Hogan Administration Announces Second Consecutive Decrease in Health Insurance Premiums

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 08:30 PM PDT

Maryland Insurance Administration Announces 10.3% Average Decrease for Individual Market in 2020; Consumers Benefit from Year Two of State Reinsurance Program
ANNAPOLIS, MD–Governor Larry Hogan today announced that the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) has approved an average 10.3% premium rate decrease for individual health insurance plans with an effective date of January 1, 2020. This means that, for the second consecutive year, all individual insurance rates in Maryland will see important decreases.
The new rates reflect the impact of the State Reinsurance Program, which has helped to lower rates and stabilize the individual health insurance market after years of major premium increases. Coupled with last year's decrease of 13.2%, the two-year cumulative impact is a rate decrease of more than 22% versus 2018 premiums.
"By addressing this crisis head-on, we have gone from an individual market on the brink of collapse to two straight years of lower premiums for Marylanders," said Governor Hogan. "Last year, after we refused to accept Washington's failure to act, we came together to deliver lower rates for the first time in more than a decade. Our innovative program to make healthcare more affordable for Marylanders serves as a model for the rest of the nation."
In 2018, facing predicted health insurance rate increases of up to 50%, the Hogan administration worked in bipartisan fashion with legislative leaders to develop landmark legislation establishing a state reinsurance program. The legislation directed the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange to submit a State Innovation Waiver under Section 1332 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to the U.S. Secretaries of Health, Human Services, and Treasury to establish the program. The legislation combined with this waiver set up a reinsurance pool to provide funding for catastrophic claims for policyholders in the individual market.

"After years of devastating rate increases, it is certainly gratifying to see our individual market begin to stabilize," said Maryland Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr. "The approved rates have improved over what was originally proposed, due to the hard work of our Chief Actuary and his team, as well as the collaborative work of the insurer's actuarial teams. We are hopeful that those Marylanders that continue to go uninsured will investigate the benefits and federal subsidies that may be available to them."
To assist the administration in making its rate decision, MIA actuaries reviewed the data, methodologies, and assumptions companies used to develop their proposed premium rates. The MIA also considered public comments, along with other relevant factors, in determining whether to approve, modify or deny requested rates.

Dan Brouillette: ‘Impossible’ to Reduce ‘Carbon Emissions’ Without ‘Nuclear Energy’

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 08:00 PM PDT

A national energy strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions yielded from the burning of fossil fuels requires the use of nuclear energy, determined Deputy Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette, offering his analysis in a Tuesday interview on SiriusXM's Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow.

Those opposing the use of nuclear energy — or neglecting to highlight its value within a national energy policy — cannot be "serious" or "sincere" in their stated concerns to address carbon dioxide emissions, stated Brouillette.

"It's hard to know what to make of that, except it's nonsense, for the most part," said Brouillette of opposition to fracking and broader fossil fuel development.

Increasing domestic production of fossil fuels and alternatives increases American autonomy in the dimension of energy, explained Brouillette. "[We must reduce] our dependence on countries that, candidly, do not have our interests in mind. … In the '70s [and] '80s we were highly dependent [on the Organization of Oil Exporting Countries]. These were countries that were adversaries, quite frankly, and I am very proud of the work this president [and] administration has done to turn that around."

Democratic primary voters more enthusiastic about Warren than Biden: poll

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 07:30 PM PDT

Joe Biden remains the front-runner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, but a new national survey indicates Sen. Elizabeth Warren tops the former vice president by double digits when it comes to enthusiasm.

Thirty-five percent of likely Democratic primary voters questioned in a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll said they're enthusiastic about voting for the populist senator from Massachusetts who's put out one progressive policy proposal after another. That's a dozen percentage points ahead of the 23 percent who said they were enthusiastic about voting for the former vice president.

And Warren -- who's been on a steady rise in both national and early primary and caucus voting state polling the last five months -- also gets the most second-choice support, with 21 percent of Democratic primary voters saying she would be their second choice in the record-setting field of roughly 20 White House hopefuls.

SHOCKING: Democrats’ Red Flag Laws Meant to Take Weapons from Rural Gun Owners – But Not Gang Members Who Commit 80% of Gun Homicides

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 07:00 PM PDT

Democrats want to pass Red Flag gun laws in order to take guns from American gun owners.

On Tuesday Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) joined Tucker Carlson to discuss the Democrats' red flag gun laws.

Rep. Buck said Democrats want to use the laws to take guns from rural Americans but that Democrats voted down his amendment to include gang members in the legislation.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee rejected an amendment that would have red-flagged anyone who law enforcement lists as a gang member. According to JPFO.org 80% of gun homicides are committed by gang members.

Hillary Clinton Suggests She Lost Wisconsin and Michigan to Trump in 2016 Because ‘Millions of Voters Were Purged From the Rolls’

Hillary Clinton just won't stop whining about her 2016 election loss.

Loser Hillary spoke at George Washington University on Tuesday where she claimed that she is counseling 2020 Democrat hopefuls on how to run a successful campaign.

Clinton said that 'voter suppression,' fake news stories and the evil Electoral College contributed to her crushing election loss.

"You can run the best campaign and have the best plans and get the nomination and win the popular vote and you can lose the Electoral College and therefore the election," Hillary said.

90 PER CENT OF PLASTIC WASTE POLLUTING EARTH’S OCEANS COMES FROM ASIA AND AFRICA

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 05:30 PM PDT

Despite westerners being lectured by climate activists like Greta Thunberg, a study has found that around 90 per cent of plastic waste polluting earth's oceans comes from Asia and Africa.

During her U.S. tour, Thunberg cited "horrifying pictures of plastic in the oceans," as one of the primary reasons why Americans should listen to her.

However, researchers at Germany's Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research discovered that a small number of rivers account for the vast majority of plastic pollution and none of them are located in western countries.

"The 10 top-ranked rivers transport 88-95 percent of the global load into the sea," Dr. Christian Schmidt, a hydrogeologist who led the study, told the Daily Mail. "The rivers with the highest estimated plastic loads are characterized by high population – for instance the Yangtze with over half a billion people."

Officers from the Ocean City Police Department, Maryland State Police, Worcester County Sheriff's Office, the Maryland Transportation Authority and Maryland Natural Resources Police will be strictly enforcing all traffic laws.

Spectators are urged to keep the sidewalks clear for pedestrian traffic and should not incite the spinning of wheels or "burn-outs" by motorist. Officers will enforce all laws for spectators who incite drivers, as well as cite drivers for these violations. Further, with high pedestrian traffic expected, pedestrians are urged to Walk Smart! and always use crosswalks when crossing roadways. Wait for the signal to change and be sure that drivers see you while crossing.

Migration Flow Down but Border Security Events on the Rise - U.S. Border Patrol Agents Continue to Disrupt Criminal Activity

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 04:30 PM PDT

EL PASO, Texas – Reduced border crossing numbers aided by efforts of the Mexican government have allowed U.S. Border Patrol Agents from El Paso Sector to reemphasize traditional activities, resulting in drug seizures and criminal apprehensions along the West Texas and New Mexico borders.

On September 12, during routine activities, Border Patrol Agents assigned to the Alamogordo Station Highway 54 Checkpoint discovered three bundles of heroin with an approximate weight of 9 lbs. Both driver and passenger were taken into custody and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration along with the heroin.

During a separate incident near Ft. Hancock Station, Border Patrols Agents received a citizen report of possible illegal alien activity. Responding Agents encountered a U.S. Citizen who was wanted for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender in Austin. Further records checks revealed an extensive criminal history, including a conviction for Sexual Assault. The subject was turned over to Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office for extradition.

Aerial surveillance assets conducting international boundary air operations on September 13 notified agents at Clint Border Patrol Station that two subjects were illegally entering the United States east of the Tornillo Port of Entry. Clint Station Border Patrol Agents responded and arrested two subjects carrying bundles of marijuana weighing approximately 93 pounds. The marijuana and the two subjects were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

In the early hours of September 16th, a Border Patrol canine at Alamogordo Station Highway 54 Checkpoint led agents to 44 bundles of marijuana weighing 54 pounds with an approximate street value of $43,296.00. The United States Citizen Driver was taken into custody and turned over to the Otero County Narcotics Enforcement Unit along with the marijuana.

In a second incident on September 16, Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station agents identified a convicted sex offender in their custody. The 57-year-old Mexican National had served four years for Aggravated Sexual Assault in September 1983 and was again charged with Sexual Assault with a Child in 2002. The second conviction led to his removal from the United States in 2015. He is being held in custody pending criminal prosecution.

"These incidents demonstrate how effective our skilled U.S. Border Patrol agents are when focused on the mission of National Security, said Gloria Chavez, Interim Chief for the Border Patrol's El Paso Sector. "With this temporary reduction of migration flow at the border, our Agents are adding consequences to those involved in criminal activity, resulting in increased interdictions of people being smuggled, detention of criminals, and seizure of narcotics."

On September 17, El Paso Border Patrol Station agents observed a group attempting to illegally enter the United States east of the Bridge of the Americas Port of Entry. Responding agents were informed by fleeing subjects south of the international boundary that one subject had fallen into the American Canal. The agents and Border Patrol's Search, Trauma, and Rescue team (BORSTAR) located a body entangled in rope and submerged in the canal. The coroner arrived, pronounced the subject dead at 6:30 a.m. local time, and removed the body. Meanwhile, agents apprehended two subjects who were accompanying the deceased.

It is important to note that an arrest should not be considered evidence of guilt, and subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection welcomes assistance from the community. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the U.S. Border Patrol, while remaining anonymous by calling 1-800-635-2509 toll-free.

'No evidence it was fiction': Ex-New York Times editor defends botched Kavanaugh story

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 04:00 PM PDT

Former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson defended the newspaper's story on a sexual misconduct allegation against Justice Brett Kavanaugh, even after an editor's note acknowledged it left out key details.

"I think my move would have been the moves that the Times has made. I mean, no one has challenged the basic accuracy of the story that they published, or of what is in the book," Abramson said when Fox News host Harris Faulkner asked her how she would have handled the situation. "It's true that a material fact was left out, and the Times ran the editor's note explaining that, which is what you do when you leave something out. But it was no conspiracy to leave out that fact. It was unfortunately cut from the piece, as I understand it."

Faulkner then pressed Abramson for what she meant by "no one has challenged" the story, saying, "How can you challenge if the alleged victim and the one witness they talk about, who actually didn't witness anything, he did talk to senators and the FBI about what he thinks he saw, but people may have been too drunk to remember? The alleged victim didn't remember any assault. It's hard to take on something that even the victim doesn't say happened."

Melania Trump Participates in Reopening of Washington Monument

"First lady Melania Trump, alongside a group of local fourth graders, helped cut the ribbon to re-open the Washington Monument, which had been under construction in the wake of a 2011 earthquake," Kate Bennett reports for CNN.

"When it first opened to the public in 1888, it used to take more than 10 minutes to reach the top of the 500-foot Washington Monument, by steam-propelled elevator. Today, it's automated, and the ride in a posh new lift with video screens is just 70 seconds."

"If you haven't heard, President Trump has declared war on California, the auto industry and the world's climate. Or that's what liberals are saying about his Administration's plans to revoke California's waiver that lets it set national fuel economy rules that raise costs for consumers across the country," The Wall Street Journal editorial board writes. "The Trump Administration isn't prohibiting [automakers] from manufacturing more fuel-efficient and electric cars. Liberals call the President a totalitarian, but he's the one giving consumers and businesses a choice."
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar are right to push back against the United Nations on abortion, Grace Melton writes for Fox News. "We remain gravely concerned [about] aggressive efforts to reinterpret international instruments to create a new international right to abortion," the two Cabinet secretaries wrote in a joint letter to diplomats.
"She's done a lot with the place. Like anyone who has ever spruced up their home, Melania Trump will have a few new touches to showcase Friday when guests visit the White House for only the second state dinner of the Trump presidency," Darlene Superville writes in The Associated Press. "There's refreshed wall fabric in the Red Room, repurposed draperies in the Green Room and restored furniture in the Blue Room. And those are just some of the home improvement projects the first lady has overseen."

New Post-Labor Day School Start Study Shows Significant Economic Impact

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 03:00 PM PDT

$115 million impact mirrors Maryland Bureau of Revenue Estimates forecast in 2013 report

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (September 19, 2019) - Starting school after Labor Day has "a clear, positive impact on both state and local government economies" with a total net economic impact of up to $115 million, according to a new analysis from the Business Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) at Salisbury University.

The report, entitled "The Economic, Employment and Fiscal Impacts Of Added Summer Vacation Days Attributable To Post-Labor Day Opening of Maryland's Public K-12 Schools," echoes an economic impact study conducted by the Maryland Bureau of Revenue Estimates in 2013, which forecast a significant increase in state and local tax revenues and wages resulting from a Post-Labor Day school start date.

"This independent analysis validates what we already know: starting school after Labor Day is good for Maryland families, good for our local businesses and good for the Maryland economy," said Comptroller Peter Franchot. "At a time when the state is considering new sources of revenue for our public schools, this adds millions of dollars to our state's coffers, all while supporting great family-owned, small businesses and sustaining summer employment."

BEACON's analysis found a total net economic impact -- incorporating direct, indirect and induced benefits -- of close to $58 million for six additional days of summer vacation and nearly $115 million for 12 extra days, depending upon when Labor Day falls on the calendar each year.

Additionally, the report estimates additional wages earned by workers to be between $2.875 million and $5.75 million during the final days of summer with local and state government revenues increasing between $8 million and $16 million, also depending upon the timing of Labor Day.

"Tourism is one of our state's most important economic engines and is especially critical to areas like my hometown of Baltimore City, where the tourism industry is an even more significant employer and source of local revenue," said Michael Haynie, a hotel management consultant, former chairman of the Maryland Tourism Coalition and a member of the Governor's Task Force to Study a Post-Labor Day Start Date for Maryland Public Schools. "The extended summer also means more employment opportunities for our city's youth before heading back to the classroom, providing much-needed family income and experience in a major job sector."

The study's findings are based on estimates that approximately 70 percent of all tourism-related expenditures statewide can be attributed to Maryland residents and data from tourism offices that show the majority of end-of-summer travel by Marylanders occurs within the state.

"I am thrilled to see the positive results and increased economic impact caused by a post-Labor Day school start in Maryland; however, I am not surprised," said Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan. "Worcester County has accomplished a successful post-Labor Day start date for years and students in our schools have continued to thrive. In fact, our very own Ocean City Elementary School was named a Blue Ribbon School for a second time in 2018."

"A post-Labor Day school start benefits all Marylanders. The hard work and dedication to this initiative displayed by Governor Hogan and Comptroller Franchot have not only allowed Maryland families to enjoy more summer vacation together, but has also increased our room tax revenue and allowed seasonal employees to work longer. It's incredible to see how common sense and thoughtful planning can create such a positive change for us all," added Meehan.

Tourism is the state's 10th largest employment industry, supporting more than 200,000 jobs and producing over $15 billion, which represents four percent of the state's total economy.

The nonpartisan task force, created by the Maryland General Assembly and appointed by then-Governor Martin O'Malley, recommended a post-Labor Day start by a vote of 12 to 3 in May 2014 after meeting for nearly a year to consider all aspects of the issue.

Public support for starting school after Labor Day has been strong and consistent throughout Maryland among teachers, parents and the business and agricultural community. More than 24,000 Marylanders signed the "Let Summer Be Summer" petition in 2016 -- endorsing the initiative that has given families more time together, provided teachers and students with a longer break to recharge without impacting summer learning loss, and afforded rural Marylanders the opportunity to participate in the Maryland State Fair, which runs the 10 days prior to Labor Day each year.

"As a teacher, I know starting school after Labor Day not only is economically beneficial to our communities, it is crucial to the professional development and well-being of teachers and administrators," said Baltimore County public school teacher Jeffrey Freedman. "Many teachers take coursework during the summer and need that time to complete that work while others value the time to unwind with their families and recharge. A post-Labor Day start helps us be the most successful, effective teachers we can be."

An economic impact study conducted by the Bureau of Revenue Estimates in August 2013 projected a post-Labor Day school start would generate an additional $74.2 million in economic activity, including $3.7 million in new wages and a separate $7.7 million in state and local revenue. These findings mirror the study just concluded by BEACON, which will release its full analysis in October.

"This study confirms what teachers and parents have been saying for years: starting school after Labor Day is good for parents, students and Maryland's economy," said Denise Avara, a longtime public school mom and PTA leader. "I've listened to families, educators and owners of small businesses for a long time who called for a later start to school for very good reasons -- mostly because it helps all of us."

Horowitz lays out next steps in FISA report process: 'We want to make as much of this public' as possible

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 02:30 PM PDT

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz promised to make as much of his investigation into the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, finished last week, as public as possible.

Horowitz appeared in front of the Democrat-led House Oversight Committee on Wednesday along with a couple other inspectors general and laid out details about the next steps for his report on alleged FISA abuse by the DOJ and the FBI, telling the congressmen that he'd handed over a draft of his factual findings to Attorney General William Barr last week and that the process of review and classification was now just beginning, and could take a while.

Horowitz's investigative team reviewed more than a million records and conducted more than 100 interviews, and much of it was likely connected to classified matters connected to the Trump-Russia investigation and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Today I got this in the mail.

120 pages worth of info I didn't ask for or need.

Most seniors have access to the internet to look up anything they want about Medicare.

If not they can request one of these booklets.

However to send this out to everyone 65 or over is a waste of tax payer's money.

How much do you think this cost us???

Love the SBY and most of all love that you help pets get back home!!!

You are a good man Joe Albero!!!

DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz Reveals He Referred James Comey For Criminal Prosecution

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 12:30 PM PDT

DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on Wednesday morning.

Horowitz revealed to lawmakers that he criminally referred former FBI Director James Comey for prosecution.

The Justice Department ultimately declined prosecution and despite Comey bragging about this, the IG indeed concluded he criminally acted.

The Washington Times reported:

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz said Wednesday that he referred ex-FBI Director James Comey for criminal prosecution.

"We are required by the [Inspector General] Act to send information that we've identified that could plausibly be criminal to the Department of Justice," said Mr. Horowitz, confirming what amounted to a criminal referral.

The Justice Department ultimately decided not to prosecute Mr. Comey despite Mr. Horowitz's team concluding he improperly leaked information to the news media. The documents leaked by Mr. Comey were sensitive, but not classified.

Feds claim locked-up immigrants receive better healthcare than in home country despite deaths

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 12:00 PM PDT

TACOMA, Washington — The Immigration and Customs Enforcement official who oversees a detention center in the Pacific Northwest says immigrant advocates' claims that detainees are being mistreated and neglected while in custody do not match up with the types of services her staff provides.

Nathalie Asher, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations director for the Seattle field office, insisted those in custody at the Northwest ICE Processing Center, formerly known as the Northwest Detention Center, typically receive better care than they are accustomed to outside the U.S.

"They're coming from areas of the world where frankly they've never had a medical exam in their lives. The first time that they will have ever seen a doctor or certainly had a head-to-toe medical evaluation is in our custody," said Asher, who has overseen the privately operated center for six weeks, who opened it up last week for a rare tour for reporters.

American Airlines mechanic, who 'sabotaged a Florida jetliner is denied bail, ISIS ties revealed

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 11:30 AM PDT

An American Airlines mechanic accused of sabotage the navigation system of a flight due to take off in Florida in July has been denied bail, after the suspect's potential ties to the Islamic State were revealed by prosecutors.

Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, 60, is suspected to have glued foam inside a tube that would disable the navigation systems of an aircraft at Miami International Airport.

The veteran employee allegedly tampered with the plane to cause a delay or have the flight cancelled 'in anticipation of obtaining overtime.'

However, at a preliminary hearing in Miami Federal Court earlier today, prosecutors say they found ISIS propaganda on Alani's cell phone, including graphic images of a man being executed by a gunshot to the head.

Finding out what killed Ocean City whale could take ‘weeks or months’

It could be "weeks or months" before the National Aquarium in Baltimore is able to complete its necropsy on the young sperm whale that died after being stranded on an Ocean City beach, a spokesperson says.

"[The Maryland Department of Natural Resources] has led a team in partnership with the National Aquarium to complete a full necropsy, an animal autopsy," the spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday. "We are working hard to understand what made this whale sick, if it's a risk to other animals or people, and what, if anything, can be done to protect other animals."

"Unfortunately, in situations like this it is often very difficult to determine cause of death and results may be inconclusive."

Democrats, stuck in Watergate mode, bungle Lewandowski testimony

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 09:45 AM PDT

Have Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee figured out what President Trump did to them? By the looks of their questioning of Corey Lewandowski on Tuesday, the answer is no.

Democrats chose the former Trump campaign manager for their first hearing after declaring the committee is considering impeaching the president. They apparently thought Lewandowski would elaborate on his extensive testimony to special counsel Robert Mueller and also on his testimony from earlier investigations by other House and Senate committees.

Instead, Lewandowski jerked Democrats around — and around and around. He delayed. He asked for specific citations when anyone referred to the Mueller report. He repeated, over and over, his instructions from the Trump White House not to discuss his conversations with the president.

Alexander: Alcohol, Guns, and Prohibition

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 09:30 AM PDT

Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the iconoclastic sociologist-turned-senator from New York, once famously remarked, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts." Equally on point was this similar observation by my fellow Reagan administration Patriot, Bill Bennett: "We all have a right to our opinion, but that doesn't make all opinions right."

Their observations bring me to a recent newspaper op-ed in which a local columnist exercised her right to publish an above-the-fold opinion arguing that "assault weapons"1 should only be authorized for military use. (She also objected to handguns2 for self-defense.)

Predictably, her column was published in the wake of the attacks in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

Like all of us, she was horrified by these high-profile mass murders committed by sociopathic assailants using what she called "military style" rifles. But our emotional response should be tempered and informed by the facts, chief among those being that such attacks are extremely rare in a country of 330 million people, representing only a fraction of 1% of our nation's homicides.

Put another way, a homicide victim is far more likely to be murdered by an assailant using a knife, blunt object, or fists than by a rifle of any type.

Like me, I'm sure that this columnist considers ALL violence against innocents abhorrent, regardless of what weapon is used, particularly the epidemic of murders occurring in the urban poverty centers institutionalized by failed social policies of her Democrat Party. But like most of her demographic, she is predisposed to think violence is a "gun problem" rather than a complex cultural problem. Just take the guns away — problem solved!

So why am I rebutting a local op-ed columnist? For two reasons...

Shocking PSA depicts bloodied, terrified children in a school shooting

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 09:15 AM PDT

A public service announcement video shared by nonprofit group Sandy Hook Promise has stirred up significant controversy for its depiction of school children bleeding and screaming for their lives during an active school shooting.

The video begins as a satire of "back-to-school" commercials with young children showing off their new school supplies. After a few frames, screams can be heard in the background as the children promoting their new gear start to use school supplies as defensive weapons. Children jump through broken windows and wait, terrified, in locked classrooms and bathroom stalls.

The video, produced by Sandy Hook Promise, describes its call to action as: "Survive the school year with these must-have back to school essentials."

Saudi Arabia: Iran’s role in oil facility attacks is ‘undeniable’

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday displayed evidence it labeled as "undeniable" proof Iran was behind devastating attacks on two major oil facilities — the scorched remnants of missiles and drones that prompted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to call the attack an "act of war."

Saudi Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Turki al-Malki said 25 Iranian weapons were launched during the Saturday strikes that cut the kingdom's oil production in half and briefly sent crude prices soaring.

During a news conference in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, al-Malki showed reporters wreckage from some of what he said were 18 drones and seven cruise missiles used in the attacks.

Washington Monument to reopen after three-year closure

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 08:30 AM PDT

WASHINGTON — There's only one point in the nation's capital from which you can see the World War II Memorial, White House, the Jefferson Memorial and United States Capitol.

But for the past three years, Americans couldn't go up in the Washington Monument. The iconic landmark's elevator broke down about two to three times each week in 2016, prompting the National Park Service to close the structure for an elevator overhaul.

But Mike Litterst, spokesman for the park service's National Mall and Memorial Parks, said "we're open for good" when the monument stages its grand reopening on Thursday.

The Navy says those UFO videos are real

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 08:00 AM PDT

The U.S. Navy has confirmed that three online videos purportedly showing UFOs are genuine. The Navy says the videos, taken by Navy pilots, show "unexplained aerial phenomena" but also states that the clips should have never been released to the public in the first place.

The three videos in question are titled "FLIR1," "Gimbal" and "GoFast." They show two separate encounters between Navy aircraft and UFOs.

One video was taken in 2015 off the East Coast by a F/A-18F fighter jet using the aircraft's onboard Raytheon AN/ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared (ATFLIR) Pod. The other clip, also recorded with a Super Hornet ATFLIR pod, was taken off the coast of California in 2004 by pilots flying from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. In the videos, air crews loudly debate what the objects are and where they came from.

Separated migrant children likely to face lifelong trauma, Congress told

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 07:30 AM PDT

WASHINGTON – Migrant children who were separated from their parents will most likely deal with that trauma for the rest of their lives, a federal official told a congressional hearing Wednesday.

"The consequences of separation for many of these children will be lifelong," Jonathan White, Commander of the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps for the Health and Human Services Department told ranking members of several House appropriations subcommittees. "It is severe and difficult to manage even with high levels of clinical care."

In 2018, President Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance policy" on the Mexican border that created a new population of children being referred to facilities in the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which takes care of unaccompanied migrant children until they are released into the custody of a sponsor, usually a vetted family member.

Who Is CASA de Maryland?

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 07:00 AM PDT

CASA de Maryland (also called CASA) is a left-of-center 501(c)(3) immigration advocacy organization that helps immigrants, most often of Central American extraction, find employment, regardless of their legal status in the United States. CASA's executive director has told workers he will never turn their names over to federal immigration officials.

CASA leads its membership in political and policy advocacy that has included public demonstrations against the Trump administration's restrictionist immigration policies, promoting a path to citizenship for immigrants living illegally in the United States, promoting legislation allowing undocumented aliens to pay in-state tuition at Maryland state colleges, and campaigns to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

CASA is one of five organizations suing to overturn the Trump administration's decision to add a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. census form. In 2008, CASA tried to prevent the police department in Montgomery County, Maryland, from giving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents the names of foreign nationals arrested for violent crimes and illegal firearms possession.

In November 2007, CASA executive director Gustavo Torres attended a conference in Venezuela, a nation then ruled by hard-left socialist president Hugo Chavez, where the main event was a panel discussion entitled "United States: A possible revolution." The following year Citgo Petroleum – an oil company owned by the Venezuelan government – made a $1.5 million donation to CASA.

In addition to funding sources controlled by the Venezuelan government, federal state and local governments in the United States have provided a significant share of CASA's donations. A 2011 Washington Post profile reported that "nearly half" of CASA's $6 million budget came from "local, state and federal appropriations." Contributors noted in the 2017 CASA annual report include several federal agencies, the state governments of Maryland and Virginia, and local government agencies within those states.

RNC raises record-setting $23.5M in August, as GOP momentum builds

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 06:45 AM PDT

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is expected to announce this week that it raised a record-setting $23.5 million in August and had $53.8 million cash on hand as of the end of that month -- signaling growing GOP momentum heading into the 2020 elections.

It isn't unusual for a committee to perform well when its party controls the White House. But, even accounting for that advantage, the RNC's numbers were significant: the August fundraising total was the highest recorded in August during an off-cycle year by either the RNC or DNC, and the RNC has not had as much cash on hand since September 2016, just before Election Day.

The RNC's figures included only money directly contributed to the committee and did not include money contributed to any other joint committee.

50,000 Marylanders in jeopardy of losing food stamps

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 06:30 AM PDT

WASHINGTON — Maryland lawmakers sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Tuesday urging the department to rescind a proposed rule that would limit Americans' access to food stamps.

In a letter sent to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue, Maryland lawmakers said under that under the proposed rule, 50,000 Marylanders could be in jeopardy of losing their food stamps.

According to the USDA, the rule would close a loophole that allows states to make participants receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits to automatically be eligible for USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP.)

UPDATED: Ilhan Omar accuses Trump of putting her life in danger after retweeting false claim

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 06:15 AM PDT

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar accused President Trump of spreading "lies that put my life" in jeopardy after he retweeted a false claim about her on Wednesday.
Conservative pundit Terrence K. Williams tweeted a video of Omar with the caption: "GET THIS WOMAN OUT OF OFFICE. Ilhan Omar partied on the anniversary of 9/11 because she believes 'some people just did somethings.' President Trump was bashed for playing golf On MLK day but it's okay for Omar to party? RT so everyone can see this."
Attached to Williams' tweet was a video of Omar dancing along with other members of Congress. The Minnesota Democrat was in fact dancing at the Congressional Black Caucus' annual legislative conference, which took place on Sept. 13, not on the anniversary of the terrorists attacks.

Sarah Sanders: Media needs to take their 'opinion out of the news'

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 05:00 AM PDT

Former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders blasted the media for opinionated reporting during a Wednesday appearance on Fox Business Network.

Sanders, who debuted as a Fox News contributor earlier this month, was on the show to discuss a litany of examples involving Trump and his allies' relationship with the media.

She and anchor David Asman discussed how the New York Times botched a story about Justice Brett Kavanaugh, publishing another allegation of sexual misconduct against him but failing to mention the alleged victim has no recollection of the incident.

Gov. Hogan Asks Frosh To Pursue Violent Offenders In Baltimore

Posted: 19 Sep 2019 04:00 AM PDT

During a visit to Baltimore on Wednesday evening, Gov. Larry Hogan announced that he is directing Attorney General Brian Frosh to prosecute more violent crime cases in Baltimore City and asking Maryland State Police to execute more high-priority warrants for violent offenders.

Though Maryland's attorney general is independent of the governor, the attorney general's office may pursue cases at the direction or with the permission of the governor or lawmakers.

"I hereby direct you to independently investigate and prosecute criminal suits alleging violations of State criminal laws that relate to any of the following offenses in which any element of the crime occurs within Baltimore City: crimes of violence; crimes related to firearms; and organized crime," Hogan wrote in a letter to Frosh.
