Wells Fargo is facing multiple lawsuits from customers and employees over the long-running fake account fiasco that saw more than two million bogus, unauthorized accounts being opened in customers' names. Even though lawmakers and consumer advocates have repeatedly asked the bank to not sidestep its liability by using an often-ignored clause in its customer agreement, lawyers for Wells Fargo have already begun to play that "get out of jail free" card.

Hollywood publicity powerhouse Sunshine Sachs has cancelled its glitzy, star-studded annual holiday celebrations in solidarity with those whom its chief executive says are people who feel targeted by Donald Trump.

"We've been talking a lot about how to protect the things we care about, post-election," Sunshine Sachs CEO Shawn Sachs told industry outlet TheWrap on Tuesday.

"I felt the morning after was nothing compared to how I felt talking to people in this office, those who felt their citizenship — in a matter of moments — was gone or had been lessened," Sachs said of the election. "Being the diverse workplace we are, many of us felt under assault."

2 Md. men arrested after police find truck filled with 77 stolen holiday packages

COLUMBIA, Md. (ABC7) — Police arrested two Baltimore men who had a truck filled with 77 stolen holiday packages Wednesday night in Columbia, Maryland.

Ernest Ohanyan, 25, and Amjad Jaouni, 28, were each given a $5,000 bond, and police say Ohanyan was released while Jaouni is still being held at the Howard County Detention Center.

A resident called officers to report that a "suspicious box truck" was driving through the area and someone was stealing boxes from residents homes in the Greystone Lane neighborhood in Columbia.

US Steel CEO: Could Rehire 10,000, Trump Victory Bringing 'Environm

Wednesday on CNBC's "Power Lunch," the CEO of U.S. Steel Mario Longhi said after the election of Donald Trump, he has "felt an environment of positive optimism where forces are converging to provide for a better environment," which he hopes means he can rehire up to 10,000 employees.

Longhi said, "I have not felt an environment of positive optimism where forces are converging to provide for a better environment in quite a while. And this is pretty widespread. Customer suppliers, you know, throughout the communities."

He added, "I'm more than happy to bring back the employees that we were forced to lay off during the depression … It could be close to 10,000."

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Eating the most at the holiday table is a classic dad move. When everyone else quits on their second plate, there's always one person who grabs that third dish. And it's usually a man.

A study conducted by the Cornell Food and Brand Lab has found that men are at risk at overeating, simply because of their ego.

"Even if men aren't thinking about it, eating more than a friend tends to be understood as a demonstration of virility and strength," said co-author Kevin Kniffin, PhD, via News Medical.

This might be the quintessential study that explains men.

Mattis' selection was being formally announced Tuesday, and Mattis will appear with Trump at the evening event in Fayetteville, Vice President-elect Mike Pence said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Later this week there will be rallies in Iowa and Michigan as Trump barnstorms the country to salute his supporters who delivered the victories in the battleground states he needed to capture the White House.

The North Carolina rally comes a day after Trump chose retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson to be secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, raising fresh concerns about the lack of experience some of Trump's Cabinet picks have with agencies they're now being chosen to lead.

DOVER — A 29-year-old Maryland man testified Wednesday that he blacked out after a futile attempt to brake his vehicle that then careened out of control and injured seven people during Delaware State University's homecoming weekend in 2015.

Gregory A. Ligon, of Bowie, said he was "frustrated" and "surprised" that a Mercedes Benz safety function failed to shift the vehicle from reverse to park as he exited the vehicle while attempting to parallel park,

The DSU alumnus and former Hornets football player said he left the car to ask people behind him to move from the parking spot for their safety, but hadn't yet spoken before noticing his vehicle beginning to drift backward at approximately 7:28 p.m. on Oct. 24, 2015.

The proof is in the pudding- in this case, Kool-Aid.

On my CNBC daily feed this morning, I've copied below what the disbelievers are feeding us. They are in complete denial of facts. On Election Day the Dow opened at 18,251 points. Yesterday it closed at another new record, 19,251 – a gain of exactly 1,000 points! That equates to a gain of a whopping 5%!!! If we get that kind of gain each month, that would be a 60% gain for a year. Not too shabby, right. We're lucky to get 10% each year, when the averages are usually less than 8%. So, when CNBC (part of NBC and sister to MSNBC) states "The gains have not been spectacular…", what the Hell are they drinking? Obviously their own Kool-Aid concoction. They can't even report obvious facts and feel the need to distort them with quotes like that. So, who is the real distributor of "Fake News"? If that's not 'fake news', what is?

Worcester County Treasurer's Office officials recently completed the County's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for fiscal year 2016. This format, which adheres to the guidelines recommended by the Government Finance Officers Association, provides full accountability to Worcester County citizens and others with an interest in government finances. The CAFR outlines County finances and reflects a long-established history of prudent fiscal management practices.

Chris Hall of TGM Group, LLC, Certified Public Accountants met with the Commissioners on December 6, 2016 to review Worcester County Government's annual financial report for the year ending June 30, 2016. He advised that the findings of TGM's Independent Audit Report reveal that Worcester County's financial statements are both complete and accurate due to the exercising of tight internal controls, assuring that this required information remains compliant with generally accepted accounting principles.
 
Worcester County Government remains compliant with the internal policy requiring that a reserve fund be maintained at a level equal to 10% of budgeted annual General Fund expenditures.

Target Recalls Menorahs Due to Fire Hazard

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Target is recalling a Hanukkah menorah that it says may pose a fire hazard because it can melt while the candles are burning.

There have been eight reports of the product melting, including three reports of fire. No property damage or injuries have been reported.

About 2,600 units of the product — a clear acrylic menorah about 10.5 inches long, 1.2 inches wide and 2.3 inches high — are being recalled.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer singer, bassist and guitarist Greg Lake died yesterday (Dec. 7) after what the band's Facebook page describes as "a long and stubborn battle with cancer." He was 69.

Lake, who came to fame as the singer on King Crimson's first two albums, formed ELP in 1970 with drummer Carl Palmer and keyboardist Keith Emerson of the Nice. The group went on to become one of the most popular progressive rock bands of the '70s on the strength of their jazz and classical music-influenced compositions.

DoD Identifies Army Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel.

Sgt. First Class Allan E. Brown, 46, of Takoma Park, Maryland, died Dec. 6 at Walter Reed National Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, of injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device in Bagram, Afghanistan, that occurred on Nov. 12.

He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Also killed in the incident were:
Sgt. John W. Perry, 30, of Stockton, California, who died Nov. 12.

Pfc. Tyler R. Iubelt, 20, of Tamaroa, Illinois, who died Nov. 12.

Astronaut and former US Senator John Glenn dies at 95

John Glenn, the all-American astronaut and senator who rocketed into history on flights 36 years apart as the first American to orbit the Earth and the oldest person in space, died Thursday, Dec. 8 at age 95.

"We are saddened by the loss of Sen. John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth. A true American hero. Godspeed, John Glenn," NASA tweeted immediately after his death was anounced.

One officer dead, one critical in Americus, Georgia shooting; manhunt for suspect underway

AMERICUS, Ga. (WGXA) -- Two officers were shot, one fatally, in an incident in Americus Wednesday morning.

In a press conference at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Americus Police Chief Mark Scott said that one Americus police officer was killed and a Georgia Southwestern State University campus officer was injured.

Scott said the Americus Police Department received the call of a domestic dispute at an apartment complex near Georgia Southwestern at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. He said the Americus officer responded and the Georgia Southwestern campus officer went to the scene as backup.

He said the two officers were shot by the suspect, later identified as Minquell Kenney Lembrick, 32.

GIVING TUESDAY CAMPAIGN RAISES $88,000 ONLINE

More than $88,000 was raised during the Shore Gives More campaign for Giving Tuesday. Fifty-seven nonprofits participated in the one day online giving campaign, which was initiated by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.

"This year's 'Shore Gives More' campaign exceeded all our hopes and expectations through the generous support of donors. We are very fortunate to have such a giving and caring community," said Erica Joseph, CFES President.

The majority of the campaign donors were from Maryland and southern Delaware but donations also came from 17 other states. "It just goes to show you that you can leave the Eastern Shore, but the spirit of the shore never leaves your heart," said Joseph.

On the way to Florida, Obama's spokesman Josh Earnest said told reporters, "This is a speech that President Obama was prepared to give before the election." But at times, it didn't sound like it.

At one point, Obama reminded the troops "that each of us has...the universal right to speak your minds and to protest against authority; to live in a society that's open and free; that can criticize our president without retribution."

Md. girl who survived brutal dog attack wants to give back

WASHINGTON — About a year ago, an Anne Arundel County girl was fighting for her life after a vicious, unprovoked dog attack left her with deep bites, a fractured skull, a paralyzed arm and serious nerve damage.

Now, Katarina Parsons wants to help other kids who are battling serious health problems.

The attack happened the day before her sixth birthday at a family friend's home in Chesapeake, Virginia. She was bitten and dragged by two Belgian Malinois.

"Katarina shouldn't even be alive," said her mother, Sandy Parsons, who calls her Kat.

The young girl from Riva, Maryland, has endured numerous surgeries, including a 10-hour nerve transplant in April.

Incident: Assault
Date of Incident: 7 December 2016
Location: 300 E. College Avenue, Salisbury, MD
Suspect: Daquan P. Parks, 16, Fruitland, MD.
Narrative: On 7 December 2016 at 7:30 AM, a deputy responded to the main office of James M. Bennett High School for a reported disturbance. The deputy learned that one of the school's assistant principals was dealing with a 16 year old student named Daquan Parks. It was reported that Parks began arguing with the assistant principal and that escalated to a physical confrontation. It was alleged that Parks pushed the assistant principal back over the counter in the main office and began to choke her with both of Park's hands around her neck. The school principal immediately attempted to intervene to stop the assault at which point Parks began swinging at the principal, landing some punches including one to his head which knocked him to the ground. Parks, who was also knocked to the ground in the scuffle then got back on his feet and went after the assistant principal again, this time pinning her against the wall until additional help arrived and Parks was restrained.
Both the Assistant Principal and Principal suffered injury as a result of the assault by Parks.
The deputy placed Parks under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. Following an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Parks in the Detention Center in lieu of $20,000.00 bond.

Narrative: On Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at approximately 1948hrs [7:48p.m.], the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the Vintage Beer and Wine located at 610 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, Maryland in reference to an armed robbery with a firearm.
Deputies learned through their investigation, two suspects entered the business demanding money. One suspect brandished a handgun during the incident. Money was taken from the cash registers before the two suspects fled the area.
Both suspects were described as tall, thin build, wearing all black.

Narrative: On Monday, November 28, 2016 at approximately 2355HRS [11:55PM], deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office responded to the 1000 block of Pierce Avenue in Salisbury, Maryland, in reference to a robbery with a firearm of a local food delivery driver. The victim was approached by two black males who demanded his money, food and cell phone. One of the suspects brandished a handgun during the robbery and later struck the victim in the back of the head with the handgun prior to fleeing the area.
The Salisbury City Police Department assisted deputies with the search, to include a K-9 track. Both suspects were described as black males, 5'6", 120-140lbs, 18-21 years of age.

Incident: Assault, Marijuana Distribution, Shooting Incident
Date of Incident: July 24th, 2016
Location: Cherry Beach Park, 100 Cherry Beach Road, Sharptown, MD
Suspect: Mitchell Ray Dayton, 28 years old, Mardela Springs
Narrative: On 07/27/16 the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office received information about a robbery and shooting that had occurred at the Cherry Beach Park, located at 100 Cherry Beach Road, Sharptown, Wicomico County, MD 21861. Wicomico County detectives were contacted to further investigate this case.
Detectives learned the following information:
During the weekend of July 22-24, 2016 Jeffrey Oliver Whitten, Bryan Floyd Blake and Logan Thomas Littleton conspired to commit a robbery of subjects selling a large amount of marijuana. Whitten initiated the contact with a subject, later identified as Mitchell Ray Dayton, in reference to buying the marijuana. The parties agreed on a price, and planned to meet at Cherry Beach Park on July 24th, 2016 at approximately 9:00 PM.
Jeffrey Whitten, Bryan Blake and Logan Littleton traveled to Cherry Beach Park, in a vehicle, and met with a marijuana dealer. During the interaction between the parties involved, Logan Littleton and Bryan Blake displayed a shotgun and an Kalashnikov rifle in a threatening manner and then demanded the marijuana from the dealer, Mitchell Dayton. Dayton complied and gave a large bag of marijuana to Whitten, Blake and Littleton. Whitten, Blake and Littleton then attempted to flee the parking lot, as Dayton and Littleton exchanged gunfire. Nobody was injured during the volley of gunfire.
Detectives were able to interview all of the parties involved. On July 29th, 2016, detectives were able to locate and arrest Whitten. Whitten was then transferred to the Wicomico County Detention Center. On July 30th, 2016 arrest warrants were issued for Logan Littleton and Bryan Blake in relation to this case.
On August, 1st 2016, the Maryland State Police Apprehension Team was able to locate and arrest Logan Littleton and Bryan Blake, in the State of Delaware. Both Littleton and Blake were transferred to the Wicomico County Detention Center. Furthermore, the detectives were able to recover two of the firearms used in the robbery and are identified as shotgun and a Kalashnikov rifle.
On November 15, 2016, Mitchell Ray Dayton was arrested and charged in relation to this incident. Dayton was later released from the Wicomico County Detention Center on $50,000 bond. This case is closed and all parties have been identified.

Somali Refugees Arriving in U.S. at Highest Rate Ever

Somali refugees are arriving in the United States at the highest rate ever in the first two months of Fiscal Year 2017, according to the State Department's interactive website.

Between October 1, 2016, the beginning of the fiscal year, and December 7, 2016, a total of 2,775 Somali refugees have arrived in the United States.

That rate is more than thirty percent higher than the previous record during the same period of time during any of the fourteen most recent previous fiscal years, beginning in FY 2002. The State Department interactive website does not provide refugee arrival data prior to that time.

Since FY 2002, 100,246 Somali refugees have resettled in the United States, according to the State Department's interactive website. Of these, 99.9 percent, or 99,909, are Muslim.

The top five destination states for Somali refugees who arrived in the United States between FY 2002 and FY 2017 are Minnesota (16,052), Ohio (7,677), Texas (7,216), New York (6,408), and Arizona (5,819).

The top five destination states for Somali refugees who arrived in the United States between October 1, 2016 and December 7, 2016 are Minnesota (346), New York (300), Kentucky (187), Ohio (172), and Arizona (163).

United States Steel would like to accelerate its investments and hire back laid-off employees now that Donald Trump will be occupying the Oval Office, CEO Mario Longhi told CNBC on Wednesday.

"We already structured to do some things, but when you see in the near future improvement to the tax laws, improvements to regulation, those two things by themselves may be a significant driver to what we're going to do," he said in an interview with CNBC's "Power Lunch."

In addition, the belief that the U.S. economy can grow at least 3.5 percent also adds to what the company can do, Longhi noted.

"I'd be more than happy to bring back the employees we've been forced to lay off during that depressive period," he said, which could be close to 10,000 jobs.

Shares of the Pittsburgh-based company have soared about 80 percent since Trump's stunning victory on Nov. 8.

The jobless rate is down to 4.6 percent, and the growth rate is up above 2 percent or even 3 percent, with housing prices getting back to pre-recession levels. Stocks are soaring. So the idea seems to be that Obama has solved the problem in the nick of time.

"Obama's gift to Trump" is the headline on CNN. "Trump inherits healthy economy" is the way the Financial Times is headlining the yarn. Politico reckons that Trump is being handed an "Obama boom."

Attorneys challenge park service over inauguration protests

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Park Service is quashing dissent by blocking access to public space for those who want to demonstrate before, during and after President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, Washington civil rights attorneys said Wednesday.

Attorney Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund — who has successfully litigated on behalf of protesters in Washington for more than a decade — threatened legal action against the park service if it does not rescind a permit the agency itself took out to block groups from using land around the White House and the National Mall for demonstrations.

The park service historically reserves space for use by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, but Verheyden-Hilliard said the denial of protest permits has gone too far this time and is unconstitutional.

"This is public land. This land belongs to all of us. The park service's role is only to act as a neutral administrator and steward of public land," she said. "They have done a massive land grab to the detriment of all those who want to engage in free speech activities."

Boeing finds out new president won't just pay whatever defense contractors want

Defense contractors were pretty excited when Donald Trump won the election, figuring it was fat and happy time once again for defense spending. And if happy time means the Pentagon will once again be willing to fund what the nation needs for its defense, then there should indeed by plenty of smiles to go around.

As for the fat part, defense contractors are used to the idea that cost overruns are no issue with the Pentagon because whatever they order they have to have, and have right away. The cost-is-no-object approach to national security is understandable in a certain sense, but when contractors know they can go hog wild with no consequences . . . well, they're going to go hog wild. Frequently.

It doesn't look like Trump intends to play that game, not even with his own aircraft. A standing order with Boeing calls for the development of a new Air Force One, and the word has gotten to Trump that the cost of the plane has risen to as high as $4 billion. Regardless of how much a new Air Force One may be needed, Trump made it clear that he will cancel the contract entirely before he pays that:

Michael McCaul calls for end of ‘politically correct’ U.S. homeland security policies

The incoming Trump administration has opened the door for congressional defense hawks to roll back the damage caused by the Obama administration's "politically correct" policies to defend the United States against terrorist threats, a senior House Republican said Wednesday.

This new, hard-line policy to homeland security and national defense unveiled by House Committee on Homeland Security chairman, Rep. Michael McCaul, will "reverse the damage of the last eight years," the Texas Republican said.

Mr. McCaul took direct aim at President Obama's "politically correct" attempts to counter extremist groups like Islamic State and al Qaeda who are actively recruiting fighters and plotting attacks against the U.S. and its western allies.

The White House has actively refrained from using the phrase "radical Islamic terrorism" and lambasted GOP hawks for attempting to paint all Muslims as sympathetic to such extremist views.

With President-elect Donald Trump poised to assume the Oval Office next month, the time is now to impart "the biggest domestic counterterrorism overhaul in decades," Mr. McCaul said.

His plan would include the "immediate suspension of all immigration from high-risk areas" such as Syria, Iraq, Yemen and elsewhere, while pressuring the European Union to take similar measures.

'Whole agenda is to discredit Donald Trump and his duly legal election'

Legal challenges and hand-counting of ballots are daily occurrences in Michigan, and the head of an anti-Hillary Clinton political action committee says the former Democratic Party nominee is deeply involved in an effort to give the perception Donald Trump's victory is illegitimate while Green Party candidate Jill Stein is just in it for herself.

The courts have been back and forth on the issue. After Stein pressed the issue in court, federal judge Mark Goldsmith ordered the recount to begin on Monday, despite Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette trying to stop the process. The state is arguing that since Stein has no chance of winning, she has no standing to make the request.

On Tuesday, the Michigan Court of Appeals agreed with Schuette and ordered the recount to be stopped. However, a three-judge panel of the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that the recount ought to continue. The various parties were arguing the case again before Goldsmith on Wednesday morning.

After all 83 Michigan counties certified their vote totals last month, the Michigan Board of Canvassers declared the winner of the state's 16 electoral votes by a 10,704 vote margin. Stein successfully triggered a recount in neighboring Wisconsin, where Trump leads by roughly 22,000 votes, and Pennsylvania, where the margin is more than twice the spread in Wisconsin.

I was reminded this week of 1980, when my father — who was the founder of a national organization representing the interests of Hispanic business owners — got involved with the presidential election in order to support Ronald Reagan.

My dad had been told by his friends that because he was Hispanic he needed to support the Democratic candidate for president. But while he was, of course, proud of his Mexican heritage, my father did not make decisions based on his identity as "Hispanic." First and foremost, he identified as a business owner and he knew that his philosophy for his business and community were more in line with Ronald Reagan: smaller government, freedom, effective national security, and personal responsibility.

Indeed, my father's philosophy and Reagan's were very much aligned. Once he was president, Reagan sought my father's council both as an entrepreneur and as a Hispanic leader. The two men didn't always agree, but they discussed their differences and learned from one other.

Who will Donald Trump turn to in the Hispanic community? Will Mr. Trump's administration actively engage with Hispanic associations and interest groups? If so, which ones, and to discuss which issues? Thanks to some memorable flash points during the 2016 presidential campaign, there will be great interest in the answers to these questions and the Trump team will have to proceed with as much caution as enthusiasm.

Mikulski Closes Out 40 Years In Elected Office

Sen. Barbara Mikulski officially closes out her four decades in elected office on Jan. 3. But on Wednesday, the body's longest serving woman gave her farewell address on the Senate floor.

"More than half of my life has been in elected public service, but at the same time, all of my life has been focused on service," said the 80-year-old Baltimore native. "You know when people vote for you, it's not that they're sending you to Washington, they're sending you to City Hall. They're giving you their vote of confidence...that you will be on their side, that they will be on your side."

Before her five years on the City Council, 10 years in the House of Representatives and 30 years in the U.S. Senate, Mikulski was a community organizer, working with residents in Fells Point and Rosemont to block a massive highway project that would have seen neighbors divided and homes demolished.

"We defied the odds and that's how I came into office, a champion on behalf of the people," Mikulski said.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Students at Oakland Mills High School held a protest Wednesday over how administrators handled a racist social media post.

Some say they're scared and want more information about whether the student who made the post will be allowed back on campus.

The Howard County superintendent says the law prohibits her from revealing the student's punishment but that it's important for students to stand up against racism after several incidents across Howard County this year.

Student demonstrators live-streamed the walk out at the high school in Columbia. Saying they felt threatened after a fellow student posted a message using the n-word online. They demanded transparency about whether he would be allowed back in class.

Three teenage girls were arrested this week in connection with the alleged anti-white assault of four schoolgirls on a Bronx bus — just as the victims' families notified the city of their intent to sue for emotional and physical damages, according to police and the schoolgirls' lawyer.

Miracle and Mollychi Rattray, 17 and 16 respectively, and a 15-year-old girl whose name was not released were arrested Monday and charged with gang assault in the Nov. 22 attack, cops said.

The incident happened as the four girls, 10th graders at St. Catharine's Academy in Pelham Gardens, were riding an MTA bus home in the direction of Throggs Neck, the girls told the Post.

At first, two black boys on the bus started taunting them, but then the boys called a group of female friends who joined them on the bus and physically attacked the white girls, they said.

Woman Plans Equal Protection Lawsuit If No Resolution With Berlin

BERLIN – The local woman threatened with arrest for sitting on a picnic table at Henry Park is now seeking relief through the legal system.

Ronshell Shockley, the woman confronted by a police officer for not sitting correctly at a picnic table, plans to file a $75,000 lawsuit if she and the Town of Berlin don't come to a resolution by Jan. 15. According to Luke Rommel, her attorney, if the matter is not resolved by then he'll file an equal protection claim in federal court.

"Initially, we were hoping for a simple apology," Rommel said. "That never happened. At this point, there would be a small monetary component required to resolve the dispute. The money would be mainly symbolic; no one has any intention of 'getting rich' off this case, but we feel there should be a deterrent component to this so it does not happen again."

On June 30, Shockley and her husband were at Henry Park watching their son's basketball game. She was sitting on top of a picnic table when she was approached by Lt. Jeffrey Lawson of the Berlin Police Department. He told her she was sitting on the bench wrong and when her husband questioned the officer's behavior, they were told to leave.

Boston College Faculty Want to Ban Trump-Inspired ‘Hate Speech’

In response to Donald Trump's victory in November's presidential election, nearly 50 faculty members at Boston College have signed a letter demanding that the university ban all forms of "hate speech."

A letter signed by almost 50 Boston College faculty members condemns Donald Trump for failing to address the hate crimes "that his campaign emboldened." They also condemn Trump for failing to apologize for the remarks he made about sexually assaulting women.

The letter opens: "In the wake of the presidential election, we as faculty at Boston College declare our unequivocal opposition to racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and all forms of identity-based hatred and discrimination on and off this campus."

The letter calls for the University to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against hate speech: "In this spirit, we call on the Boston College administration to immediately adopt a zero-tolerance policy against hate speech."

Hyattsville unanimously passes non-citizen voting

HYATTSVILLE – A two-year debate, filled with passion on both sides, has finally come to a conclusion after Hyattsville's City Council unanimously voted to allow non-United States citizens to vote in municipal elections.

The city of Hyattsville is the first municipality in Prince George's County and one of the first in Maryland to extend voting rights to non-citizens who live within city limits.

"It was a pretty surprising turnout to see that everybody voted for it. Aside from all the bickering that we had or the animosity we expressed before, to see everybody come around and support the motion speaks loudly to what the city is about and also the way this council works," said Edouard Haba, one of the four motion-makers for the non-citizen voting amendment.

The approximately 65 million Democrats who voted for Hillary Clinton should pledge that in the future if a Republican wins the presidency with fewer votes than a Democrat for the third time in our era, we won't pay taxes to the federal government. No taxation without representation!

Twice in the past 16 years, a Republican candidate who finished second in the popular vote has won the presidency. This year, Donald Trump won the electoral vote with about 46% of the popular vote, while Hillary Clinton received about 48%. If the parties stay this evenly divided, another electoral mishap is more likely than not in the next 20 years.

Governor Larry Hogan Announces Common Sense Paid Sick Leave Legislation

Balanced Approach Will Benefit Maryland Workers and Job Creators

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today announced plans to introduce legislation in the upcoming session of the Maryland General Assembly to provide common sense, balanced paid sick leave benefits that have the potential to cover nearly all working Marylanders without placing an unmanageable burden on job creators. During his remarks at a State House press conference, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to common sense policies that will make Maryland a more business-friendly state while ensuring a strong and healthy workforce.

"For the last few years, there has been a great deal of discussion and debate around the issue of paid sick leave in Maryland," said Governor Hogan. "While all of us agree that more workers need sick leave in Maryland, it would be irresponsible to put a law on the books that unfairly penalizes our state's job creators. It is clear that, in order to move forward, we must strike a balance between the needs of Maryland's employees while not hurting our small businesses and continuing to foster a more business-friendly climate in our state.

"A strong majority of Marylanders want to see the state address this issue in a common sense way that benefits our workers while also protecting our small business job creators. We look forward to working with legislators on both sides of the aisle to reach an agreement on a balanced, fair, and common sense approach to paid sick leave."

The Hogan administration's proposal contains important provisions to protect Maryland's small business community. Businesses with 50 or more employees will be required to offer paid sick leave totaling at least 40 hours per year, with the ability for employees to roll over a maximum of 40 hours each year. The proposal also calls for part-time employees to be covered after a minimum of 30 working hours. If a company already has a general leave policy that meets these minimum requirements, the state will not interfere. In addition, the state will honor existing collective bargaining agreements with unions. The 50-employee threshold matches current federal standards under the Family Medical Leave Act and the Affordable Care Act.

Maryland small business job creators with fewer than 50 employees that choose to offer paid sick leave will be eligible for tax relief incentives closely modeled after the top recommendation of the Augustine Commission, a bipartisan panel that identified strategies to improve Maryland's business climate. These small business owners will be able to exempt the first $20,000 of their income from taxes. The legislation will also provide protection for seasonal industries by exempting workers employed for less than 120 days in a 12-month period.

Governor Hogan is committed to giving Maryland workers the support they need without interfering with the policies of small businesses or putting jobs at risk. The Hogan administration's common sense proposal would institute a fair and flexible statewide policy that would apply to all 24 jurisdictions and supersede existing policies to ensure consistency and ease of compliance for job creators across the state.

Congressman Harris: Federal Immigration Law Must be Enforced

WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) introduced the Federal Immigration Law Compliance Act of 2016 (FILCA) in the House, with co-sponsors from California to New York to Florida. FILCA requires any entity receiving federal funds, including institutions of higher learning, to comply with all lawful requests made by federal immigration enforcement authorities. Should the entity refuse to comply with federal immigration enforcement requests that entity will be subject to a withholding of all federal funding.

"Congress has the responsibility to protect the rule of law in our country and provide for the safety of our citizens. We need to focus on protecting American citizens and those who are in this country legally, instead of providing shelter for those who have violated our immigration law and entered this country illegally. If any entity refuses to comply with federal immigration law, they should be denied federal money until they come into compliance," said Congressman Harris.

FILCA also explicitly authorizes federal immigration authorities to make requests for information regarding illegal immigrants of any institution or entity receiving federal funds. Additionally, in the case of state or local law enforcement in custody of an illegal alien, the bill explicitly authorizes federal officials to request that the state or local authority retain custody until the federal authorities can assume custody of that illegal alien.

"The American people have spoken loudly in this past election that they want federal immigration law enforced," added Congressman Harris.
