Acting ICE director calls out jurisdictions with sanctuary policies for threatening public safety

WASHINGTON — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Matthew T. Albence held a White House press briefing Thursday to explain how sanctuary policies threaten public safety and called on the public to hold their local lawmakers accountable. The briefing made clear that local jurisdictions across the U.S. that refuse to cooperate with ICE are complicit in the crimes committed by aliens who ICE could have otherwise been arrested and removed.
Under federal law, ICE has the authority to lodge immigration detainers with law enforcement partners who have custody of individuals arrested on criminal charges and who ICE has probable cause to believe are removable aliens. The detainer form asks the other law enforcement agency to notify ICE in advance of release and to maintain custody of the alien for a brief period so that ICE can take custody of that person in a safe and secure setting upon release from that agency's custody. Across the United States, several jurisdictions refuse to honor detainers and instead choose to willingly release criminal offenders back into their local communities where they are free to offend.
Acting Director Albence made clear that state and local jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement not only betray their duty to protect public safety, but force ICE to be more visible in those areas.

"As law enforcement professionals, it is frustrating to see senseless acts of violence and other criminal activity happen in our communities, knowing ICE could have prevented them with just a little cooperation," said Albence. "To the public, who want to live and raise your families in safe neighborhoods, we ask you to hold your lawmakers accountable before you, or someone you love, is unnecessarily victimized by a criminal ICE could have removed from the country."
Below are some examples of the risks posed by laws and policies restricting cooperation with ICE:
  • In September 2019, ICE officers arrested Jose Alejandro Lopez-Gutierrez, 56, in Colorado. Lopez-Gutierrez, a Mexican national, was arrested and booked into the Boulder County (CO) Jail after an arrest for felony sex assault on a child. ICE lodged a detainer on Lopez-Gutierrez in May 2019, but the Boulder County Jail released him from custody three days later without notifying ICE. He has previously been removed on one prior occasion.
  • In January 2019, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office (NC) arrested Angel Diaz-Vera, 40, a Mexican national, for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). ICE lodged a detainer, but he was released from local custody. In June 2019, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office again arrested Diaz-Vera for two counts of assault on a female, assault by strangulation, assault with a deadly weapon, and DWI. He again was released from Mecklenburg County despite ICE issuing another detainer and remains at large.
  • In September 2017, Jose Ramirez-Soto, 43, of Mexico, was arrested and booked into King County Jail (Washington) for child molestation charges. In 2018, he was convicted on a sexual assault charge (4th degree). ICE lodged a detainer, but Ramirez-Soto was released. Ramirez-Soto was again arrested and booked in the King County Jail in July 2019 for harassment and threats to kill. ICE again lodged a detainer, but he was released and remains at-large. He has been previously removed from the United States twice.
  • In July 2019, the Washington County Sheriff's Office (OR) arrested Alejandro Maldonado-Hernandez, 30, of Mexico, for manslaughter, assault and reckless driving. ICE lodged a detainer with the Washington County Jail, but he was released in August 2019 and remains at-large.
While ICE conducts daily at-large arrests of criminal aliens, this week, officers also focused on people who had been released from uncooperative jurisdictions. Of the nearly 1,300 at-large arrests made this week, ICE officers apprehended 199 people who could have been arrested at a jail if the agency's detainers had been honored. Of all the aliens taken into custody:
  • three (3) had convictions for murder or manslaughter;
  • 100 had convictions for sex crimes – nearly half (47) had convictions for sex crimes involving a minor;
  • 70 had convictions for drug crimes; and,
  • 328 had convictions for driving under the influence.
"It is past time to put aside all the political rhetoric and listen to the facts – and the fact is, people are being hurt and victimized every day because of jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with ICE," said Acting Director Albence.
While making clear the consequences of uncooperative jurisdictions, Albence also commended law enforcement partners who do work with ICE because it is much safer for all involved if ICE officers take custody in the controlled environment of another law enforcement agency. Approximately 70 percent of the arrests ICE makes happen after ICE is notified about an alien being released from local jails or state prisons. In fiscal year 2019, ICE has lodged more than 160,000 detainers with local law enforcement agencies.
Acting Director Albence reiterated that ICE is sworn to uphold the federal immigration laws enacted by Congress and that the agency will carry out its sworn mission, with or without the cooperation of local law enforcement agencies.
"It is my sincere desire to work with local partners to whatever extent they are willing to work with this agency in what should be our shared goal to ensure public safety," he said. "Uncooperative jurisdictions should be on notice that as long as criminal offenders are being released, they should get used to seeing a lot more ICE at-large enforcement activity in their communities."
Nationally, approximately 90 percent of all people arrested by ICE during fiscal year 2019 either had a criminal conviction, a pending criminal charge, had illegally re-entered the United States after being previously removed (a federal felony), or were an immigration fugitive subject to a final order of removal.

ICE arrests 54 in NJ during a week-long enforcement action targeting at-large criminal aliens released into the community

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested 54 individuals throughout New Jersey during a weeklong action targeting public safety threats who were released from local law enforcement custody into the community instead of being transferred to ICE.
They hail from 12 countries – Mexico (21), Jamaica (1), Ecuador (2), Honduras (4), Dominican Republic (3), El Salvador (9), Guatemala (3), Guyana (1), Brazil (7), Costa Rica (1), Georgia (1) and Pakistan (1).
Even with these arrests, there are still public safety threats in the community.
  • Luciano Trejo-Dominguez, 33, was arrested Aug. 12 by the Vineland Police Department for aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault (victim 13-15 years old), criminal restraint, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child. On Aug. 13, 2019 and Aug. 14, 2019, respectively, the Pacific Enforcement Response Center and the ICE office in Mount Laurel both lodged detainers on Trejo-Dominguez with the Cumberland County Jail. He was released into the community Aug. 23, 2019, and remains at-large.
  • On Aug. 18, 2019, Edgar Camarillo-Ruiz,33, was arrested by the New Brunswick Police Department for the charge of Simple Assault - Domestic Violence. On August 19, 2019, ICE lodged a detainer with the Middlesex County Jail; however, the detainer was not honored, and Camarillo-Ruiz was released into the community. He remains at-large.
  • On Dec. 24, 2018, Elvis Rafael Cabrera-Vasquez, 38, was arrested by the Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Police Department and charged with Simple Assault/Domestic Violence. ICE lodged a detainer that same day with the Middlesex County Jail; however, the detainer was not honored, and Cabrera-Vasquez was released into the community. On Feb. 14, 2019, Cabrera-Vasquez was arrested by the Perth Amboy, New Jersey Police Department and charged with Contempt-Violate a Domestic Violence Judicial Order.
All three men are wanted by ICE and featured on the agency's website with a public appeal for information leading to their capture.

"ERO deportation officers are committed to enforcing immigration laws fairly and professionally," said acting Field Office Director Ruben Perez for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Newark. "These vital operations clearly show who ICE targets in an effort to protect the nation, while seeking to remove criminal aliens who pose a clear threat to public safety."
ICE lodges detainers on individuals who have been arrested on criminal charges and who ICE has probable cause to believe are removable aliens. The detainer asks the other law enforcement agency to notify ICE in advance of release and to maintain custody of the alien for a brief period of time so that ICE can take custody of that person in a safe and secure setting upon release from that agency's custody. When law enforcement agencies fail to honor immigration detainers and release serious criminal offenders onto the streets, it undermines ICE's ability to protect public safety and carry out its mission.
ERO deportation officers targeted at-large criminal aliens in non-cooperative jurisdictions, illegal re-entrants, immigration fugitives, and people in violation of immigration law during the operation which ran from Saturday, Sept. 21, to Wednesday, Sept. 25.
In FY2018, ERO arrested 158,581 aliens, 90% of whom had criminal convictions (66%) pending criminal charges (21%) or previously issued final orders of removal (3%). The overall arrest figure represents an 11% increase over FY2017. In FY2018, ERO removed 256,086 illegal aliens, reflecting an increase of 13% over FY2017. Most removals (57%) were convicted criminals. Additionally, 5,914 of the removed illegal aliens were classified as either known or suspected gang members or terrorists, which is a 9% increase over FY2017.
These arrests were driven by leads developed by the local field office in conjunction with the Pacific Enforcement Response Center and the National Criminal Alien Targeting Center. ICE focuses its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security. However, ICE does not exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement. All those in violation of immigration law may be subject to arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States. ICE does not conduct sweeps or raids that arrest aliens indiscriminately.

ICE arrests more than 80 during 5-day enforcement action in New York City, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island

NEW YORK – Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested more than 80 during a 5-day period, ending Sep. 25, in New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island.
During the enforcement effort, ERO arrested 82 individuals for violating U.S. immigration laws. Of those arrested, more than 40 had been previously released from local law enforcement custody with an active detainer. Ten of those arrested were previously removed from the United States and returned illegally. Several had prior felony convictions for serious or violent offenses, such as sexual crimes, weapons charges, and assault, or had past convictions for significant or multiple misdemeanors.
"Of those arrested during these five days, more than half were released from local custody with an active detainer. That is more than three dozen illegal aliens with convictions or criminal charges who were released back into New York communities, further putting the safety of its residents at risk," said Thomas R. Decker, field office director for ERO New York. "Because of the senseless local laws in New York City, thousands of illegal aliens have been released; and as this trend continues, thousands more will be released back into the communities to threaten the safety of our city's citizens. ICE deportation officers continue to focus enforcement efforts on arresting and removing those criminal aliens who think the laws of this country are mere suggestions."
ERO deportation officers arrested 42 individuals during this operation who were previously released from local law enforcement on an active detainer. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) places detainers on individuals who have been arrested on local criminal charges and who are suspected of being deportable, so that ICE can take custody of that person when he or she is released from local custody. When law enforcement agencies fail to honor immigration detainers and release serious criminal offenders onto the streets, it undermines ICE's ability to protect public safety and carry out its mission.
In years past, most of these individuals would have been turned over to ICE by local authorities upon their release from jail based on ICE detainers. Now that many sanctuary cities, including New York City, do not honor ICE detainers, these individuals, who often have significant criminal histories, are released onto the street, presenting a potential public safety threat. Ultimately, efforts by local NYC politicians have shielded removable criminal aliens from immigration enforcement and created another magnet for more illegal immigration, all at the expense of the safety and security of the very people it purports to protect.
Arrests include:
  • In Staten Island, a 24 year-old Mexican national released from NYPD custody with an active detainer, who haspending charges for rape 2nd: intercourse with person less than 15 years, and act in manner injure child less than 17 years old, rape 3rd: victim less than 17 years old, and sexual misconduct;
  • In Yonkers, a 32 year-old Peruvian national released from NYPD custody with an active detainer, who has pending charges for forcibly touching: touch sexual/intimate parts of another person; forcible touching - subject victim to sexual contact on bus/train/subway, and sexual abuse 3rd: subject another person to sex contact without consent;
  • In Yonkers, a 40 year-old Mexican national released from NYPD custody with an active detainer, who has pending charges for forcibly touching: touch sexual/intimate parts of another person, and sexual abuse 3rd;
  • In Jamaica, a 27 year-old Indian national released from NYPD custody with an active detainer, who has pending charges for rape 3rd: victim less than 17 years old;
  • In Mamaroneck, a 51 year-old Mexican national and registered sexual offender, released from NYPD custody with an active detainer, who has convictions for unlawful surveillance 2nd: use imaging device to view under clothing, and DWI. He has pending charges for forcible touching, public lewdness, sexual abuse 3rd, and unlawful surveillance;
  • In Manhattan, a 24 year-old Dominican national released from NYPD custody with an active detainer, who has pending charges for rape 3rd: victim less than 17 years old, criminal sexual act 3: victim less than 17 years old, and sexual abuse 3rd: subject another person to sex contact without consent;
  • In the Bronx, a 26 year-old Dominican national, with an outstanding removal order, released from NYPD custody with an active detainer who has pending charges for criminal possession of a weapon 2nd: loaded firearm, criminal possession of weapon 3rd: ammunition feeding device, criminal possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of marijuana;
  • In the Bronx, a 30 year-old Filipino national who has a conviction for possessing sexual performance by child less than 16 years old;
  • In Manhattan, a 30 year-old Algerian national who has convictions for assault, forcible touching, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation;
  • In Manhattan, a 35 year-old Dominican national and registered sexual offender, who has a conviction for rape 2nd: intercourse with person less than 15 years old, for which a sentence of 3 years imprisonment, and 8 years of parole supervision was imposed
Criminal histories of those arrested during the enforcement effort are as follows: Act in Manner Injure Child, aggravated DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Assault, Criminal Contempt, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of Marijuana, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Sex Act, DWI, Endangering the Welfare of a Child; Forcible Touching, Grand Larceny, Harassment, Kidnapping, Petit Larceny, Possessing Sexual Performance by Child, Public Lewdness, Rape, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Course Of Sexual Conduct Against a Child 2nd, Sexual Misconduct, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, and Unlawful Surveillance.
The arrestees include nationals from Algeria, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ghana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Spain, and Ukraine. ERO deportation officers made arrests throughout New York City, the Hudson Valley, and on Long Island, specifically in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, and the Hudson Valley counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster, and Westchester. One arrest was made in Essex County, New Jersey.
ICE focuses its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security. However, ICE no longer exempts classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement. All of those in violation of immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States.
Some of the individuals arrested during this operation will face federal criminal prosecutions for illegal entry and illegal re-entry after removal. Depending on the alien's criminal history, an alien who illegally reenters the United States, has committed a felony punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison. The arrestees who are not being federally prosecuted, are detained in ICE custody, and will be processed administratively for removal from the United States.
Any local jurisdiction thinking that refusing to cooperate with ICE will result in a decrease in local immigration enforcement is mistaken. Local jurisdictions that choose to not cooperate with ICE are likely to see an increase in ICE enforcement activity, as in jurisdictions that do not cooperate with ICE the agency has no choice but to conduct more at-large arrest operations. A consequence of ICE being forced to make more arrests on the streets is the agency is likely to encounter other unlawfully present foreign nationals that wouldn't have been encountered had we been allowed to take custody of a criminal target within the confines of a local jail.
Despite the severe challenges that local policies have created for ICE, we remain committed to our public safety mission and we will continue to do our sworn duty to seek out dangerous criminal aliens and other immigration violators. ICE seeks straightforward cooperation with all local law enforcement and elected officials.
ICE deportation officers carry out targeted enforcement operations every day in locations around the country as part of the agency's ongoing efforts to protect the nation, uphold public safety, and protect the integrity of our immigration laws and border controls. These operations involve existing, established Fugitive Operations Teams.

With the release of the rough transcript of the July 25 call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump, Schiff's prediction that it would show Trump had 'crossed the Rubicon' has failed to materialize," former Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) writes in Fox News. "There was no quid pro quo – no 'browbeating' of a foreign leader. Just two heads of state talking about Ukraine's role in 2016 U.S. election interference and discussing getting to the bottom of the corruption that has spilled over between the two countries. With his history of deliberately distorting the truth, secretly disclosing classified information, and openly converting the House Intelligence Committee into a partisan opposition research operation, Schiff has repeatedly proven he cannot be trusted."
The Trump Administration "agreed on Wednesday to stay in a United Nations body that has regulated international mail service for more than a century after delegates agreed during emergency talks to change the way postal fees are structured," Nick Cumming-Bruce reports for The New York Times. The deal "will allow the United States to start setting its own postal fees in July and allow other countries that receive more than 75,000 metric tons of mail a year to start phasing in higher rates in January 2021." White House Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Peter Navarro called the decision a "huge victory for millions of American workers and businesses," saving the U.S. between $300 million and $500 million a year.
"In the media's efforts to tie President Donald Trump with its latest conspiracy theory, CNN skipped an entire section of the released and unredacted transcript of a phone call to charge Trump with requesting a favor he never asked for," Tristan Justice reports for The Federalist. The transcript that CNN read on air wrongly connected the word "favor" with President Trump "asking the Ukrainian leader to look into former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter's questionable business dealings with a Ukrainian energy company"—a full 540 words later.
"The United States and Japan outlined initial details of a trade deal Wednesday as they … iron out a broader agreement," Jacob Pramuk reports for CNBC. "The first stage of the accord will open markets up to about $7 billion in U.S. agricultural products, President Donald Trump said at a signing ceremony with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the United Nations. Japan will also reduce tariffs on products such as beef and pork, and eliminate tariffs on goods such as almonds, blueberries and broccoli."

OC’s Jellyfish Festival Wants To Return For Second Year

OCEAN CITY — With the first-ever Jellyfish Festival in June providing something to build on, organizers this week filed an application with the Town of Ocean City to bring a bigger and better event back to the resort next year.

The inaugural Jellyfish Music Festival, held on the beach downtown and at venues all over the resort in June, provided a blueprint of sorts for future events. The event featured a live entertainment festival combined with action sports, family-oriented interactive entertainment and arts and culture in and around the Jellyfish Tentacle Village.

It utilized the town's best assets including a state-of-the-art sound stage on the beach downtown and brought in significant headline acts for the first year. The live entertainment at the main stage on the beach downtown featured three theme nights.

Fresh Friday catered to a younger, millennial crowd with acts such as Badfish and Ballyhoo. Classic Saturday featured acts catering to a slightly older demographic including Styx, Crack the Sky and the Rayvns, for example. On Sunday, the festival transitioned to a family-friendly "music with a message" theme with acts such as Newboys and Crowder.

Laurel Man Charged with 5th Offense DUI After Crash-Laurel

Laurel- The Delaware State Police have arrested 36-year-old Jerod M. Kernodle with his 5th offense DUI after he was involved in a motor vehicle crash.
The incident occurred on September 25, 2019 at approximately 5:57 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Sussex Highway (US 13), south of Trussum Pond Road involving injuries.  Further investigation revealed that a 2008 Chrysler Minivan was stopped at a red light on northbound US 13, when a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage, operated by Kernodle struck the rear of the vehicle.
When Troopers made contact with Kernodle an odor of alcohol was detected and a DUI investigation ensued.  A computer inquiry revealed that Kernodle  had four previous DUI convictions, making this his fifth offense, and a suspended driver's license.
The operator of the minivan a 33-year-0ld female and her 7-year-old passenger were transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Kernodle did not sustain injury and was taken into custody at the scene.  He was transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with the following:
  •  5th Offense Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (Felony)
  • Vehicular Assault Third Degree (2 counts)
  • Driving While Suspended
Kernodle was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $6000.00 cash only bond.

CDC case study finds deer with tuberculosis can transmit bacteria to people

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning hunters that deer with tuberculosis can transmit the bacteria to humans.

The report stems from a case in Michigan in 2017 where a 77-year-old man who had no exposure to people or countries with endemic tuberculosis was diagnosed with the disease.

According to the CDC, the man was a regular hunter and had dressed deer in the state for 20 years. Following lab tests, the man was found to have been exposed to mycobacterium bovis, a bacterium found in deer, cattle, bison, and elk which can be spread to humans and cause TB.

Jeep Wrangler under investigation after reports of bad frame welds, steering issues

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration is investigating complaints from Jeep Wrangler owners about poor frame welds and potentially related steering problems.

The action involves approximately 270,000 JL Wranglers from the 2018 and 2019 model years and comes after 3,566 complaints and a petition filed by an owner last year.

No accidents or injuries have been linked to the reports.

New Drugs May Offer Prostate Cancer Cure

It's fitting that during the month of September, which is National Prostate Awareness month, British researchers have announced a new class of medications that shows promise for inhibiting prostate cancer growth.

According to Medical Daily, researchers from the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath have zeroed in on a protein — called AMACR — that is highly active in aggressive prostate cancers, as well as in a number of other cancers.

The UK team developed new drugs that targeted and lowered the activity level of this aggressive protein. And this discovery may open up new pathways for research in treating a whole range of cancers, they say.

"This means that we have some really promising avenues to explore as we work toward developing new treatments against prostate cancer and other cancers where AMACR is involved," says Dr. Matthew Lloyd, lead author from the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology.

Sunfest Attendance Exceeds Previous Record By 18%

OCEAN CITY — With picture-perfect weather and a diverse line-up of live music, Sunfest weekend last week was by far the highest attended, blowing away the previous record set just last year.

Wow is about the only way to describe the 45th Annual Sunfest celebration last week. The four-day event attracted 317,419 visitors, blowing away the record 268,406 that attended last year's event. The new mark set last weekend represented a 18% increase over the 2018 record.

With a great line-up of live entertainment and the usual collection of food and craft vendors along with a few new wrinkles, everything lined up well for the 2019 Sunfest, but the real star was the weather. With clear skies and warm temperatures leading up to and during the event, Sunfest enthusiasts came in droves as evidenced by the numbers.

It's important to note the 317,419 attendees reported represent those who went through the gates at the event at the Inlet and does not necessarily reflect the total number of visitors in Ocean City last weekend. Anecdotally, traffic in town and crowds at area businesses made it appear as if it was a peak summer weekend. Ocean City Special Events Director Frank Miller said it became evident early on the 2019 Sunfest event was primed to be a record-breaker.

How to waste a year of America’s time

Americans "want a Congress that delivers results for the people, opening up opportunity and lifting up their lives. When our new members take the oath, our Congress will be refreshed, and our democracy will be strengthened by the optimism, idealism and patriotism of this transformative freshman class."

That was newly elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on January 3, during the opening session of the 116th Congress. Whether she meant those words at the time is now irrelevant, as the actions of her party this year have betrayed any such vision of a real legislative agenda for working Americans.

Yesterday, Congressional Democrats gave yet another snapshot of how they spend their days now. After months of pressure, Speaker Pelosi caved to the far-left base (sorry, "transformative freshman class") that she has been unable to appease, announcing that she is launching official impeachment inquiries into President Trump. Although Democrats have been hinting at impeachment as a political weapon for two years, the latest excuse they give comes as a response to hyped-up reports of a supposed "quid pro quo" offered to President Zelensky of Ukraine.

Slight problem: It turns out the story was completely false. The transcript released by the White House today proves that Democrats simply made up their claims of a "quid pro quo" between President Trump and President Zelensky.

Here we go again.

Democrats in Congress devote all their time and energy to rumors and innuendo rather than governing. It doesn't matter if none of it turns out to be true—by then, their media surrogates have spread the lie far and wide. In the process, Speaker Pelosi's ranks have squandered nearly a year's worth of time on a single failed agenda item: endless investigations and obstruction. Yesterday's antics explain why Americans are fed up with Washington and why Congress' approval numbers sit at an abysmal 18 percent.


Imagine all that could have been accomplished had Democrats devoted this year to issues that actually matter to middle-class Americans, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement:

Americans deserve elected officials who focus on key issues to improve the lives of families, strengthen our communities, grow our economy, and keep our country safe. In President Donald J. Trump they have someone who has not only focused on those goals, but delivered results.  
 
In a far departure from all of the work and results of this President, House Democrats have destroyed any chances of legislative progress for the people of this country by continuing to focus all their energy on partisan political attacks. Their attacks on the President and his agenda are not only partisan and pathetic, they are in dereliction of their Constitutional duty.  
 
The Trump Administration will continue to be vigorous in laying out the facts and standing up for the many forgotten men and women who elected him.

The window for Democrats to do anything of substance this year is closing fast. When Nancy Pelosi spoke about a "new dawn" while accepting the gavel as Speaker earlier this year, she gave the impression that Congress would finally function differently under her watch.

It doesn't. And no one's holding their breath that her party will start putting the American people before their political ambitions.

At Least 60,000 Veterans Committed Suicide From '08-'17

At least 60,000 U.S. veterans have committed suicide over the span of a decade, according to a report released Friday by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The report highlighted data from 2008 to 2017 and found the veteran suicide rate was 1.5 times the rate of non-veterans.

Firearms were the method of suicide in nearly 71% of male veteran deaths and 43.2% of female veteran suicide deaths in 2017.

There is "no all-encompassing explanation for suicide" says the VA's 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report.

Mattel launches new gender-inclusive doll line

The new line of dolls will be sold in a kit with two hairstyle options (one shorter and one longer) and several styling possibilities.

Mattel, the company most known for its line of Barbie dolls, has just released a new line of customization, gender inclusive dolls. The new line, called "Creatable World" promises "endless combinations" of dolls so that "kids can just be kids."

Six different kits will be available in the new line. Each kit includes one doll, two hairstyle options (one longer and one shorter). and several styling possibilities. The dolls come in a variety of skin tones as well. The hair and clothing options for the dolls range from more feminine presenting to more masculine presenting, allowing children to combine the different elements however they want.

Mattel developed the new line of dolls alongside parents, physicians and kids themselves. The company has released more diverse dolls in the past, including a Barbie who uses a wheelchair and a Barbie with a prosthetic limb.

When U.S. Border Patrol agents started releasing illegal migrants at a San Antonio bus station in late March, sometimes in the middle of the night with no warning, Colleen Bridger didn't know what to do.

The assistant city manager wanted to speak with the Border Patrol to figure out what was going on, how to coordinate the drop-off times and how to assess the volume of migrants San Antonio could expect in the future. But because the Texas city is 150 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border and had never dealt with an influx of illegal immigrants before, there was a problem.

"I didn't even know the right department or division or office to call," Bridger said.

Since then, San Antonio has received more than 31,000 migrants released by the Border Patrol after they requested asylum. The city converted a former Quiznos restaurant into a migrant processing center, gave them food and medical screenings, provided cellphones so they could call relatives in the U.S, and partnered with a local church to provide overnight bed space. All told, those efforts have cost San Antonio more than $540,000.

A USA TODAY review of dozens of communities along the border – and some far from it – shows that local governments have spent at least $7 million over the past year to care for thousands of illegal migrants released after being detained by the federal government.

The demand, which came from U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Patrick Leahy (D-VT), resurfaced Wednesday in an opinion piece written by conservative Marc Thiessen in the Washington Post.
