Subject: John Mackenzie Wessels

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 09:00 PM PST

John "Mac" Mackenzie Wessels, 23, a bright, gentle son, most recently of Pasadena, CA passed away on January 13, 2017 of a drug overdose. Mac, the only child of Debbie and Michael Wessels, was raised in the loving and fun "village" of High Banks in Salisbury, Maryland.

This obituary is shared with the hope that others will read it and have more insight into the mental health crisis our children face and it's direct relationship to the disease of addiction.

Mac was a solid student and a happy kid. With his seemingly endless positive traits, he had the potential to be anything from a captivating politician to a brilliant engineer, but addictive behaviors began to creep into Mac's life before leaving for college. Recognizing his struggles and strife, the family engaged in counseling with the hope to provide Mac with a toolbox for life.

He graduated from The Salisbury School in 2011 and received the Presidential Scholarship to attend Rollins College, Winter Park, FL. He left for college in fall but his anxiety and depression plus his addiction impeded his education. From there, the next four years were a blur of drug rehab facilities, moments of recovery, followed by relapses..

Mass Exodus From High-Taxes - Which States Did Americans Leave In 2016?

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 08:00 PM PST

Migration patterns for 2016 show that Americans tended to move away from high-tax states and into states where residents keep more of what they earn.

United Van Lines, the nation's largest moving company, recently released its annual movers study report showing that South Dakota overtook Oregon as the top inbound destination. Generally, more people moved toward the West, and states in the Northeast saw the largest exodus of residents. The top four outbound states in 2016, in order, were New Jersey, Illinois, New York, and Connecticut.

The Tax Foundation pointed out in a recent blog post that those results are similar to the organization's annual state business tax climate index.

In fact, New Jersey, which saw an outbound rate of 63 percent—meaning nearly two people moved out of the Garden State for every person who moved in, also finished last in that index. New York had the second-worst business tax climate, according to the Tax Foundation. Connecticut was eighth-worst while Illinois was more middle of the pack.

The Tax Foundation said the absence of a major tax such as the corporate income tax, individual income tax, or sales tax is a common factor among most of the states that rank in the top 10 on the business climate tax index.

Nicole Kaeding, author of the migration post, noted that taxes are sometimes overcited as a primary reason why people move out of states, but they certainly can play a significant role, as is evidenced by the similar results in the Tax Foundation and United Van Lines studies.

House approves bill barring taxpayer money for abortions

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:30 PM PST

Washington (CNN)The House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday barring the use of any taxpayer money for abortions, days before a large contingent of anti-abortion activists are scheduled to attend the annual March for Life in Washington.

The measure passed mostly along party lines, 238-183.

Currently, the so-called "Hyde Amendment," which is regularly attached to annual funding bills, already prohibits federal agencies from using funds for abortion services. The measure approved on Tuesday would make that amendment permanent.

The amendment includes an exception for those abortions that are undertaken to protect the life of the mother or done in cases of rape or incest.

Witness: Kellyanne Conway punches man in face at Trump inaugural ball

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 05:30 PM PST

Top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway punched a man in the face at least three times just hours after the new president was sworn in, a witness claims.

Conway was reportedly attempting to break up a brawl involving two tuxedo-clad men at the exclusive Liberty Ball on Friday evening.

"But the two men wouldn't break up the fight and Conway apparently punched one of them in the face with closed fists at least three times, according to the stunned onlooker," the New York Daily News reported.

The report didn't indicate what sparked the fist fight.

WND's request for comment from Conway hadn't been returned at the time of this report.

Fox Business correspondent Charlie Gasparino was a witness cited by the Daily News.

Gasparino claimed he met actor Scott Baio outside the ball and "a bunch of anarchist thugs began to descend on us." The "thugs" allegedly shouted, "Hey Chachi, are you fascist?"

With Obama Leaving, Congressional GOP Moves to Gut D.C.'s Progressive Laws

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 05:00 PM PST

Congressional Republicans are making an aggressive push to gut the District's progressive policies, introducing bills in recent days to repeal the heavily Democratic city's gun-control measures, undo its new law allowing physician-assisted suicide and ban the District from using local tax dollars to provide abortions for poor women.

The bills have begun arriving on the eve of President Obama's departure from the White House, where he has stifled repeated attempts to pass similar measures with a veto threat.

Those decisions will soon be in the hands of President-elect Donald Trump, and conservative House members said they think that Trump will not impede the will of a newly emboldened Republican-led Congress.

US sent $221 million to Palestinians in Obama's last hours

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 04:30 PM PST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials say the Obama administration in its waning hours defied Republican opposition and quietly released $221 million to the Palestinian Authority that GOP members of Congress had been blocking.

A State Department official and several congressional aides said the outgoing administration formally notified Congress it would spend the money Friday morning. The official said former Secretary of State John Kerry had informed some lawmakers of the move shortly before he left the State Department for the last time Thursday. The aides said written notification dated Jan. 20 was sent to Congress just hours before Donald Trump took the oath of office.

In addition to the $221 million for the Palestinians, the Obama administration also told Congress on Friday it was going ahead with the release of another $6 million in foreign affairs spending, including $4 million for climate change programs and $1.25 million for U.N. organizations, the congressional aides said. The aides and the State Department official weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter and demanded anonymity.

Advancement of Capital Improvement Plan 2018-2022

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 04:11 PM PST

Salisbury – Mayor Jacob Day is pleased to announce that last night the City Council voted unanimously to adopt the five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for fiscal years 2018–2022. The CIP, a document that promotes financial stability through long term planning of resources and needs, is reviewed and updated annually. Many of Mayor Day's additions to the document focus on improving quality of life for Salisbury residents through the enhancement of cultural amenities and recreational spaces.

Mayor and Council anticipate that these investments will result in significant and lasting economic benefits to the City. Master plans for the Bicycle Network, City Park, Riverwalk, Urban Greenway and Zoo are all incorporated into this CIP. Mayor Day hopes these projects will not only unify the City, but also bring it one step closer to his vision of making the City of Salisbury into one of the most thriving, successful small cities in America.

Mayor Day notes that this vision isn't one he can achieve by himself, but rather it will involve the whole community. He offers a call-to-action to the City, stating that it is not only his but everyone's responsibility to make sure that these plans are "achievable, implementable, and affordable." Mayor Day affirms that this CIP is all of those things, and that the City possesses the resources necessary to carry these projects out.

"This Capital Plan reflects the lowest requested amount in over a decade—by more than 15 million dollars," said the Mayor. "That doesn't mean we're expecting to do less; quite the opposite, actually. It means we're being smarter with how we plan to use the taxpayers' money. This budget planning document is the road map to how we will enhance the quality of life for our citizens, and ensure prosperity in the coming years. I'm thankful to the Council for their confidence in this vision."

Why Maine's Governor Thinks Civil Rights Leader John Lewis Should Thank White Men

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 04:00 PM PST

Maine's Republican Gov. Paul LePage said Tuesday that the NAACP should apologize to white America, making the comment just hours after he weighed in on the president-elect's Twitter beef with a black civil rights icon.

"I will just say this: John Lewis ought to look at history," LePage said during his weekly appearance on the George Hale and Ric Tyler Show, on Bangor-based radio station WVOM. "It was Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves, it was Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant who fought against Jim Crow laws. A simple thank you would suffice."

LePage's criticism was aimed at U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights leader and Democratic member of Congress from Georgia who called Donald Trump an "illegitimate president" and said he would not attend the inauguration. Trump answered Lewis on Twitter, saying Lewis was all talk and no action.

The feud prompted 42 Democratic members of Congress so far, including Maine's Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, to boycott the inauguration events in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

Frederick homeowner held intruder at gunpoint until officers arrived

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 03:39 PM PST

A Frederick woman held a man at gunpoint inside her home until police arrived for a reported home invasion late Saturday.

City officers were called to the 500 block of Goldspire Circle at 11:06 p.m. when a woman called 911 to report a man had broken into her home while she and another female resident were watching TV in the living room, according to charging documents. The man, later identified as Jose Mauricio Escobar-Flores, 40, was standing in the woman's kitchen holding a knife when police arrived.

After officers ordered Escobar-Flores to drop the knife and placed him in handcuffs, the women told police that they had been watching TV when they heard Escobar-Flores break the rear sliding glass door of their home, the documents state.

The women ran upstairs while Escobar-Flores was struggling with the door and, while one of the women called 911, the other armed herself with a handgun and ran back downstairs to confront the intruder.

Affordable Housing Required for Every Town, Rules New Jersey Supreme Court

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 03:00 PM PST

In a decision that could reshape hundreds of communities, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that municipalities must allow the development of affordable housing for poor and middle-class families whose needs were ignored for more than 16 years.

The state's top court voted 6-0 to reject arguments advanced by several towns, Governor Christie's administration and the League of Municipalities, who said local governments faced no legal requirement to provide affordable housing for poor and middle-class families during a period spanning from 1999 to 2015.

The ruling — and dozens of recent settlements negotiated separately by towns — are likely to spur the development of tens of thousands of affordable housing units in New Jersey over the next decade. But it is unclear exactly how many. Estimates vary widely and the Supreme Court did not settle that issue Wednesday.

Study: Savings Program Helps Poor Put Aside 4 Times More

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 02:00 PM PST

The report comes at a time when some federal policymakers want to end the program and while states and localities are launching similar initiatives of their own.

For almost 20 years, a little-known federal government program has tried to help low-income workers save money. Until now, no one knew whether it was successful. But according to the most comprehensive study of the program to date, its participants are slightly more likely to have savings and save significantly more money than low-income people who aren't in the program.

The report, which was conducted by the Urban Institute, comes at a time when some federal policymakers want to end the program and while states and localities are launching similar government-backed saving initiatives of their own.

Under the Assets for Independence (AFI) program, people who set aside some of their earnings on a regular basis get rewarded with a matching deposit from the government. It must be a minimum of $1 and a maximum of $8 for every $1 saved. Over time, the hope is that people can pay for things that will improve their lives, such as a car, home, college education or business.

Trump plan calls for nationwide concealed carry and an end to gun bans

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 01:38 PM PST

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump -- who said he has a concealed carry permit -- called for the expansion of gun rights Friday, including making those permits applicable nationwide.

In a position paper published on his website Friday afternoon, Trump called for the elimination of gun and magazine bans, labeling them a "total failure."

"Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own," Trump wrote.

It's not a departure from what he's said on the trail this year, though it does mark a shift from a position he took in his 2000 book "The America We Deserve," where Trump stated that he generally opposes gun control but that he supported a ban on assault weapons and a longer waiting period to get a gun.

How much money should you have saved by age 30?

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 01:30 PM PST

Just in case you're not already worried enough about the state of your finances, check out this well meaning but quietly devastating advice from finance expert Kelly Smith.

A writer for The Penny Hoarder, Smith told ATTN that by the time you're 30 you should have six months worth of expenses saved up.

"I think the goal at any age is to get to the point of having six months of living expenses saved up. Admittedly, it's harder in your twenties but it's a good time to start," Smith said.

Obviously "six months of expenses" is a relative concept, but given the average cost of living is estimated to be around $2,300 a month, that means you should have $13,800 in your bank account right now.

Polygamy remains a crime as U.S. Supreme Court won’t hear case from ‘Sister Wives’

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 01:00 PM PST

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear arguments from the husband and four wives who star in the television show "Sister Wives," letting stand a lower court ruling that kept polygamy a crime in Utah.

The appeal by Kody, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn Brown sought to remove the penalties for a practice that has caused consternation in Utah since the first Mormon settlers arrived. Some of the state's politically active polygamists vowed Monday morning to continue efforts to decriminalize plural marriage.

Salt Lake County's Darger family — husband Joe and wives Vicki, Valerie, and Alina — on Twitter turned their attention to trying to remove the criminal penalties through the political process.

Auto shop owner donates his $2.5M business to nonprofit

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 12:30 PM PST

BALTIMORE (AP) — Vehicles for Change, a pioneering Maryland nonprofit, has received foundation grants and corporate sponsorships, but no gift ever looked quite like this: a fully functioning auto repair business.

Jerry Greeff's unusual donation of his One Stop Auto Repair garage came with a request to keep alive the $2.5 million-a-year business that he has operated in Waverly with his wife, Pam, since 1991.

At 64, Greeff said his wife encouraged him to leave behind his taxing 12-hour days at the shop and concentrate instead on the family's commercial real estate interests.

"My wife said it was either her or the business," Greeff said.

The shop — on the site of the old Talbott Motors Co. that later became a Ford dealership on Greenmount Avenue — was transferred right after Christmas to the nonprofit, which fixes donated cars and awards them to low-income families at minimal cost.

All that was missing was a giant red bow.

Martin Schwartz, the organization's president, said he was happy to oblige Greeff's request. Not only will the 18-year-old nonprofit keep the shop — with its familiar red-brick storefront and 17 lifts — open, it will use the property as an extension of its re-entry program in Halethorpe, in which dozens of ex-prisoners are trained to become auto mechanics.

Salisbury Manufacturer Plans New Operation, 50 New Jobs

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 12:01 PM PST

Toroid Corp. Hiring for New Panel and Harness Division

ANNAPOLIS, MD –
Toroid Corporation, which manufactures electrical transformers and other power products, is expanding its presence in Wicomico County with the launch of a new division to produce wire harnesses, control panels and electrical box assemblies. The newly formed Toroid Panel & Harness, LLC (Toroid P & H) plans to hire 50 new employees over the next three years, including some workers who were displaced when the Labinal Power Systems' plant in Salisbury closed last year.

"The expansion was the result of both our strategic plan to diversify our products as well the presence of an experienced and skilled workforce on the Eastern Shore," said Toroid Corp. President Katarina Ennerfelt. "We are very grateful and excited about this opportunity and want to thank both the state of Maryland and Wicomico County for helping us make this possible."

Toroid P & H will invest at least $250,000 in the new site in Salisbury, where Toroid has leased 10,000 square-feet of space with assistance from the Maryland Department of Commerce and Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development. Founded in Sweden in 1978, Toroid opened a satellite production facility in Salisbury in 1988. The company built a factory in Salisbury in 1994 where it now employs 60 people.

"The launch of Toroid's new panel and harness division on the Eastern Shore is another shining example of Maryland's continuing progress and economic growth," said Governor Larry Hogan. "We commend their decision to expand their manufacturing operations in our state, and to invest in our highly-skilled workforce."

"Toroid has been a great partner for Wicomico County and for Maryland for more than two decades, and we're pleased to support their efforts to strengthen that relationship by assisting with the launch of their new division in Salisbury," said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. "Companies like Toroid are essential to the growth of manufacturing in Maryland."

To support the expansion, Commerce has approved a $100,000 conditional loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund (MEDAAF). Wicomico County has provided a separate $100,000 loan through the Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development Corporation. The company is also eligible for a number of state and local tax credits.

"Wicomico County thanks Toroid P & H, LLC for investing in our people and creating manufacturing jobs in our community," said County Executive Bob Culver. "We extend special appreciation to Governor Hogan and his team for collaborative efforts in assisting Toroid P & H."

"The principals of Toroid P & H are no strangers to Salisbury, having started several manufacturing businesses here. We thank them for their confidence and participation in growing our city and continuing the ascension of the Salisbury job market," said Salisbury Mayor Jake Day.

How one political outsider picked a cabinet

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 12:00 PM PST

Trump's efforts to fill the top jobs in his incoming administration bring to mind those of Dwight Eisenhower, who was the last person elected president without having earlier served in elective office.

The Ike cabinet was wealthy, too
Eisenhower, a moderately conservative Republican elected in November 1952, came to the White House from a career spent almost entirely in the military. His brief stint as president of Columbia University from 1948-50 was the one break with that pattern.

Like Donald Trump, Ike and many of his top aides had no previous experience in public office. Also like Trump, Eisenhower tended to be impressed by people who had risen to the top in realms other than politics. As a result, the senior ranks of the Eisenhower administration were filled with people who had achieved distinction in such fields as the military, business, law and education. Almost all of them were quite affluent.

Liberal Democrats responded by dismissing the Eisenhower cabinet as "eight millionaires and a plumber." "A plumber" was a reference to the new labor secretary, Martin Durkin, who had previously headed the Plumber's Union.

That put-down didn't faze Eisenhower. He felt government would be well served by successful men, who tend to be rich. If the leaders of successful businesses were excluded from consideration, he wrote in his diary, the result would be an inability "to get anybody to take jobs in Washington except business failures, political hacks and New Deal lawyers."

An Open Letter to the Neighbor who hates our Chicken Houses

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 11:30 AM PST

Growing up in a tight-knit agricultural community I assumed besides the occasional smell, our neighbors had no problems with our chicken houses. I have begun to see differently recently!

So to the Neighbor who Hates our Chicken Houses,
It would be very easy for me to be angry at you. I instantly feel hurt and anger and to be honest a bit of betrayal after the confrontation where you exposed your feelings about our farm. But instead of anger and hurt, I'm choosing grace and understanding and education.

I know that like with so many other agriculture commodities, you honestly just don't understand. You see, and smell, all the things that come with farming and raising animals specifically. You see us hauling off dead birds to be incinerated or composted. You smell liter as we clean out houses to prepare for a new flock of birds. You see feed trucks driving past your house at all hours of the day and night, and every couple of months you see semi trucks carrying birds back to the processing plant in the middle of the night. You see my dad leave for work early in the morning and get home at 4 and you think he doesn't have time to work and farm at the same time. You see all these things going on at our farm and then you see Facebook posts about how cruel "factory farming" is towards the animal and how we pump our birds full of antibiotics and hormones just to make a profit. You see that there are over 20 poultry farms in the miles surrounding your house and you take all the negatives and multiply them. You see all these things and you get a bad taste in your mouth for our farm.

Rosary Drowns Out Pro-Abortion Protests at Pro-Life Assembly

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 11:00 AM PST

BOSTON — When protesters tried to shout down the speakers at a pro-life rally commemorating the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on Sunday, they got an unusual response.

Mother Olga, the keynote speaker of the event, and Cindy Dorsey, the event's emcee, walked calmly to the podium, rosaries in hand, and led the assembly in prayer, their communal "Hail Mary's" drowning out the shouted profanities and chants for "abortion on demand."

Mother Olga, who was born in Iraq, and began her ministry to the poor and marginalized in the days of Saddam Hussein's regime, continued the event after the last of the protesters had been removed.

"I was born in a country ruled by a dictator," she told the gathered crowd. "I understand what it is like to live with few rights. But to have these rights, you must be born first. You must have the right to life."

As I approach my row I smile and motion to the husband and wife sitting in the aisle and middle seat that Imy seat was next to the window. Trump Warns "We Are Going To Be Imposing A Very Major Border Tax", Will "Cut Regulations By 75%"

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 09:45 AM PST

One look at the Dollar Index in the last week and it's clear just how 'variable' President Trump's position has been on trade and so-called 'border adjustments'. In the space of a few days, he has swung from being against a border adjustment, to possibly being for it, and now today confirming that "we are going to impose a major border tax." Yen, Peso, and Loonie are all sliding further on the headline.

Specifically, as the clips below show, Trump promised business leaders a "very major" border tax and said he would cut regulations by 75%. Trump held a breakfast meeting with the business leaders he named to an advisory panel on manufacturing, led by Andrew Liveris, chief executive officer of Dow Chemical Co. Other business leaders at the morning meeting with Trump included Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Inc.; Jeff Fettig, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corp.; Mark Fields, president and CEO of Ford Motor Co.; and Marillyn Hewson, chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Maryland State Police are on the hunt tonight. Not for suspects, but for new troopers.

Recruiting tools range from the internet to movie theaters.

The campaign has a dash of Hollywood, and it's a five-year, $100,000 effort.

"What we're trying to do is communicate a message of exciting careers with a purpose," says Major Dalaine Brady.

"So we are on Facebook, we are on YouTube, we have been in movie theaters."

The Collapse of the Left

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 09:23 AM PST

The Left is not just in disarray–it is in complete collapse because the working class has awakened to the Left's betrayal and abandonment of the working class in favor of building personal wealth and power.

The source of the angry angst rippling through the Democratic Party's progressive camp is not President Trump–it's the complete collapse of the Left globally. To understand this collapse, we turn (once again) to Marx's profound understanding of the state and capitalism.

We turn not to the cultural Marxism that is passingly familiar to Americans, but to Marx's core economic analysis, which as Sartre noted, is only taught to discredit it.

Cultural Marxism draws as much from Engels as Marx. In today's use, cultural Marxism describes the overt erosion of traditional values–the family, community, religious faith, property rights and limited central government–in favor of rootless Cosmopolitanism and an expansive, all-powerful central state that replaces community, faith and property rights with statist control mechanisms that enforce dependence on the state and a mindset that the individual is guilty of anti-state thinking until proven innocent by the state's own rules.

New York man charged with hiding woman's head in freezer

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 09:15 AM PST

A convicted sex offender has been arrested and charged with hiding a woman's head and other body part in his freezer after allegedly dumping other remains at a New York City waste-sorting station.

Somorie Moses, 40, was taken into custody at around 12.15am Sunday at his home in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, where investigators with the New York City Police Department executed a search and found a woman's head, hands and feet stuffed inside the freezer.

The grisly discovery was made just days after workers at the Metropolitan Transfer Station on Halleck Street in the Hunts Points section of The Bronx came upon a female torso and a leg without a foot in the trash.

AFL-CIO Praises President Trump’s Move to Withdraw from TPP

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 09:07 AM PST

AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka praised GOP President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Trans Pacific Partnership once and for all on Monday with an executive order officially killing the Pacific Rim trade deal.

Trumka also praised the decision by President Trump to reopen negotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) deal from the 1990s, a deal that saw millions of U.S. jobs leave the country for Mexico and Canada—and the labor union leader praised President Trump's harsh words for Big Pharma, the pharmaceutical industry, when Trumpsaid of that industry that "they're politically protected, but not anymore" in an interview with the Washington Post.

Trumka said in his Monday statement:

Last year, a powerful coalition of labor, environmental, consumer, public health and allied groups came together to stop the TPP. Today's announcement that the US is withdrawing from TPP and seeking a reopening of NAFTA is an important first step toward a trade policy that works for working people. While these are necessary actions, they aren't enough. They are just the first in a series of necessary policy changes required to build a fair and just global economy. We will continue our relentless campaign to create new trade and economic rules that end special privileges for foreign investors and Big Pharma, protect our planet's precious natural resources and ensure fair pay, safe conditions and a voice in the workplace for all workers."

Congressman Introduces Bill To Withdraw The U.S. From The United Nations

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 08:45 AM PST

A new bill has been introduced which would allow the United States to withdraw from the United Nations, and is now beginning to turns heads.

Representative Mike Rogers from Alabama introduced H.R. 193 American Sovereignty Act of 2017 in early January but is just now getting media exposure. The full bill can be seen here on congress.gov.

The bill repeals the United Nations Participation Act of 1945 and other specified related laws.

The bill requires: (1) the President to terminate U.S. membership in the United Nations (U.N.), including any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body; and (2) closure of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

The bill prohibits: (1) the authorization of funds for the U.S. assessed or voluntary contribution to the U.N., (2) the authorization of funds for any U.S. contribution to any U.N. military or peacekeeping operation, (3) the expenditure of funds to support the participation of U.S. Armed Forces as part of any U.N. military or peacekeeping operation, (4) U.S. Armed Forces from serving under U.N. command, and (5) diplomatic immunity for U.N. officers or employees.

Clearly, many people would be in favor of such a move and many would oppose it. Many who would support the move believe that the United Nations Agenda 30 is a blueprint for a unipolar world order with a destructive agenda, as Zerohedge reported last year.

Billionaire George Soros has ties to more than 50 ‘partners’ of the Women’s March on Washington

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 08:30 AM PST

In the pre-dawn darkness of today's presidential inauguration day, I faced a choice, as a lifelong liberal feminist who voted for Donald Trump for president: lace up my pink Nike sneakers to step forward and take the DC Metro into the nation's capital for the inauguration of America's new president, or wait and go tomorrow to the after-party, dubbed the "Women's March on Washington"?

The Guardian has touted the "Women's March on Washington" as a "spontaneous" action for women's rights. Another liberal media outlet, Vox, talks about the "huge, spontaneous groundswell" behind the march. On its website, organizers of the march are promoting their work as "a grassroots effort" with "independent" organizers. Even my local yoga studio, Beloved Yoga, is renting a bus and offering seats for $35. The march's manifesto says magnificently, "The Rise of the Woman = The Rise of the Nation."

It's an idea that I, a liberal feminist, would embrace. But I know — and most of America knows — that the organizers of the march haven't put into their manifesto: the march really isn't a "women's march." It's a march for women who are anti-Trump.

Soaring Lease Returns Set To Wreak Havoc Used Car Pricing and Auto Industry Profits

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 08:15 AM PST

For months we've warned that declining used car prices could spell disaster for subprime auto securitizations (see "Slumping Used Car Prices Spell Disaster For Subprime Auto Securitizations"). While it's always difficult to predict the exact timing of when bubbles will burst, a combination of record-high lease returns in 2017 and 2018, combined with rising interest rates could imply that the auto bubble is on the precipice.

As Bloomberg recently pointed out, strong used car pricing is a critical component required to prop up the overall auto market. While American's love their brand new cars, if used car prices become too soft then substitution can hurt new car sales. Add to that the impact of falling residual values on the finance arms of the auto OEMs and you have all the ingredients required for an auto market meltdown.

A glut of used vehicles has started to depress prices. That trend will intensify as Americans will return 3.36 million leased cars and trucks this year, another jump after a 33 percent surge in 2016, according to J.D. Power. The fallout has already begun, with Ford Motor Co. shaving $300 million from its financial-services arm's profit forecast for this year.

"Ford is the canary in the coal mine," said Maryann Keller, a former Wall Street analyst who's now an auto industry consultant in Stamford, Connecticut.

This drag may be hitting the rest of the industry, too. A National Automobile Dealers Association index of used-vehicle prices declined each of the last six months of last year. If used values weaken more than anticipated, it can lead to losses across the industry, hitting carmakers, auto lenders and rental companies.

A Comment Worthy Of A Post 1-24-17

The march was about a lot more than women's rights. If you are lucky enough to not feel like a second class citizen, or if you've never felt in danger or worried because of your gender, you're very privileged. Thousands of women in this country are still in situations where they don't have the right to go out and get a job, where they can't get access to the support they need, be it emotional, mental, or healthcare-related. There is the wage gap, the rape culture issues, and plenty of other women's issues that I, as a white man, can't even articulate because I've never and will never know what it's like to be a woman in this country.

However, it was also about LGBTQ+ rights, standing up against Islamaphobia, and there was a presence of many other groups, including anti-abortion, pro-choice, Black Lives Matter, immigration, and other rights groups.

The aim, basically, is to show solidarity with women (and men) the world over. That's why there were sister marches in countries all over the world (even in places like Cambodia, where they're technically not even allowed to protest). It was as much pro-women and pro-equality as it was anti-Trump/etc.

For some women, that time of the month can be so bad it triggers a complete emotional meltdown.

But those who suffer severe forms of premenstrual syndrome may be suffering from more than raging hormones – their symptoms could be caused by a parasite carried by cats, research suggests.

Scientists found women with extreme symptoms such as depression and anger are more likely than others to have the parasite in their bloodstream.

Gun-Controlled Chicago: Shootings, Murder Higher than this Time Last Year

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 07:45 AM PST

The number of shootings and murders January 1 through January 22, 2017, are higher than they were for the same time period in 2016.

According to the Chicago Tribune, "at least 228 people were shot in Chicago so far this year." That is an increase of 16 victims over the number shot by this same time in 2016. And there have been "at least 42 homicides," marking a "23.5 percent from the 34 homicides from the same period in 2016."

Think about it this way–January 2016 was the bloodiest start for a year in at least 16 years, yet the carnage of the first three weeks of 2017 surpassed it. And this is bad omen, especially when you consider the fact that bloody January 2016 set the tone for the rest of last year, with the result that gun-controlled Chicago ended 2016 with nearly 4,400 shootings and almost 800 murders.

'We're Going To Have To Rethink Our Relationship Here' Kellyanne Dumps NBC Anchor For Spreading Lies

Kellyanne Conway and NBC's Chuck Todd got into an intense and dramatic spat that could lead to a rethinking of their 'relationship'. Chuck Todd claimed that Sean Spencer was lying when he said Trump's crowds were bigger than Obama's at the inauguration.

"Let me begin with this question, the presidency is about choices. So I'm curious why President Trump chose yesterday to send out his press secretary to essentially litigate a provable falsehood when it comes to a small and petty thing like inaugural crowd size. I guess my question to you is why do that?" asked Chuck Todd.

"I'm about things that are quantifiable and important. I don't think that– I don't think ultimately presidents are judged by crowd sizes at their inauguration. I think they're judged by their accomplishments," explained Kellyanne.

Chuck Todd kept pushing, getting angrier and angrier as he went until Kellyanne finally had enough. "Chuck, I mean, if we're going to keep referring to our press secretary in those types of terms I think that we're going to have to rethink our relationship here. I want to have a great open relationship with our press. But look what happened the day before talking about falsehoods," said Kellyanne.

"We allowed the press– the press to come into the Oval Office and witness President Trump signing executive orders. And of course, you know, the Senate had just confirmed General Mattis and General Kelly to their two posts. And we allowed the press in. And what happens almost immediately? A falsehood is told about removing the bust of Martin Luther King Junior from the Oval Office. No, that's just flat out false," said Kellyanne. Bam! Check out the full interview below.

It's now cold and flu season, which means this is the time of year when Marylanders wonder what they are going to do if they get sick.

March for Life (Washington, D.C.) - Wikipedia

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 07:15 AM PST

I'm publishing this because I want to make a serious point here. This is not a once every four year Presidential event. It's not a one time million man march. What ticks me off about the Main Stream Media is the FACT that they give this event very little attention and rarely ever mention attendance. The mere fact that has been going on for some 30 years straight and the attendance is as high as it is, it deserves far more attention. The 2017 event takes place this weekend.

From 2003 to 2009, the March for Life brought in around 250,000 attendees each year. However, the events of the past few years have drawn in more people, with 2011's event bringing in up to 400,000 protestors. The 2013 March for Life drew an estimated 650,000 people. However, NPR reported the attendees numbering in the 'Tens of thousands'. Additionally, as of 1/23/2017, the March for Life Facebook page has less than 100,000 'likes' worldwide, significantly less than the purported number of attendees at the US event. March for Life organizers have not disclosed their methodology in calculating the number of attendees.

Approximately 5,000 participated in the 14th annual march in 1987, despite a snowstorm. Many teenagers and college students attend the march each year, typically traveling with church/youth groups. Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney estimated that about half of the marchers are under age 30.

Famed snake trackers from India latest weapon in Florida war on pythons

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 07:00 AM PST

What Judas snakes, snake-sniffing dogs and even hunters from around the globe have struggled to accomplish may finally be pulled off by a pair of singing snake catchers from India: solving the riddle for finding Burmese pythons in Florida's Everglades.

In just two weeks this month, the two tribesmen from Southern India, working with the University of Florida, caught 14 pythons. That included a monster 16-foot female holed up in the ruins of the old Nike missile base on Key Largo.

Since arriving in early January, Masi Sadaiyan and Vadivel Gopal, both in their 50s and members of the Irula tribe, India's famed snake hunters, have headed into the Everglades almost daily. Armed only with tire irons to punch through dense burma reed and sharp limestone rock and trailed by biologists, the pair are on the lookout for the sparkle of snakeskin in the bush. They're also searching for what the snakes left behind: a ripple in the sand, a tunnel through grass or scat.

All these signs can alert them to the presence of the snake, the malai pambu, a snake far bigger than any the men have encountered in India.

DHS rushing faulty citizenship system that could miss ‘national security threats’

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:53 AM PST

The government's new system that grants citizenship has "alarming" security breaches, including allowing immigrants to be approved without a full FBI background check, the Homeland Security inspector general said Monday in an "urgent" warning telling the government to put everything on hold.

Inspector General John Roth said he got wind that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services was about to take the troubled system online later this month, and said he was compelled to issue the extraordinary alert to try to prevent a massive mistake.

He said that as of Jan. 11, about 175 citizenship applications were approved despite never having completed the background checks.

"Without sufficient vetting, immigrants could potentially be granted U.S. citizenship although they are ineligible or pose national security threats," Mr. Roth said in his alert.

Organisms created with synthetic DNA pave way for entirely new life forms

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:45 AM PST

From the moment life gained a foothold on Earth its story has been written in a DNA code of four letters. With G, T, C and A - the molecules that pair up in the DNA helix - the lines between humans and all life on Earth are spelled out.

Now, the first living organisms to thrive with an expanded genetic code have been made by researchers in work that paves the way for the creation and exploitation of entirely new life forms.

Scientists in the US modified common E coli microbes to carry a beefed-up payload of genetic material which, they say, will ultimately allow them to program how the organisms operate and behave.

The work is aimed at making bugs that churn out new kinds of proteins which can be harvested and turned into drugs to treat a range of diseases. But the same technology could also lead to new kinds of materials, the researchers say.

In a report published on Monday, the scientists describe the modified microbes as a starting point for efforts to "create organisms with wholly unnatural attributes and traits not found elsewhere in nature."

"Nobody called me and said, 'hey, can we have a dialog.'"

Lawsuit filed against police in DC after Inauguration Day arrests

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:30 AM PST

WASHINGTON — A class-action lawsuit has been filed against D.C. police and U.S. Park Police for arrests made during the Inauguration Day riots.

The suit centers on an incident that occurred at 12th and L streets northwest in downtown D.C., where police allegedly surrounded a group of individuals after rioters began causing property damage and throwing items at police.

D.C. attorney Jeffrey Light filed the suit on behalf of a Colorado attorney, who was in the group that was allegedly kettled in. Light said among those rounded up were reporters, legal observers and medics who didn't break the law.

"What they [the police] can't do is round up everybody who was there and indiscriminately arrest everybody who happened to be on the block," Light said. People in the group were detained for hours and were subjected to excessive use of force by police, which included the use of pepper spray and batons, according to Light.

Indiana state senator under fire for 'fat women' post

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:23 AM PST

Indiana Sen. Jack E. Sandlin is facing a social media backlash for a Facebook post that called the masses gathered for last weekend's Women's March "fat women out walking."

Sandlin, a Republican, took down the message but not before screenshots had been widely shared on Facebook and Twitter.

The post appeared Sunday and showed a photo of protesters, many in pink hats and carrying signs, with the words "In one day Trump got more fat women out walking than Michelle Obama did in 8 years." — referencing the former First Lady's campaign against obesity. An estimated 4,500 people in Indianapolis and an estimated 500,000 in Washington, D.C. participated in marches over the weekend.

Supporters guard veterans memorial after city pulls cross

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:15 AM PST

A veterans memorial in Minnesota lost one cross but gained more than a dozen others -- and a security detail -- over the weekend after supporters argued that the city caved to the Freedom from Religion Foundation.

The memorial at Belle Plaine Veterans Memorial Park showed a silhouette of a soldier kneeling in front of a cross that served as a headstone for a fellow soldier's grave, Fox 9 reported. Workers installed it last summer, but opponents were quick to argue that it violated the separation of church and state because it appeared on public property.

The city and its veterans club reportedly agreed to get rid of the cross last week. Still, supporters of veterans said they were outraged.

That puts him behind Richard Nixon, who resigned, and George W. Bush, who saw his approval rating drop as low as 25 percent near the end of his term.

It puts him ahead of only Gerald Ford (47.2 percent), Jimmy Carter (45.5 percent) and Harry Truman (45.4 percent).

Gallup, in an analysis released Friday, published the average approval rating for all twelve presidents who have served since World War II.

Obama Was First President to Spend More on Welfare Than Defense

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:00 AM PST

Barack Obama was the first president of the United States to spend more on "means-tested entitlements"—AKA welfare—than on national defense, according to data published by his own Office of Management and Budget.

Historical tables that the OMB posted on the Obama White House website, include annual totals for both "national defense" spending and "means-tested entitlement" spending going back to fiscal 1962--which is three years before President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation creating the Medicaid program, a means-tested entitlement that together with the Children's Health Insurance Program enrolled 74,407,191 beneficiaries as of November 2016.

In every year from fiscal 1962 through fiscal 2014, total national defense spending exceeded means-tested entitlement spending.

Are terrorists crossing the US-Mexico border? Excerpts from the case file.

The idea of terrorists using the frontier to gain access to the US is not merely hypothetical.

There have been no terror attacks in the US homeland linked to the Mexico border, but the idea of terrorists using the frontier to gain access to the US is not merely hypothetical.

For the past eight years there has been a running debate between conservatives and liberals over the potential threat of terrorists using the US-Mexico border to enter or attack America.

The Obama administration has largely played down the threat, while conservative critics have issued a steady drumbeat of warnings.

Although there have been no terror attacks in the American homeland linked to the US-Mexico border, the threat of terrorists using the border to gain access to the US is not merely hypothetical.

What follows are 10 examples from criminal cases that highlight the issue of terrorism and the US-Mexico border.

Hypocrisy At Its Finest

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 03:00 AM PST

Here are some observations from the march.

First, while their behavior was nonviolent (there were no arrests), some of the signs and T-shirts these women wore were putrid and vulgar. "This bitch bites." "Pussy Power." "Nasty Women Make A Difference." "I Have a Vagina and I Vote." "Good Women Never Change History." (Tell that to Rosa Parks.) "Dykes Against Trump." And other such niceties.

I even saw young girls, high school age and younger, accompanied by their parents with these disgusting signs.

Do these women understand that the B word and the C word and the D word and the P word are terms men use in the locker room to disparage and objectify women? Do they want these terms to become part of polite company? Women were outraged — rightly so — when Trump used these disgraceful words. Now they retaliate against him by using the same language?

Prime Minister Viktor Orban is interpreting Trump's statement as "the end of multilateralism" and as permission for Hungary to also put itself in first place.

Orban was an early supporter of Trump and had praised his immigration policies.

Who I Am As A Woman

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 05:00 AM PST

"I am not a "disgrace to women" because I don't support the women's march. I do not feel I am a "second class citizen" because I am a woman. I do not feel my voice is "not heard" because I am a woman. I do not feel I am not provided opportunities in this life or in America because I am a woman. I do not feel that I "don't have control of my body or choices" because I am a woman. I do not feel like I am " not respected or undermined" because I am a woman.
I AM a woman.
I can make my own choices.
I can speak and be heard.
I can VOTE.
I can work.
I control my body.
I can defend myself.
I can defend my family.
There is nothing stopping me to do anything in this world but MYSELF.
I do not blame my circumstances or problems on anything other than my own choices or even that sometimes in life, we don't always get what we want. I take responsibility for myself.
I am a daughter, a sister, a friend. I am not held back in life but only by the walls I choose to not go over which is a personal choice.
Quit blaming.
Take responsibility.
If you want to speak, do so. But do not expect for me, a woman, to take you seriously wearing a pink va-jay-jay hat on your head and screaming profanities and bashing men.
If you have beliefs, and speak to me in a kind manner, I will listen. But do not expect for me to change my beliefs to suit yours. Respect goes both ways.
If you want to impress me, especially in regards to women, then speak on the real injustices and tragedies that affect women in foreign countries that do not have the opportunity or means to have their voices heard.
Saudi Arabia, women can't drive, no rights and must always be covered.
China and India, infantcide of baby girls.
Afghanistan, unequal education rights.
Democratic Republic of Congo, where rapes are brutal and women are left to die, or HIV infected and left to care for children alone.
Mali, where women can not escape the torture of genital mutilation.
Pakistan, in tribal areas where women are gang raped to pay for men's crime.
Guatemala, the impoverished female underclass of Guatemala faces domestic violence, rape and the second-highest rate of HIV/AIDS after sub-Saharan Africa. An epidemic of gruesome unsolved murders has left hundreds of women dead, some of their bodies left with hate messages.
And that's just a few examples.
So when women get together in AMERICA and whine they don't have equal rights and march in their clean clothes, after eating a hearty breakfast, and it's like a vacation away that they have paid for to get there...
This WOMAN does not support it.

Trump’s Inaugural Address Was Like No Other in History

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 04:00 AM PST

He is rich enough, and independent enough, and cantankerous enough that he may not get stuck in the swamps of political compromise.

Donald Trump's inaugural address is going to go down in history as one of the great ones.

I say this as a man with 59 years of public speaking experience and a Ph.D. in American history.

There have only been three inaugural addresses that have come down through the ages. The first was Lincoln's second inaugural, with the phrase: ". . . with malice towards none, with charity for all." The second was Franklin Roosevelt's first inaugural: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." The third was John Kennedy's: "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." These are legendary phrases.

But Trump's speech was different from any previous inaugural address. He spoke directly to his political base. He did not try to pull the country together in some kind of vague, pie-in-the-sky, common-ground political rhetoric. He threw down the gauntlet from the very beginning. Standing in front of the Capitol building, surrounded by former Presidents and politicians, he said that everything they had done in the past has been a way to extract power from the American people and to feather their own nests. This, of course, is exactly what they have done. Nobody had ever said this before in an inaugural address.

He made it clear that this is a turning point. Again, always in the past inaugural addresses have called for unity. He did not call for unity in general. He called for unity on his terms, governed by his agenda. He called for the transfer of power from the halls of Washington back to the people. The rhetoric was confrontational to a degree that I would not have expected.

A Message From Martin O'Malley

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 03:00 AM PST

I want to personally thank you for coming to the Women's March on Washington in DC, attending a Sister March, donating to support the cause, or joining in solidarity. Whether we connected or not in the tremendous crowd, we were all there together.

I hope this weekend was a hugely empowering experience for you as it was for me and my family. After all, democracies don't take their cues from top-down; democracies respond to the masses. And if President Trump thinks he can shred our health care or discriminate against our fellow citizens, he will find even bigger crowds marching on Washington.

Keep hope alive.

U.S. DOT Rule Prohibits Use of Cell Phones by Commercial Drivers

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 02:00 AM PST

Final rule will hit violators with $2,750 fine after taking effect on Jan. 3

Starting on Jan. 3, drivers of commercial vehicles will face fines of $2,750 for using their cell phones while driving, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced. The final rule, which officially prohibits interstate truck drivers from using cell phones during the operation of their vehicles, comes from both the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) divisions and is the latest attempt by the DOT to end distracted driving.

The rule encompasses both truck and bus drivers and, along with individual drivers, will punish companies that allow drivers to use cell phones while driving with a maximum fine of $11,000. States also have the ability to suspend a driver's commercial driver's license after two or more violations.

"This final rule represents a giant leap for safety," said FMCSA administrator Anne S. Ferro. "It's just too dangerous for drivers to use a hand-held cell phone while operating a commercial vehicle. Drivers must keep their eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and head in the game when operating on our roads."

This is one of many rules regarding the use of cell phones by commercial vehicle drivers passed by the DOT and its divisions over the past eighteen months. In September 2010, the FMCSA issued a regulation banning commercial vehicle drivers from text messaging while operating their vehicles. Last February, PHMSA announced a similar regulation which banned text messaging by intrastate hazardous materials drivers.

"When drivers of large trucks, buses, and hazardous materials take their eyes off the road for even a few seconds, the outcome can be deadly," said DOT secretary Ray LaHood. "I hope that this rule will save lives by helping commercial drivers stay laser-focused on safety at all times while behind the wheel."
