First Black NASA Administrator Charles Bolden 'Pleaded' To Get Into Naval Academy

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:00 PM PST

It was Nov. 23, 1963, the night after President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Charles Bolden was a high school senior, playing in the South Carolina state football championship game. He was mourning Kennedy's death along with the rest of the country, but he was mourning something else as well.

"I saw my chances of going to the Naval Academy kind of evaporating," he said in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition, more than 50 years later.

But Bolden did make it to the Naval Academy. He went on to serve in the Marine Corps as an aviator, flying more than 100 combat missions in North and South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia in the early 1970s. Bolden later became a NASA astronaut and traveled to orbit four times aboard the space shuttle. After his last space flight, he returned to the Marine Corps and achieved the rank of major general. Then in 2009, he was appointed the administrator of NASA, the first African American to hold the office.

But that first critical step of attending the Naval Academy almost didn't happen, Bolden says, when his state representatives would not nominate him for consideration because he was black. One of South Carolina's senators at the time, Strom Thurmond, flatly rejected Bolden's request.

"[He] told me, 'No way are you going to get an appointment from me to go to the Naval Academy,'" Bolden says. "It was clear why they were not supporting me and it was because of the times. They were just not about to appoint a black to the Naval Academy or to any Academy."

Bill Clinton: If I Wasn't Married to Hillary, 'I Could Say What I Think'

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 08:00 PM PST

Former President Bill Clinton told a crowd of his wife's supporters he sometimes wishes they weren't married — because then he could say whatever he wants.

"Sometimes when I am on a stage like this, I wish that we weren't married," the former president said in New Hampshire on Monday night, according to the New York Daily News, referring to the tweet of a journalist on the scene.

"Then I could say what I think."

Congress Gives Final OK To Banning Local Internet Taxes

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 07:30 PM PST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress voted Thursday to permanently bar state and local governments from taxing access to the Internet, as lawmakers leapt at an election-year chance to demonstrate their opposition to imposing levies on online service.

On a vote of 75-20, the Senate gave final congressional approval to the wide-ranging bill, which would also revamp trade laws. President Barack Obama is expected to sign it.

"The Internet is a resource used daily by Americans of all ages," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who brokered an agreement with a Democratic leader earlier this week that helped clear the way for passage. "It's important that they be able to do all of this without the worry of their Internet access being taxed."

Did Donald Trump Call Ted Cruz A “Pussy?”

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 07:00 PM PST

SORT OF …

We've reached the point in the 2016 "Republican" presidential campaign where pretty much anything goes … especially if your name is Donald Trump.

Which is a good thing, in our opinion …

Among the forces fueling Trump's front-running, anti-establishment candidacy is his not-so-thinly-veiled contempt for political correctness – the sort of whiny, "stay out of my safe space" bitching and moaning that hypocritical politicians like to invoke when it serves their needs.

Trump's disdain for the PC police was on display again this week in New Hampshire, when one of his rallies was interrupted by a woman who referred to his closest competitor – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas – as a "pussy."

"She just said a terrible thing," Trump said, pretending to be offended.

"Shout it out, because I don't want to … I never expect to hear that from you again!" he yelled, breaking into a wide grin.

What did the woman say about Cruz?

College Student Publicly Threatens to ‘Smash This B***h’s Computer’ Over Trump Sticker — When She Sees His Tweet, Things Get Nasty

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:30 PM PST

A St. John's University student threatened to smash a fellow student's laptop because it displayed a Donald Trump campaign sticker — and now the victim apparently fears for her safety.

The student who made the threat — Clifford Durand, 18, according to the New York Daily News — posted a photo of the student and her laptop affixed with a "Trump: Make America Great Again" sticker during what appeared to be a class Wednesday morning.

The post from the now-suspended account read, "7000 retweets and i'll smash this b***h's computer." The Daily News reported the post was retweeted 16,000 times within four hours — although Durand's friends claimed it was a joke.

A Viewer Believes Sheriff Mike Lewis Has Gone Too Far

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:06 PM PST

I saw the official comment from Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis regarding the tragic deaths of two Harford County Sheriff's Deputies. In light of this comment, I would respectfully request the following:

Mike, please stay out of this. This matter does not pertain to you. Allow the families, the Harford County Community, and the Sheriff's Department to grieve and mourn their losses. You do not need to get involved, nor should you. More importantly, this is not the time to make an unsolicited political statement. Your political views are already well documented and known. My humble advice is to place the political vendetta on hold and get back to the job you are paid to do.

Respectfully,

A Resident of Wicomico County

Tonight, I sit here in disbelief over the senseless executions of two MD Sheriff's Deputies earlier today. These deputies, both veterans of the Harford County Sheriff's Office, were gunned down by a convicted felon, armed with a handgun, and wanted on warrants in two states. Please pray for these brave men and their families as Sheriff Jeff Gahler prepares to bury these husbands, brothers, sonsand daddies. Please continue to pray for them.

Yes, each law enforcement officer volunteered for this job. Yes, we knew the dangers of this job. But, what we didn't know is that the left-leaning liberal lawmakers in Annapolis would turn their backs on the very ones who are sworn to protect them and their families. Serving as co-chair of our legislative committee, I've had a front row seat to proposed legislation being introduced this year which severely limits our ability to do our jobs. To add insult to injury, earlier this week, Maryland's democratically controlled legislature voted to override Governor Hogan's veto restoring convicted felons' immediate voting rights, even before they've successfully completed their parole and probation. Why? So the democrats will have the desired results in both local and state elections. As a result, It is now predicted that in just a few weeks, at least twenty thousand of those convicted felons will vote for a new Baltimore Mayor.

God Bless the United States of America!!!!

The retailer announced on Tuesday that it planned to "accelerate" the closing of at least 50 "unprofitable stores."

Sears, which also owns Kmart, originally planned to close the stores over the next few months, but poor sales have sped up the timeline.

In its earnings report Tuesday, Sears said it expects total revenue to hit $7.3 billion for the fourth quarter -- down from $8.1 billion last year.

OCEAN CITY — The Performing Arts Center could see an expansion of the number and quality of concerts over the next two years after town officials this week approved a cost-sharing contract with a popular special events promoter in the resort.

The Mayor and Council on Tuesday agreed to enter a Memorandum of Understanding with Special Event Productions-TEAM Productions and Bob Rothermel to pool resources on drawing more concerts to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in the Roland E. Powell Convention Center. Under the terms of the MOU approved on Tuesday, the Town of Ocean City will provide $40,000 in each of the next two years to bring two concerts to the PAC in fiscal year 2016 and four in fiscal year 2017.

Through the contract, Rothermel and TEAM Productions will supply the talent-buying and event management services and Ocean City will provide the funding to bring as many as six significant concert events to the PAC by the end of fiscal year 2017, including two as soon as the end of this June. In simplest terms, the MOU hopes to take advantage of Rothermel's expertise on drawing major acts to the PAC in a partnership that allows both parties to share in the profits of the events.

Halfway around the world, Virginia Beach WWII vet reunites with long-lost sweetheart

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 04:30 PM PST

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA

Together again, at last.

It was a hot, dry morning on the southern coast of Australia when Norwood Thomas and his son, Steve, reached their destination halfway around the world.

After 70 years – and four flights, including one 16-hour marathon over the Pacific – the 93-year-old Army veteran from Virginia Beach was about to see his long-lost World War II sweetheart.

He and his son finished the final leg at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, Adelaide time – 15½ hours ahead of the clocks back home.

Weary but grinning, they climbed into a waiting vehicle and drove to a beachfront hotel, where 88-year-old Joyce Durrant Morris was waiting.

Maryland State Police Remind Motorists to Use Caution As Arctic Temperatures Move In

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 04:29 PM PST

(PIKESVILLE, MD)— Troopers are urging drivers to use caution and to think twice before heading out during this expected blast of cold weather across the state.

Colonel William M. Pallozzi, Superintendent of the Maryland State Police, has ordered all troopers to be on high alert for disabled vehicles with the anticipated extremely low temperatures. Troopers, along with the State Highway Administration's Coordinated Highway Action Response Team, (CHART), will combine their efforts to assist disabled motorists as quickly as possible.

With cold weather advisories across the state and weather forecasters predicting bone chilling temperatures, state troopers are reminding motorists to make sure their vehicles are prepared and properly equipped. Keeping a survival bag in their car is encouraged. The survival bag should include a blanket, a flashlight (with batteries) or flares, jumper cables, an extra bottle of antifreeze and windshield washer fluid.

The cold weather can take its toll on a vehicle, so check the following before traveling:
  • Check the tire pressure and tread
  • Check the battery
  • Check the car's fluid levels
  • Make sure you have a good spare tire
  • Keep jumper cables handy
Drivers are reminded their cell phones can be used to call 9-1-1 in emergencies or #77. Additional personnel have been reassigned to assist with road patrol duties to supplement regular patrol forces across the state.

More Drivers Falling Behind on their Car Payments

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 04:00 PM PST

More people are falling at least two months behind in making payments on their auto loan, a new report showed Tuesday.

As more borrowers have qualified for loans amid higher national employment rates, and with new-car sales booming as a result, the total amount of auto loan debt climbed to $987 million in the fourth quarter, up 11.5% from the same quarter in the previous year, reports Experian Automotive. The credit-reporting service says that the total is the highest since it began keeping track in 2006.

Along with the rising auto loan tallies has come growth in serious delinquencies. The percentage of people who are at least 60 days behind on their payments rose to 0.77%, up from 0.72% in the same period in 2014. Experian says it's still short of a record. Sixty-day delinquencies reached 0.94% in 2009.

And the rate of those who are 30 days behind on payments fell in last year's fourth quarter to 2.57%, down from 2.62%

Hey Albero, The Weather Reports Are Going To Get Better

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 03:46 PM PST

Tonight, Dan spent a good bit of time explaining how the new weather system they plan on using down the road will be "revolutionary".

While much of what he said will change are basically graphics, I'm confident WBOC will continue to claim we live in a very unique area where weather is unpredictable. Time will tell. That is, when and if that new system ever comes about.

Clearly their tails are between their legs right now because quite frankly, they've been screwing up for far too many years. Now that they are being called out and now that they know they have a competitor who is going to call them out, something has to be done because I have not been wrong. They also know that when a Blogger can do a better job calling out the serious weather threats, their viewers are losing TRUST and who can blame them.

They also started the show tonight saying. "Dan said it was going to be like this," cold. OMG, you guys can't be serious, right? You said yesterday and the day before that no snow would stick to the roads and look what happened, (below). Yeah, it's cold outside, thanks Dan.

Son Of Deceased Suspect In Shooting Of The Two Harford County Deputies Speaks Out

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 03:30 PM PST

Two Harford County Sheriff's deputies have succumbed to their injuries after shootings at an Abingdon Panera Bread, officials said.

The deputies, one a 30-year veteran and the other a 16-year veteran, were killed in a standoff and pursuit that began at 11:46 a.m., when deputies were called to the Panera Bread in the 3400 block of Merchant Boulevard. One deputy was shot when confronting the suspect in the rear of the restaurant, and the other was shot during the pursuit. At least two--not the deputies who were killed--opened fire on the shooter.

The alleged gunman, who was killed in a pursuit, was identified as David Brian Evans, a 67-year-old white male. Evans had an outstanding warrant in Florida, and a civil court warrant in Harford County.

Jeremy Evans, David Evans estranged son, spoke with WBAL-TV's lead I-Team reporter Jayne Miller. Jeremy Evans told Miller that his father shot his mother in a domestic incident 20 years ago.

Surround Israel With Barrier ‘To Defend Ourselves Against Wild Beasts’

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 03:00 PM PST

TEL AVIV – In sentiments that seem to echo one of the main policy aims of Donald Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday he is working to surround the entire country with fences and barriers "to defend ourselves against wild beasts" that surround the Jewish state.

Netanyahu made the comments during a tour of a barrier being erected on the country's eastern border with Jordan.

"We are preparing a multi-year project to encircle Israel with a security fence, to defend ourselves in the Middle East as it is now, and as it is expected to be," Netanyahu stated.

"At the end, in the State of Israel, as I see it, there will be a fence that spans it all," said Netanyahu. "I'll be told, 'This is what you want, to protect the villa?' The answer is yes.

Will we surround all of the State of Israel with fences and barriers? The answer is yes. In the area that we live in, we must defend ourselves against the wild beasts."

He said the plan would take several years to complete and that besides the fence around the country his government will also work to close the breaches in the security barrier that straddles the West Bank.

"This thing costs many billions, and we're working on a multi-year plan of prioritization so it would be spread out over years in order to gradually build it, but to complete it to defend the State of Israel," Netanyahu added.

Supreme Court Puts Obama's Power Plant Regs On Hold

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST

A divided Supreme Court on Tuesday abruptly halted President Obama's controversial new power plant regulations, dealing a blow to the administration's sweeping plan to address global warming.

In a 5-4 decision, the court halted enforcement of the plan until after legal challenges are resolved.

The surprising move is a victory for the coalition of 27 mostly Republican-led states and industry opponents that call the regulations "an unprecedented power grab."

By temporarily freezing the rule the high court's order signals that opponents have made a strong argument against the plan. A federal appeals court last month refused to put it on hold.

The court's four liberal justices said they would have denied the request.

Fear Not, My Secular Friends

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 01:00 PM PST

It amuses me that certain people are convinced that Christians are angry scolds but totally miss the humorlessness and angst of certain Christ-ophobic secularists.

When I wrote the book "Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity," secularists panned the notion that Christians, being in the majority, could be the subjects of systematic discrimination. I found that an odd argument, especially from people who routinely argued that women are victims of gender discrimination.

Their argument may have a superficial attraction, but it does not square with the evidence. I marshaled 400 pages of proof to substantiate my case. Since the time the book was published in 2005 this pattern of discrimination and mistreatment of Christians has continued unabated. I could write an update with twice as many pages.

Our universities are teeming with atheist professors, many of whom express their antipathy toward Christianity as anti-science, superstitious, bigoted, and Neanderthal. The same message permeates our culture, from Hollywood to popular music to the mainstream liberal media.

President Barack Obama himself, while touting his authentic Christianity, doesn't miss an opportunity to ridicule Christians as Bible-toting bitter-clingers whose Scripture contains many horrific divine commands and whose ancestors during the Crusades were every bit as evil as modern Islamic jihadists. He has also gone out of his way to promote the very secular cause of abortion-on-demand and to trample the conscience rights of faith-based institutions.

Yet with all this "progress," the appetite of militant secularists cannot be satiated. The most recent example is an editorial by Susan Jacoby in The New York Times, "Sick and Tired of 'God Bless America.'"

ISSA: FBI WANTS HILLARY, HUMA PROSECUTED IN 'SLAM DUNK' CASE

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 12:51 PM PST

'Director would like to indict Clinton and Abedin'

California Rep. Darrell Issa says the FBI has a "slam dunk" case against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and senior aide Huma Abedin that it's itching to prosecute.

The former House Oversight chairman's statement on Friday comes just days after former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said his contacts in the agency will "blow the whistle and go public" if Attorney General Loretta Lynch does not prosecute.
"I think the FBI director would like to indict both Huma and Hillary as we speak," Issa said at Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's New Hampshire campaign headquarters on Thursday, the Washington Examiner reported. "I think he's in a position where he's being forced to triple-time make a case of what would otherwise be, what they call, a slam dunk."

'HILLARY FOR PROSECUTION, NOT PRESIDENT'

New campaign to stop her combines investigative journalism, legal action

WASHINGTON –
With the possibility fading of Barack Obama's Justice Department prosecuting the inevitable Democratic Party presidential nominee, a new independent campaign has arisen to expose Hillary Clinton's criminal actions and prosecute her at the state level.

It's called the Hillary Clinton Investigative Justice Project, and it was conceived by two veteran investigative journalists who plan to take their findings to state attorneys general in jurisdictions in which the nonprofit, tax-exempt Clinton Family Foundation does business.

"The Clinton Family Foundation is effectively a criminal, money-laundering operation principally established to enrich the founders with political payoff money, including millions from foreign donors," said Joseph Farah, founder and chief executive officer of WND. "It's a racketeering enterprise protected by the Democratic Party dons – including the president of the United States and his attorney general."

BREAKING NEWS: CLINTON FOUNDATION SUBPOENAED, HUMA IN CROSSHAIRS

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 12:46 PM PST

Hillary camp silent on State Department investigation

State Department investigators subpoenaed the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation last fall and made sure to include former "special government employee" Huma Abedin in their crosshairs.

State IG spokesman and representatives of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign had no comment for the Washington Post after its story broke Thursday afternoon. At issue are projects the organization engaged in that may have required approval from the federal government prior to going forward.

The 'Stop Hillary' campaign is on fire! Join the surging response to this theme: 'Clinton for prosecution, not president'

News of the subpoena further undercuts the Democrat candidate's repeated claims that she never violated a subsection of the Espionage Act related to "gross negligence" in handling government documents during her time as President Obama's secretary of state. Clinton said just one week ago she was "100 percent confident" the FBI's investigation into her "home brew" email server would turn up no wrongdoing on her part.

Agents are also trying to determine whether co-mingling of the Clinton Foundation and State Department business violated public corruption laws.

Williams: Sloppy Language and Thinking

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST

George Orwell said, "But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought." Gore Vidal elaborated on that insight, saying, "As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate." And John Milton predicted, "When language in common use in any country becomes irregular and depraved, it is followed by their ruin and degradation."

These observations bear heeding about how sloppy language is corrupting our society.

The Atlantic magazine reported that public schools are nearly as segregated in 2012 as they were in the late 1960s. An Education Next series commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Coleman Report includes an article by Steven Rivkin, "Desegregation Since the Coleman Report," that holds that American schools are still segregated. In 2001, Harvard University's Civil Rights Project press release stated, "Almost half a century after the U.S. Supreme Court concluded that Southern school segregation was unconstitutional and 'inherently unequal' ... racial and ethnic segregation continued to intensify throughout the 1990s."

Let's examine the term "racial segregation." Blacks are about 50 percent of the Washington, D.C., population. Reagan National Airport serves the Washington, D.C., area and, like every airport, it has water fountains. At no time is there anything close to blacks being 50 percent of water fountain users. Suppose it turns out that only 15 percent of the water fountain users are black.

Would the scholars, whose studies say that schools are segregated because of racial differences in attendance, condemn Reagan National Airport water fountains as being segregated? Would they propose bussing blacks in from water fountains in southeast D.C. in order to integrate the Reagan National Airport water fountains?

Governor Larry Hogan Submits Second Supplemental Budget

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 11:44 AM PST

Reflects Administration's Commitment to Deliver $75 Million for Project C.O.R.E. and Blight Elimination in Baltimore City

ANNAPOLIS, MD –
Governor Larry Hogan today introduced a second supplemental budget for FY 2017 that provides $18 million to support the implementation of Project C.O.R.E., Creating Opportunities for Renewal and Enterprise. This four-year initiative, announced last month, is in partnership with Baltimore City and the Maryland Stadium Authority and will systemically address blight in city neighborhoods.

Throughout the four-year partnership, total funding for the demolition portion of Project C.O.R.E includes $75 million from the state operating budget and in-kind administrative services from Baltimore City, equivalent to $1 for every $4 allocated by the state.

"This historic multi-year partnership between the state and city to immediately begin the process of demolishing thousands of empty, decaying buildings throughout the city has the potential to deliver lasting change and will pave the way for private sector investment," said Governor Hogan. "The state's commitment to provide $75 million over four years for demolition is part of a bipartisan, common-sense effort that will help to make sure Baltimore's future is better and brighter than its present or its past."

Under Project C.O.R.E., the elimination of blighted portions of the city will be further supported by more than $600 million in financing opportunities over the next four years from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to encourage private sector developers to revitalize Baltimore's neighborhoods through housing and commercial investments. Financing for development projects will be made through a range of innovative programs and partnerships, including the Rental Assistance Demonstration program and the issuance of revenue bonds.

Also included in the governor's supplemental budget is $3.5 million in strategic demolition funds to address blight and lack of investment in Maryland's small towns and older suburbs in order to make way for new private investment in local redevelopment and revitalization.

Along with Project C.O.R.E funding, Governor Hogan's second supplemental budget for FY 2017 also includes $3 million for the Maryland Early Graduation Scholarship Program, an initiative that allows eligible students who finish high school to receive a one-time scholarship of up to $6,000 for tuition and expenses at any approved postsecondary educational institution in Maryland.

Also included in the supplemental is nearly $2.3 million for a 2 percent rate increase for providers of substance abuse service for the uninsured, additional funding to support heroin-related criminal investigations, and $11 million for a Watershed Implementation Plan at the Maryland Department of Transportation.

House Border Security Caucus: Obama Not Allowing Agents to Do Their Job, ‘Putting Every American at Risk’

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 11:00 AM PST

(CNSNews.com) – Members of the Congressional Border Security Caucus visited the Rio Grande Valley, Texas sector of the U.S.-Mexico border last week and issued a press release expressing concern about border insecurity, the continued influx of unaccompanied alien children (UACs) and families, and policies put in place by the Obama administration that hinder Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents and encourage illegal immigration.

"To be here and see firsthand, to talk to the agents face-to-face, it is clear the administration is not giving agents the tools they need to do their job effectively and safely," said Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) about the tour, noting that those breaking federal immigration laws are not being prosecuted by the Obama Justice Department.

"Border security should be a top priority for this president, but is not," Farenthold said. "The president is not allowing our Border Patrol agents to do their job and that is putting every American at risk."

"Today we had the opportunity to see firsthand the challenges our border patrol agents and Texas Department of Public Safety officers face as they deal with the continuing surge of illegal immigrants on our Southern border," said Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), who created the caucus in 2014. "Their jobs have been made harder by this administration's policies that have undermined our immigration laws and continue to encourage illegal immigrants."

According to CBP statistics, the number of unaccompanied alien children (ages 0-17) entering the United States is up 102 percent in fiscal year 2016 (Oct. 1, 2015 to Jan. 31, 2016) compared to the same period in fiscal year 2015 – 10,105 and 20,455 respectively.

Judge Orders State Dept. To Speed Up Clinton Emails

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST

A federal judge told the State Department to speed up the final release of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's emails, saying the voting public has an interest in seeing them as the primaries are underway.

Judge Rudolph Contreras said the government is taking an "unreasonably long" time processing the messages and is already more than a week overdue on making them all public — and said he didn't like being told speeding up could hurt national security.

"Government has me between a rock and a hard place," he said.

The judge said he will order at least some emails to be released by Feb. 18, and showed little patience with the department's delays.

Satellites Suggest Iran Hid Atomic Activities Amid Nuclear Deal Talks

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:45 AM PST

Recently released satellite images of Iran's top-secret military complex suggest that the Islamic Republic was engaged in efforts to hide its atomic program-related work from the past while nuclear deal negotiations were ongoing.

The satellite photos of Iran's top-secret Parchin military site, located an estimated 20 miles southeast of Tehran, were obtained by private intelligence firm Stratfor.

Stratfor analyst Sim Tack spoke to the Daily Beast about the series of images taken from space.

"We're not saying they're cheating on the nuclear deal," he said, adding, "The images show Iran was going through the motions to hide what it's done before, and it is still … developing facilities that the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] may or may not have access to."

Tack reportedly indicated that "the progression of satellite images tracking construction at Parchin from 2012 to 2015 show how Iran's leaders apparently worked to keep regime hardliners happy by moving forward with weapons programs, even as the leadership worked to erase signs of an illegal nuclear weapons program."

He described the construction of a tunnel entrance to the military complex as new information. Stratfor says the images reveal that Iran is digging a tunnel into a heavily guarded mountain complex inside the Parchin facility.

"A 2014 image Stratfor did not release showed construction equipment outside tunnel entrance," reports the Daily Beast, adding, "The mysterious subterranean complex could be part of Iran's ballistic missile program that triggered new U.S. sanctions in January, even as the nuclear sanctions were being lifted."

"They were still going forward with that construction during the talks," said Tack.

In light of his account being suspended multiple times by YouTube, popular gun video creator "Hickok45″ has found a new, more accepting home for his content.

The extremely popular, Tennessee-based video creator has decided to join Full30.com, along with many of the Internet's other top gun enthusiasts.

According to the Full30 website, the video platform "is dedicated to providing shooting enthusiasts with quality content and a friendly community." They host videos on topics ranging from sport shooting to self-defense to what Hickok45 is best known for: gun reviews.

Maryland lawmakers consider new gun safety bills

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:30 AM PST

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —State House Democratic leaders on Wednesday introduced new gun safety legislation.

Democrats consider the gun control package of bills part of their legislative priorities.

One bill creates a gun-free zone on college campuses. Another measure would require courts to order people convicted of domestic-related crimes to surrender all firearms. A third bill would ban those on the U.S. terrorist watch list from purchasing guns.

"(It's) dealing with what I believe is common-sense legislation that's going to protect Maryland families and children," said House Speaker Michael Busch, D-Anne Arundel County.

"Guns don't belong in elementary school zones. They don't belong in a high school zone. We want our colleges and universities to be gun-free zones as well," Senate President Mike Miller said.

GOP Establishment Proven Wrong Again: Trump Wins New Hampshire

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:23 AM PST

Donald J. Trump, the man that the establishment said 'could never' and 'won't ever' win, has just gotten a hefty victory in New Hampshire. He took home a jaw dropping 35% and beat out almost every demographic across the board, by almost double digits. This is amazing:

Throughout the Republican presidential primary, and we still have a very long way to go, the Republican Establishment has revealed itself to be the nastiest, meanest, smallest group of smugs I have ever come across. I honestly didn't think people like this actually existed outside of the fictional Omega Theta Pi frat boys in "Animal House." But exist they do, and these detestable snobs despise their fellow Republicans much more than the likes of a Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

The venomous attacks the GOP Establishment have waged against Trump supporters have been way beyond anything Democrats have ever faced from this same group. Which is why they have lost the popular vote in 5 of the last 6 presidential elections and get rolled like punks by Obama, even after winning majorities in Congress.

Maryland Legislator to Introduce Groundbreaking Harm Reduction Drug Policy Bills to Reduce: Addiction, Deadly Overdose, Spread of Infectious Disease, and Incarceration Rates for Drug-Related Offenses

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:15 AM PST

Proposed Bills Would Provide Treatment-at-Need in ER's and Hospitals, Decriminalize Small Amounts of All Drugs, Set Up Safe Consumption Programs, and More

As deaths from drug overdoses increase nationwide, Maryland Delegate Dan Morhaim, M.D. - also a practicing physician who has been treating patients in emergency and internal medicine for more than 30 years - will introduce four bills to transform drug policy in the state. This groundbreaking legislative package aims to reduce the harms associated with substance abuse disorders, including rates of addiction, deadly overdose, the spread of infectious disease, crime, costs to the general public, and incarceration rates. (See detailed descriptions of all 4 bills below.)

More Americans now die annually from overdose than gunshot wounds or car crashes. Nearly 47,000 Americans died from a drug overdose in 2014.In Maryland, the Governor's office has defined the problem as an "epidemic…destroying lives". There has been a 60% rise in fatal drug and alcohol-related overdoses, and heroin deaths have increased by 186%, from 2010 to 2015 in the state.

AN EXASPERATED JOHN KERRY THROWS IN TOWEL ON SYRIA: “WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO, GO TO WAR WITH THE RUSSIANS?!”

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:07 AM PST

Can you spot what's wrong with that quote, from a Reuters piece out today?

"Russian and Syrian forces intensified their campaign on rebel-held areas around Aleppo that are still home to around 350,000 people and aid workers have said the city – Syria's largest before the war – could soon fall."

Can you spot what's wrong with that quote, from a Reuters piece out today? Here's the problem: "could soon fall" implies that Aleppo is on the verge of succumbing to enemy forces. It's not. It's already in enemy hands and has been for quite some time. What Reuters should have said is this: "…could soon be liberated."

While we'll be the first to admit that Bashar al-Assad isn't exactly the most benevolent leader in the history of statecraft, you can bet most Syrians wish this war had never started and if you were to ask those stranded in Aleppo what their quality of life is like now, versus what it was like in 2009, we're fairly certain you'll discover that residents aren't particularly enamored with life under the mishmash of rebels that now control the city.

The North Korea Sanctions Enforce Act, a bill from Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., passed the House last month and is scheduled for a vote in the full Senate this week after being approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, according to a release from Royce's office.

"As North Korea works to build a nuclear arsenal capable of hitting the United States it is clear the Obama administration's policy of 'strategic patience' has failed," Royce said in a statement. "This latest aggression underscores the importance of enacting my legislation to strengthen targeted sanctions against this brutal regime."

Liberal Columnist: Fox News on 'Suicide Watch' After Rubio Loss

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 08:42 AM PST

Fox News Channel is on "suicide watch" following the poor showing by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio at Saturday's Republican debate, says Jason Easley on the liberal news site PoliticusUSA.

Easley contends in the column that the "depression and gloom over the Fox News anchors could not be contained."

Brit Hume, he says, "sounded like he might cry," while panelist A.B. Stoddard of The Hill "sounded glum" and The Weekly Standard's Steve Hayes "was almost wailing."

David Gregory, the former "Meet the Press" moderator, "accused Rubio of trying to look like a general election candidate."

"There can be no doubt who Fox News is supporting in the Republican primary," Easley said. "Fox will do anything to get rid of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. The fact that the on-air talent on Fox sounded massively depressed after Rubio fell apart made it clear that Fox is far from neutral in this election."

AMERICAN PICKERS EPISODE TO FEATURE SOMERSET COUNTY

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST

Maryland's Eastern Shore is about to be featured in a very big way.

Last summer, the hosts of History Channel's hit show American Pickers rolled through town looking for unique, antique and collectible items. What they found will air in an episode Wednesday February 17th at 9pm.

Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz visited the site of the former Eastern Shore Americana Museum located near Crisfield in Somerset County. The late Lawrence Burgess founded the museum in 1976 and after his passing the family donated its contents to Somerset County.

The Pickers were reportedly impressed with the size of the collection and spent a large part of the day touring the site. The collection contains pieces Burgess acquired over the years from yard and estate sales that reflect what life was like in rural Maryland over the last century.

"We're excited that the Somerset County will be showcased on The History Channel tomorrow night," said Jack Gerbes, Director of the Maryland Film Office. "American Pickers has highlighted many unique Maryland stories this season, and we are sure that Somerset County is ready for their close-up!"

American Pickers has aired on History Channel for 14 seasons and is consistently one of the network's highest rated shows. Tune in on Wednesdays at 9:00pm.

Episodes are also available on the History Channel's website the day after airing.

AFGE: Time to play catch-up with 5.3 percent pay raise

A 5.3 percent raise.

That's number the American Federation for Government Employees is energetically pushing for civilian and military personnel in fiscal 2017 — well over the the 1.6 percent pay raise President Barack Obama will request in his budget proposal.

AFGE acknowledged it's setting the bar high this year after six consecutive years of pay freezes orsmall bumps in pay.

"We may or may not get a 5.3 [percent raise]," AFGE National President J. David Cox told reporters at the union's Feb. 8 legislative and grassroots mobilization conference in Washington. "But we are clearly putting on the record that we are owed the 5.3."

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST

Program Open Space Acquisition to Benefit Maryland's Natural Resource-Based Economies

In one of the largest acquisitions of its kind, the Board of Public Works today approved funding to secure 3,486 acres of prime forest land on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore for economic, environmental and recreational purposes. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will manage the property as part of its Chesapeake Forest Lands, helping to preserve the state's sustainable forest products industry.

"This acquisition will help the state solidify its significant progress toward meeting our Chesapeake Bay Agreement goals by safeguarding important natural resources, including land and water within the watershed," Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. "Even more, Maryland's natural resource-based economies and industries, like paper and timber will see benefits, as the new tracts will provide for a sustainable timber harvest and increased hunting and recreation opportunities."

Purchased at a discount for $6.53 million with funding from Program Open Space, the property is comprised of forested tracts spanning three counties: 623 acres in Somerset, 972 in Wicomico and 1,890 in Worcester. This acquisition was done in cooperation with The Conservation Fund, and will help Maryland meet conservation goals while providing for public recreation opportunities and support for natural resource-based economies. With this acquisition, the Chesapeake Forest Lands will increase to 71,208 acres.

This site will be managed by the Maryland Forest Service in accordance with the state's duel forest certification through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council.

"Sustainable management means that we will incorporate all components that make up a forest, including living resources, ecological processes and economical uses, so that they remain healthy and productive into the future," Forest Service Acting Director Don VanHassent said. "This particular site will work to filter runoff in the nearby Wicomico and Pocomoke rivers, and, after uses are decided through a public involvement process, could very well serve as a destination for hunters and anglers."

Created by the state in 2000, the Chesapeake Forest Lands program on the Eastern Shore now serves as a national model for public/private partnership, sustainable forestry management and ecosystem conservation on public lands. This purchase marks the second largest in Chesapeake Forest Lands history, following behind a 4,900-acre acquisition in 2009.

Seasoned Firewood Being Stolen

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 07:15 AM PST

People are actually getting that desperate, they're stealing fire wood. A friend contacted me yesterday telling me that his single Sister with three children had a very large portion of their fire wood had been stolen while she was at work.

My recommendation at this point is to put up a trail camera, (or two) and catch these people. Nevertheless, their interest is to find out if anyone else has experienced the same problem. This happened in Wicomico County.

‘WHITE GUILT’ VIDEO SHOWN TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:53 AM PST

Video depicts minorities falling victim to discrimination, while Whites cruise on conveyor belt

Parents in Virginia were outraged after a high school aired a controversial video purporting to teach a lesson on "white privilege."

The Glen Allen High School in Henrico is under fire for playing a video entitled "Structural Discrimination: The Unequal Opportunity Race," in which a pair of male and female minorities are pitted against two male and female white people in a literal, but metaphorical race.

The video depicts the minorities running into obstacles like "slavery," "standardized tests" and "discrimination" preventing them from finishing the race, while the white people are seen passing the baton between each other and enjoying the benefits of "connections," "privilege," and "wealth disparities."

The Media's Softness for Sanders and Socialism

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:37 AM PST

At the start of the Democratic presidential race, the media viewed the contest as a cakewalk. The compassionate and gloriously wonky Hillary Clinton faced no one who could be viewed as her equal. Game over. When Sen. Bernie Sanders made noises about running against her, nobody thought he could be the actual Democratic nominee. He was old, he was cranky, and he wasn't even a Democrat.

The conventional media wisdom had it that Sanders would be a healthy deterrent to the Clinton tendency to crawl toward the corporatist middle. On NPR, Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne saw it as positive: "Let's list two names who we don't get to talk about, Eugene Debs and Norman Thomas. This is the most serious socialist candidacy for president since they ran. But Bernie Sanders has a long list of particulars that he wants to put on the table, and I think by shifting the campaigns to economics, he will generally help Democrats."

Yes, the media elite, which eternally predicts the tea party and the Christian conservatives will destroy the Grand Old Party, could only see better days ahead for Democrats with a self-described socialist contender in the race.

Medical Complex Access Road Eyed In Ocean Pines

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST

BERLIN – A local developer believes an access road linking his medical complex to Ocean Pines is the best solution to potential traffic woes created by the Route 589 project.

On Feb. 5, developer Palmer Gillis attended a community meeting in Ocean Pines regarding his desire to build an access road from the Delmarva Health Pavilion Ocean Pines to Ocean Parkway. The road he proposed would run from the medical complex to the area between the North Gate bridge and Dawn Isle.

Currently, patrons of the medical center are provided with a right in, right out access to Route 589. Many motorists, however, are making U-turns just inside the North Gate because they don't want to travel north on Route 589.

"The right in, right out might work statistically but it doesn't work in reality," Gillis said.

Gillis told the Ocean Pines Association Board of Directors and the dozens of residents who attended Friday's meeting that creating an access road would ensure that the public safety issue didn't get any worse as he expanded the medical complex. Though it's only home to one building now, the site is expected to be home to five such buildings in the future.

When Maine Required Childless Adults to Work to Get Food Stamps, Guess What Happened

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:23 AM PST

One trillion dollars—that's how much the government spent last year on means-tested welfare aid, providing cash, food, housing, medical care, and social services to poor and low-income individuals. The food stamp program is the nation's second largest welfare program.

The number of food stamp recipients has risen dramatically, from 17.2 million in 2000 to 45.8 million in 2015. Costs have soared over the same period, from $20.7 billion in 2000 to $83.1 billion in 2014.

The most rapid growth in the food stamp caseload in recent years has been among able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs). These are work-capable adult recipients between the ages of 18 and 49 who do not have children or other dependents to support.

The Need for Work Requirements

Since 2008, the food stamp caseload of adults without dependents who are able-bodied has more than doubled nationally, swelling from nearly 2 million recipients in 2008 to around 5 million today. They gained notoriety whenFox News aired a documentary on food stamps featuring 29-year-old Jason Greenslate, a Californian who reported that he spends his time surfing and playing in his rock band, all the while receiving benefits from the food stamp program.

In response to the growth in food stamp dependence, Maine's governor, Paul LePage, recently established work requirements on recipients who are without dependents and able-bodied. In Maine, all able-bodied adults without dependents in the food stamp program are now required to take a job, participate in training, or perform community service.

Bill Clinton: The New Authority On Sexism?

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:15 AM PST

EX-PRESIDENT GOES ON THE OFFENSIVE …

Former U.S. president Bill Clinton – the guy who shoved a cigar into the vagina of a White House intern – is apparently the new authority on sexism in America.

How do we know this? Because the former commander-in-chief – who indignantly wagged his finger at the American people and insisted he "did not have sexual relations with that woman" (a.k.a. Monica Lewinsky) – is attacking 74-year-old independent socialist U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders over some inappropriate online remarks his supporters allegedly made to backers of his wife, Hillary Clinton.

Yeah … the woman who probably ought to be in jail right now.

The guy who taught us "it depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is" … is angry.

So angry, he's now indignantly shaking the papers which include the alleged inappropriate online remarks, saying the comments amount to "vicious trolling" and are "literally too profane – not to mention sexist – to repeat."

Surreal, huh?

Sheriff Clarke on Beyonce’s Halftime: Would It Be Acceptable If ‘A White Band Came Out In Hoods and White Sheets?

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:07 AM PST

Commenting on Beyonce's halftime show during Super Bowl 50, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke said he did not want to make "a huge deal about it," but since Beyonce and the other dancers were wearing "Black Panther-type uniforms," would it be acceptable if "a white band came out in hoods and white sheets in the same sort of fashion?"

Sheriff Clarke added that "the Black Panthers are a subversive hate group in America."

On Fox Business Live, Feb. 8, reporter Jo Ling Kent asked Sheriff Clarke, "Beyonce put out a new video, music video called 'Formation,' and it has been interpreted to be pro-Black Lives Matter, and potentially looking at issues inside New Orleans as well. How did you -- there are some sheriffs that reacted poorly to that, they didn't like that, they turned their backs to Beyonce during the Super Bowl halftime show. What was your thought on the matter?"

Sheriff Clarke said, "Well, I try not to overreact to these things, and I don't want to give this thing any more play than it's already getting. Look, musicians have long used their music, their trade, to make political statements in their music. We may not like it, but I don't want to make a huge deal about it."

What Clinton said in her paid speeches

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST

Recalled one attendee: 'She sounded more like a Goldman Sachs managing director.'

NEW YORK —
When Hillary Clinton spoke to Goldman Sachs executives and technology titans at a summit in Arizona in October of 2013, she spoke glowingly of the work the bank was doing raising capital and helping create jobs, according to people who saw her remarks.

Clinton, who received $225,000 for her appearance, praised the diversity of Goldman's workforce and the prominent roles played by women at the blue-chip investment bank and the tech firms present at the event. She spent no time criticizing Goldman or Wall Street more broadly for its role in the 2008 financial crisis.

"It was pretty glowing about us," one person who watched the event said. "It's so far from what she sounds like as a candidate now. It was like a rah-rah speech. She sounded more like a Goldman Sachs managing director."

At another speech to Goldman and its big asset management clients in New York in 2013, Clinton spoke about how it wasn't just the banks that caused the financial crisis and that it was worth looking at the landmark 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law to see what was working and what wasn't.

State approves $110,000 loan to assist with
construction of new shop

BALTIMORE, MD – County Line Auto Repairs, a family-owned auto repair business located in Salisbury, is constructing a new shop and office space to better meet consumer demand. The company was founded in 2005 by James and Alisha Matthews and specializes in automotive repairs and maintenance work.

As part of the project, County Line Auto Repairs will construct two new buildings totaling 2,500 square feet. The shop portion will have the capacity for eight cars with four car lifts and an additional four non-lift workspaces. In addition to the buildings, new lighting and signage will be installed.

"For small businesses like ours, finding capital to help us grow was a problem. We are thankful that Commerce has loan programs for businesses of all sizes and different industries," said Alisha Matthews. "This small business loan will enable us to expand our facility, provide service to many more customers, and hire new employees."

To assist with the expansion, the Maryland Department of Commerce approved a $110,000 loan through the Maryland Economic Adjustment Fund (MEAF). With the improvements, County Line Auto Repairs is expecting to see sales growth due to increased business capacity and visibility, resulting in a potential addition of three jobs over the next two years.

"Commerce is pleased to assist this family-owned business with its expansion, which will help attract new customers and drive sales," said Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. "Being able to work with businesses, large and small, and help them grow to the next level is one of the most important roles our Department can play."

The Maryland Economic Adjustment Fund is administered by Commerce and provides small businesses with funds to help upgrade manufacturing operations, develop commercial applications for technology, or compete in new economic markets. Manufacturers, wholesalers, service companies, and skilled trades are all eligible to apply and funds can be used for working capital, machinery and equipment, building renovations, real estate acquisitions, and site improvements. Funding assistance through MEAF is available to small businesses in all regions of the state.

Top Hillary Clinton Advisers and Fundraisers Lobbied Against Obamacare

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST

Hillary Clinton is campaigning as a guardian of President Barack Obama'sprogressive policy accomplishments. In recent weeks, she has called the Affordable Care Act "one of the greatest accomplishments of President Obama, of the Democratic Party, and of our country," and promised that she is "going to defend Dodd-Frank" and "defend President Obama for taking on Wall Street."

Meanwhile, however, Clinton's campaign has been relying on a team of strategists and fundraisers, many of whom spent much of the last seven years as consultants or lobbyists for business interests working to obstruct Obama's agenda in those two areas.

Why Does It Matter If Physicists Are Wrong About Physics?

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST

Ultimately, It Affects All Of Civilization, Scientist Says

Most people in the global physics community are fundamentally misguided by their understanding of their own branch of science, says German physicist and science writer Alexander Unzicker.

"Modern physics is so different from the science that stood for humanity's greatest achievements 100 years ago," he says. "Today's scientists have highly developed technical skills and almost unlimited resources, but they lack Albert Einstein's deep reflections on the laws of nature, his passion and his intellectual honesty."

Unzicker argues that modern physics is on the wrong track and he likens it to medieval astronomy. Most people may have trouble understanding all the reasons for skepticism about today's physics, but Unzicker says one thing should be clear – we may be stunting our progress as a species by missing the mark on physics.

"As a taxpayer, you might be interested to know whether the billions of dollars spent on real or alleged fundamental research is well invested," he says. "Yet, the problem is a more basic one. Our understanding of the laws of nature will decisively contribute to how our civilization will be able to adapt to a cosmos that is rather hostile to life."

Unzicker, author of "Einstein's Lost Key – How We Overlooked the Best Idea of the 20th Century" (alexander-unzicker.com), briefly reviews some points about today's state of physics.

• There is a telltale sign. Good physics is simple. Contemporary physics, in contrast, is complicated. This state is reflected by many so-called free parameters – unjustified numbers invented for no other purpose than to fit the data, he says. It's a physicist's business to not only describe the observations, but also to adequatelyunderstand them, he says.
• Einstein would have disliked the current standard model of cosmology.Einstein explicitly stated that a physical theory has poor chances of being true unless it's very simple. It's not that he preferred simplicity for simplicity's sake, Unzicker says. Rather, history provides evidence that correct theories are simple. All revolutions in physics are simplified – that is, they got rid of unexplained numbers.
• Einstein's example is not followed today. The man who revolutionized physics had a unique way of thinking. He endured a sincere struggle to understand the laws of nature, and his passionate search for truth is not echoed by today's researchers, Unzicker says.
• Yes, it's possible that thousands of scientists are wrong. Believing that science produces pure facts is naïve, he says. Scientists observe, and then they interpret the results. If an interpretation is dominated by a consensus of scientists, it is accepted as at least tentatively true – or not untrue. Many mistake this process as yielding solid fact, he says. It has happened many times throughout history, including overlooking continental drift. Today, he says, there is a kind of groupthink that is weakening the important field of physics.

The English edition of "Bankrupting Physics – How Today's Scientists are Gambling Away their Credibility," was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2013. Another controversial book of his is "The Higgs Fake – How Particle Physicists Fooled the Nobel Committee." After challenging holiday, Sears to speed up store closings

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST

Sears, battered like much of the retail sector this holiday, will accelerate store closures

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) --
Sears keeps pruning its business in a years-long makeover, a bid to transform itself from a 123-year-old retail store into a nimble, 21st century operator.Patience appears to be wearing thin. Shares slid early Tuesday to 13-year lows after the company said it would accelerate the closure of some of its stores following a "challenging" holiday season. The company's stock is down 20 percent this year, and they've been cut in half in the past 12 months.

Comparable-store sales in the fourth quarter dropped 6.9 percent at Sears, and 7.2 percent at Kmart, which the also company owns. That's a key indicator of a retailer's health because it excludes the volatility from stores recently opened or closed.

While the quarter that contains the critical shopping season was better compared with the previous three quarters, overall same-store sales fell 9.2 percent in 2015, with Sears stores leading the decline.

"The holiday selling season proved to be challenging, with historically warm weather and intense competition pressuring margins and driving comparable store-sales declines," the company said in a printed statement Tuesday.

“Happy Birthday” Song Settlement To Pay Out $14 Million To People Who Paid To Use Song

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST

Last year, a decades-old battle over the rights to one of the most famous songs in the world finally came to an end when a federal judge ruled that the "Happy Birthday" song is in the public domain, meaning that its publisher, Warner/Chappell, has been improperly charging hefty sums for its use. The terms of a settlement in the case show that Warner will now fork over up to $14 million to people who should not have had to pay to use the song.

Did Net Neutrality Kill Broadband Investment Like Comcast, AT&T, Verizon Said It Would?

Posted: 10 Feb 2016 11:00 PM PST

Last year, when the FCC was preparing to vote on the new Open Internet Order (aka "net neutrality") and its reclassification of broadband Internet as a vital utility, virtually the entire telecom and cable industry claimed this change would ruin investment and slow innovation. But a look at the year-end financial figures for the biggest naysayers casts a lot of doubt on these dire predictions.

One Issue, Two Stories

From changes in market share, competition levels, innovation, to buzzworthy marketing, brand awareness, and public image, there are many ways to measure the success of a business. To stockholders, investors, C-suite executives, and board presidents, though, there's one that matters more than all the others: money.

Those good old American dollars have, in one way or another, been at the center of most of the rhetoric about net neutrality… but they aren't always saying the same thing. In order to give themselves the best possible positioning, telecoms and cable companies tell two competing stories about their money.

One is the story they tell regulators. In both filing with the FCC and in astroturfing campaigns aimed at realigning public perception, the most common story told by the telecom/cable industry was this: reclassifying broadband as a more heavily regulated Title II utility will hurt investment, hurt innovation, and generally spoil all the fun everyone is having.

Cam Newton: #KeepPouting

"MVP" EXPOSED ON AND OFF THE FIELD …

This website has never cared much for the Carolina Panthers. They are North Carolina's team, as far as we're concerned. Similarly, we've never cared much for Cam Newton – whose 2010 national championship with the Auburn Tigers was tainted by allegations of payments made to his family.

On the other hand, we've long man-crushed on Denver Broncos' quarterback Peyton Manning – whose team won Super Bowl 50 over Newton's Panthers.

Manning's NFL-record setting 200th career win wasn't his most prolific offensive game … in fact the Broncos set the Super Bowl record for fewest yards gained (194) in a winning effort. Manning completed only 13 of 23 passes for 141 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

But it was Newton's implosion – on and off the field – that defined this game.
