the department will no longer chase suspects, in what is now called a "zero chase policy." According to WSB-TV, Shields cited "the risk to the safety of the officers and the public for each chase", and "knowing that the judicial system is largely unresponsive to the actions of the defendants."

Ostensibly, the change comes after public outcry following a deadly crash last month that killed two men during a police chase. The APD's response: halt all police chases indefinitely.

Atheists want famous 9/11 cross in Effingham, Illinois, erased in highway mural

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:00 AM PST

A colorful mural that shows the famous white 9/11 cross in Effingham, Illinois, has become the latest flashpoint over religious freedom, pitting atheists and a group opposed to mingling church and state against the legal group that saved the iconic American Legion peace cross in Bladensburg, Maryland.

Just before Christmas, the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation asked Effingham to erase the cross depicted in a mural that also shows an American flag on an overpass near Effingham High School, claiming that it sends the wrong message to students.

"A mural that depicts nothing except a Latin cross alongside the American flag sends a clear message: that patriotism and religiosity are interrelated," said the group in a letter to Effingham Mayor Mike Schutzbach.

Schumer indicates Pelosi may soon send impeachment articles to Senate

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:30 AM PST

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may finally be ready to send the Senate the articles of impeachment for President Trump that the House passed last month, now that it is clear Democrats will not win a pretrial agreement for witness testimony.

Schumer, a New York Democrat who is working very closely with Pelosi on the timing for delivering the two impeachment articles, said the new information would allow Pelosi to decide which Democratic lawmakers should serve as impeachment managers who would deliver the articles to the Senate and present the case to lawmakers there.

"The speaker has said all along that she wanted to see the arena in which she was playing so she could appoint impeachment managers," Schumer said Tuesday. "She has some idea of what's happened."

Hollywood needs to change its messaging on fatherhood

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:15 AM PST

During his heartfelt Golden Globes speech, Tom Hanks said his five children are braver, stronger, and wiser than him. Please do not think I am beating up on Tom Hanks. I am simply pointing out that Hanks downplaying his fatherly position is a mindset we see reflected in practically every family movie and sitcom today.

We have gone from TV shows like Father Knows Best to countless shows in which Father is portrayed as an idiot — the butt of jokes, spoken to with disrespect from his wife and children.

As a child, my black family loved watching The Andy Griffith Show. Like Andy's son Opie in the show, my four siblings and I had great fun with our dad. And yet, we knew our place, never daring to speak to him with disrespect.

I have turned off movies and TV shows because I could not stomach the disrespectful way children speak to their fathers, lecturing Dad and displaying arrogant disobedience.

Hollywood, Democrats, and fake news media believe that children are wiser than their parents, especially their heterosexual white fathers. Children are told to steal their parents' guns and turn them over to schoolteachers. Michelle Obama told students to monitor family discussions for racism. Leftist school administrators say children should be allowed to have abortions and even pretend to change their sex through bodily mutilation without parental consent.

Eleven Senate Republicans co-sponsor resolution to dismiss impeachment articles against Trump

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:00 AM PST

Nearly a dozen Senate Republicans have put forth a resolution that, if passed, would seek to dismiss articles of impeachment against President Trump immediately.

"The Constitution gives the Senate sole power to adjudicate articles of impeachment, not the House," said Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, who introduced the resolution, in a statement Monday. "If Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi is afraid to try her case, the articles should be dismissed for failure to prosecute and Congress should get back to doing the people's business."

The resolution would change Senate rules to allow the upper chamber to vote on articles of impeachment if the House fails to send the articles over within 25 days. Pelosi has so far refused to send the articles because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will not commit to having witnesses at the trial.

In the suit, filed back in March, Sandmann's attorney claimed that 'CNN brought down the full force of its corporate power, influence, and wealth on Nicholas by falsely attacking, vilifying, and bullying him despite the fact that he was a minor child.'

'Wax my balls' transgender activist targets another immigrant beauty salon with human rights complaint

Transgender activist Jessica Yaniv has filed another human rights complaint against a Canadian beauty salon after workers refused to wax Yaniv's male genitalia.

The latest complaint comes against She Point Beauty Studio, which offers Brazilian bikini waxes and leg waxes. The salon is run by East Indian women who are part of the Sikh religion. They rejected Yaniv's request for waxes based on religious and cultural reasons, according to the Justice Centre, which is defending the women.

"Women have a constitutional right not to be compelled to touch biological males in an intimate or highly personal manner if they are not comfortable doing so," Jay Cameron, an attorney with the Justice Centre, said in a Tuesday statement. "Like male genital waxing, our client does not offer male leg waxing services to the public, and we intend to vigorously defend against this targeted harassment on behalf of our client."

Democrats have not released the transcript of that deposition despite mounting pressure by Republicans.

"Everyone needs to see that testimony," Nunes said, adding that the reason it has not been released is "because it's very damaging, not only to the whistleblower but also to Atkinson himself."

Limbaugh on possible war with Iran or North Korea: America 'cannot lose'

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:45 AM PST

Rush Limbaugh boldly said Tuesday that the United States "cannot lose" if faced with a war against Iran or North Korea, adding that the Democrats continue to be blinded by their hatred toward President Trump.

"No Democrat out there speaking right now understands that Donald Trump cannot lose any of these arguments that he's having with Iran or with North Korea," Limbaugh said on his radio show. "We cannot lose if we decide to engage. We cannot lose."

Limbaugh explained that America's military capabilities far exceed any threat that Iran and North Korea could present.

"We have the military agents of destruction ready to launch on North Korea and Iran or any other enemy on a moment's notice. Not from here, from there," Limbaugh said. "We are everywhere and we have the ability to project power unlike any other nation in the world."

"Bottom line is the United States could destroy every strategically relevant military and economic target in Iran in 30 minutes," Limbaugh added. "But this is one of the reasons why the American left so despises America, because we do have this ability and nobody else does."

Jonathan Capehart thinks Latinos and blacks voting for Trump want to be white

Back during the 2016 campaign, I wondered what liberals would do when President Trump started making meaningful gestures toward minority voters. Of course, I should have known that they'd call him racist for it. What I didn't anticipate was liberals effectively calling the minority voters who support the president a bunch of Uncle Toms.

That's what liberal Washington Post writer Jonathan Capehart did in a column on Monday, warning Democrats that Trump "is making a serious play for African American and Latino votes."

Capehart wrote that "white supremacy" remains "potent" because whites in power are at times willing to bestow "whiteness upon those once excluded in order to maintain majority numbers." He then faulted the "willingness of the once-excluded to accept the invitation to join the fold." To add intellectual heft to that stunning statement, Capehart quoted George Mason University Professor Justin Gest, who said that "In exchange for their marginal promotion" in society, Latinos may "defer to the constructed racial hierarchy that once subordinated them."

Congressional Democrats Circulate Hysterical Twitter Rumor As News

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:00 AM PST

As the famous quote goes, "a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on."

That was on full display this week as various Democrat politicians pushed hysterical claims about Iranian Americans being detained – based off of a twitter rumor from an activist.

The myth circulated from the twitter account "hodakatebi," a self-described "political fashion writer" who once served as CAIR's communications coordinator in Chicago. The fashionista "informed" us, in all caps, that "US CUSTOMS & BORDER PROTECTION NATIONALLY HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO DETAIN & REPORT ALL IRANIANS ENTERING THE COUNTRY DEEMED POTENTIALLY SUSPICIOUS OR ADVERSARIAL REGARDLESS OF CITIZENSHIP STATUS."

As of writing, the tweet has been shared nearly 50,000 times. Border Patrol personally corrected the misinformation when the tweet had fewer than 20k retweets, and yet that didn't stop it from spreading like wildfire. Nor did the correction seem to matter, as CBP was flooded by comments from liberals telling them they don't believe them.

Iran 'threatens to hit Israel and Dubai if the US retaliates over missile attack'

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 05:00 AM PST

Iran has threatened to bomb Israel and Dubai if the United States retaliates for its ballistic missile strike at two Iraqi bases housing US troops.

Tehran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing American troops in a revenge attack for the US drone strike that killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani on Friday.

The Ayn al Asad airbase in western Iraq that was visited by Donald Trump in December 2018 and the Erbil base in Iraqi Kurdistan were both struck by the missiles on Tuesday at about 5.30pm.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned the US and its regional allies against retaliating over the missile attack.

Pentagon Confirms Iran Launching Dozens of Missiles at U.S. Targets in Iraq

Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:00 AM PST

Iran is taking credit for a rocket attack targeting the al-Assad airbase in Iraq, which houses U.S. troops. They announced that the missiles were part of "Shahid [martyr] Soleimani Operation," hinting at an extended military operation against the United States. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) – not Hezbollah or one of many Iranian proxies in Iraq – took credit.

Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement:

"At approximately 5:30 p.m. (EST) on January 7, Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles against U.S. military and coalition forces in Iraq. It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil. We are working on initial battle damage assessments. In recent days and in response to Iranian threats and actions, the Department of Defense has taken all appropriate measures to safeguard our personnel and partners. These bases have been on high alert due to indications that the Iranian regime planned to attack our forces and interests in the region. As we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend U.S. personnel, partners, and allies in the region. Due to the dynamic nature of the situation, we will continue to provide updates as they become available."
