Should Johnny Really Go To College? Posted: 05 Jun 2016 07:43 AM PDT By Thornton Crowe Little story. A few years ago, I needed an electrician to fix a faulty outside electrical socket after a hard rain. After much calling around (even to my neighbor who is an electrician,) I found getting this simple 10 minute task would have to wait for three weeks to get done. Finally, I found Mr. Bradshaw. He came over and fixed the socket, (bringing parts with so no down time)! Calling around was the biggest investment of my time that day -- over two hours of answering machines and Suzy automation. Sadly, Mr. Bradshaw passed away in 2013. Now what? If you're a homeowner, you know finding people skilled in plumbing and electricity is very hard - especially on the Eastern Shore -- and quite expensive. While Bradshaw was very reasonable, the plumber I use charges me a king's ransom every time he comes to my house, regardless the issue. So why am I bothering you on a Sunday morning with this story? As the title says, "should Johnny really go to college?" All this talk about free college education is absolutely absurd. While this will no doubtfully get me chastised, I must state: Not all people are meant for a collegiate experience. Oh, sure, we'd all love to think our little Bobs and Sues are college bound and smarter than Einstein, but let's get real here. Not all people possess the mentality for academia. Unfortunately, now, we have TOO many people in college, wasting space (like the black girls that did the lynching 'artwork' at Blackwell a month or so back.) Yet trade skills are dwindling. Not many people get out of high school and hold dreams of being a plumber or electrician - yet, we NEED them more than we need paper/pencil pushing brainiacs behind a desk in some fancy, schmaltzy office. In reality, the last thing we really need on the Eastern Shore is one MORE lawyer when we have an over-abundance of them now! All the young ones want to be corporate raiders but in reality, we desperately need more skilled labor in our workforce. This reigns true particularly for small areas like Salisbury, where there needs to be a healthy competition to keep prices reasonable. As you can see from my handy graph for your visual cortex, many don't finish college (showing a lack of commitment to a task for some employers) and so why discourage them from attending a trade school - even while in high school? Nothing says more about accomplishment than a new house with excellent wiring and plumbing or a car rebuilt by a skilled mechanic! And let us not forget, while you take it for granted more times than not, your life would be very bland with a city full of white houses. Professional house painters make it possible for you to have a beautiful home - as with landscapers. Highly skilled bricklayers are an asset to any community! While we hear Bernie's crowd feeling the free college, we have to wonder what that means. A few months back, I challenged this pseudo intellectualism about Socialism but many were more concerned about whether or not I'd ever lived in London rather than the point I was illustrating. So here's the fact: In England, one must TEST and pass successfully in order to get into free college. Furthermore, the profession you choose may not be the profession the government needs; therefore, you can go to college but you'll have to be what the government thinks is a good fit for you! If you want to be a doctor, but you test as an accountant, you can pursue medicine on your own dime. If you want to crunch beans, you'll get educated for free. Actually, if we go by way of England, our trade market would increase because people testing in the trades would increase! College would be barred for those people testing high in the skilled trade areas. Regardless of whether or not we go free in this country, the premise of testing still should be implemented. Trade schools should be a viable option because there's nothing wrong with being in the trades. In fact, plumbers have notoriously been considered as a 'rich' trade. So you don't have to worry that your babies will grow up paupers just because they know plumbing rather than Shakespeare. See my point? To be honest with you, if I were in my twenties again, I'd study a trade rather than going to college. One can always pursue academics at another time of their life after they've made their bank; but very few can go crawling about under a house at sixty-something without much physical pain! How say you...

Gorilla killed after 4-year-old falls into zoo enclosure Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT A holiday weekend outing at Cincinnati's zoo turned doubly tragic Saturday when a 4-year-old boy was hospitalized after falling into a gorilla enclosure - and zoo workers had to kill the rare gorilla to protect the boy. Cincinnati police and emergency crews responded to a report of a child falling into the exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden at about 4 p.m. Saturday. Police confirmed the child was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center near the zoo, and was treated for serious injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. Cincinnati Zoo President Thane Maynard said the boy crawled through a barrier and fell an estimated 10 to 12 feet into the moat surrounding the habitat. He said the boy was not seriously injured by the fall. More

Memorial Day: More Than Just A Three-Day Weekend Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT
A holiday to celebrate our victories and losses but also one to reflect on just what America means to us... In our times of high political correctness, it is not an outrageous thing to entertain, given Obama's 'almost' apology for Hiroshima speech, will our holidays honoring military become extinct? It is surprising that over the last seven years, this hasn't been entertained or discussed. Given the current president and his strong dislike for the founding values of America, it is quite surprising he hasn't tried to outlaw our cherished holidays like Memorial Day, which honors our soldiers whom have given their lives so we can continue to be a free nation.
This weekend, more so than probably any other year before, our military's history and sacrifice should be remembered and honored because without them, we would not be free. Additionally, in this pivotal election year, it's a time to reflect on a pertinent question regarding our country's tenuous future: Isn't it time we elected people who possess respect for those who have served and protected us rather than damning and apologizing for it? The choice is yours. How say you?
To my ancestors and all the men and women who fought, served and continue to serve in our armed forces to keep us free, I Thank You for your Service.

Local Liberal Chuck Cook Attempts To Attack Me On Facebook Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT Chuck Cook 4 hrs · "For some time now, I've felt like Trump had a "local" theme about him, and then it hit me: He's Joe Albero with money." Let's take a look at my background. Every property/vehicle I own is debt free, (no mortgage). I retired at 40 years old. I am not dependent on the government. While I have never claimed to be a billionaire, clearly the "American Dream" has a completely different meaning to Chuck Cook. While you meant your statement to be an insult, I am honored to be placed into Donald Trump's league. I guess, (in Chuck's eyes) everyone should be dependent on the government and shame on anyone who works hard, builds a business, pays off all debts and for that deserves to be attacked.
Route 50 To Get New Traffic Light At Sixty Foot Road Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT BERLIN — To enhance safety, the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) will install a new traffic signal at the US 50 and Sixty Foot Road intersection, in eastern Wicomico County, just west of MD 354 (Powellville Road). In response to requests from the local community, SHA studied the intersection to determine if a signal or other changes would enhance safety. SHA traffic engineers analyzed a variety of factors including sight distance, pedestrian activity, crash history, proximity to schools, daily traffic counts, turning movements, physical geometry of the intersection and seasonal impacts. SHA engineers determined that a signal, along with turn lanes and additional signs, will improve traffic flow and safety through the intersection. SHA announced the decision at a meeting with local elected officials and citizens at the Pittsville Fire Department last night. More

Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT The federal government is suing to stop the family of San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook from collecting more than $250,000 in life insurance payments from his death. In a complaint seeking the seizure of the money Tuesday, the government alleges that the proceeds from Farook's two policies are derived from a terrorist act. "Terrorists must not be permitted to provide for their designated beneficiaries through their crimes," said U.S. Atty. Eileen Decker in a statement. "My office intends to explore every legal option available to us to ensure these funds are made available to the victims of this horrific crime. We will continue to use every tool available to seek justice on behalf of the victims of the San Bernardino terrorist attacks." More
A Letter To The Editor: At risk 14 y.o. Girl Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT My name is Robert Bacon and I have assumed temporary guardianship of a 14 year old girl who has not attended school in Wicomico county for almost a year and a half. She was living with her mother along with 4 other adults in a motel room and all the adults seem to have substance abuse problems. I live with her aunt who received her call for help. The child has told me she reached her breaking point when she gave up the bed provided by her mother to the only working adult in the room and was sleeping on the floor to allow this person a bed to sleep in. She said she was woke up around 3 am when someone spilled a full beer on her head and soaked her and her pillow. She said she was crying when she had to shower the alcohol off of her. Her aunt (my girlfriend) and I have taken her into our home and are providing a safe place for her to prosper. Her mother has granted us temporary guardianship and we have been trying to get her back to school. She does not wish to go back to school claiming some violence and harassment issues against her in the Wicomico County school she was attending. Her aunt and I are doing everything we can to get this child the education she needs. We have enroll her in home schooling .The child's father will be getting out of Wicomico County detention center for actions with his own substance abuse problems She is tired of his actions as well. He has been in jail a lot of times times and he has many pages on Maryland case search. The child`s comment on his release is "great, another homecoming, one more person to tell me what to do." I am so proud of this girl and her willingness to do right even under these conditions. She is trying above and beyond what I ever expected. The tough guy I sometimes feel I am has cried many times over this. As a recovering alcoholic myself, I have empathy for this child. I am upset over the fact that Wicomico County schools has allowed this child to be out of school for so long. Her aunt contacted the school and was told the child needed counseling but offered no assistance in the matter. It seems the Board has turned a blind eye to the situations of violence and harassment in the district, refusing to correct the problems and not offering help needed to children that have been affected by it. I am seeking help and advice in this matter and am sending this to many people.
Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT After some consideration, Roads have decided to close Quantico Creek Road today and tomorrow for a period of the day.... This will allow us to hopefully get this project, for the most part, finished by the weekend. Because of the width of the road, flagging operations will not only be less safe, but will not allow for continuous work. We will be closing it between 9:00 am and open it back up by 3:00 pm. This will allow school buses and work commute to get through unaffected. Again, thank you for your tolerance of this situation.

Blind Man Sues McDonald's for Refusing Him Drive-Thru Service Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT McDonald's has until mid-June to respond to a federal lawsuit accusing it of discrimination for refusing to serve blind customers who walk up during late-night hours when only the drive-thru window is open. The plaintiff, Scott Magee of Metairie, Louisiana, said in court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago that he was laughed at and turned away from the drive-thru window at a McDonald's in the New Orleans suburb late at night last August. It wasn't the first time that had happened, Magee alleged. Many McDonald's restaurants nationwide continue service through their drive-thru windows late at night after the main restaurant entrance has closed But the company's policy is not to serve pedestrians at the drive-thru, and blind customers can't drive, so they're effectively barred from patronizing the world's largest fast food chain by revenue, according to the suit, which seeks class-action status for all blind Americans who may have had difficulty ordering at McDonald's. Obama Proclamation: June LGBT Pride Month Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2016 - - - - - - - BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION Since our founding, America has advanced on an unending path toward becoming a more perfect Union. This journey, led by forward-thinking individuals who have set their sights on reaching for a brighter tomorrow, has never been easy or smooth. The fight for dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people is reflected in the tireless dedication of advocates and allies who strive to forge a more inclusive society. They have spurred sweeping progress by changing hearts and minds and by demanding equal treatment -- under our laws, from our courts, and in our politics. This month, we recognize all they have done to bring us to this point, and we recommit to bending the arc of our Nation toward justice. Last year's landmark Supreme Court decision guaranteeing marriage equality in all 50 States was a historic victory for LGBT Americans, ensuring dignity for same-sex couples and greater equality across State lines. For every partnership that was not previously recognized under the law and for every American who was denied their basic civil rights, this monumental ruling instilled newfound hope, affirming the belief that we are all more free when we are treated as equals. LGBT individuals deserve to know their country stands beside them. That is why my Administration is striving to better understand the needs of LGBT adults and to provide affordable, welcoming, and supportive housing to aging LGBT Americans. It is also why we oppose subjecting minors to the harmful practice of conversion therapy, and why we are continuing to promote equality and foster safe and supportive learning environments for all students. We remain committed to addressing health disparities in the LGBT community -- gay and bisexual men and transgender women of color are at a particularly high risk for HIV, and we have worked to strengthen our National HIV/AIDS Strategy to reduce new infections, increase access to care, and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV. Despite the extraordinary progress of the past few years, LGBT Americans still face discrimination simply for being who they are. I signed an Executive Order in 2014 that prohibits discrimination against Federal employees and contractors on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. I urge the Congress to enact legislation that builds upon the progress we have made, because no one should live in fear of losing their job simply because of who they are or who they love. And our commitment to combatting discrimination against the LGBT community does not stop at our borders: Advancing the fair treatment of all people has long been a cornerstone of American diplomacy, and we have made defending and promoting the human rights of LGBT individuals a priority in our engagement across the globe. In line with America's commitment to the notion that all people should be treated fairly and with respect, champions of this cause at home and abroad are upholding the simple truth that LGBT rights are human rights. There remains much work to do to extend the promise of our country to every American, but because of the acts of courage of the millions who came out and spoke out to demand justice and of those who quietly toiled and pushed for progress, our Nation has made great strides in recognizing what these brave individuals long knew to be true in their hearts -- that love is love and that no person should be judged by anything but the content of their character. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, as Americans wave their flags of pride high and march boldly forward in parades and demonstrations, let us celebrate how far we have come and reaffirm our steadfast belief in the equal dignity of all Americans. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2016 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fortieth. Black Outrage Over Gorilla Shot To Protect ‘White Privilege’. Just One Problem… Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT Do you feel strongly about Harambe, the hapless gorilla executed by Cincinnati zoo to protect the life of the four-year old child Isaiah whose stupid, irresponsible parents allowed him to crawl into the gorilla's pen? Well I do too. Especially when you realise – at least by some accounts – that the gorilla was actually trying to protect the child not kill it. But I don't think in the outrage stakes any of us can quite compete with the angry black people in social media forums who have been blaming the incident on entrenched white privilege. Caroline County Man Charged with Animal Cruelty Posted: 05 Jun 2016 05:00 AM PDT
Mervyn Jay Downes III, 21, of Ridgely, turned himself in late Friday night after officers searched his home and found evidence linking him to the two crimes earlier this spring. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Caroline District Court on July 5. On April 8, officers were called to the Adkins Arboretum in Tuckahoe State Park after two goats were found dead, their throats slit. On May 2, officers returned to the arboretum after another goat had been attacked, but survived the stabbing. Evidence collected at the scene eventually led investigators to Downes, who lives on a road abutting the park. In addition to the animal cruelty charges, Downes also was charged with three counts of malicious destruction of property, two counts of destroying an animal in a state park, two counts of having a weapon in a state park, two counts each of trespassing and being in a state park after hours. Officers also seized several weapons from his home. Downes was charged last December with multiple counts of illegal deer hunting and pleaded guilty in Queen Anne's District Court to one charge. He was given probation before judgment and fined $1,500, all of it suspended. He is on probation until Sept. 3. The maximum sentence for aggravated cruelty to animals is three years in prison and a fine of $5,000.

Students seeking sugar daddies for tuition, rent Posted: 05 Jun 2016 04:59 AM PDT Candice Kashani graduated from law school debt-free this spring, thanks to a modern twist on an age-old arrangement. During her first year, she faced tuition and expenses that ran nearly $50,000, even after a scholarship. So she decided to check out a dating website that connected women looking for financial help with men willing to provide it, in exchange for companionship and sex — a "sugar daddy" relationship as they are known. Now, almost three years and several sugar daddies later, Kashani is set to graduate from Villanova University free and clear, while some of her peers are burdened with six-digit debts. As the cost of tuition and rent rises, so does the apparent popularity of such sites among students. But are they really providing financial relief, or signing women up for something more exploitative and dangerous than debt? Kashani believes such sites are a "great resource" for young women, but others say these arrangements smack of prostitution and take advantage of women in a vulnerable situation. More |
