Obama Is The Captain Of The Titanic

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 09:00 PM PST

Over the New Year's weekend, President Barack Obama's chief policy adviser and closest strategist, Valerie Jarrett, told a talk show host that her boss would have a happy legacy because there was an absence of scandal in his administration.

When first I heard this preposterous claim, I thought I had misheard it. Yet it is apparently true that President Obama and his team somehow can overlook recent history and behave as if events with which we are all familiar never happened.

Here is the back story.

When Obama became president in 2009 and enjoyed significant Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress, he and his colleagues devoted themselves entirely to an issue nowhere in the Constitution — health care. They did not address other issues dear to them and their base, such as guns, abortion, taxes, war, jobs and civil liberties. Rather, they sought to alter radically the relationship of the federal government to every person in America by imposing upon each of us the obligation to purchase a product — namely, health insurance — whether we wanted it or not.

The abominable statute they enacted, which has caused millions of folks to lose their primary care physician and millions more to see their premiums skyrocket and still millions more to see their full-time jobs become part-time, has acquired the nickname Obamacare.

Instead of reducing taxes or regulations or spending so more folks would have better-paying jobs, the president and his folks were determined to tell us all how to stay healthy. Obamacare passed on a party-line vote, with not a single vote to spare in the Senate.

At the time it was enacted, the president argued vociferously that the financial consequence of not obtaining health insurance — the penalty for disobeying the law — was not a tax. He made that argument because he had promised Democrats — many of whom lost their congressional seats for going along with his utopian experiment — that he would not raise taxes to accomplish his purposes.

When the statute was challenged in the federal courts and the various challenges were consolidated before the Supreme Court, the challengers did not dispute the claim that the penalty was not a tax. A court cannot consider arguments or evidence not put to it. For instance, in an automobile accident, if all eyewitnesses state that a traffic light in question was green at the time of the collision, the court may not find that it was red.

Yet notwithstanding agreement among the parties before the Supreme Court and notwithstanding the absence of any evidence that the penalty was a tax, the Supreme Court made new law by declaring this non-tax to be a tax and then ruling that Congress can tax anything it wants — so Congress can force you to purchase a product you don't want by taxing you if you fail to make the purchase.

Communist China Moves Against Trump, Asserts Control Over Strategic Ports

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 08:00 PM PST

The Communist Chinese government, through state-controlled corporations masquerading as private entities, is accelerating its plan to acquire control over deep water ports and major shipping lanes across the world.

The Sri Lankan government, heavily indebted to China, recently agreed to lease approximately 80% of a strategic port in the southern part of the country to a state-owned Chinese company for $1.1 billion.

The port of Hambantota lies along an important trade route connecting Asia and the Middle East, and is a key part of Chinese President Xi Jinping's "one belt, one road" plan to expand Chinese control over key shipping lanes.

Report finds improvements in Chesapeake Bay’s overall health

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 07:30 PM PST

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Water clarity in the Chesapeake Bay is the best it's been in decades, and native rockfish, oyster and blue crab populations are rebounding as the overall health of the nation's largest estuary improves, a report released Thursday found.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation's biennial State of the Bay report gave the estuary a C-minus grade, an improvement from a D-plus two years ago and the highest score issued since the inception of the report in 1998.

Still, the report notes that the bay — an economic driver that supports fishing, farming, shipping and tourism — remains "a system dangerously out of balance, a system in crisis," and says progress has been uneven across the region. The Chesapeake Bay watershed spans 64,000 square miles in parts of Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

"The bay is getting better," foundation President William Baker said in a conference call with reporters. "This is good news, but the recovery is fragile. There's a long way left to go."

Philly Thieves

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 07:00 PM PST

Check out this receipt and you realize why the country just elected Donald Trump. Liberal Democrat scumbag mayor Jim Kenney and his entirely Democrat city council thought it was a brilliant idea to ram a beverage tax down the throats of Philadelphians last year. They were doing it for the chilruns. It's always for the chilrun. The ignorant masses bought the load of bullshit because they don't understand maff. They understand it now. The tax went into effect on January 1 and the sticker shock is infuriating the ignorant masses.

This receipt for a 10 pack of flavored water shows a 51% beverage tax. It gets even better. PA has a sales tax of 6%. Philly already charges another 2% (for the chilruns) to make the sales tax 8%. These bastards now charge the 8% on the original price plus the beverage tax. Last week this purchase came to $6.47. Today it is $9.75.

Dreaded ‘stomach flu’ wreaks havoc on families — and it’s only going to get worse

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 06:30 PM PST

Once the virus hits, the attacks are often swift and brutal. The stomach and intestines become inflamed. Bouts of vomiting and diarrhea follow that leave victims weak and exhausted. And since the bug is extremely contagious, it can spread easily to others, especially in places like day-care centers, schools, cruise ships and nursing homes.

If all of this sounds familiar to those of you who were laid viciously low over the holidays, it's because the arrival of cold weather usually coincides with an increase in one of winter's most dreaded horrors: norovirus. Although norovirus is often referred to, incorrectly, as stomach flu, it has nothing to do with influenza, which is a respiratory virus. While you can get sick from norovirus at any time during the year, it's most common in the winter.

That's when people tend to congregate more, and the closer you are, the more you tend to share your germs. Colder temperatures also seem to make it easier for the germs "to stick around on surfaces a little bit longer," said Aron Hall, an epidemiologist who tracks norovirus at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rand Paul Goes Off On Republican Party Over New Budget Resolution

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 06:00 PM PST

On Wednesday afternoon, one day after reintroducing his Federal Reserve Transparency Act, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) took to the Senate floor to slam his fellow Republicans for the $9.7 trillion of debt that a newly introduced budget resolution will tack on to the country's already out of control debt total.

Senate Budget Committee Chair Michael Enzi (R-WY) introduced a budget resolution on Tuesday that is being touted as the first step the newly sworn in congress is taking to repealing Obamacare. The legislation includes "reconciliation instructions" that would allow congress to dismantle the health care law as part of reconciling taxes and spending with the budget blueprint.

According to Paul, "there is a time and a place to debate Obamacare" but this new piece of legislation is a budget and he is unwilling to support the debt it will accumulate.

"Republicans won the White House. Republicans control the Senate. Republicans control the House. And what will the first order of business be for the new Republican majority?" Paul asked.

"To pass a budget that never balances," the Kentucky Senator answered his own question. "To pass a budget that will add $9.7 trillion dollars of new debt in tens years."

"Is that really what we campaigned on?" Paul asked on. "Is that really what the Republican party represents?"

After stating that he is with his fellow Republicans for the repeal of Obamacare, Senator Paul went on to ask "why should we vote on a budget that doesn't represent our conservative view?"

Ahead of the snow, toll for Express Lanes in Virginia rises over $30 during evening rush hour

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 05:36 PM PST

WASHINGTON - We all know traffic in the D.C. region can be a trying experience with long commutes and delays, especially with precipitation falling in the area. But as the first snowfall arrived in the D.C. region Thursday evening, commuters driving during the evening rush hour in Northern Virginia found using the Express Lanes would be very costly.

A FOX 5 staff member driving on Interstate 495 found a sign showing the toll for the Express Lanes starting from nearby the Tysons Corner area to the I-395/95 exit would cost a whopping $30! Using the lanes to I-66 would be just shy of $10.

Breaking: Feds Announce Takeover of US Electoral Process

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 05:33 PM PST

DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson designates elections 'Critical Infrastructure'

US election systems will henceforth be treated as "critical infrastructure," the Department of Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson decreed Friday in a move some are describing as a major federal overreach.

In a letter to the Associated Press, Johnson revealed the US government would monitor and intervene in future elections, a process previously handled on a state-by-state basis.

"Given the vital role elections play in this country, it is clear that certain systems and assets of election infrastructure meet the definition of critical infrastructure, in fact and in law," Johnson stated. "Particularly in these times, this designation is simply the right and obvious thing to do."

CBS News sent out a tweet claiming the suspected shooter told the FBI last year that he was forced to fight for ISIS.

Police Cite Three Poachers; Charge Two for Drug Possession

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 05:30 PM PST

Deer poaching and drug possession cases highlight recent enforcement actions taken by the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

A Delaware man stopped Monday evening in Worcester County for negligent driving and using a light to illuminate a farm field was arrested for drug possession.

Thomas Alan Peacock, 22, of Selbyville, was seen driving erratically on Swamp Road near Blueberry Road in Whaleyville, causing deep ruts in the dirt surface and making the road impassible for other motorists. He was shining his headlights onto the field.

A records check indicated that Peacock's driver's license was suspended. Officers found a hypodermic needle and spoon used for heroin on Peacock and a pipe used for marijuana in the vehicle.

Peacock was issued five citations: possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license, spotlighting without implement and negligent driving.

His passenger, Matthew Alan Meals, 22, also of Selbyville, was charged with marijuana possession and malicious destruction of property.

A court date has not been set.

Two Frederick men were charged with killing three deer on the campus of Montgomery College on New Year's Eve.

A security guard on rounds saw two men drive through the Germantown campus in a pickup truck, stop and shoot at a herd of deer. They got out of the truck and dragged a deer carcass off the steps of a building and loaded it into the truck bed.

The guard asked co-workers to call 911. Montgomery County Police stopped the truck, found three dead deer and contacted Natural Resources Police.

Jaron Randall Hall, 30, and James Andrew Fernandez, 25, volunteered that they stopped at the college and killed the deer before going to work.

Each man was charged with hunting on private land without written permission, hunting within a safety zone and hunting deer at night. Hall was additionally charged with shooting from a road and having a loaded crossbow in a vehicle. The men were issued written warnings for failing to tag and report their kills.

Officers confiscated Hall's crossbow and case, crossbow bolts, handheld spotlight and a headlamp. The deer were too damaged to be donated to a food bank and were disposed of.

A court date has not been set.

A West Virginia man was charged Monday with multiple hunting violations after an officer found discrepancies in his deer harvesting record.

Larry Edgar Cook, 54, of Falling Waters, told police he had taken three antlerless deer this year on public land in Washington County. Two of the deer were harvested during rifle season, which was closed to antlerless deer and the third was taken during muzzleloader season, which was closed to antlerless deer as well.

The officer reviewing Cook's license found that he had failed to complete the Big Game Harvest Record by writing down the confirmation numbers for each of the antlerless deer he had harvested this season.

Cook was issued four citations: two counts of hunting deer during a closed season, one count of exceeding seasonal regional bag limits, one count of failing to record a kill on harvest record, and 15 warnings for other harvest record and game violations.

He is due in Washington County District Court April 4.

Ruled by DC: Get The Feds Out Of Western Lands

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 05:00 PM PST

In the final days of his administration, President Obama has decided that with the stroke of pen, he shall further consolidate direct federal control over lands within Western states. Specifically, Obama created the Bear Ears National Monument and the Gold Butte National Monument in Utah and Nevada, respectively. The Obama Administration claims that Obama's unilateral edict was necessary because Congress had not passed any legislation on the matter.

Indeed, the Obama-appointed Interior Secretary stated that "protecting the area using legislation would have been preferable" but that in the absence of legislation, it was necessary to simply declare the lands to be National Monuments.

In other words, the democratic, constitutional process of Congressional lawmaking was inconvenient for the President. So, he decided to rule by proclamation instead, giving the Governor of Utah barely an hour's notice before the proclamation was made public.
It's Not About Conservation — It's About Federal Control

Now, we should first note that the overwhelming majority of lands newly designated as National Monument lands were already federal lands to begin with, and have been controlled largely by the US Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service.

Moreover, it is not the case that opponents to the new designation are mostly people who want to privatize the land or make it easier to mine or develop the land. In fact, many opponents of the designation oppose it because they fear Monument status will lead to greaterdevelopment of the area as a tourist mecca.

In other cases, members of Indian tribes object to making sacred lands part of a federally-controlled National Monument area.

And, of course, throughout Western states, public lands continue to be a lucrative source of tourist dollars and eco-tourism. The old caricature of pro-conservationist leftists and strip-mining conservatives has long been just that: a caricature.

The reality is that nowadays many private firms and local governments depend on public lands for their livelihood and revenue, and these groups have quite a bit of influence at the state legislatures in question. Preserving natural spaces from development can mean big business and Western-state politicians know it:

Pistol-wielding Texas grandma runs off armed intruder

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 04:30 PM PST

(BOWIE COUNTY, Texas) — A 74-year-old Texas grandmother stood down an armed intruder with the help of her .38-caliber pistol, ABC affiliate KTRK reports.

Rebbie Roberson, of Bowie County, was seated in her recliner getting ready to watch the evening news when she saw a man wearing a mask and gloves break into her home.

"And when I started to get up, he was in here on me with a gun facing me right to my face," Roberson said.

To the intruder's shock, Roberson calmly walked over to a table and picked up her gun.

"So I had to walk right out in front of him," Roberson said. "I didn't know if he was going to kill me or what. I reached over there and grabbed this gun. And when I swerved around, I pointed it at him and he ran."

FBI Claims DNC 'Inhibited' Investigation Of Stolen Emails

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 04:00 PM PST

The Democratic National Committee "inhibited" the FBI's investigation of email hacks by refusing to grant investigators access to the party's computer servers, the bureau is claiming.

"The FBI repeatedly stressed to DNC officials the necessity of obtaining direct access to servers and data, only to be rebuffed until well after the initial compromise had been mitigated," an FBI official said Thursday, according to BuzzFeed News.

"This left the FBI no choice but to rely upon a third party for information. These actions caused significant delays and inhibited the FBI from addressing the intrusion earlier."

Assault Over NYE Food

OCEAN CITY — A Belair, Md. woman was arrested on assault charges last weekend after allegedly throwing a beer can at the back of a man's head during an early New Year's Day morning argument over late night food.

Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) officers responded to a midtown hotel for a reported domestic dispute that had already occurred. One officer met with a male victim in the reported hotel room, while another officer met with the suspect, identified as Jessica Pasko, 31, of Belair, in the hotel lobby.

Pasko told police the couple had dated on and off in the past, but that she had broken off their relationship about a year earlier. However, they remained friends and came to Ocean City last weekend for a New Year's Eve celebration. Pasko told police the pair had been out drinking off and on throughout the day and then returned to their room.

Chicago Police Downplays Torture: Kids Make "Stupid Decisions"

Politically corrupt department withers under pressure

Chicago police have come under fire for their handling of what seems to be an obvious hate crime and possible case of domestic terrorism.

Following the arrests of four black suspects involved in livestreaming their physical abuse, knifing and persecution of a disabled young white man, Chicago police held a press conference in which they gave lukewarm, politically correct answers to questions from reporters regarding evidence already available in widely distributed videos.

"Kids make stupid decisions – I shouldn't call them kids, they're legally adults, but they're young adults and they make stupid decisions," responded CPD Commander Kevin Duffin when asked if perpetrators in the video shouting, "F**k white people. F**k Donald Trump," at their victim was sufficient indication that a hate crime had taken place.

Trump: Mexico still paying for the wall

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 01:30 PM PST

President-elect Trump tweeted Friday that the media was lying again about who would pay for the wall, after late Thursday reports said he was pushing Congress to pay for it.

Trump indicated that Congress may end up appropriating money to build the wall, but insisted that Mexico would ultimately pay the U.S. back. He said doing it this way would let the U.S. immediately start building the wall, instead of waiting for Mexico to pony up billions of dollars first.

"The dishonest media does not report that any money spent on building the Great Wall (for sake of speed), will be paid back by Mexico later!" he tweeted.

In a statement issued Thursday night, Kittleman called the bill a, "hollow political statement."

Kittleman says because it doesn't supersede federal law so it does not stop federal immigration officers from coming into the county to deport undocumented immigrants.

Kittleman also fears the bill would jeopardize police investigations into gang activity, in which county police deal with federal agents.

He also fears the county may lose federal money.

Salisbury Elks Lodge Looking For A Bailout

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 12:34 PM PST

The Salisbury Elks Lodge is looking for $1,500,000.00 to renovate and upgrade just the building alone.

In my honest opinion, the sad part about many of these non profit organizations, (much like liberal elected officials) tend to ignore infrastructure, upkeep and maintenance. All too often, in the end, it's the shock factor. I'm broke, everyone else help me!

Well start a Go Fund Me account and see how fast you raise money. The next thing we know we'll see Mayor Day running to the Council asking for a check.

In business, you either survive or you fail. How these people can come out at the last minute and claim, OMG, our roof is leaking really bad, like they didn't know that already! You mean to tell me you don't have members that do roofing? You mean you've ignored the stains in the ceilings for years and did nothing?

If you refuse to use a percentage of your funds to maintain your facility, why should ANYONE believe that IF they donated almost two million dollars that the next millennial generations running the place will keep it up, NOT.

It's time to let go and sell the property to someone who knows how to run and maintain a professional business. Stop asking the public to "bail you out" the millennial way.

Man led OCPD on high-speed chase

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 11:30 AM PST

A high-speed pursuit that started in Ocean City last week ended near Ocean View, Delaware after police there disabled the vehicle and arrested the driver.

Police said that around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 30, a black SUV was spotted traveling north in the southbound lane of Coastal Highway. The driver, later identified as Timothy J. Drabic, 54 of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, was reportedly driving at speeds up to 100 mph.

According to an Ocean City Police department statement, the SUV swerved and nearly struck an OCPD cruiser that was parked in the shoulder of the highway.

"It seemed as if the vehicle's driver attempted to ram one of our officers who stopped in the bus lane near Gold Coast Mall with his lights flashing," Ocean City Police public affairs specialist Lindsay Richard said.

Liberal churches are dying. But conservative churches are thriving.

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 10:00 AM PST

A Canadian study found that conservative churches are still growing, while less orthodox congregations dwindle away.

Mainline Protestant churches are in trouble: A 2015 report by the Pew Research Center found that these congregations, once a mainstay of American religion, are now shrinking by about 1 million members annually. Fewer members not only means fewer souls saved, a frightening thought for some clergy members, but also less income for churches, further ensuring their decline.

Faced with this troubling development, clergy members have made various efforts to revive church attendance. It was almost 20 years ago that John Shelby Spong, a U.S. bishop in the Episcopalian Church, published his book "Why Christianity Must Change or Die." It was presented as an antidote to the crisis of decline in mainline churches. Retail stores are getting crushed after reporting disappointing holiday sales

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 09:37 AM PST

Holiday sales weren't too hot at two of America's largest retailers.

Both Kohl's and Macy's reported lower sales during November and December 2016 than the year before. Both retailers announced sales declines of 2.1% from the same two months in 2015.

Additionally, both Kohl's and Macy's said that sales at owned and operated stores were down by 2.7% this holiday season.

"Sales were volatile throughout the holiday season. Strong sales on Black Friday and during the week before Christmas were offset by softness in early November and December," Kohl's CEO Kevin Mansell said in a press release.

Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren cited similar patterns for the sales disappointment.

"While our sales trend is consistent with the lower end of our guidance, we had anticipated sales would be stronger," Lundgren said in a release. "We believe that our performance during the holiday season reflects the broader challenges facing much of the retail industry."

Union: Baltimore City Police in ‘Crisis’ Due to Officer Shortage

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 09:30 AM PST

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Baltimore City's Police Union is sounding the alarm because they say the department is in crisis due to the fact that it has too few officers.

According to a new report, there are more than 100 fewer Baltimore City PD officers than last year, with the union saying this poses a safety concern as officers are being overworked.

The police union president calls the situation "dire."

"You get in a crisis mode like we're in right now with crime out of control and not enough uniformed officers on the street," said Lt. Gene Ryan, president of the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police. "I would say it's at a crisis point."

The economist behind Universal Basic Income: Give all citizens free money to help combat a 'neofascist wave of populism'

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 09:15 AM PST

In 2011 Guy Standing, then an economist at the University of Bath, prefaced his new book with a warning.

He described a growing class of "precariat" workers, alienated by a western political agenda which had, since the 1970s, promoted market-led competition above job security. Real wages across the west had stalled for decades and "flexible" work was becoming the norm, leaving many millions around the world "without an anchor of stability."

This precariat, he said, "are prone to listen to ugly voices, and to use their votes and money to give those voices a political platform of increasing influence." Such conditions had created "an incipient political monster," and action was needed "before that monster comes to life."

Five years on, Standing says, "that monster has arrived."

"The precariat I've written about consists of several factions," he told Business Insider from his home in Switzerland.

Trump’s Plan For Obamacare Finally Revealed- It’s Done For

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 09:07 AM PST

Republicans have been promising to repeal and replace Obamacare since the day it was signed. After years and years of being unable to act, Republicans now have the majority of both House and Senate, as well as the White House.

President-elect Trump has made it very clear that he plans to destroy Obamacare without any second thoughts and I gotta say I like that.

Mike Pence had a meeting with House GOP lawmakers Wednesday morning where he vowed that he and President-elect Trump would do everything in their power to repeal and replace the Obamacare law that has forced so many people out of perfectlygood healthcare plans.

"The first order of business is to repeal and replace Obamacare, and that was our message today and it will be our message on Capitol Hill, and it needs to be done," Pence told reporters. "Not just as a promise kept, but because in the course of this election, the American people have a choice."

THIS IS HUGE! NATIONAL Conceal Carry Reciprocity Is OFFICIALLY In The Works!

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 09:00 AM PST

Not every state has identical laws when it comes to the Second Amendment and concealed carry, despite a concealed carry permit being a legitimate legal document.

Starting today, however, we have hope that national concealed carry reciprocity will soon be the law of the land, allowing you to concealed carry in any state in the nation that also allows concealed carry, provided you follow the laws of that state.

From The Federalist Papers Project:

Yesterday was a big opening day for the 115th Congress. Sen. Ted Cruz made good on his word to introduce an amendment regarding Congressional term limits, and now Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) introduced a huge piece of legislation: national concealed carry reciprocity.

Hudson's office released a summary of the groundbreaking legislation:

Rep. Hudson's bill, which is supported by major pro-Second Amendment groups, would allow people with a state-issued concealed carry license or permit to conceal a handgun in any other state that allows concealed carry, as long as the permit holder follows the laws of that state. It also allows residents of Constitutional carry states the ability to carry in other states that recognize their own resident's right to concealed carry.

Make Government Schools Compete or Die

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 08:45 AM PST

If you pay taxes and take responsibility for getting your own children to and from school, you may be interested in learning that the government spent $23,233,698,000 in the 2012-2013 school year transporting other people's children to and from public schools around this country.

When those students got off the bus, taxpayers spent even more money on them — for things other than education in a classroom.

For example, according to the Digest of Education Statistics published in December by the federal government's National Center for Education Statistics, the government spent $21,862,081,000 in the 2012-2013 school year on food services in public schools.

That included $10,110,833,000 on supplies for these food services, $6,607,701,000 on salaries for the people working in them, and $2,529,156,000 on their employee benefits.

Students in public schools today can get both a free ride and a free (or subsidized) lunch.

But taxpayers cover the costs.

Intel report says terrorists scrap large-scale plots for stealth solo attacks

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 08:15 AM PST

A confidential government report says terrorist groups such as the Islamic State have all but abandoned trying to put together huge plots such as the Sept. 11 attacks and warns counter-terrorism agencies of a "new landscape" where lone killers strike and massacre quickly thanks to the digital age.

The report by the National Counter-terrorism Center marks a historical shift that requires the FBI, CIA and other agencies to try to locate the mobile and digital-savvy loner, and not necessarily detect a complex plot.

"The steady rise in the number of lone actor operations is a trend which coincides with the deepening and broadening of the digital revolution as well as the encouragement of such operations by terrorist groups because intensified [counter-terrorism] operations have disrupted their ability to launch larger plots," the NCTC says in a report obtained by The Washington Times. "Lone actors now have greater capability to create and broadcast material than a decade ago, while violent extremists can contact and interact with potential recruits with greater ease."

The report was circulated Dec. 28 to counter-terrorism agencies across the country.

The analysis says the new faces of extremist violence are "small autonomous cells" and "individual terrorism."

Study looks at impact of adjunct hiring on college spending patterns

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 08:00 AM PST

Study suggests the funds institutions gain aren't going to instruction.

Colleges and universities of all kinds are increasingly relying on non-tenure-track faculty members. And administrators frequently defend their hiring choices by citing money. Since adjuncts are paid less than those on the tenure track (and frequently lack benefits), it costs colleges less to have a section taught by an adjunct than by someone who is tenured or on the tenure track.

But where do the savings go?

The American Institutes of Research released two studies Wednesday to answer that question. Both studies use data from the Delta Cost Project -- which is highly regarded for tracking how colleges spend money -- and both were sponsored by the TIAA Institute.

With regard to savings, the studies suggest that what colleges are saving on instructional costs isn't resulting in more investment in tenure-track faculty, as some might hope. Rather, the savings appear to be showing up elsewhere, if at all.

Here are some of the key findings:

Private four-year colleges that use large proportions of non-tenure-track faculty members spend 37 percent less on full-time faculty members of all kinds than do similar institutions with small shares of non-tenure-track faculty members. But looking at spending on all categories of full-time employees, these institutions are spending only 19 percent less than those with small shares of non-tenure-track faculty members. So more spending seems possible on the administrative side of the house.

America to Obama: Stop now. You lost.

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 07:45 AM PST

Kevin Lee believes the main point of last year's election was a wholesale rejection of President Obama's policies.

"So I wish the president would stop pushing those very same agenda policies like Obamacare, or issuing more executive orders and tacking on more regulations as he is walking out the door," said Lee, the president of Lee Supply Company in this Mon Valley town.

"These are issues and policies voters clearly wanted nothing to do with," he said.

Since November, Obama has conducted a flurry of actions and issued executive orders that have not just irked Trump voters, but also many Democrats.

"His tin ear has been breathtaking," said Anthony Ripepi, a 54-year-old chief of surgery at a suburban Pittsburgh hospital.

Ripepi also found Washington Democrats standing behind Obamacare praising the law on Wednesday an amusing stage setting, "considering I have not seen or heard anyone of them running on the merits of that law since it was passed," he said.

Obama made it clear in his interview with his former chief strategist David Axelrod last month he believes he and his policies would have beaten Donald Trump last November. He is reinforcing that belief by continuously issuing executive orders and attempting to salvage his unpopular Obamacare.

Fed: 4 Charged In Liquor Board Bribery Conspiracy

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 07:30 AM PST

Prince George's County Liquor Board Officials and Business Owners Charged in Federal Bribery Conspiracy

"Our government is not supposed to work that way"

Greenbelt, Maryland – Prince George's County Liquor Board officials, David Dae Sok Son, age 40, of Bowie, Maryland, and Anuj Sud, age 39, of Hyattsville, Maryland, and Prince George's County business owners, Young Jung Paig, age 62, of Beltsville, Maryland, and Shin Ja Lee, age 55, of Landover, Maryland, are charged by criminal complaints with a bribery conspiracy. The defendants allegedly conspired to engage in bribery in order to influence public officials in the performance of their official duties in Prince George's County. Son, Paig, and Lee are also charged with a bribery conspiracy to influence the State of Maryland.

The charges were announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Gordon B. Johnson of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office; Special Agent in Charge Thomas Jankowski of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation, Washington, D.C. Field Office; and Chief Hank Stawinski of the Prince George's County Police Department.

"The defendants allegedly paid cash bribes to state and local officials in Prince George's County in return for favorable action concerning liquor licenses," said U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. "Our government is not supposed to work that way."

"Public corruption is a betrayal of trust and erodes the very core of the government's purpose to serve the people," said Special Agent Gordon B. Johnson of the FBI's Baltimore Division.

Son currently is Director of the Prince George's County Board of License Commissioners (Liquor Board). Son previously was a Commissioner on the Liquor Board from 2005 through 2014. During the 2015 Maryland legislative session, Son served as a liaison for the Prince George's County Senate delegation. He returned to the Liquor Board later in 2015 as its Director.

Sud is a current Liquor Board Commissioner and has been a licensed attorney in Maryland since 2005, with offices in College Park.

Paig is the owner of Central Avenue Restaurant & Liquor Store and the resident agent of Weeping Willow, Inc.; and Lee is the owner of Palmer Liquor Store and the resident agent of Multi-Bil, Inc. Both stores are located in Prince George's County, Maryland.

Son, Paig, and Lee

The affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint alleges that Son solicited and facilitated bribes, from lobbyists and business owners, including from Paig and Lee. The bribes ranged from $1,000 to $5,000. From 2012 to 2013, Son facilitated three bribe payments to an elected official, for assistance in moving the source's business to Prince George's County, and to obtain County grants controlled by the elected official.

Beginning in 2015, Son solicited and facilitated bribe payments from lobbyists and business owners who were interested in the "Sunday Sales Bill," which established up to 100 Sunday liquor sales permits in Prince George's County. The bribes were intended to influence public officials in the performance of their official duties. For example, in 2015, Son had asked the elected official to assist in passing the Sunday Sales bill by talking to one of his colleagues about the bill; both subsequently voted in favor of the bill. On April 22, 2015, after the passage of the bill, Son arranged a lunch with the elected official, with Paig and Lee. During the lunch, Son told the elected official to meet Paig in the men's bathroom, saying that Paig is "…going to hook you up." In the men's bathroom, Paig handed the elected official an envelope containing a total of $4,000 cash. On October 19, 2015, Son received a $4,000 bribe payment from a lobbyist for his assistance in ensuring that the lobbyist's clients received Sunday Sales licenses.

Lee and Paig subsequently talked to Son about getting beneficial legislation introduced related to the Sunday Sales bill and indicated that they would be willing to pay $50,000 to make that happen. Son spoke with a second elected official who agreed to introduce legislation. On November 10, 2015, Son arranged for Paig and Lee to meet with the second elected official so they could make a "down payment." After the meeting, law enforcement observed Paig and the second elected official get into the elected official's car, while Lee and Son waited in the parking lot. Shortly after Paig got out of the car, the elected official drove directly to a bank in the same shopping center. Bank surveillance video shows the elected official pulling a stack of cash out of his right pocket and handing it to the teller, then doing the same from his left pocket. Bank records show that the elected official deposited a total of $4,000.

Sud

According to the affidavit filed in support of Sud's criminal complaint, in September 2015, Sud solicited bribes from a lobbyist in exchange for Sud's assistance with liquor board matters. At a subsequent meeting, Sud and the lobbyist discussed Sud voting favorably in two upcoming hearings concerning the lobbyist's clients, in exchange for money. The lobbyist advised that the hearings would take place on December 2 and December 15, 2015. At each of the hearings, Sud took favorable action on behalf of the lobbyist's client. Following each hearing, the lobbyist met with Sud and gave Sud $1,000 cash for Sud's assistance. Similarly, on November 30, 2016, Sud received a $1,000 bribe payment in exchange for taking favorable action on behalf of the lobbyist's client.

If convicted, Son, Sud, Paig and Lee all face a maximum sentence of five years in prison for the conspiracy, and a maximum of ten years in prison for bribery. Initial appearances are scheduled before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles B. Day in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, 6500 Cherrywood Lane, for Son and Sud beginning at 1:30 p.m., and for Lee and Paig beginning at 3:15 p.m.

A criminal complaint is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by criminal complaint is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the FBI, IRS-CI, and Prince George's County Police Department for their work in the investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas P. Windom and James A. Crowell IV, who are prosecuting the case.

He published his final "Random Thoughts" piece on December 27. Here are a few priceless excerpts:

Warning America: "If you want to understand the fatal dangers facing America today, read 'The Gathering Storm' by Winston Churchill. The book is not about America, the Middle East, or nuclear missiles. But it shows Europe's attitudes and delusions…"

Addressing academic idiocy: "Black adults, during the years when I was growing up in Harlem, had far less education than black adults today — but far more common sense. In an age of artificial intelligence, too many of our schools and colleges are producing artificial stupidity, among both blacks and whites."

Ocean Pines Crews Working to Prepare for Possible Snow Storm

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 06:36 AM PST

As the Ocean Pines community braces for a potential snow storm this weekend, crews are working today, Jan. 6, to install snow salt spreaders and plows on trucks. The public works department will be staging equipment in locations throughout Ocean Pines before the start of the storm.

Director of Public Works, Eddie Wells, has reported that crews are monitoring conditions. Plowing of roadways would start at a three (3) inch snowfall or when conditions warrant. The Ocean Pines Public Works Department uses a seven-truck system, plowing all streets to make sure that all roads are passable for emergency vehicles. After precipitation stops, all intersections and side streets will be widened. Cul de sacs will be done after roads are completed.

The Director of Public Works along with the Ocean Pines Police Department will determine when to salt roadways, bridges, police and fire departments at the first sign of snow or ice. Top priority are Ocean Parkway, entrances in and out of 'The Pines,' all bridges, fire stations, police department followed by high traffic roads. After precipitation has stopped intersections and other areas requested by emergency officials (police, fire) or at the request of a resident.

The public works employees encourage drivers to stay off the road, if at all possible. Drivers are urged to keep a safe distance from plow trucks. Please do not pass snow plows and salting trucks.

Crews with the Ocean Pines Public Works Department are on-call as of Friday morning, Jan. 6, and will be in to work Friday night or early Saturday as soon as it warrants. To help with the removal of snow, Ocean Pines residents are asked to park their vehicles in driveways.

Maryland's highest court hears arguments from Holder, opponents on bail reform

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 06:30 AM PST

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder joined Maryland's top attorney and judges Thursday in urging the state's highest court to adopt new rules designed to prevent people who have been arrested from languishing in jail because they are unable to afford bail.

The Court of Appeals put off voting on a change until February, after a hearing that stretched more than six hours and included testimony from dozens of people. The proposed revisions call for judges and court commissioners to view requiring bail as a last option after considering a defendant's financial means.

An initial motion to adopt the changes failed to pass after garnering three votes from the seven judges.

Critics of the bail system say too many people are detained without being found guilty because they're given a bail that they can't pay. The purpose of bail is not to hold someone, but to ensure appearance in court. Judges can order someone held without bond if they believe they are dangerous or a flight risk

More than 1,000 to attend conservative Presbyterian gathering

A fast-growing theologically conservative Presbyterian denomination will be holding its latest National Gathering later this month in South Carolina.

The Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians, a denomination formed in 2012 in response to the increasingly liberal positions of the Presbyterian Church (USA), will be holding its 2017 National Gathering Jan. 24-26.

First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, a congregation of about 3,500 members that joined ECO back in 2012, is the scheduled location for the major gathering.

The Rev. Richard Gibbons, senior pastor of FPC Greenville, told The Christian Post that his church was chosen as the site for the gathering for multiple reasons. "A large central meeting area was required for the plenary sessions, as was multiple breakout rooms for smaller seminars and workshops," said Gibbons.

In Massive Blow To California Unions, A Second Court Rules That Pension Benefits Can Be Reduced

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 05:30 AM PST

Back in September, we noted that, in a surprisingly logical decision particularly for a state like California which is typically devoid of all reason, a court upheld the rights of Marin County (and it's taxpayers) to reduce final year salary levels utilized to calculate pension payments. The ruling was meant to protect taxpayers against "salary spiking," a practice whereby union employees artificially drive up their final year salary, by taking cash vacation payouts or 1x bonus payments for example, in an effort to game the annual pension payment they'll then receive in perpetuity.

Now, according to Pension & Investments, a second California court in San Francisco has made a similar ruling, finding that while a public employee does have a "vested right" to a pension it is only to a "reasonable pension."

A second California appeals court panel has said that vested pension rights can be reduced or eliminated in California as long as employees still receive a pension that is "substantial" and "reasonable," court filings show.

The Dec. 30 decision by a three-member panel in San Francisco affirmed a state pension reform law that went into effect in 2013 and eliminated the right of participants of the $302.4 billion California Public Employees' Retirement System, Sacramento, to enhance their pension by buying retirement credits. A lower court in Alameda County in 2015 had ruled that the pension enhancement benefits could be eliminated.

The enhanced benefit, known as an airtime service credit, allowed CalPERS participants to increase their retirement benefit by up to five years by making additional contributions from their salary.

Email Headache Returns: New Clinton messages show passwords, schedules flowed freely

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 05:15 AM PST

The election's over – but Hillary Clinton's emails are still coming to light. And they help illustrate why the FBI declared she was "extremely careless" with the information flowing across her secret server.

A new batch of messages released by the State Department on Tuesday shows the former secretary of state and her team routinely shared her upcoming schedules, talking points and sensitive items – such as her iPad password – via the homebrewed system.

Other newly revealed emails, which were posted as the result of litigation, show Clinton's top advisers griping about her during her time as secretary of State; an Asian ruler who later implemented Sharia law saying he considered former President Bill Clinton part of his "family"; and Clinton talking about Justin Cooper, one of the key figures who administered to her private server.

High School Forced to Change Mascot over Accusation 'Stallions' Is 'Sexist'

Posted: 06 Jan 2017 04:00 AM PST

A school district in Kentucky has canceled the school's "Stallions" mascot after a petition from the community argued that the mascot was "inappropriate and sexist."

The petition, which garnered just over 200 signatures, was successful in its efforts to have the Fayette County school district changed the new Frederick Douglass High School's mascot from the "Stallions" to something more appropriate for female sports teams.

This is inappropriate and sexist when you consider the definition from "YourDictionary" …"The definition of a stallion is a male horse that has not been castrated, used for breeding or is slang for a powerful and virile man who has a lot of lovers" and from Wikipedia…"because of their instincts as herd animals, they may be prone to aggressive behavior, particularly toward other stallions, and thus require careful management by knowledgeable handlers. However, with proper training and management, stallions are effective equine athletes at the highest levels of many disciplines."

On Wednesday, news broke that four black teenagers had violently assaulted a disabled white man while yelling "f*ck Trump!" and "f*ck white people!" While no concrete evidence has emerged linking the attackers to the "Black Lives Matter" movement, conservatives quickly branded this attack the "BLM Kidnapping," and attacked the media coverage of the event.

The violent crime was broadcast on Facebook Live, but Facebook has since removed the video. CNN reported that the video showed a man tied up with his mouth covered, cowering in the corner of a room. Shouting "f*ck Donald Trump" and "f*ck white people," the four black teens laughed while kicking and punching the man, and even cutting into his forehead with a knife.

But some admittedly strange things happened as the news broke. The Chicago Police Department hesitated to classify the attack as a hate crime. "CNN Tonight" host Don Lemon hesitated to call the attack "evil." And on Thursday morning, The New York Times' Charles M. Blow published a column calling for more protests against Trump's presidency, in a post entitled "The Anti-Inauguration."

Radio personality Steven Crowder wasted no time denouncing the media's reaction to the news. Tweeting to his 330,000 followers, he argued that this event "is proof positive that the left doesn't care about racism. Only when it's a political tool."
