Village gossip - Sandell Asset Management founder said to be planning to move to the UK Posted: 17 Feb 2016 01:35 PM PST Thomas Sandell, the founder of one Europe's original "event driven" investment firms, could be about to move old Blighty. City sources told little Betaville that Sandell has indicated to friends and colleagues he is planning to move to London from New York. For readers unfamiliar with Sandell, he is well-know among London's hedgies for setting up Sandell as an "event driven" fund that also pursues "activism" in 1998. Sandell Asset Management, a Swede who worked as a trader at the now defunct Bear Stearns, hit the headlines in the UK in 2013 when his firm took a large position in London-listed FirstGroup and called for the company to spin off its US business. The company also bought a stake in British supermarket group WM Morrison in 2014 after rival activist Elliot Advisers built a shareholding. A spokesperson for Sandell Asset Management declined to comment. However, people close to the hedge fund manager said he has had an office and home in London since 2001 and has travelled back between New York and the UK ever since. These people also said Sandell is not moving full-time to London and will continue to be back and further between the two cities. The people, though, refused to confirm or deny whether Sandell's main residence will be in London, so it's all rather confusing... |
